FX’s Dying For Sex, created for TV and showrun by Elizabeth Meriwether and Kim Rosenstock, is inspired by the story of Molly Kochan. The eight-episode series follows Molly just as she receives the news about her stage IV metastatic breast cancer diagnosis. Soon after, Molly decides to leave her husband of nearly two decades to explore her insatiable sex drive and unspoken desires. Kochan originally chronicled her dating journey via a Wondery podcast of the same name alongside her best friend, Nikki Boyer (played by Jenny Slate in the show). It was eventually released publicly in 2020, a year after Kochan died at the age of 45.
Here, Rosenstock explains the enjoyment and challenges of breathing life and taboo fun into someone on the edge of death.
Deadline: How did you come across Molly’s story? Did you listen to the podcast first, or did you meet Nikki Boyer?

Actress Jenny Slate admits she’s not someone who listens to podcasts or spends hours on the internet. So, when her agents mentioned that something based on a podcast was coming up, everything came as a surprise.
That project was FX’s “Dying for Sex.” The limited series is based on the true story of Molly Kochan, a young woman who is diagnosed with stage IV cancer. Together with her best friend Nikki Boyer, the two start a podcast about her journey.
Speaking at FX’s Dying for Sex Panel, Slate says, “I had no idea the project was about to be made. I just heard briefly about it and was blown away by the material and how instantly I just felt myself pleading to be a part of it.”
Her pleas worked. Slate plays Boyer on the show alongside Michelle Williams.

Talking to Michelle Williams and Jenny Slate, it's hard to remember that they haven't always been best friends. They hug, they finish each other's sentences, they check in with each other to make sure they're on the same page. While mercifully they haven't endured what their characters on FX's Dying for Sex had, it's clear the experience of playing Molly Kochan and Nikki Boyer has bonded the two actresses closely. The limited series, which was created by Liz Meriwether and Kim Rosenstock, chronicles Molly's (Williams) journey of self-discovery after she's diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer — with her best friend, Nikki, at her side through it all.
Here, Williams and Slate share with Gold Derby the experiences of filming such a gut-wrenching series, the toughest scenes they faced — and why it's a "master class in orgasms."
Gold Derby: How are you feeling about the success of the show and the response to it?...

In Elizabeth Meriwether’s follow-up to her 2022 Elizabeth Holmes bio limited series The Dropout for Hulu, she teamed with Kim Rosenstock to adapt Nikki Boyer and the late Molly Kohan’s Dying for Sex podcast into a limited series for FX on Hulu that explores Molly’s (Michelle Williams) journey to achieve her first orgasm with another person after receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis.
In the show’s opening episode “Good Value Diet Soda,” written by Rosenstock from a story by her and Meriwether and directed by Shannon Murphy, Molly is navigating the complex emotions of a woman finding clarity during an earth-shattering moment.

“Dying for Sex” co-creators, executive producers and writers Elizabeth Meriwether and Kim Rosenstock knew that establishing the tone of the show was always going to be hard.
The limited series starring Michelle Williams and Jenny Slate is based on the true story of Molly Kochan, a young woman who is diagnosed with stage IV cancer. Together with her best friend Nikki Boyer, the two start a podcast about her journey.
Molly, played by Williams in the show, doesn’t plan on having a sexual awakening, but she does. And as she battles her illness, she explores her sexual desires and fetishes, empowering herself. Speaking during Variety‘s A Night in the Writers’ Room Limited Series panel, Meriweather said, “We decided to focus on the humanity of the characters and really not try to think about genre that much.”

When Elizabeth Meriwether devoured all six episodes of the “Dying for Sex” podcast in one sitting, she fell in love with its unfiltered honesty. Released by Wondery in early 2020, the podcast candidly chronicled Molly Kochan’s sexual awakening after being diagnosed with Stage IV metastatic breast cancer. Her best friend, Nikki Boyer, was by her side for all the highs and lows.
“I was so taken by the tone of it, how funny it was in the midst of some of the worst things that can happen to a person, and the friendship at the heart of it,” Meriwether said. The Emmy-nominated creator of “The Dropout” recruited Kim Rosenstock, whom she’d worked with on Fox’s “New Girl.” “We’ve all seen stories about people who are sick and being taken care of, but something about [Kochan] healing while dying felt like this incredible, incongruous thing,” Rosenstock said.

