Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 12 “Disconnected.”] It seems like Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Chimney (Kenneth Choi) can never catch a break on 9-1-1. Their latest trauma: She was kidnapped by a serial killer (Abigail Spencer), who slashed her throat, but still managed to save Chimney. Now, Maddie’s recovering, and in this episode, she struggles with losing her voice in the middle of her work as a 9-1-1 dispatcher. Here’s How Rachel Boyd Feels About Sophia’s Pregnancy on Days of Our Lives
Image
There was disappointment everywhere when Ej’s misbehavior was publicized, causing Amy Choi to put the kybosh on Johnny and Chanel adopting her grandson on Days of Our Lives. This has caused Tate and Sophia to try and find another couple to adopt their unborn child. Madelyn Kientz originally played Sophia. The part was recast with Rachel Boyd in February, with the pregnancy storyline well underway when she jumped aboard. Boyd recently talked about how Sophia has been handling things.

Mama in the Making

In an interview with Soap Opera Digest, Boyd was asked about her first thoughts about Sophia. She explained that since taking over the part, things have evolved because Sophia is further along in her pregnancy and continues to deal with “an overbearing mother who wants to take control over the choices that affect Sophia, her life, and her goals.”

With the child getting closer to being born,...

Days of Our Lives March 26: How Leo’s Hit Piece Helped Fuel the Fire of Those Gunning for Ej
Image
Leo’s hit piece on Ej Dimera caused trouble and had definite consequences for Johnny and Chanel. As a result, the Wednesday, March 26 episode of Days of Our Lives had almost everybody feeling all kinds of bad feelings for Ej

More Credible Threats

If looks and words could kill, then Ej (Dan Feuerriegel) would have died at least three times in this latest episode.

First, Johnny (Carson Boatman) and Ej had another confrontation. The father tried to make his son understand how Sami (Alison Sweeney) eventually forgave him. He had high hopes that Johnny would follow his mother’s example. Unfortunately, the father’s sins were too much for Johnny. Instead, he read his dad for filth. He noted how everything that Ej touches died.

“The destruction that you leave in your wake. The women that come in your life and leave like, like, wilted flowers, shells of themselves.”

‘Hyper Knife’ Episodes 1-2 Recap: Did Deok-hee Learn About Se-ok’s Secret?
Image
Medical dramas tend to focus on the exploits of medical personnel as lifesavers; however, Korean thriller Hyper Knife turns the noble ideal on its head as it revolves around a brilliant surgeon who has a penchant for taking lives. Well, the context, plot treatment, and storyline itself are much more well balanced to justify the inclusion of such a wild narrative choice than my one-line summation might suggest, but a killer doctor is definitely the hook of the series. Backed by visually pleasing cinematography, decent performances, and intriguing characterization, the two-episode premiere of Hyper Knife is bound to grab your attention and keep you expectant for the bigger picture.

Spoilers Ahead

What Went Wrong Between Dr. Choi And Dr. Jeong?

Throughout the two episodes of Hyper Knife, the narrative focus remains on the relationship between two brilliant neurosurgeons, senior Dr. Choi Deok-hee and the prodigy, Dr. Jeong Se-ok. The pilot...

‘Buried Hearts’ Episode 10 Recap & Ending Explained: Does Seo Dongju Meet His Biological Dad?
Image
The 10th episode of the Disney K-drama is titled “I’d Like To Meet You Just Once.” Now, this sounds like quite the romantic title, but after having seen the episode, I can tell you that it’s about Dongju and the man he thought was his biological father. Buried Hearts episode 10 is a little bit of a drag compared to the rest of the show because it seems we can’t have things fall into place so early on. This means the back-and-forth between Yeom and Dongju will continue for a little bit longer despite everything that went down in episode 9. Having said that, in this episode we still don’t learn exactly what the Dandelion Team is. But it seems a lot of what Dongju knows about his life has all been a lie. With that said, let’s dive straight into the episode.

