Pretty Little Liars: Summer School Season Premiere Review: This Season, Summer is Here to Slay
Bailee Madison, Chandler Kinney, Malia Pyles, Maia Reficco, and Zaria in Pretty Little Liars : Péché Originel (2022)
Things are looking a lot less pretty and a little more dangerous for the liars in the season premiere of Pretty Little Liars: Summer School.

Picking up right where things left off, Pretty Little Liars: Summer School Season 1 Episode 1 starts with four murders within the first five minutes.

Aptly titled "Loose Ends," that's exactly what's taken care of. If the trend continues like a Scream movie, audiences may see each new season commence with a kill scene.

Sheriff Beasley, Chip, Madame Giry, Steve, and the drug dealer to Noa's mom all met a grizzly end right at the start, wiping the slate clean for a new killer to cut some fresh flesh.

On top of everything the girls went through, now they have to spend their summer attending school or otherwise face repeating the 10th grade. A fate worse than death.

The girls also seem to each have...

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School Episodes 1 & 2 Recap: 10 Biggest Reveals
Image
Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers from Pretty Little Liars: Summer School episode 1 and episode 2.

Archie Waters was sentenced to death in Pretty Little Liars: Summer School episode 1. Aria and Ezra didn't adopt Imogen's daughter because the teenager got weird vibes from Ezra (but Imogen still gave her daughter to a different couple). "Bloody Rose" began her reign of terror and killed three people in the first two episodes of Pretty Little Liars: Summer School.

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School features the return of the Little Liars Imogen, Tabby, Faran, Mouse, and Noa, and the first two episodes were full of shocking twists and frights as the girls faced a new villain. As teased in the finale of Original Sin, "A," aka Arthur Waters, broke out of jail and went on a killing spree. Thankfully, his reign of terror was brief, as Imogen and Tabby worked together to figure out where he was,...

Liam Neeson’s Naked Gun Reboot: Danny Huston joins the cast and everything we know!
Image
After years of rumors and speculation, Liam Neeson’s Naked Gun reboot looks like it is finally heading into production. Set to be directed by The Lonely Island’s Akiva Schaffer, and written by Dan Gregor and Doug Man, fans expect a lot from this reboot. While many have tried (and failed) to update the franchise, and it’s hard to imagine anyone stepping into Leslie Nielsen’s iconic shoes at Lt. Frank Drebin, it’s pretty interesting that the team pairing on this is the same one that teamed on Disney’s much better than expected reboot of Chip n’ Dale’s Rescue Rangers. All involved are really funny, so if anyone could make this work, it’s them. With a release date tentatively set for July 18th, 2025, here’s everything we know about the Naked Gun reboot.

Liam Neeson will be the star.

While some may wonder why Liam Neeson,...

Tony Talk: What will win Best Musical?
Image
Welcome to Tony Talk, a weekly column in which Gold Derby contributing theater editors David Buchanan and Sam Eckmann discuss the Tony Awards race. In the hours after the announcement of the nominees for the 77th annual awards, we reflect on the omissions that stung the most, the long-shot picks we were most proud of predicting and discuss the early state of the Best Musical race.

Sam Eckmann: David, I have spent the morning pouring over the 2024 Tony nominations and switching between delight and disbelief when I look at the surprises and omissions in this lineup. It’s safe to say that this was by far the most packed and competitive season we have covered together, so while I didn’t get a perfect score with my predictions, I was more than happy with my performance. While there is much to cheer in these nominations, I can’t help but feel sad for many people.

All 9 Lands At Disneyland, Ranked
Image
Fantasyland offers the most rides and is ideally located in Disneyland. Mickey's Toontown has mediocre rides and limited shopping and dining options. New Orleans Square has the best dining options and underrated classic rides.

Disneyland in Anaheim is divided into nine distinct "lands," and some of these certainly offer better experiences than others. The oldest sections of the park have the advantage of more rides, but this is not the only part of the Disneyland experience. The best parts of Disneyland comprise a combination of rides with varied and ideally located shops and restaurants, as well as other attractions.