Jenny Slate has been busy. The multi-hyphenate star — actress, writer, stand-up comedian, former “SNL” player, prodigious voice performer, SAG winner, and so much more — has not only done a little bit everything, but continues to do so at an admirably high level. When this writer last caught up with her it was (somehow?) eight years ago, on the occasion of her “Landline” reunion with her “Obvious Child” compatriots, director and co-writer Gillian Robespierre and writer Elisabeth Holm. Even Slate couldn’t believe how much time had passed.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa. Wow. What have I been up to? My life has changed drastically since that time, and luckily I’m all the better for it,” Slate said with laugh during a recent Zoom with IndieWire.
“I’ve made a lot of my own work: two standup specials, I’ve written two books of little pieces about emotional states,” Slate said. “Those four projects have been really,...

A comedy about a woman diagnosed with metastatic cancer seems like a contradiction in terms, but that’s the high-wire act that FX’s Dying for Sex accomplishes. Cocreators Liz Meriwether and Kim Rosenstock, who’d worked together on New Girl, teamed up again to adapt the podcast cohosted by Molly Kochan and her best friend, Nikki Boyer, into a limited series starring Michelle Williams and Jenny Slate. The series, which launched in April to critical rapture (98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), currently ranks in the top of Gold Derby’s Emmy predictions for limited series and lead actress Michelle Williams, among other races.
Here, the two executive producers reveal how they pulled off the impossible — capturing Molly’s spirit, finding the chemistry between Williams and Slate, and the joke that still makes them laugh.
Gold Derby: Could you ever have imagined the response that the show was going to get?...

Six years ago, Michelle Williams won the Best Limited/Movie Actress Emmy for her role as actress-dancer Gwen Verdon in FX's Fosse/Verdon (2019). Now, Williams could become the 15th actress to win at least two Emmys in this specific category, thanks to her role on FX's Dying for Sex.
Williams plays Molly Kochan, a terminal cancer patient whose tragic, often funny, and wild sexual journey is at the heart of the story. Kochan’s podcast, cohosted with her friend Nikki Boyer, serves as the foundation for the series, which dives deeply into themes of sex, desire, friendship, and death.
The last person to win double Emmys in Best Limited/Movie Actress was Kate Winslet for Mildred Pierce (2011) and Mare of Easttown (2021). It took her 10 years to claim the bookend trophy, while Williams could accomplish the feat in just six years. Should Williams prevail, both actresses would also be undefeated in this race.

For Jenny Slate, filming the FX series “Dying for Sex” prompted the seasoned comedian and actress to open up as a performer and a person, enabling her to feel “more free” by the end of the project.

When Elizabeth Meriwether told fellow “New Girl” scribe Kim Rosenstock to listen to the podcast “Dying for Sex,” Rosenstock was hesitant.
“It was June 2020, deep in one of the darkest times of Covid, a really rough moment,” Rosenstock recalled in a conversation with IndieWire. “There was an earthquake that happened, Rbg had just died, and Liz was like, ‘Hey, do you want to listen to this podcast about a woman who dies of cancer?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, I don’t think that’s going to be good for my mental health right now.’ And she was like, ‘No, it’s also all about sex.’ I was like, ‘What? Based on a podcast of the same, FX’s “Dying for Sex” tells the heartbreaking yet empowering true story of a woman reclaiming her sex life after receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis.
Michelle Williams plays Molly Kochan, who died in 2019 from metastatic breast cancer. Kochan and her best friend Nikki Boyer, played by Jenny Slate, started a podcast in the months prior to her death to document the cancer patient’s journey of sexual exploration.
Kochan received a devastating phone call from the hospital in the middle of a couples’ therapy session with her then-husband, telling her that her cancer had spread to her bones and was incurable. At this moment Kochan left the session and decided she wanted to end her 15-year marriage.
Though Kochan did not admit that she had never had an orgasm with another person as she does on the show, she did admit that her...