Ej Doesn’t Cross the Line…This Time on March 13 Days of Our Lives
Image
In the Thursday, March 13 episode of Days of Our Lives, it seemed like Johnny’s concerns, threats, and accusations may have penetrated Ej’s once impenetrable walls. Instead, Ej showed vulnerability and made a smart move. Unfortunately, these actions are too late. Somebody will get their payback sooner rather than later.

Ej’s Delusional Ways

Ej (Dan Feuerriegel) really thought that injecting Rachel Blake (Ros Gentle) with the Crs-17 would take care of everybody’s problems. At first, he didn’t even care about the effects or the consequences. It didn’t matter to him that the Woman in White was already a little bit loony. He wanted to do even worse to her. Sure, he realized he would lose Kristen’s (Stacy Haiduk) loyalty, but self-preservation initially won out.

Then he talked to Johnny (Carson Boatman), who told his dad that he was the one responsible for the disastrous lunch with Mrs.

Murdoch Mysteries Is Still Going Strong in Its 18th Season
Image
The following contains spoilers for the first ten episodes of Murdoch Mysteries Season 18, which is now streaming on AcornTV.

While many TV series are filmed in Canada, few shows are true Canadian icons in the same way that Murdoch Mysteriesis. Murdoch Mysteries has been on since 2008 and has maintained its dominance in the Canadian police procedural space. This is largely thanks to the fun it injects into its stories and characters and the ever-evolving cast of characters attracted to the series. Season 18 feels much the same as the show's early seasons, which is both a help and a hindrance. In the same way that Law & Order has been a mainstay for procedurals in New York, Murdoch Mysterieshas that same impact in Canada.

What helps to define Season 18 is the new energy brought in by renowned Canadian actor Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, best known for his work on Kim's Convenience and his...

Korean Cinema Risen from the Colonial Ashes
Image
Evergreen Tree.Produced during South Korean cinema’s so-called Golden Age, Shin Sang-ok’s classic film Evergreen Tree is about an idealistic young teacher, Chae (Choi Eun-hee), who teaches Korean Hangul to provincial children in defiance of the Japanese colonial authorities. The plot, a tragic love story, expressed Koreans’ desire for national self-determination after 40 years of Japanese domination. After vocational school, Chae and another student fall in love and decide to return to their rural hometowns to teach, only to be physically and psychologically defeated by local collaborationists. The movie, a propagandistic but potent adaptation of a famous independence novel of the 1930s, shows that hatred of Japanese colonialism was, in 1961, one of the few subjects that could unite the people of the North and the South in agreement. It was admired by both the South’s nationalist dictator Park Chung-hee, who seized power in a coup d’état while...

Chicago Med star breaks silence on whether Dean Archer is leaving the show
Image
Dean Archer did not have a particularly good fall finale on Chicago Med. The veteran doctor was asked to step down as co-chief of the Emergency Department, and effectively play second fiddle to the younger (and somewhat combative) Dr. Caitlin Lenox (Sarah Ramos).

Archer is no stranger to having tension with those younger than him. It characterized a lot of his screen time with Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee), and likely played a role in Choi's departure from Gaffney Medical Center in season 8. This time seems different, though. The episode ended with Archer giving his boss a resignation letter, which suggests the end of the line is near.

International Insider: Box Office Bounce; Disney Asia Interview; ‘Suits’ Effect At Netflix UK
Image
Happy Friday, Insiders. Jesse Whittock back in a week where the box office proved beyond all doubt that it is alive and kicking. All the big film and TV news from the international sphere follows. Sign up for the newsletter here.

