Image
Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation has released the first teaser for the highly anticipated Shrek 5, confirming the returns of Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz as Fiona - as well as confirming that  Zendaya (Spider-Man: No Way Home; Dune: Part Two; Challengers) has indeed joined the voice cast as Shrek and Fiona's daughter Felicia.

Plot details remain under wraps for now and there's also no word on who's going to be lending their voices to her siblings Fergus and Farkle.

Franchise veterans Walt Dohrn (Trolls; Trolls World Tour; Trolls Band Together) and Conrad Vernon (Monsters vs. Aliens; Sausage Party; The Addams Family) have been tapped to direct, with Brad Ableson (Minions: The Rise of Gru) serving as co-director, while Michael McCullers (Austin Powers in Goldmember; Baby Mama; The Boss Baby) penned the script.

Shrek 5 Teaser Trailer Brings In Zendaya, But Not As Meechee
Shrek 5 (2026)
This is not a drill! It's been a long, long time since audiences have taken a trip to Far, Far Away but "Shrek 5" is going to bring us back there next year. As evidence of that, DreamWorks has released the first, brief teaser for the long-awaited sequel -- one that introduces us to the cast. Most of them are familiar faces but there is one new, very important addition: Welcome to the family, Zendaya.

While the above teaser doesn't make it explicitly clear who the star of "Dune" and "Challengers" is playing in the film, the folks at The Hollywood Reporter have confirmed that she is voicing the daughter of Shrek and Fiona. The teaser also confirms that Mike Myers (Shrek), Cameron Diaz (Fiona), and Eddie Murphy (Donkey) are also reprising their famous roles. Diaz's inclusion is not insignificant, seeing as she walked away from Hollywood for years...

First ‘Shrek 5’ Trailer Introduces Shrek’s Daughter Zendaya
Image
The first teaser for “Shrek 5” has arrived and Shrek’s kids are all grown up — and apparently, Zendaya is indeed voicing one of them. Although, her character is horrified at the magic mirror’s latest reveal.

“Hey magic mirror! Who’s the fairest of them all?” Donkey eagerly asks, once again voiced by Eddie Murphy. The answer apparently is Shrek, as the mirror provides memed versions of the ogre in response.

You can watch the first footage in the video, below.

Among the results is a very buff Shrek, prompting his daughter Felicia (Zendaya) to pop in and gag at it, while Fiona — voiced by a returning Cameron Diaz, after making her acting comeback in Netflix’s “Back in Action” earlier this year — fawns over it.

Who’s responsible for such horrifying images, you ask?...

Zendaya to Star in ‘Shrek 5’ as Shrek’s Daughter (Exclusive)
Image
Shrek 5 has landed a star that may make other franchises green with envy.

Zendaya has joined the venerable animated film series as the daughter of Shrek (Mike Myers) and Fiona (Cameron Diaz). She also joins Eddie Murphie, the voice of Donkey.

Zendaya is one of the most in-demand stars working today, with her upcoming schedule including Dune: Messiah, the fourth Spider-Man movie and Euphoria season three. Last year, she starred in Challengers, the well-regarded tennis drama from Luca Guadagnino, as well as Dune: Part Two. Her presence in Shrek 5 gives extra vibrancy to the 25-year-old franchise and could help bring new audiences to the fold.

The feature has a Dec. 23, 2026 release date from Universal and DreamWorks Animation, and is the first in the main series since 2010’s Shrek Forever After.

Shrek veterans Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon direct, along with Minions: The Rise of Gru co-director Brad Ableson.

Universal Pictures Adjusts Animation Schedule: ‘Minions 3’ Moves Up, ‘Shrek 5’ Delayed
Steve Carell, Chris Renaud, Jemaine Clement, Miranda Cosgrove, Pierre Coffin, Elsie Fisher, and Dana Gaier in Moi, moche et méchant (2010)
Universal Pictures changed its animation schedule on Friday by moving the release dates for two of its most popular franchises. ‘Minions 3’ will come out earlier than planned, and ‘Shrek 5′ has been pushed back to the winter holidays of 2026.

The intended release date for “Minions 3” was June 30, 2027, but it will now be July 1, 2026. This move puts it during the busy Independence Day weekend. The choice came after the huge success of the Despicable Me franchise. It has made over $5 billion at the box office worldwide, making it the highest-grossing animated film series ever.

The creative people of the first two films will return to the third Minions film. You can count on Pierre Coffin to return as the movie’s director and to voice the famous yellow figures. Brian Lynch wrote the script. He is known for writing “The Secret Life of Pets.” The movie is also being worked...