In my life, I have watched Michelle Williams play a character who dies in the series finale of a television show three times, but two have been particularly memorable. That doesn't seem like a lot, but considering the gravity and weight of these deaths, it's an emotional heaviness that stays with you.
The first time was obviously when her wonderfully misunderstood but tragically underrated character Jen Lindley died in the series finale of Dawson's Creek. I won't elaborate too much on my feelings about Jen's death, but just know that she deserved much better than going out as a plot device for Joey to finally make a decision between Dawson and Pacey.
Now, I've watched Williams play a character who dies in a show's series finale again, this time in the beautiful tragicomedy Dying for Sex on FX on Hulu. Williams previously won an Emmy Award for her portrayal of...

For a TV show about a woman dying from a terminal cancer diagnosis, “Dying for Sex” is jam-packed with just as much “wild slapstick” comedy as there is grieving and introspection — a balance that first attracted creators Liz Meriwether and Kim Rosenstock to the real-life podcast of the same name.
“What really pulled me in was just how emotionally complicated it was … I felt so much, and I was laughing so much at the same time,” Meriwether told TheWrap of the “Dying for Sex” podcast, in which Molly Kochan documented her sexual exploration after being diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer alongside her best friend, Nikki Boyer. “[It’s] really rare where a story is as emotional as it is funny, and I was excited by the challenge of it: how do you find so much comedy in these dark places?”

Terminal cancer, erotic daydreams of cunnilingus and finally having an orgasm, stepping on guys’ dicks, heartbreaking notions of mortality and friendship as love all merge like sweaty, messy sex in FX’s terrific “Dying For Sex,” a limited-series much more moving and sweet than much of this sounds.
From writers/creators/showrunners Kim Rosenstock and Liz Meriwether —the latter of whom made a super exciting creative leap in 2022, moving from jovial network comedy to the more meaningful Elizabeth Holmes prestige drama, “The Dropout” for Hulu with Amanda Seyfried (still funny in moments too)—“Dying For Sex” is based on the Wondery podcast of the same name by Nikki Boyer.

Michelle Williams isn’t someone who’s easily swayed — the Emmy winner and five-time Oscar nominee is in a "happy, stable place" in her life. But when it came to FX's limited series Dying for Sex, she couldn’t help but feel an intense and mysterious connection to the story.
"She cast a spell on me," Williams tells Gold Derby, referring to Molly Kochan, a terminal cancer patient whose tragic, often funny, and wildly sexual journey is at the heart of the story. Kochan’s podcast, cohosted with her friend Nikki Boyer, serves as the foundation for the series, which dives deeply into themes of sex, desire, friendship, and death.
After Molly (Williams) receives a diagnosis of Stage IV metastatic breast cancer, she decides to leave her husband, Steve (Jay Duplass), and begins to explore the full breadth and complexity of her sexual desires for the first time in her life.

Cancer isn’t funny. Erotic kinks are often smirked at in movies and television, almost never portrayed with humor that also respects what participants get out of them.
“Dying for Sex,” then, is a f—king miracle.
To call the FX/Hulu limited series a sitcom would be to diminish the healing positivity it lavishes on both title subjects. Yet laugh-out-loud comedic it consistently is. Poignant and adorable too. Empowering if that’s what you want from it, but not insistent in that regard.
Any tears the show will bring are eminently earned. And there’s a good chance it’ll get you hot.

