Don’t judge a book by its cover can be best said for Wind Breaker. When the anime first came out, people were hesitant. They feared it would become yet another Tokyo Revengers, but boy, we were wrong all along.
CloverWorks took Satori Nii’s manga quite seriously. They understood their assignment well and treated it like the passion project it truly is. The recent episode is a perfect example of that.
With superior animation, Season 2 might eventually outrival Demon Slayer. There’s an interesting connection behind it, and it all makes sense. How so? Well, let’s unpack this, now, shall we?
Wind Breaker’s stellar animation leaves fans stunned
Edgy outlaws fighting street thugs is becoming quite an overused Shonen trope, right? Well, not with Wind Breaker mainly because the series is a spin on the yanki genre. That’s especially the case with the splendid animation.

Wind Breaker is creating buzz in the anime scene. Ever since the series premiered it is hailed for its impeccable fights. They’re top-tier and slick when it comes to how well-animated they are but that’s not it.
Recently, CloverWorks went above and beyond with Tsubaki’s character. The pole dancing scene was truly a cut above the rest. It was contentious to some, but for the studio, it’s a great feat nonetheless. But we have a problem here.
As iconic as the scene was, the studio needs to take it up a notch with this character. That is, the King truly deserves his fight in the upcoming episodes. It would be nothing short of legendary. How? Well, read more to find out!

Wind Breaker might be a series about a delinquent school, but the characters in it are surprisingly heartfelt. The protagonist, Sakura, was supposed to be a cold-hearted and detached individual, but the reality is quite different. Sakura is a softie inside, and that is pretty visible in both the anime and the manga.
But the series is already in its second season, and Sakura’s tsundere personality hasn’t taken a single break. So while it had made him look like a fascinating and refreshing character before, now it feels plain cringe.
Sakura’s tsundere personality is getting a bit cliché in Wind Breaker
Tsundere characters in the anime world are a dime a dozen. These are characters who are rough and tough on the outside, but gradually reveal an affectionate side. Sakura clearly falls in this category. When he was first introduced, he was obsessed with the idea of being on top,...

Wind Breaker is an anime with high school students fighting gangsters and vandals to keep peace in a town, and it actually sounds insane, unironically. The intense action is offset by the hilarious interactions between the many distinct characters. Each episode seems to have a separate theme, with characters growing and developing rapidly.
The astonishing part about Wind Breaker is that, even when the series is about protecting the weak and Bofurin being the shield of the town, it is not just ‘strength’ that is respected. Even a character like Nirei, who is deathly scared of fights and being hit, is an incredibly complex and compelling character, possibly surpassing Sakura.
A weak character could paradoxically be a very strong one
Akihiko Nirei is an excited first-year student of Furin High School. After witnessing the way the ‘Bofurin’ protect the town from external forces and delinquents, the ambitious Nirei wishes to...

As if Season 1 of Wind Breaker wasn’t already popular enough, now with its Season 2 here, things are looking extremely well for the adaptation. Fans are constantly waiting for the next episodes, and there’s always something new you see with each installment.
One of the major reasons behind its success is its number of well-written characters despite being a delinquent anime. The characters can often come off so relatable that you might even end up rooting for each of them.
But here’s the unexpected part. Although fans are quite impressed by Sakura’s character so far, the author didn’t even consider him to be the Mc at first!

In the past few years, anime series featuring delinquent characters have seen a rise as the genre has become quite popular among fans. These series specifically focus on the Yanki genre that embodies the “lawbreaker” youth and portray the story through their perspective. The most recent addition to this was Wind Breaker by Satoru Nii.
Wind Breaker originally started as a manga in 2021, but it earned real fame when the series got an anime adaptation that was released last year. Currently, the series is on its second season, and fans are loving the unique approach that Wind Breaker brings to the genre.
The biggest name within the Yanki genre is definitely Bucchigiri?!, but Wind Breaker might be the only series that is better. There are five major reasons that prove that Wind Breaker is the best delinquent anime.

If you love edgy and sassy delinquents, then Wind Breaker should be on your watchlist. The anime has taken the Shonen genre by storm ever since it premiered and boy, it lives up to its rankings and the hype.
Truly, the characters have the most drip, and it goes beyond the fashion and fights. The whole concept of outlaws protecting Makochi Town deviates from the norms however, it also makes it a bit silly.
How so? Well, it strays from logic on several occasions. This would make you want to question the entire premise of the show itself. However, there are reasons why the series is the best anime of 2025, and here’s why.
Wind Breaker strays from logic
Wind Breaker is all about the sass, pizzazz, and all that jazz, and we’re all basking in it. Who doesn’t love a good anime with power-packed fights and edgy delinquents?...

It wouldn’t be an overstatement to call Wind Breaker the next thing. It is packed with action, emotional buildup, and most of all, diverse characters. They’re layered and well-written, but there are downsides to that as well.
Of late, Satoru Nii may have struck a nerve with his manga. This didn’t sit well with some fans. The series got unnecessary backlash and hate from the fans, especially with its recent episodes.
But here’s the thing: while the manga received harsh criticism for its queer representation, One Piece conveniently got away with it. So why is it that one series shoulders the hate while the other gets a pass? Let’s find out.
Wind Breaker facing backlash is simply nonsensical

Wind Breaker is all the buzz, and we’re here for it. The top-tier manga is often compared to Tokyo Revengers, and quite honestly, fans aren’t lying one bit. It peaks in many aspects: storytelling, fights, and most specifically, characters.
It isn’t a cliche delinquent story focused on showdowns and epic duels. Yes, that’s very much there; however, Satoru Nii subverts our expectations through one particular character.
Through Tsubakino, the mangaka challenged a confusing trope in the Shonen genre. It highlights the need for proper representation. Also, it breaks the mould with characterization, and here’s how.
Tsubaki’s character challenges a confusing Shonen trope
Other than fights and edgy delinquents, Satoru Nii delivered wholesome elements in his series. That is, through well-written characters who feel more familiar and relatable. One such character is Tasuku Tsubakino (Tsubaki).