Shrek 5 Release Date Delayed (& Will Just Miss Major Franchise Anniversary)
Image
While the sequel was originally on track to hit theaters in time for a franchise anniversary, Shrek 5's release date has now been delayed.

Some months after the studio confirmed that it was set for a Summer 2026 release date, The Hollywood Reporter has now brought word that Shrek 5's release date is being delayed. The Mike Myers-led animated sequel is now set for a December 23, 2026 release date, ultimately coming out five months later from its original July 1 date. Universal has now swapped in the currently titled Minions 3 into that date, bringing it up nearly a full year from its original June 30, 2027 release date.

‘Shrek 5’ Pushed to Christmas 2026, ‘Minions 3’ Moved Up to July 2026 in Universal Release Shake-Up
Image
You’ll have to wait a little longer to learn if all that glitters is gold.

Universal has announced that DreamWorks Animation’s “Shrek 5” will be moving from July 1, 2026, to Dec. 23, 2026. In its place, Universal will open Illumination’s “Minions 3,” which was previously supposed to come out a year later. That’s the kind of chaotic scheduling a minion would really embrace.

Additionally, an untitled Illumination film has moved from March 19, 2027 to June 30, 2027 (the previous “Minions 3” date).

“Shrek 5” sees Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz returning to their iconic roles. The movie will release as part of the franchise’s 25th anniversary. The new movie will be directed by the previously announced Walt Dohrn and the newly announced Conrad Vernon, both veterans of the franchise. Dohrn worked on the second and third “Shrek” films as a writer and on the fourth film as head of story.

‘Shrek 5’ Pushes Release to December 2026, ‘Minions 3’ Moves Up to Summer 2026
Image
Universal Pictures is adjusting its movie release calendar for upcoming titles from two venerable animation franchises.

The studio announced Friday that DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek 5 is now set for release on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2026, after previously having been dated for July 1, 2026. Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon are directing Shrek 5 with Brad Ableson as co-director. Gina Shay and Chris Meledandri produce the film that sees the return of voice stars Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey) and Cameron Diaz (Fiona).

In a twinned move, Minions 3 from Illumination is now set to hit theaters on July 1, 2026, moving up from its previously planned release date of June 30, 2027. Pierre Coffin, who directed the first three Despicable Me films and the first Minions spinoff movie, is helming Minions 3 from a script from Brian Lynch. Coffin voices the yellow mischief-makers that were introduced as sidekicks to former supervillain Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) in the 2010 title Despicable Me.

Universal Delays ‘Shrek 5’, Moves Up ‘Minions 3’ & More
Image
Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek 5 will now open on Wednesday, December 23, 2026, instead of July 1 next year.

At the same time, the studio said Friday it is moving up Illumination’s Minions 3 from June 30, 2027 to Shrek 5‘s previous July 2026 date. That’s because the Minions and Gru have ruled the Independence Day frame for quite some time, most recently with Despicable Me 4 minting a $230M global opening last summer.

Another shift going on at Universal: an untitled Illumination event movie will move from March 19, 2027 to Wednesday June 30, 2027.

Shrek 5 is timed to Dwa’s 25th anniversary. Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz as reported are reprising their roles as Shrek, Donkey and Fiona, respectively. Directors are Shrek franchise veterans Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon. Dohrn (Trolls franchise) worked on the second and third Shrek films as a writer and artist and as Head...

‘Shrek 5’ Pushed to December 2026, ‘Minions 3’ Moves Up to July 2026
Image
Shrek and the Minions will both be on the big screen in 2026.

Universal Pictures announced Friday that the highly-anticipated animated movies are swapping their theatrical release dates, with DreamWorks Animation’s “Shrek 5” pushing back from July 1, 2026 to Wednesday, Dec. 23, while Illumination’s “Minions 3” moves into that summer 2026 window from its planned June 30, 2027 date.

Universal has also shifted the release of an untitled Illumination event film from March 19, 2027 to the June date.

While December 2026 might seem far, far away, “Shrek 5” arrives in time for the franchise’s 25th anniversary and marks the grand return of original “Shrek” stars Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz to voice Shrek, Donkey and Fiona.

Beginning with 2001’s “Shrek” (which won the first Oscar for best animated feature), the four “Shrek” films have earned more than $2.9 billion worldwide, spawning a global live-touring show and an award-winning Broadway musical that earned eight Tony nominations and 12 Drama Desk nominations,...