Somewhere between a devastating cancer diagnosis and delightfully awkward sex, Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, and Rob Delaney, have managed to find humor and heart in Dying for Sex. No other television show has confronted cancer quite like this. It's a cancer comedy. But it will also make you weep. The FX limited series is based on the podcast of the same name by Nikki Boyer, played by Slate, about her friend Molly, played by Williams, who learns her breast cancer has returned. Given an undetermined amount of time to live, Molly makes finally having good sex her one bucket list goal — and the result are some sexy, hilarious, eye-popping sex scenes.
"Thank God for Rob," Williams told Gold Derby about navigating their kinky and sometimes awkward scenes at Wednesday's New York City premiere of the series. "It's something only the two of us will share. I've never done scenes like that before,...

Shannon Murphy wants to change the conversation around death. “I’ve been obsessed with death from such a young age and in many ways it’s this great adventure that we will all go on,” says the Australian director. “If we start changing the way we talk about it and look at how we can guide people through death and mourn them without hiding it from society, it could be beautiful.”
It’s this attitude and her curiosity with the unknown that drew the acclaimed theatre, TV and film director to her latest project Dying for Sex, FX’s new limited series starring Michelle Williams and Jenny Slate.

It's been a few years since five-time Academy Award nominee and Emmy Award winner Michelle Williams has graced our screens, but she's finally back with an amazing new role in the FX on Hulu comedy-drama series Dying for Sex. Williams is one of my all-time favorite actresses, so I don't know about you, but I'm excited to watch her new show when it premieres in April 2025.
She last appeared in her Oscar-nominated role in Steven Spielberg's The Fabelmans, which couldn't be more different from this limited series. In Dying for Sex, Williams plays Molly, who has been battling metastatic breast cancer and recently ended a nearly two-decade marriage. With the help of her friend Nikki (Jenny Slate), Molly embarks on a journey to explore her sexuality.

Michelle Williams is adding to the intimacy coordinator debate. The multiple Academy Award nominee detailed her first experience working with a coordinator during limited series “Dying for Sex,” based on Nikki Boyer’s podcast about the sexual awakening of her terminally ill best friend, Molly, as portrayed by Williams.
Williams told Vanity Fair that while it was a “shock” at first to adjust to collaborating with an intimacy coordinator, the profession itself is “extremely worthwhile.”
“It’s just a shock — it’s a change. I’ve been doing this for a long time and it’s something to get used to,” Williams said. “But whether or not you feel like you need an intimacy coordinator, your scene partner — of which you have many — might really value it. They might need privacy around a sensitivity that they have. That is valid and that is the kind of care that an intimacy coordinator can offer.

Every year right about now, the Emmy race starts ramping up, with lots of shows releasing in the spring sweet spot — they’ll be fresh in your minds for Emmys campaigning and inside of the May 31 eligibility cut-off date. Of course we’ll have plenty of big returning awards-centric shows—The Last of Us, Hacks, Poker Face, The Bear, Severance and The White Lotus, to name just a few— but what are the brand new shows we have yet to see?
You’ve likely already been watching Hulu’s twisty new show Paradise, which reunites Sterling K. Brown with This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman, Max’s The Pitt is bringing back the medical drama in a big way, CBS Kathy Bates-starrer Matlock is one to watch that’s already renewed for Season 2, as is Netflix’s smash hit Nobody Wants This… these new shows already made their debut.

Based on the hit Wondery podcast, Molly’s story is funny, fearless, and deeply human.
Michelle Williams is about to make every second count. In FX’s new limited series “Dying for Sex,” Williams stars as Molly, who finds out she’s got Stage IV metastatic breast cancer and decides it’s now or never to start living life on her own terms. Step one? Leaving her husband Steve (Jay Duplass). Step two: exploring all the sexual desires she’s kept bottled up until now. With her best friend and ultimate hype-woman Nikki (Jenny Slate) by her side, Molly’s diving in — zero apologies and definitely no bucket lists. Based on the hit Wondery podcast and the true story behind it, this one’s equal parts funny, fearless, and emotional. All eight episodes drop on Hulu on Friday, April 4 - here’s everything you need to know about “Dying for Sex.
