The Berlin International Film Festival’s annual co-production market has unveiled the 37 feature film projects that will form this year’s selection.
There are 22 projects taking part in the Official Selection, including new films from Boo Junfeng, whose The Apprentice premiered at Cannes in 2016, and Uberto Pasolini, whose credits as a director include Still Life and Machan, and as a producer include The Full Monty.

Films from Nsu German History X director Christian Schwochow, BeTipul star Shira Geffen, 7 Days in Havana director Santiago Mitre and The Full Monty producer Uberto Pasolini are among the titles set for this year’s Berlinale Co-Production Market.
The co-pro market, which will see 600 international producers and financiers to come together to explore new partnerships, will host 37 feature film projects. Notably, 20 female filmmaker, 49% of selected titles, are represented.

Stormy awards sees Greek Academy blast government.
Argyris Papadimitropoulos’s (Wasted Youth) drama Suntan was the big winner at the Iris Hellenic Film Academy Awards on Tuesday evening (March 21) winning six prizes out of the 11 for which it was nominated including best film and director.
The film, which played in the Rotterdam, Brussels, Edinburgh, SXSW, Odessa and Jeonju festivals, was also awarded best screenplay, best actor for Makis Padimitriou and best supporting actress for Elli Tringou.
The Faliro House, Marni and Oxymoron production is a bitter sweet drama about a middle-aged doctor on a Greek island whose life turns upside down when he gets embroiled with a group of hedonist tourists.
The film is widely tipped to be Greece’s submission in the best foreign language category at next year’s Oscars.

As one of the highest profile events on the film festival calendar, the announcement of the film selection for the Cannes Film Festival is always greatly anticipated. A broad range of cinema is always guaranteed, and this year is no exception. With Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller already known to be President of the 2016 Cannes competition Jury, we can now take a look at the feature films that will be included in the festival – which runs from May 11th to May 22nd, 2016.
Familiar names – such as Paul Verhoeven, Park Chan-Wook, Ken Loach, Sean Penn, Pedro Almodovar, Nicolas Winding Refn and Jim Jarmusch – will be among those competing for prestigious acknowledgement from the Jury, while several directorial debuts feature as entries in Un Certain Regard – from filmmakers such as Stephanie Di Giusto, Maha Haj and Michael O’Shea.

The competition line-up for our most-anticipated cinema-related event of the year has arrived. With a jury headed up by George Miller, early this morning, the 2016 Cannes Film Festival announced their slate. The competition line-up includes some of our most-anticipated films of the year, including the Dardennes‘ The Unknown Girl, Olivier Assayas‘ Personal Shopper, Andrea Arnold‘s American Honey, Jim Jarmusch‘s Paterson, Paul Verhoeven‘s Elle, Park Chan-wook‘s The Handmaiden, and many more.
Playing out of competition is the previously announced Cafe Society from Woody Allen, as well as Steven Spielberg‘s The Bfg, Jodie Foster‘s Money Monster, Shane Black‘s The Nice Guys, and Na Hong-jin‘s mystery thriller Goksung. Some notable titles in the Un Certain Regard section include the Studio Ghibli-backed Red Turtle and Hirokazu Kore-eda‘s After the Storm.

At a press conference this morning, Cannes chief Thierry Frémaux and president Pierre Lescure revealed 49 films selected for inclusion in this year’s festival, set to run May 11-22.
The annoncement was delayed by a peaceful protest at the Ugc Normandie movie theatre on the Champs-Elysees in Paris. A tweet from the festival said: “Due to an intervention of Entertaintement workers, the announcement of the Selection is slightly delayed. Stay with us!”
As previously announced, Woody Allen’s Café Society will open the festival on May 11.
Also previously announced, the competition jury will be presided over by Australian director George Miller, whose Oscar-winning Mad Max: Fury Road received its world premiere at Cannes last year.

The TorinoFilmlab has revealed the nine projects that will take part in the 2016 edition of FrameWork, the initiative’s flagship lab for first and second feature film projects.
Amongst the first and second-time filmmakers is Iranian director Massoud Bakhshi, whose first feature A Respectable Family debuted in Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes in 2012, and Israeli director Tom Shoval, whose 2013 drama Youth was named best Israeli feature at the 2013 Jerusalem Film Festival.

Once again the European Film Promotion’s (Efp) Film Sales Support (Fss) initiative will come to Toronto to link sales companies from all over Europe to a great array of buyers from across the globe. Supported by the Media Programme of the European Union, Fss has now been aiding the European film industry fro the last 10 years.
"Toronto has and is an important informal market and an important festival for European films, the distributors see the films in a different mood, more quietly, the public screenings are working well. It is a key place to launch a film or to complete previous sales on films that were in Cannes, Venice, Locarno...” (Loïc Magneron, Wide)
“Tiff is a major pillar of the annual festival calendar. Aside from a proliferation of North American buyers, it also attracts top tier international distributors so a favorable reception at Tiff can significantly increase a film's commercial prospects”. (Andrew Orr, Independent)
Due to the limited amount of resources, only 52 out of the 60 films submitted to the Efp will receive financial support to be marketed during the Tiff, which runs from September 5 to 15. This year alone, 372 films total, over 150 from Europe, will screen at the festival many of which will see their world or international premiers there.