The last movie Cameron Diaz appeared in was the 2014 musical comedy drama Annie. Four years later, she officially retired from acting with little explanation.

Speaking at Fortune's Most Powerful Women Summit, Diaz revealed why she stepped back from Hollywood. "For me, it was just something I had to do," she said in a video shared on X. "It felt like something I had to do to reclaim my own life. And I just really didn't care about anything else. Nobody's opinion, nobody's success, no one's offer, no one's anything could change my mind about my decision of taking care of myself and building the life that I really wanted to have."

Eddie Murphy Voices Hong Kong Phooey in Resurfaced Footage From Canceled Adaptation
Image
Beverly Hills Cop and Shrek star Eddie Murphy once voiced the beloved 70s cartoon crimefighter Hong Kong Phooey, and test footage from the ill-fated live-action adaptation of the iconic Hanna-Barbera series has now resurfaced. Murphy, who is no stranger to voicing animated characters thanks to the likes of Donkey and Mulans Mushu the dragon, was cast as the live action Hong Kong Phooey back in 2011, with the project intending to use the same technique as Sonic the Hedgehog, realizing a CGI character in the real-world.

Produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions and originally broadcast on ABC, Hong Kong Phooey took advantage of the huge popularity that martial arts, kung fu, and movies from Hong Kong saw during the 1970s in Hollywood. The live action outing would have been based on the cult classic cartoon series, which introduces audiences to a mild-mannered dog named Penrod "Penry" Pooch, who works as a janitor at the local police station.

Eddie Murphy would like to do one movie combining every role he's done. The 63-year-old actor is thrilled to be reprising his role as Donkey in the upcoming fifth movie in the DreamWorks Animation franchise, and would love to reprise any one of his roles as long as the right script came along. He told Australia's Who magazine: "Sure. But I like the idea of maybe doing a mash-up movie with all my characters and have me play them all. That would be fun. Shrek 5 Officially In The Works With Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy And Cameron Diaz Set To Return
Image
DreamWorks Animation has officially announced that Shrek 5 is in development, and is set to hit theaters on July 1, 2026.

Original voice actors Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey) and Cameron Diaz (Princess Fiona) are all set to return, but we're not sure if Antonio Banderas will be back as Puss in Boots despite the massive success of his recent solo adventure, The Last Wish.

The movie will be helmed by Walt Dohrn, who served as a writer and artist on Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third, and as head of story on Shrek Forever After, in which he also voiced Rumpelstiltskin. Shrek 5 will be produced by franchise regular Gina Shay and Illumination founder Chris Meledandri; Brad Ableson will serve as co-director.

The original Shrek was a massive success for DreamWorks Animation, grossing $487 million worldwide. The movie also became the first Oscar winner in the animated feature category. Shrek 2...

Shrek 5 Sets Summer 2026 Release With Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz And Eddie Murphy All Set To Return
Image
We have the ability to contain our excitement for Shrek news — what we lack is the capacity! It’s been 14 long years since Shrek Forever After closed the fairytale book on DreamWorks’ beloved green-eared franchise, but now — coming off the back of the astonishingly great Puss In Boots: The Last Wish — the animation studio’s long-gestating fivequel has set a release date. As reported by THR, Shrek 5 is set to hit cinemas on 1 July, 2026, coinciding with the first film’s anniversary. And better yet, the original quadrilogy’s All Star cast — Mike Myers! Cameron Diaz! Eddie Murphy! — are back back back, too.

Plot details for this one are currently under wraps (presumably in the highest room of the tallest tower), but Puss In Boots: The Last Wish *did* end with the swashbuckling Spanish kitty setting sail for Far, Far Away, so don’t be surprised if Antonio Banderas’ name...

Shrek 5 Gets July 2026 Release, with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz Returning
Image
DreamWorks has officially announced Shrek 5: the long-anticipated sequel is set for release in theaters on July 1st, 2026, with original cast members Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz all returning.

Shrek 5 will mark the first new installment of the beloved animated franchise in 16 years. The film was initially slated for release following Shrek Forever After in 2010, but those plans were scrapped by former DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg. With NBCUniveral’s purchase of DreamWorks in 2016, however, there’s been a renewed focus to bring Shrek back to the big screen — though it’s taken a bit longer than anticipated.

In 2022, DreamWorks released the Shrek spin-off film, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which included a mid-credits scene that set the stage for Shrek 5. ‘Shrek 5’ Set for 2026 with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz Returning
Image
Shrek 5 is officially a go, with Universal and DreamWorks Animation announcing that the storied franchise will return on July 1, 2026. Stars Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz will return 25 years after the original Shrek hit theaters.

