In “Green Bones” (2024), a prison guard is willing to go to any lengths to stop a convict from leaving the prison. He thinks that’s how he can free himself from the emotional pain and burden of his past. Yet, over time, he learns the harsh truth about the prisoner and a system that benefits from keeping him behind bars. Written by Angeli Guidaya-Atienza and Ricky Lee, the screenplay navigates his moral dilemma as he starts to question the nature of their actions. This Zig Madamba Dulay film is about moral awakening under the structure of a deeply sentimental and fairly conventional prison break drama. Starring Dennis Trillo and Ruru Madrid in the lead roles, it is now streaming on Netflix.

As I have mentioned many times before, the best aspect added to horror in recent years is the intense social commentary, which has truly elevated a genre that had become as preterit as it was flicky. Shugo Praico attempts something similar in his latest movie, “The Caretakers,” which also incorporates themes of ecology and a rather dramatic core in its narrative.
The Caretakers is available from Est Studios
City dweller Audrey arrives in the rural area where her late husband was born, accompanied by her two daughters, Ali and Agatha. Her purpose is to sell his estate and convince his relatives, Lydia and her children, that the sale would benefit everyone. However, things do not go as planned from the start. A disappointed Ali eventually learns the truth about her parents’ marriage, which fuels her resentment. At the same time, supernatural events begin to unfold, with Lydia warning Audrey about the power of Mayang,...

“Lolo and the Kid” is one of those films that we have all seen umpteen times, but still have an impact. One way to tell is that the film topped the Filipino (and Peruvian!) Netflix charts after just a few days last summer. It was in the Netflix top ten in 38 other countries. Its success in its home country is of course due to the popular stars that appear in the film, including Joel Torre as Lolo (“Grandpa”), Iza Calzado, Joem Bascon, Markki Stroem, Juan Karlos and many others, as well as the wonderful child actor Euwenn Mikaell. And last but not least, it is due to the very simple but heartwarming story that we could all write in a sleepless night – only we don’t.

The Hallyu Wave has swept over the world in the last few years, with South Korea exporting quality entertainment on every level from music to movies. But while groups like BTS and films like Parasite have become mainstream enough to receive awards on a global scale, the magic of K-dramas is still often talked about in hushed whispers. Not so at Viu, the leading on-demand streaming site for Asian content in the region, however. K-dramas are especially popular in the Philippines, where they not only number among the most popular shows in the country but have also inspired original content modeled after them.
As Head of Originals for Viu Philippines, Corinna Vistan recently created and produced a Filipino drama called K-Love that is based entirely on the phenomenon of Korean dramas inspiring fans. Currently a Viu exclusive, the series is an homage to K-dramas that stars some of the hottest...

News sure to unleash an unstoppable barrage of insufferable board-game-into-movie jokes on your Twitter feed, the Ouija movie continues to move forward in its quest to bring Satanic dalliances with evil spirits to your local cineplex. Luckily, since McG is onboard as director, we can be assured that there will also be a fair bit of explosions, likely also Satanic in nature.
There have been some shakeups in the film's creative team, however, as original writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz (Tron: Legacy) are reportedly going to be focusing on their television show Once Upon a Time. Their replacement? Evan Spiliotopolous, the writer of numerous Disney animated films.
Fingers crossed for an Iza Calzado cameo in the new flick.
When he's not teaching people how to spell his name, Spiliotopoulos keeps busy by working on mostly direct-to-dvd fare including Lion King 1 1/2, The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning and other movies watched...

Jose Javier Reyes' Working Girls is a disappointment. Just like the counterfeit bags one of Reyes' characters peddles to her internet clients, the film hardly matches the 1984 Ishmael Bernal satire with the same title that it supposedly updates. Even if independently assessed of Bernal's acclaimed urban comedy, Working Girls is still an unforgivably incoherent, annoyingly shallow, and ultimately pointless exercise. In an interview, Reyes admits that this film was made as a sort of tribute to Bernal and Amado Lacuesta, screenwriter of the 1984 comedy. Given Reyes' intentions for writing and directing this update of Bernal's classic, I can only conclude that this films' biggest achievement is that it will inevitably raise awareness of the existence of Bernal's film, and hopefully gain for it more followers.
Perhaps my displeasure for Reyes' film is a tad exaggerated. Reyes, I admit, is a very smart and able writer whose gift for gab...

Though it's been completed for nearly two years now, there hasn't been a single peep about any release plans for Yam Larana's American redux of his own film The Echo. Thankfully all that silence hasn't stopped several stills from popping up online at the film's Facebook page!
The film, starring Jesse Bradford, Amelia Warner, Iza Calzado, Louise Linton, Carlos Leon, and Kevin Durand, centers around a young ex-con who moves into an old apartment building, only to learn his neighbor is an abusive police officer who savagely beats his wife and daughter. When the ex-con tries to intervene, he becomes trapped in a curse.
Check out the stills by clicking the image below, and then dig on the special promotional trailer we've included as well. Stay tuned for news regarding the film's release. As soon as we get it, you will too!

It's been a long, long, long time since The Echo, Yam Laranas' remake of his own horror film was completed. It's been nearly two years in fact, and there's been not a whisper of who will be releasing the film. While we wait for distribution news, inside you can chew on a new batch of stills from the story revolving around a young ex-con who moves into an old apartment building, only to learn his neighbor is an abusive police officer who savagely beats his wife and daughter. When the ex-con tries to intervene, he becomes trapped in a curse. Jesse Bradford, Amelia Warner, Iza Calzado, Louise Linton, Carlos Leon and Kevin Durand all star.

Get ready for an Asian horror remake that's as unconventional as can be, riddled with things we have never seen before! In The Echo we're just getting more unsuspecting people who put their noses where they shouldn't be and end up being fodder for a lingering curse! Nope. Nothing familiar about that plot at all!
The good news is at least the director of the original The Echo, Yam Larana, is back for the American redux starring Jesse Bradford, Amelia Warner, Iza Calzado, Louise Linton, Carlos Leon and Kevin Durand.

Yam Laranas shot his original horror movie “The Echo” in 2004 and finished up an American remake of the same movie in 2008. The film stars Jesse Bradford as an ex-con who moves into a haunted apartment building and begins to hear sounds. A longer, more plot-heavy (i.e. voiceover narration) version of the trailer was posted last year (see that here). This one is a Korean version of the trailer, and is a slicker, less obvious but definitely more atmospheric cut. The bathroom stall scene creeps me the hell out, man. An ex-con moves into an old apartment building, where he encounters a domestic problem involving a police officer, his wife, and their daughter. When he tries to intervene, however, a mysterious curse entraps him. Starring Jamie Bloch, Jesse Bradford, Iza Calzado, Kevin Durand, Jayne Eastwood, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Carlos Leon, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Amelia Warner, and Louise Linton. Yam Laranas directs.
