A Whole Lifetime with Jamie Demetriou review: Not as brilliantly silly as Stath
Image
Jamie Demetriou is so hot right now. From Stath Lets Flats to his scene-stealing cameo in Fleabag, the British-Cypriot comic’s fantastically strange style of comedy has not only won him Baftas, but also caught Hollywood’s eye: he starred in Apple TV Plus’s The Afterparty and is appearing Greta Gerwig’s forthcoming Barbie movie. Before Barbie, though: Demetriou’s biggest project yet, his Netflix musical comedy special A Whole Lifetime with Jamie Demetriou. The comic material is decidedly British, with a Netflix sheen: silly, but lacking the sharpness of Stath or his live sketch characters. It’s that attempt to straddle both worlds that leaves Demetriou’s comedy feeling surprisingly watered down.

In the opening scene, an adult Demetriou lies curled up in a ball, in utero. His life flashes before him in sketch form, the comic playing a lolloping child in a tight primary school uniform, an...

Image
British broadcaster Channel 4 has ordered an apocalyptic comedy series starring Friday Night Dinner and The Inbetweeners star Simon Bird.

The ad-supported, public service broadcaster has handed the six-part order to Jax Media, the company behind series including Netflix’s Russian Doll and HBO Max’s Search Party, and Universal International Studios, the London-led global production arm of the NBCU studio.

Everyone Else Burns explores life in a hyper-religious community and asks: how does an idiosyncratic family navigating modern day life protect themselves from eternal hell fire?

Bird stars alongside Kate O’Flynn, Amy James-Kelly, Lolly Adefope, Al Roberts, Soph Galustian, Harry Connor, Ali Khan, Lloyd Griffith, Kadiff Kirwan, Morgana Robinson, Arsher Ali, Liam Williams, Kath Hughes, and Seb Cardinal.

Cardinal Burns interview: Banksy told us he shops at B&Q, not Homebase
Sketch shows are a notoriously tricky genre to get right.

But two comedians doing it good and proper are Seb Cardinal and Dustin Demri-Burns.

The pair's loud, lithe and sometimes gloriously daft show Cardinal Burns exploded onto E4 in 2012, after which it was nominated for Best Comedy at the BAFTAs and scooped Best Sketch Show at the British Comedy Awards.

A second series was swiftly commissioned, this time moving to Channel 4, and the first episode airs tonight (April 30).

Digital Spy met the duo at a pub in North London to talk about going mainstream, having genitals stuck to their faces and what's so good about bad gigs…

What did you make of the reaction to series one?

Dustin: "We were overjoyed. It's what you hope for. Obviously you put it out and you want people to laugh and to enjoy it."

Seb: "I think we were sort of surprised...

Jake chats to the comedians behind Cardinal Burns - Seb Cardinal and Dustin Demri-Burns - and finds out what's in store in series 2

So imagine it's a sunny day. You're out on the estate enjoying the rare bright weather. All around you is vibrant celebration. Kids kicking a football around gleefully, tunes pumping out of a stereo and girls testing themselves and each other's skipping rope skills. Now imagine that two drunken businessmen have staggered over, still clutching their fried chicken, loudly demanding that they want a go. You join in watching what is sure to be a lesson in painful humiliation... except they're good. In fact they're better than good. They're nailing each precise jump with a bit of flare. Now they're doing tricks you never imagined were possible. Handstands and flips! Everyone is stunned. The ropes come to a stop, and the crowd cheers.