What any visitor's favorite place is in Disneyland is also likely influenced by their personal favorite Disney movies, as they will likely want to buy the relevant memorabilia. However, dedicated tourists will want to visit all the themed lands and will utilize the Disney app and Disneyland's free Wi-Fi to keep track of wait times.

Rumor: Disney Cruise Ship Employees Must Keep Costumes On Even If Ship Has Emergency
Image
A new rumor has people buzzing online. According to a British gossip site called Popb!tch Disney Cruise Line employees who are in costume must remain in full costume even if the ship has an emergency. If true, this sounds a bit unsafe for the employees in the costumes. However, the characters in costume could reduce some of the chaos during an evacuation event, but it sounds dangerous for those in costume.

“As one of the most tightly controlled brands on the planet, Disney has some very strict protocols aboard their cruises – especially regarding emergency evacuations.

For instance, if a Disney cruise is to be abandoned, any employee who is in costume at the time of the alarm sounding must stay in costume. They are not permitted to remove their heads and ruin the illusion for guests, so therefore have to navigate the deck dressed as a giant Mickey, Minnie,...

Image
If you haven't yet picked up Midstate #1, the psychological thriller from Lee Loughridge and Mack Chater is a must-read comic book series, following a disgraced clairvoyant and a rookie cop on the hunt to solve missing persons cases. I recently had an opportunity to catch up with Lee Loughridge, who talked about the origins of the comic book series, working with Mack Chater, and what's next. Can you talk about the journey that led to Midstate being released as a Comixology Original?

Although director Matthew Vaughn has plans for sequels, he stated that he wanted to wait and see how the first film fared. Unfortunately for Vaughn, it wouldn’t become a success at the box office, earning just $92 million worldwide on a budget of $200 million. After its low performance, the star-studded action comedy will hope to find a second life as it premieres on AppleTV+ on Friday, April 12.

Well, if you came to this story, you’ve asked us. Our answer: Yes, Netflix has won first place, but the other podiums are still in play.

Historically, the way to evaluate streamers was by subscriber count. Though the industry’s grow-or-die era is over, subscribers are still very important to ranking the streaming services. Revenue may have taken over as the key-est of the KPIs (key performance metrics) for Netflix and others, but there is no revenue without subscribers.

We’ve recorded the subscriber counts for each of the major streaming services as of December 31, 2023. Netflix will report its Q1 results on April 18, 2024; everyone else will follow with their own updates.

Jimmy Fallon and Maya Rudolph Reminisce on Will Ferrell’s Various ‘SNL’ Behind-the-Scenes Alter Egos
Image
Maya Rudolph reunited with her former Saturday Night Live castmate Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show Tuesday night, where they reminisced over co-star Will Ferrell’s behind-the-scenes antics at Studio 8H.

Fallon asked Rudolph if she remembered a character that the Anchorman star created on set.

“Are you talking about Chip Kudrow or Ron?” interrupted Rudolph.

The host noted that the character he was thinking of was Chip Kudrow, a persona that Ferrell used for an ongoing bit, where he pretended to be Lisa Kudrow’s brother.

Rudolph explained, “Will Ferrell had a character named Chip Kudrow who would just show up at our pitch meetings.”

It’s clear that Ferrell had various alter egos on set, as Fallon asked Rudolph if Chip was the one who wore a referee shirt or overalls. This prompted Fallon to mention another one of the Barbie star’s characters, named Ron.

Rudolph recalled,...

10 Best Cartoons From the '90s That Would Be Even Better Movies
Image
As hard as it may be for some to believe, the '90s were thirty years ago. That means it's finally time for some '90s nostalgia, and what better place to start than with the TV shows? In an era of streaming originals and binge-able miniseries, it's easy to forget how much of an impact TV shows had. Series from the '90s exemplify this, as they often had fans and followings well into the 2000s thanks to syndication. It's time to capitalize on those aging fan bases with new media. A movie adaptation gets the old audience back on board and is an opportunity to capture some new fans.

Plenty of classic cartoons have gotten love at the movies recently. The most recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles flick was a smash-hit, The Addams Family is a household name again, even Chip and Dale got a movie! It's time...

‘Lisa Frankenstein’ and ‘Jennifer’s Body’: A Match Made in Hot Pink Heaven
Image
Warning: The following contains major spoilers for Jennifer’s Body and Lisa Frankenstein.