Bouncy Box Office

From left: ‘Moana 2,’ ‘Wicked’ and ‘Gladiator II’

‘Moana’ to ‘Glicked’: It’s been a robust few weeks at the international box office largely thanks to the customary end-of-year studio fare, which has pulled audiences out of the winter cold and back into those uncomfortable multiplex seats. Defying gravity, Universal’s Wicked debuted at $164.2M, the biggest opening weekend for a Broadway adaption. The split on the Jon M. Chu-directed flick was $114M domestic and $50.2M from the international box office. The bumper number also places Wicked as the highest-grossing opening Friday flick in Imax for a PG film. Also pulling weight on international...

Snactiv Net Worth: How Rich The Shark Tank Company Is
Image
The snacking tool company Snactiv was a Shark Tank success story at one point, and they have continued forward impressively, earning a tidy net worth in the process. The Sharks on Shark Tank have seen all manner of strange ideas come through the tank, but just because something seemed odd doesn't mean it isn't a winner. In season 13, episode 10, one of these odd products came in front of the sharks, including the hilarious Kevin Hart as a guest shark. Snactiv is a simple snacking device that delighted the sharks the moment they saw it.

Co-founders Kevin Choi and Edwin Cho came into the Shark Tank seeking $200,000 for a 10% stake in their company, Snactiv, which makes a chopstick-like product that fits on someone's middle and index fingers. With it, people can snack on foods while keeping their hands clean, a boon for computer users. With some impressive figures, sharks were immediately interested.

‘Gangnam B-Side’ Ending Explained & Finale Recap: Is Choi Dead? Will There Be A Season 2?
Image
Disney+’s Gangnam B-Side banks on Ji Chang-Wook and Bibi’s popularity but fails to use it to its fullest potential. While Bibi’s character is long dead before the season finale and can only appear in flashback sequences, Ji Chang-Wook simply appears to do some blood-soaked action sequences and then disappears for most of the episodes. As a fan of the actor, I’m disappointed, because I can’t even say I watched the show just for him anymore. Last week I said the show was evocative of the “Burning Sun” incident in South Korea, but I think the show pivoted and became a bit more “apocalypse-y.” By this, I don’t mean there’s going to be zombies and earthquakes that’ll eradicate humans off of the face of the earth at some point, I just mean that for a moment it went into a “we’re doomed...

Disney Apac Content Chief Carol Choi On Disney+’s Premium Streaming Pivot, Live Sports Rights & Korea’s Ongoing Influence
Image
After pulling back on original content production in Southeast Asia and doubling down on efforts in Korea and Japan over the past year, Disney+ is focused on creating a premium service in Asia, instead of a mass one.

That’s according to Carol Choi, Disney’s Executive Vice-President for Apac (ex-India), Original Content Strategy, who has spoken exclusively to Deadline about her plans for the streamer, which first launched in the region three years ago as part of the global Disney+ rollout. Since then, the streamer reset and Disney’s focus on profit over subs progress has changed Choi’s focus.

“As the market and the Disney+ service continue to evolve, we continue to evaluate where we should focus our efforts and for the lack of a better term, get most bang out of our buck,” she said. “If you look at our Southeast Asia product offering, we’ve pivoted.

Is Steven Weber's Archer Leaving Chicago Med Season 10?
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Chicago Med season 10, episode 8, entitled "Love Will Tear Us Apart."Chicago Med season 10, episode 8, "Love Will Tear Us Apart" suggested that perpetual curmudgeon Dean Archer might leave Gaffney Medical Center. Archer is one of actor Steven Weber's best TV characters. He has been the Ed chief since his arrival in season 6, when he took the position on an interim basis as a favor to Choi (Brian Tee), who he served with in the Navy. Archer is often sarcastic, is highly critical of other doctors, and sometimes blurs ethical lines to get patients the care they need.

Archer may have met his match with one of Chicago Med's season 10's newest cast members. He has butted heads with Caitlin Lenox (Sarah Ramos) since learning that Lenox was hired to be co-chief of the Ed. That battle came to a head in Chicago Med season 10, episode...

