The German TV crime-solving comedy series “Homicide Hills” debuts its third season on streaming service MHzChoice on June 27. Previously, I’ve reviewed the first two seasons of this German crime comedy series on this site, and in the previous seasons, Sophie Haas (Caroline Peters), a tough, brash cop from Cologne, was shipped off to become the police chief of a sleepy German village named Hengasch. Season 3 opens with Sophie’s wedding to Hengasch’s local vet. True to form, things go wildly awry, resulting in “marriage interruptus,” then morphing into another crime to solve in the series’ light-hearted fashion. Her charming father (Hans Peter Hallwachs) moves with his “nurse” to Poland, removing one of the reliable cast members from the equation. That’s a loss.

A country not exactly renowned for humor (Google Robin Williams on that point) gives us its equivalent of charming shows like England’s “New Tricks,” France’s “Sharif” (previously reviewed here) or Canada’s “Nurdoch Mysteries.” In this case, Sophie Haas (Caroline Peters) is a tough, brash cop in Cologne who thinks she’s up for promotion. As studios meet in Las Vegas to present footage of their upcoming slates to exhibitors, Netflix is showcasing their own slate of future feature films as it has unveiled its upcoming summer slate of original movies. Some of the films receiving new release dates include the Vampire thriller Day Shift starring Jamie Foxx, which is set to bow on August 12, the Kevin Hart-Mark Wahlberg comedy Me Time, bowing on Aug. 26 and the Dakota Johnson drama Persuasion, bowing July 15. The streamer also confirmed dates of some highly-anticipated films that had previously been announced like the Adam Sandler sports pic Hustle, which bows on June 8, the Chris Hemsworth-Miles Teller Thriller Spiderhead, which bows on June 17 and most recently the The Russo Brothers next film The Gray Man, starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, which will premiere on July 22.

Netflix has doubled its budget to €500 million ($571 million) for German-language productions between 2021 and 2023 and has revealed a raft of new projects.
On Tuesday, the Netflix German-language team presented a selection of 19 productions, including previously announced projects, at the Content Remote Show. The shows are from Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Mexico’s Mauricio Ochmann is re-teaming with director Pitipol Ybarra for the Mexican remake of the 2018 German hit “25 Km/H” from Sony Pictures Intl. Prods. (Spip).
Ochmann and Ybarra previously collaborated on family drama “Ya Veremos,” which Pantelion/Lionsgate released in the U.S. on Labor Day weekend in 2018. Drama topped the specialty releases that weekend, grossing an estimated $1.8 million over the three-day holiday.
In “25 Km/H,” an estranged brother and sister reunite at their father’s funeral and make a spur of the moment decision to fulfill their childhood dream of driving across Mexico on their old motorbikes. Netflix movies may still be question mark in terms of being allowed in competition at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival in May, but the streaming giant will be present at Cannes Series. The Cannes television festival will mark its second year next month with Netflix going up against rival Amazon in the competition section. The full lineup includes series from Israel, Norway, Spain, and Belgium.

Sony’s Deutsche Columbia Pictures Filmproduktion and Studio Babelsberg’s in-house production arm Traumfabrik Babelsberg are co-producing Friendship! director Markus Goller’s latest feature project 25 Km/H, which began shooting in Baden-Württemberg this week.
The road movie stars Lars Eidinger (The Bloom of Yesterday), Bjarne Mädel (Tatortreiniger), Sandra Hüller (Toni Erdmann), Alexandra Maria Lara (Rush) and Jella Haase (Fack Ju Göhte).
The project is the first to go into production for Goller and screenwriter Oliver Ziegenbalg’s recently formed production company Sunny Side Up, and is also in co-production with Deutsche Columbia, Pictures in a Frame, Mythos Film, Traumfabrik Babelsberg and the single-purpose company 26th Babelsberg Film.
25 Km/H is Goller and Ziegenbalg’s first collaboration since their 2010 film Friendship! which was the most successful German film of that year with more than 1.5 million admissions.

Beta Cinema has closed a string of deals on hard-hitting Berlin competition drama 24 Weeks.
Following a competitive situation in Germany, writer-director Anne Zohra Berrached’s second feature was snapped up by Neue Visionen in an all rights deal.
Deals have also closed in Benelux (September Films), Poland (Aurora Films), Greece (Feelgood Entertainment), Turkey (Filmarti), Ex-Yugoslavia (Discovery Films), Hungary (Cirko), Columbia (Cineplex), Taiwan (Swallow Wings), China (Lemon Tree Entertainment) and Korea (JinJin Pictures).

Ahead of this year’s Berlinale (Feb 11-21), Beta Cinema has taken worldwide rights for German competition entry 24 Weeks, the second feature of director-writer Anne Zohra Berrached.
The film stars Julia Jentsch, who won the Silver Bear for Best Actress in the Oscar-nominated Sophie Scholl: The Final Days, and was produced by zero one, which made Toronto title The People Vs. Fritz Bauer.
Berrached, whose first feature Two Mothers won the Dialogue in Perspective Award at Berlinale 2013 and the First Steps Award, wrote the script with Carl Gerber.
The story centres on cabaret performer Astrid (Jentsch), who six months pregnant learns that her unborn child will be severely disabled. She and her husband Marcus (Bjarne Maedel) have a choice, but little time.