Few female killers in the wide world of horror have been able to match the impact of Jennifer Check. Played by the incomparable Megan Fox, Diablo Cody’s teenage seductress rises from the ashes of a hideous crime and returns to wreak bloody vengeance on the teenage boys in her small town. Jennifer’s Body was initially dismissed as a vapid vehicle for a gorgeous star – an unfortunate parallel to the film’s own message – but Karyn Kusama’s teen horror comedy has finally found a devoted audience that appreciates its biting satire and unflinching look at the hell of teenage girlhood. Fifteen years later, Cody returns to the genre with a new heroine searching for power in a world built to dismiss her. Directed by Zelda Williams, Lisa Frankenstein follows a teenage girl desperate for acceptance who...

"A Design Disney Deemed Acceptable": Disney Was So Outraged by 1 MCU Hero, It Redesigned Them on Marvel's Behalf
Image
Disney took legal action against Marvel over the character Howard the Duck, demanding a redesign. Howard the Duck faced controversy due to his similarities to Donald Duck, but his adventures were more mature and surreal. Despite legal battles and ownership changes, Howard the Duck remained unchanged, proving the original design was the best.

Disney was so outraged by one MCU hero, it redesigned the character on Marvel’s behalf. In 1973, Howard the Duck entered the Marvel Universe. At the time, there was no other character like him–a talking, cynical, anthropomorphic duck who wanted nothing more than to be left alone. Not everyone was amused by Howard, including Disney, who took Marvel to court over the character.

Jim Shooter, a former Editor-in-Chief at Marvel, recounted the incident in a blog post. As part of the suit, Disney demanded that Marvel redesign Howard. This task was assigned to John Romita Sr. However,...

‘Jennifer’s Body’ Is Girly Pop Horror Perfection [The Lady Killers]
Image
Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, The Lady Killers revisit Diablo Cody’s 2009 slice of horror, Jennifer’s Body.

“Hell is a teenage girl.”

By now it’s safe to say that the world was not ready for Jennifer’s Body when it first released in 2009. Call it bad marketing, Juno fatigue, or audience aversion to a female-led horror comedy, this progressive film not only bombed at the box office, it sent director Karyn Kusama to what she calls “movie jail” for the better part of the next decade. But nearly fifteen years later, this beloved film about female empowerment seems to have finally found its audience. Not only is it a prime example of Boys In Danger horror, but Kusama and writer Diablo Cody take...

My Boyfriend’s Back: Horror’s Best and Worst Boyfriends [1989 Week]
Image
Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, Jenn Adams weighs in on the dreamiest and scariest boyfriends the genre has to offer.

We’ve all dated our fair share of bad boys. They win us over with their dreamy aloofness, then just when we’ve let our guard down, they turn out to be monsters in disguise. Horror has a long history of these roguish young lovers, some so bad they commit cold-blooded murder. But they’re not all monsters.

Every once in a while, a cinematic boyfriend manages to be attractive, kind, and non-murderous, all while supporting his girlfriend as she runs away from the film’s true villain. Rospo Pallenberg presents us with two appealing boyfriends in the 1989 slasher Cutting Class. Brian (Donovan Leitch Jr....

‘Argylle’ Composer Lorne Balfe Had to Keep the Existence of the Beatles’ ‘Now and Then’ a Secret for a Year and a Half: ‘It’s the Holy Grail’
Image
Composer Lorne Balfe has spent his career working on blockbusters including “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning” but even so, Matthew Vaughn’s spy thriller “Argylle,” which features an all-star cast including Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell and Henry Cavill, was one for the books. For a start, the soundtrack incorporates the Beatles’ last-ever record, “Now and Then,” the existence of which Balfe had to keep top secret for over a year until it was finally released last November.

The movie also involved Balfe making an album of cat sounds, provided by Vaughn’s moggy (and Howard’s co-star) Chip. “There were recordings of him while they were filming so we were able to chop it up and make it a percussion library,” says Balfe, a self-confessed dog person. “I’m going to post it on Twitter as a freebie so composers can use it and Chip...