‘Gangnam B-Side’ Episodes 5-6 Recap & Ending Explained: Where Is Yeseo Now?
Image
Watching episodes 5 and 6 of Gangnam B-Side made me realize that this show is strikingly reminiscent of the “Burning Sun” scandal. It was bound to happen sometime, and while there have been many shows on the same subject, this one feels directly inspired because of the involvement of an idol and a scandalous video. On the other hand, I wonder if the father-daughter trust bond is the new big trend of K-dramas because we just had Doubt, where the father didn’t trust his daughter and an entire series of unfortunate events followed. Now we can say the same thing about Detective Dong-Woo. The latest two episodes follow the idol’s suicide at the hospital, which definitely looks staged. Unfortunately, there’s very little of both Ji Chang-Woo and Bibi in this episode, and by the way things have panned out; we’re not going to get much of, or maybe any of Bibi moving forward.

What happened to Dr. Sarah Reese on Chicago Med?
Oliver Platt, Steven Weber, Marlyne Barrett, S. Epatha Merkerson, and Jessy Schram in Chicago Med (2015)
The Chicago Med cast has said goodbye to many members, including Rachel Dipillo, who used to play Dr. Sarah Reese.

Dipillo was one of the original Chicago Med actresses, first serving as a medical student at Gaffney in Season 1. She then became a psychiatry resident under Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt).

Many folks from Chicago Med Season 1 have also left the show, including Torrey DeVitto as Dr. Natalie Manning, Yaya DaCosta as April Sexton, Colin Donnell as Dr. Connor Rhodes, Nick Gehlfuss as Dr. Will Halstead, and Brian Tee as Dr. Ethan Choi.

The Chicago Med writers have a way of bringing characters back, like when Dr. Choi and April Sexton returned and got married.

Dr. Manning also returned in a brief scene where she welcomed Dr. Halstead as he arrived in Seattle (after he quit the hospital).

Now Dr. Reese returns, as revealed ahead of the Chicago Med fall finale.

Film Review: Alienoid: Return to the Future (2024) by Choi Dong-hoon
Image
Two-part extravaganzas have always been huge gambles for their creative teams. Hollywood is no stranger to shooting back-to-back sequels, from “The Matrix” to “The Hobbit” to Netflix’s recent “Rebel Moon” saga, and Asian cinema has followed a similar path. John Woo split his expansive Han Dynasty battle epic “Red Cliff” in two for much of its worldwide distribution, while Bollywood’s “Gangs of Wasseypur“(with its initial 319 minute runtime) has seen many iterations, first as two films, then as eight much shorter episodes for its Netflix distribution. In all of these cases, there is a gravitas that comes with the filmmaker’s vision, bursting with ideas and flourishes that cannot be contained in the average one-off cinema experience. Yet with that comes a crucial hope for the goodwill of the audience, that they’re willing to come back, buy another ticket and sit back down to see the conclusion of the story.

‘Doubt’ K-Drama Ending Explained & Finale Recap: Does Ha-Bin Kill Seung-Hui?
Image
I suppose in the end, Doubt episode 10 feels almost redundant to me. The beginning of the show was certainly very intriguing, but as we drew closer and closer to the end, the show failed to impress with every added twist and in fact became slightly frustrating. Having said that, the final episode definitely ties up all the loose ends, so there’s at least something positive there. Plus, Doubt’s ending itself is quite positive, and I quite like the idea that it’s trying to explore, though I wish it would be more vocal about it. Last week I said I thought Ha-Bin was on the spectrum, but now I’m wondering if she’s simply anti-social or has some other sort of psychological condition that makes people dislike her. Either way, the show implies that when somebody is different, people tend to doubt them without reason, which is...

Archer's Chicago Med Season 10, Episode 7 Demotion Has 1 Important Silver Lining
Image
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Chicago Med season 10, episode 7.