Due to the limited amount of resources, only 52 out of the 60 films submitted to the Efp will receive financial support to be marketed during the Tiff, which runs from September 5 to 15. This year alone, 372 films total, over 150 from Europe, will screen at the festival many of which will see their world or international premiers there.

The Motovun Film Festival (July 27-31) wrapped with Croatian director Bobo Jelcic’s A Stranger winning the Bauer Award for best film from the territories of the former Yugoslavia in the past year.
The winner of the Bauer Award was chosen after three rounds of voting by seven film critics and seven professionals from the region. The prize includes €5,000 as well as €10,000 in post-production services from Teleking.
The film recently triumphed at Croatia’s national Pula Film Festival, where it won seven Golden Arenas, including best film, director, script and two lead roles. Next outing for A Stranger is the competition of the Sarajevo Film Festival.

Most of the Greek films that have been making the festival rounds the last few years have been mostly mute on the financial and political crisis in Greece but director Thanos Anastopoulos' new feature The Daughter (I Kori) is very different from its counterparts in that it not only makes mention of the crisis but uses it as a central part of the story. The 2013 Toronto Film Festival selection grew quite a bit today as the organizers announced the Midnight Madness, Documentary, Vanguard, City to City and Cinematheque selections for this year's festival. Among the title announced there aren't exactly a ton of names that pop off the paper immediately. The Midnight Madness selection will open with Lucky McKee's All Cheerleaders Die in which a young girl who practices the dark arts turns on her best friend after she joins the cheer squad. However, I assume most attention will be on Eli Roth's The Green Inferno, a film in which a group of humanitarians go to the Amazon to help a native tribe only to have the tribe kidnap them and later learn their cannibalistic heritage is very much intact. The Documentary selection includes plenty of familiar faces such as Marcel Ophuls, Claude Lanzmann and Errol Morris and Frank Pavich will be bringing Jodorowsky's Dune,...

★★★★☆ The impressive third feature from Greek director Thanos Anastopoulos, The Daughter (2012) provides an intelligently rendered, gripping drama reflecting the wider issues of Greece's current financial crisis. When 14-year-old Myrto (Savina Alimani) discovers that her father has mysteriously disappeared, she stalks the Athenian streets trying to discover where he's fled to and why. She discovers that he's fleeing outstanding debts and, with her mother more concerned about her new lover, she reacts. Myrto hatches an ill-conceived plot and kidnaps 8-year-old Aggelos (Angelos Papadimas), the son of her father's business partner, whom she blames for her his absence.

- So far, about one third (35 countries to be exact) of the 96 invited to submit their entry for the Academy Awards' Best Foreign Language Picture category have done so. While tomorrow's list will beef up the finally tally, there are three pictures that first caught everyone's attention at Cannes this year that are destined to make it to the final five. After last year's fiasco (the exclusion of Persepolis and 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days), I'm hoping that this year's measures (a new voting system broken into phases) will make sure that voting members don't mess up once again and If I'd had to handicap the race this early on, I'd say The Class, Gomorra and Waltz with Bashir -- all films that are currently being showcased at the 46th Nyff, will each be considered as top tier noms. The 44 titles come from 27 countries across the continent including four from the U.K.
Joe Wright's "Atonement," Nick Broomfield's "Battle for Haditha," Mike Leigh's "Happy-Go-Lucky" and Steve McQueen's "Hunger" will all hope to make the nominations' list with titles such as Kornel Mundruczo's "Delta" from Hungary and Andrzej Wajda's "Katyn" from Poland vying for a place.
In the 20 countries with the most Efa Members, members have voted one national film directly into the selection list.
To complete the list, a selection committee consisting of Efa board members and invited experts have included 24 other titles.

- MoMA and the Film Society of Lincoln Center have announced their rich slate of 26 films with solid picks from the 2007 Cannes and 2008 Sundance film festival titles. the festival opens with Frozen River (see pic above). The fests takes place between March 26th to the 6th of April. "Frozen River," directed by Courtney Hunt (U.S.)In awarding Courtney Hunt the Grand Jury Prize for Drama at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, Quentin Tarantino said of her debut feature, "It put my heart in a vise and proceeded to twist that vise until the last frame." That's pretty significant praise from a filmmaker whose work is as hyperbolic as Hunt's is restrained. But like her supporter, Hunt packs a wallop.