The feature has long been in development and will arrive 16 years after previous entry, Shrek Forever After, which bowed in 2010 and earned $752.6 million globally.

Walt Dohrn will direct after working as a writer on the second and third films, and as head of story on the fourth film. Minions: The Rise of Gru co-director Brad Ableson will co-direct, with Shrek Forever After producer Gina Shay and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri producing.

The Shrek film franchise began life under Jeffrey Katzenberg’s tutelage with the 2001 film that was praised for its animation style and for playing with fairy-tale tropes. It centered on an ogre named Shrek (Myers), who falls for Fiona (Diaz), the princess...

We’re going back to the swamp.

DreamWorks Animation has announced that “Shrek 5” is officially in development, with a far, far away release date of July 1, 2026. Original “Shrek” stars Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz are all confirmed to return.

Antonio Banderas’ return as the feisty feline Puss in Boots is not yet confirmed. “Shrek 5” will be directed by Walt Dohrn, who served as a writer and artist on “Shrek 2” and “Shrek the Third,” and as head of story on “Shrek Forever After,” in which he also voiced Rumpelstiltskin. “Shrek 5” will be produced by franchise returner Gina Shay and Illumination founder Chris Meledandri; Brad Ableson serves as co-director.

Despicable Me 4 review: Good Enough is the enemy of Good

Despicable Me 4Image: Illumination & Universal Pictures

It’s hard not to approach reviewing Despicable Me 4 with anything other than a sense of futility. Illumination Studios seems to have cracked the code for mainstream blockbuster success, not by being any good, but by being merely “Good Enough.” Good Enough distracts even the shortest attention spans.

‘Despicable Me 4’ Review: Gru’s Family Grows in Illumination Animation That Serves Up Familiar Antics
Image
In Despicable Me 4, the latest installment of Illumination Studio’s popular franchise, Gru (a winning Steve Carell) confronts the subtle villainy of suburban life. There’s something about the charmed aesthetics of Mayflower that doesn’t sit right. Maybe it’s the near-identical cottage-style homes, all painted the same shade of eggshell white and retrofitted with pristine pools; or perhaps it’s the residents, a wealthy and entitled bunch bent on excluding the unfamiliar. Whatever the reason, the vibes are certainly off.

Directed by Chris Renaud from a screenplay by The White Lotus creator Mike White and franchise stalwart Ken Daurio, Despicable Me 4 is a reliable follow-up for this financially dependable series. A new setting, new villain and new characters, including Gru and Lucy’s newborn Gru Jr., serve up enough fun and antics that will satisfy existing fans. The plot can sometimes feel like a chaotic melange stretched too thin,...

Despicable Me 4: Why the Delay in Release Date?
Image
Despicable Me is the highest-grossing animated film franchise and the 15th highest-grossing film ever. Bearing this in mind, it's kind of hard to believe that the last movie starring Gru, the supervillain who managed to win audience's hearts, hit the silver screen over five years ago, in June 2017. Nevertheless, and in spite of a lack of Despicable Me movies, the franchise kept on rolling, releasing Minions: The Rise of Gru, a prequel that chronicles the origins of Gru and his connection with the Minions, on July 1, 2022. That movie featured a young 11-year-old Gru, a devoted fan of the supervillain group Vicious 6, who suddenly gets invited to audition after the group's leader, Wild Knuckles, is kicked out and presumed dead. Even though the interview goes badly, as Gru is ridiculed for being just a kid, he manages to steal their most treasured possession: the Zodiac Stone, which is connected to the Chinese zodiac,...

The origins story from director Kyle Balda and co-directors Brad Ableson and Jonathan del Val, saw its first day in China land above The Croods: A New Age’s Rmb 19.7M from November 27, 2020 as well as other studio toons released in the intervening time.

‘Minions: The Rise Of Gru’ Secures China Release Date
Image
China has set an August 19 release date for Universal/Illumination’s Minions: The Rise Of Gru. This will be the first major tentpole from Hollywood to hit the market since Universal’s own Jurassic World Dominion which has grossed 157.4M there through Sunday and during an extended nine-week run; it is the biggest studio import of 2022.

The Universal Pictures Weibo account today posted the date for Rise Of Gru writing in part, “Long time no see, troublemakers! Get on the scooter, we’re back!” The Maoyan ticketing platform and the Douban reviews site are also carrying the date. (Check out the full-size China poster below.)