There is an important silver lining to Archer's big loss in Chicago Med season 10, episode 7, "Family Matters." Dean Archer is one of actor Steven Weber's best roles and has been an important part of the Chicago Med cast since season 6. He first arrived at Gaffney Medical Center to serve as interim Ed chief when Dr. Choi (Brian Tee) was recovering from a serious illness and unable to run the department. During "Family Matters" Archer is more focused on getting Lenox (Sarah Ramos) removed as Ed Co-Chief than on patient care.

Archer is also tangentially involved in an amusing subplot in which the residents play a game to get someone to buy them drinks at Molly's that evening. That said, Archer is supposed to be excluded because he is known for not buying a round in the past, which goes along...

‘Doubt’ K-Drama Episode 9 Recap & Ending Explained: Is Seung-Hui The Killer?
Image
You know, I nearly asked the same question in today’s title as yesterday, because Doubt is really testing my patience at this point with going round and round the same murder case for this long. Just in the last two episodes, we were made to believe that Jun-Tae and his dad might’ve had something to do with Min-a’s death, but hey, I’m just glad I suspected the right person because it seems a big reveal has finally been made in Doubt episode 9. The episode gets much more intense than previous episodes because it seems the noose is finally around Ha-Bin’s neck, and Tae-Soo will not be able to save her from the investigation this time. This also means her prediction is right, and he’s going to be removed from the investigation while she gets in trouble for a murder she didn’t commit. I...

Chicago Med Season 10, Episode 6: Archers War With Lenox Emphasizes The Worst Part Of His Character
Image
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Chicago Med season 10, episode 6.Archer's declaration of war with Lenox in Chicago Med season 10, episode 6 emphasizes his worst character trait. Archer is one of actor Steven Weber's best roles throughout his storied career. He has been part of the Chicago Med cast since season 6, when he arrived to temporarily take over the Ed chief responsibilities while Choi (Brian Tee) was out of commission after needing surgery. He often butts heads with other doctors, and in season 10 he has been fighting with newcomer Caitlin Lenox (Sarah Ramos) for control of the Ed.

The tensions between Archer and Chicago Med's newest character came to a head during this episode when Lenox wanted to do risky brain surgery on a teenager with serious injuries. The board supported Lenox's decision over Archer's strenuous objections. When the patient died in surgery, Archer blamed Lenox for it while she told...

‘Doubt’ K-Drama Episode 8 Recap & Ending Explained: Who Really Killed Song Min-a?
Image
Okay, let’s be real here for one second, because I was having fun with Doubt until I wasn’t. After 8 episodes, still not being certain about anything has made the whole thing a bit too convoluted for my liking. All I’m hoping for is a decent ending that doesn’t leave us with more questions than answers. Episode 7 painted us a picture of what might’ve happened to Song Min-a, but in episode 8 we learn about some new evidence. Additionally, in the battle between father and daughter, it seems at the moment the daughter has the upper hand. I’m not sure if anyone has thought of this before, but is Min-a on the spectrum? I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to realize this, but with her slightly atypical behavior, I can imagine there are chances; this is probably why she’s considered strange by other people.

Influencer Matt Choi Banned From NYC Marathon For Having 2 Cameramen On E-Bikes Follow Him During Race Endangering Runners
Image
On Sunday, running influencer Matt Choi was banned for life from the New York City Marathon after he had two cameramen follow him on electric bikes throughout the duration of the race.

The New York City Marathon is an annual event where runners make their way across a 26-mile track that weaves throughout the five boroughs.

The non-profit that runs the marathon released a statement, “After a review and due to violations of World Athletics rules, and New York Road Runners’ Code of Conduct and Rules of Competition, Nyrr has disqualified Matt Choi from the 2024 Tcs New York City Marathon and removed him from the results.”

Choi’s time of 2:57:15 was vacated in response.

Choi did not contest the disqualification but rather used his mistake to highlight his inexcusable behavior, writing on Instagram,...

Who is leaving Chicago Med? ‘One has to go’ advertises NBC between Steven Weber and Sarah Ramos
Image
Is Dr. Archer leaving the Chicago Med cast, or is it Dr. Lenox? Many Chicago Med fans asked that question after the latest episode.

