The Kid in This Overlooked Christmas Horror Comedy Makes 'Home Alone's Kevin Look Like a Wuss

Putting an edgy spin on Christmas isn’t new, but before the likes of Krampus, Violent Night, and Dear Santa came Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale. From Finnish director Jalmari Helander, Rare Exports is a horror comedy about a young boy named Pietari (Onni Tommila) who discovers that a nearby drilling operation has unearthed what they believe to be the original Santa Claus. But this isn’t the jolly old Saint Nick with whom we’re familiar today: instead, Pietari learns that the original Santa was known as Joulupukki and is a child-stealing monster that could wreak havoc on the world if set free.

Image
Why does Santa get to have all the killer fun? On the 5th day of Creepmas, we’re saluting Santa’s greatest helper, but with a horror twist. These four movies, and one TV series, highlight how the not-so-human holiday fixture sometimes prefers to spread holiday fear to a lethal degree. There’s something magical about pint-sized supernatural creatures, even more so when they get the spotlight over Old St. Nick. Appearances are deceiving; these elves mean murder.

The 12 Days of Creepmas continues on Bloody Disgusting, this time with 5 killer elves!

Keep track of the 12 Days of Creepmas here.

Christmas Evil

Not to be confused with the innumerable Santa slashers, Christmas Evil (also known as You Better Watch Out) is tonally more in line with Taxi Driver than Silent Night, Deadly Night. Writer-director Lewis Jackson clearly had no interest in making a body count flick; instead, he explores the psyche of a mentally unstable man who happens to dress up as Santa and kill people. The low-budget grit adds to the dark atmosphere.

The 1980 film chronicles one man’s...