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure might be primarily known for its characters’ unique poses, but it is also pretty popular for its character designs. Yes, they are fantastical, with a hint of the absurd, and have the fandom in a chokehold. But much like in Wind Breaker, these clothing choices have specific stories to tell.
Wind Breaker has become pretty popular recently. But not everyone has been able to notice how the series presents a subtle storytelling technique via its characters’ uniforms or individual clothes. And this is something that has already been tried and tested out in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure.

Wind Breaker is like Haikyu!! given the wholesome dynamics between the boys. Or it’s Tokyo Revengers, but not as horrible, or maybe it’s just simply Wind Breaker. That’s the point of the anime as well: just be who you are! Fights have always been the main focus of the anime, or so it seemed like, but Tasuku Tsubakino’s introduction highlighted its core concept and theme.
The fights and the conflicts between different schools are merely a tool to explore the characters. Tsubaki is an extremely fun character, but not everyone is taking him kindly. A part of the audience has been quite vocal about their hate and disapproval of Tsubaki. These fans have ignored what the anime is all about.
The hate surrounding Tsubaki is senseless
Tsubaki is one of the Four Kings of Bofurin, and his introduction made fans question if we finally have a female character joining the cast.

Wind Breaker has taken the internet by storm, and it truly deserves all the hype. The characters, the designs, the music, but most of all the animation, it is well-done. It isn’t your bog standard delinquent series fashioned after a Yanki culture. No, it is more than that.
The Bofurin are zesty, spunky, and have everyone’s backs, and CloverWorks made sure fans are hooked to the end. However, every Shonen has its fair share of pitfalls, and Satoru Nii’s series is no different. This had to do with the anti-shonen fights in the anime.
Now you may wonder where this is coming from? Well, for the studio, it meant that they had to crack the cocoon, which they did. They did so brilliantly that they may have set a benchmark for others to come. This is why the “anti-shonen” fights are the anime’s plus point, and here’s how.

Wind Breaker breaks away from the typical superpower-filled Shonen series to show high school delinquents who strive to be at the top. In a way, it could be compared to Tokyo Revengers but with none of the time-traveling complexities. Over the years, it has developed a niche audience.

Slick fights, emotional buildup, and character depth are what make Wind Breaker truly sensational. Since its first season, it has gained popularity, viewership, and a dedicated fan base due to its unique premise and character development.
What fuels a good story is its well-written plot, but also the worldbuilding and characters. The ability to make them unconventional is a task indeed, which Satoru Nii did brilliantly. There’s Sou, Umemiya, and Sakura; however, one pivotal character was created early on.
Yes, even before the manga was serialized, Nii conceptualized this character. The preplanned approach makes it all too special, and so does the backstory. This connects well with the major themes of self-discovery and expression, which are executed seamlessly.
Wind Breaker mangaka preplanned this character
Wind Breaker is anything but a cliche of guys saving the day with their fists. Not at all, especially with how they hone and find their strengths.

A bunch of delinquents saving the town at the nick of time is just about right. That’s precisely what Wind Breaker is all about. There are fights, emotional moments, humor, and sass, which make it a wholesome visual treat. By now, we know that it isn’t merely action that drives a Shonen series.
The storytelling is equally important which Satoru Nii does best with his characters. Be it Sakura or Umemiya, his characters resonate with viewers on a molecular level. However, the mangaka had some other plans regarding his magnum opus.
He wasn’t planning to write it in a cliche Yanki fashion but had a more sporty approach to it. The ease and flow make the series more original, authentic, and familiar, so much so that some even compare it with Tokyo Revengers. But what is it exactly that makes it more buffed? Let’s find out.

Horimiya, Black Butler, and Spy x Family all have one thing in common and that is, their animation studio. CloverWorks is one of the finest animation studios whose work spans different genres. Be it mecha, romance, or adventure anime, we asked for it and they delivered it!
With Wind Breaker, however, they upped the ante. The manga has some solid fight scenes, emotional moments, and heartbreaking scenes that make the narrative all too compelling. The studio, however, didn’t hold back from executing these elements to a T.
The recent episode, in particular, proved that Satoru Nii’s series isn’t all fight scenes and edgy teenagers strutting around like delinquents. Such is the case with Haruka Sakura, who is probably everyone’s favorite character by now. This fits perfectly with the series’ themes of strength, resilience, and resolve.

April 2025 marks the return of Wind Breaker. The street-fighting series carved out a niche among a crowded slate with exceptional combat choreography and an ensemble of compelling delinquent characters, delivering one of the best new anime in 2024. Produced by CloverWorks, Wind Breaker Season 1 masterfully adapted the first 41 chapters of Satoru Nii's manga, ending on a tantalizing cliffhanger promising continued manga-loyal anime adaptation.
While many expected another boy-crazy fighting anime, Wind Breaker defied expectations, delivering a deeply nuanced story told through the Heterochromatic eyes of its protagonist, Haruka Sakura, about belonging and purpose. With Season 2 officially confirmed and a teaser trailer already generating buzz, fans can begin piecing together what the second season holds based on manga content, production patterns, and the natural progression of the story's escalating conflicts.
