Mayuran Tiruchelvam (they/them) is a screenwriter and producer for film and television. They are a Sundance Institute Creative Producing Fellow and Film Independent Fellow whose filmmaking is fueled by a vision for a more compassionate and openhearted world. As an educator, Mayuran is the Marcus Endowed Chair in Social Justice Filmmaking at San Francisco State University.
Mayuran wrote and co-produced the noir-thriller The Girl is in Trouble executive produced by Spike Lee and directed by Julius Onah, released by eOne in 2015. They produced the critically acclaimed documentaries To Be Takei - a portrait of actor and activist George Takei (Star Trek), which premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and was released theatrically by Starz Digital and The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin (Audience Award, 2017 SXSW). Their fiction features include Across the Sea (winner, Audience Award, 2015 Slamdance Film Festival) a Turkish-U.S. romantic drama; sibling comedy The Mend (SXSW 2014) and coming-of-age thriller My First Kiss and the People Involved (2016 LA Film Festival).
Mayuran works as a freelance story and script consultant, pre-production consultant, and line producer for independent films.