So why are folks asking about who is leaving Chicago Med? The contentious relationship between the characters sparked it, but so did a new NBC promo.

Steven Weber plays Dr. Dean Archer on Chicago Med. Weber joined the show midway through Season 6 as someone from Dr. Ethan Choi’s past.

As Choi (Brian Tee) dealt with personal struggles, Sharon Goodwin put Archer in charge of the Emergency Department (Ed).

Archer held that role for several seasons (mostly) but was shocked when Goodwin added Dr. Caitlin Lenox (Sarah Ramos) during the Season 10 premiere.

Dr. Lenox was made the co-chief of the emergency department (Ed) at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center, creating friction between how she wanted to run it and how Archer was used to doing things. Lenox proposed changes,...

Chicago Med Season 10 Episode 6 Set The Stage For An Explosive War, But Can Archer Be Any More Sanctimonious?
Image
It was only a matter of time.

On Chicago Med Season 10 Episode 6, tensions erupted between Archer and Lenox.

He wants her out, but something tells me that’s not happening any time soon.

(NBC/George Burns Jr) Chicago Med’s Archer May Have Finally Met His Match

Archer is always berating others when things go wrong.

It was annoying on Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 10 when he blamed the since-departed Dr. Marcel for Zola’s misbehavior, and his treatment of Lenox was even worse.

Archer spent the whole damn episode yelling that they should wait to do surgery, so naturally, when the patient died during the procedure, he laid into Lenox.

‘Doubt’ K-Drama Episode 5 Recap & Ending Explained: Who Killed Su-Hyeon?
Image
The more I watch the K-drama Doubt, the more confused I get about what’s happened in the past and what’s coming next. Is Ha-Bin mentally ill? Is her father mentally ill? Why can’t they trust each other? What made them think the worst of the other person? The mystery is certainly exciting, but there’s something about the show that’s off-putting. Possibly the odd relationship between parent and child. A bond that’s so important but has fallen apart in such a terrible way. Episode 5 starts off with Ha-Bin and Choi Young-Min in the mountains after Choi shares the video of Ha-Bin’s mother burying her friend Su-Hyun. The video angers Ha-Bin, and she attacks Choi. However, the older guy is much stronger physically, and she’s a poor match. But, before Choi can strangle Ha-Bin to death, a man in a helmet saves her. We...

Oliver Platt, Steven Weber, Marlyne Barrett, S. Epatha Merkerson, and Jessy Schram in Chicago Med (2015)
9 Former Chicago Med Characters Who Can Return In Season 10
Oliver Platt, Steven Weber, Marlyne Barrett, S. Epatha Merkerson, and Jessy Schram in Chicago Med (2015)
Several characters who are no longer part of Chicago Med could return during season 10. Like most shows in the One Chicago universe, Med has had several characters leave over the years. There have been several cast changes almost every season, and there are few characters left who have been with the medical drama since its first season. Significant characters have left in the past two seasons, with Will Halstead exiting at the end of season 8 and Crockett Marcel leaving after season 9.

Two new characters joined the Chicago Med season 10 cast. However, there is still room for characters who have left Chicago Med to return. While most characters would likely not return full-time, there would be opportunities for them to visit Med if the right storyline was written for them. These guest stars could help connect the new episodes to the past nine years, especially for characters who did not leave on the best terms.

Film Review: Failan (2001) by Song Hae-sung
Image
The early 2000s was a time when what is now known as the Korean New Wave exposed the western world to what the cinema of the South Korea could offer in various genres. One genre in particular that the cinema of the country got to be best known for then, and to a degree still is, is the romantic melodrama. Among the many features within it that ended up impressing both the domestic and international audience was “Failan”, starring Choi Min-sik, who had just been introduced to international audiences a couple years back in “Shiri” and a pre-international fame Hong Kong actress Cecilia Cheung.