The market’s box office was severely impacted earlier this year amid Covid spikes that forced lockdowns and restrictions, with Shanghai and Beijing hit hard. Dominion‘s dinosaurs helped shake things up, and lately, local Chinese movies have seen a resurgence, including holdover sci-fi comedy...

‘Minions: The Rise Of Gru’ Boogies To 202M WW As ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Flies By 1.1B & ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ Rumbles Past 800M – International Box Office
Image
Update, writethru: Coming in slightly above the estimates we reported on Saturday, Universal/Illumination’s Minions: The Rise Of Gru has boogied to an 87.2M weekend at the international box office. That lifts the offshore cume to 93.7M for 202.2M worldwide to date.

The Rise Of Gru, the latest entry in the globe’s biggest animated franchise, had previously bowed in Australia last weekend and this frame added another 60 markets. In the fresh hubs, the debut was 81.5M.

In like-for-likes at today’s exchange rates, the new openers are 23 below Minions and 13 below Despicable Me 3. Including Australia, results in Week 2 are tracking 13 below Minions and just 3 below DM3. France, Japan, Korea and Italy are still to unleash the little fellows.

Gru and the crew set some new milestones internationally with four markets scoring the biggest animation opening weekend of all time (Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Venezuela); and 52 markets setting the...

‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ Director on How Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee and the 1970s Influenced the Film
Image
“Minions: The Rise of Gru” may be filled with familiar, uh, faces of the lovable yellow creatures, but it transports them back to the 1970s, when Gru (still voiced by Steve Carell) was a supervillian in training and the Minions were looking to fit into his burgeoning world.

The latest installment of the popular franchise from Universal and Illumination was directed by Kyle Balda, himself a veteran of the world of the Minions and a child of the ’70s. The animation team had to distill tons of research of the colors, the music, the architecture, clothes and hairstyles of the mid-1970s for the film, which follows elementary school student Gru as he applies to join the Vicious 6, a team of supervillians, but of course, events, with the help of the Minions, go awry.

The feature has fun referencing kung fu movies of the ’70s, something Balda loves. Much of...

Image
Saturday Update: Universal/Illumination’s Minions: The Rise Of Gru is lighting up at the global and international box office, set to be the current frame’s No. 1 film domestically, overseas and worldwide through Sunday. Gru and the crew are now out in 61 offshore markets, having released early in Australia and adding such majors as Mexico, Brazil, Germany, the UK and Spain through yesterday.

The estimated worldwide cume through Sunday is eyed at 202.16M. Of that, overseas is expected to rep 92.7M. In this weekend’s new markets only, the launch is 81M. Coming into the session, projections were at 70M+, so this is a great bump. The full frame estimates on new markets (excluding previews) are tracking about 20 below 2015’s Minions and 13 behind 2017’s Despicable Me 3 at today’s exchange rates. Meanwhile, the TikTok “Minions In Suits” challenge which we told you about yesterday (see below), continues to go viral.

UK-Ireland box office preview: ‘Minions: The Rise Of Gru’ aims for the top
Image
Other new releases include ‘Nitram’ and ‘The Princess’.

With the school summer holidays already underway for some and in sight for most children, Universal is going big with the release of Minions: The Rise Of Gru.

The Minions sequel will play in 637 sites, making it Universal’s widest ever animation release in the UK-Ireland. The first Minions film debuted at the top of the UK-Ireland box office back in 2015, taking £11.6m from 573 sites, which broke the then record for the biggest ever three-day opening for an animation.

The Illumination title is the fifth film in the Despicable Me franchise. Despicable Me 3...

‘Minions: The Rise Of Gru’ Looks To Lift 150M WW As Summer Box Office Rally Continues
Image
After a two year delay due to the pandemic, Illumination/Universal’s Minions: The Rise of Gru, the fifth movie in the Despicable Me/Minions universe, arrives looking to lead the Independence Day domestic box office with 70M-80M over 4-days, and another 70M+ abroad for a potential 150M global launch. There are no other major studio wide entries over July 4th weekend.

Through four movies comprised of three Despicable Mes and a Minions spinoff, the Illumination franchise has chalked up 3.7 billion worldwide.

Should Minions: The Rise of Gru come in under its U.S./Canada projections, it’s strictly due to franchise fatigue. There have been few animated family movies during the pandemic, so comps are scant. Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2 with a 72.1M opening is still the ideal comparison for any major studio’s animated fare. Sonic 2 received an offshore opening ahead of U.S.
