Based on the best-selling book by Louis Sachar, the new TV series will focus on a teenage girl who “is sent to a detention camp where the ruthless Warden forces the campers to dig holes for a mysterious purpose.“

The original Holes novel follows “the story of Stanley Yelnats, an unlucky boy who is sent to a juvenile detention camp for a crime he did not commit. Agatha All Along and WandaVision creator Jac Schaeffer is taking on another Disney+ project.

Schaeffer will direct the pilot episode of the streamer’s upcoming gender-swapped Holes television series, Deadline has confirmed.

The adaptation of Louis Sachar’s 1998 novel was announced in January, reimagining the story with a female lead.

Written by Alina Mankin with Liz Phang as showrunner, Holes the series centers on a teenage girl who is sent to a detention camp where the ruthless Warden forces the campers to dig holes for a mysterious purpose.

Phang and Mankin executive produce with Drew Goddard and Sarah Esberg of Goddard Textiles; the movie’s producer Mike Medavoy; Walden Media, which was behind the 2003 feature; as well as rights holder Shamrock. 20th Television, where Goddard is under a first-look deal, is the studio.

Schaeffer is represented by Curate, CAA, and attorney Erik Hyman.

Variety was first to report the news of Schaeffer’s directing role.

Drew Goddard didn’t have any designs on returning to broadcast. But then ABC asked him to take a look at the French-Belgian series “Haut Potentiel Intellectuel (Hpi)” — and it immediately inspired to turn it into the Alphabet primetime procedural “High Potential.”

“The last thing I wanted to do at that time was go back to network television,” Goddard says. “Not because I have any disdain for network television. It’s just, I know what a grind and how hard network television is. And yet when I saw the show, I thought, ‘Oh, that’s pretty special. That approach feels very unique.’ Putting the single mom in the center of the police procedural felt necessary to right now, and more importantly, I just couldn’t stop thinking about it.”

Exclusive: Sam Esmail has made two key hires for his Esmail Corp. The company, run by Esmail and Chad Hamilton, has tapped Sam Shafaghi as Creative Executive in film and Natalie Domengeaux as Creative Executive in television.

Shafaghi, a graduate of the AFI Conservatory’s producing program, joined the company as an intern in 2019 when they first expanded into features. He is currently working on Esmail Corp productions such as Famous, the A24 dark comedy thriller starring Zac Efron, and the upcoming South Korea-set thriller The Hole. Shafaghi reports to Nick Krishnamurthy, the company’s Senior Vice President of Features.

Hulu has greenlighted Phony, a comedy pilot starring and executive produced by Connie Britton, from Drew Goddard’s Goddard Textiles and 20th Television.

Written, directed and executive produced by Nick Paley (Marcel The Shell With Shoes On), Phony is a comedic coming-of-age mystery about a teenager, Sonny, who wakes up in the hospital after a car accident to discover his mom — his only parent and his best friend — appears to have been replaced by an impostor.

Britton will play Sonny’s single mom Ellen and the principal of his high school.

The pilot brings Britton back to her comedy roots — she started her career with an arc on Ellen before landing a lead role opposite Michael J. Fox on Spin City.

Britton and Paley executive produce Phony alongside Charlie Alderman of Charlie’s Production Company and Drew Goddard and Sarah Esberg via Goddard Textiles. Goddard Textiles’ Andrea Massaro is a producer.

Per Variety, the series premiere experienced a 220% viewership spike after three days on multiple platforms. The first broadcast on ABC on Sept. 17 drew an average of 3.6 million viewers, according to Nielsen's Live + Same Day data. After including viewers from Hulu, Hulu on Disney+, and other digital platforms, the figure grew to 11.5 million. The rating for adults aged 18-49 also started at 0.35 but increased by 354% to 1.59.
