‘Dreams of a Life’ Filmmaker Carol Morley Set to Direct Adaptation of Her Novel ‘7 Miles Out’ (Exclusive)
Image
“Dreams of a Life” director Carol Morley is in pre-production on a feature film adaptation of her semi-autobiographical novel “7 Miles Out,” Variety has learned.

First published in 2015, “7 Miles Out” is based on the story of Morley’s troubled adolescence following her father’s suicide. It tells the story of Anne, who, after losing her father in tragic circumstances, finds solace and trouble in the Manchester music scene of the 1970s and ‘80s. The novel takes place over a seven-year time period.

Bafta nominee Morley is writing and directing the adaption while her longtime collaborator Cairo Cannon will produce through the duo’s production vehicle Cannon and Morley Productions.

The film is tentatively due to start shooting this November on location in Manchester.

Morley has previously discussed how difficult it has been to get the film off the ground, not least in having to revisit the painful memories around her father’s death.

‘Broken English’ Review: An Imaginative, Fittingly Eccentric Documentary Pays Starry Tribute to Marianne Faithfull
Image
An eternal “it girl” — charismatic, original and ahead of every curve right up until she died this year aged 78 — British singer-songwriter-actor Marianne Faithfull receives a fulsome, loving tribute with sui generis cinematic whatsit Broken English.

A fittingly weird and wacky portrait of a woman whose career was full of swerves and swoops, this feature flutters between docu-style, seemingly unrehearsed conversations with Faithfull herself in her last months; reflections on her legacy from a studio of female intellectuals; covers of her songs by eminent admirers (such as Beth Orton and Courtney Love); and little bits of staged and written dramatic vignettes, performed by the likes of Tilda Swinton, George MacKay, Sophia Di Martino and Zawe Ashton among others, all pretending to be bureaucrats employed at the Ministry of Not Forgetting.

In other words, it’s a lot like 20,000 Days on Earth, the directors Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard’s breakout...

Tilda Swinton, Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard Lift Lid On Marianne Faithfull Hybrid Doc ‘Broken English’: “She Was Lucid And Funny And Fierce Right Up Until The End” – Venice
Image
Exclusive: Marianne Faithfull, the renowned British singer-songwriter-actress who first catapulted to fame with her 1964 song As Tears Go By, was no stranger to public scrutiny during her extensive career, but what is clear in Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard’s new film Broken English is that she might just be one of the most misunderstood female music artists in recent history.

The bold, hybrid documentary from the BAFTA nominated directors of Nick Cave doc 20,000 Days on Earth is premiering Out of Competition this week at the Venice Film Festival and the project– named after Faithfull’s 1979 studio album of the same name – gives a searingly intimate portrait of a fractured but determined woman whose life was shaped by fame, creativity and relentless public attention.

Faithfull stars alongside longtime friend Tilda Swinton and 1917 actor George MacKay and the project marks one of Faithfull’s last appearances on camera before she...

Marianne Faithfull Doc ‘Broken English’ Acquired by Italy’s I Wonder Pictures Ahead of Venice World Premiere (Exclusive)
Image
Italian distribution company I Wonder Pictures has acquired rights to Venice-bound “Broken English,” a portrait of the late Marianne Faithfull directed by BAFTA nominees Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard.

“Broken English” is set to world premiere in the Out of Competition section at the Venice Film Festival on Aug. 30. Sales and finance outfit Global Constellation handles international sales, with Cinetic Media repping North American rights.

Shot in the last years of Faithfull’s life, and featuring her last recorded performance, “Broken English” captures the singer-songwriter, poet and actor in rare, unguarded moments as she reflects on art, survival and legacy.

With a cast led by Tilda Swinton and George MacKay, the film follows the pair as they take on the roles of investigators within the framework of the Ministry of Not Forgetting, “an undercover poetic construct committed to rescuing cultural memory from oblivion.” Faithfull becomes its first “subject,” rendered through a tapestry of interviews,...

The Marvels, released in 2023, is the sequel to Captain Marvel (2019) and a follow-up to the TV miniseries Ms. Marvel (2022). Nia DaCosta directed the film and co-wrote the script with Megan McDonnell and Elissa Karasik. They are joined by Zawe Ashton, Gary Lewis, Park Seo-joon, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Saagar Shaikh, and Samuel L. Jackson. In the story, the three heroes start swapping places whenever they use their powers, forcing them to team up as “the Marvels.”

Despite the big names and superhero hype, The Marvels flopped at the box office. It made $84.5 million in the U.S. and Canada and $121.6 million in other countries, for a total of $206.1 million worldwide. The Marvels, released in 2023, is a sequel to Captain Marvel (2019) and also continues the story from the TV miniseries Ms. Marvel (2022). Nia DaCosta directed the film and co-wrote the script with Megan McDonnell and Elissa Karasik. The story follows Carol Danvers, played by Brie Larson, Monica Rambeau, played by Teyonah Parris, and Kamala Khan, played by Iman Vellani.

The Marvels Director Nia DaCosta Suggests MCU Sequel Suffered Due To "Lack Of A Really Solid Script"
Image
Despite decent reviews, 2023's The Marvels only ended up taking in just over $200 million worldwide to claim the dubious honor of becoming Marvel Studios' lowest-grossing movie of all time.

The MCU sequel certainly proved to be divisive, but the same could be said of Captain Marvel, and that went on to become a $1 billion smash when it was released back in 2019.

While speaking to THR about taking the helm of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, director Nia DaCosta suggested that the major issue with The Marvels lay with the script.

“Making the 28 Years Later sequel was one of the best filmmaking experiences I’ve had. One of the issues I had with Candyman and Marvels was the lack of a really solid script, which is always gonna just wreak havoc on the whole process. But Alex Garland hands you a script, and you’re like, ‘This is amazing.’ You don...

Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein First Look Photos Decoded: Is it the Darkest Netflix Film Yet?
Image
Guillermo del Toro is expanding his own private monsterverse over at Netflix with his upcoming film, Frankenstein. And the first-look photos from the fantasy horror are just as moody and regal as a del Toro project is expected to be. Filled with icy frames and forlorn monsters, Frankenstein threatens to redefine tragic horror more than terrify its audience into submission.

Meanwhile, it becomes difficult to categorize the Netflix horror as a dark movie. Guillermo del Toro’s vision board is a mish-mash of eccentric characters voyaging through a hellscape of their own making and suffering a fate more terrifying than death itself. But creation, death, and hell are tales as old as time, neither unorthodox nor darkly shocking.

Guillermo del Toro Expands His Monsterverse With Netflix Horror Frankenstein

In an interview with Variety, the Mexican auteur said earlier this year:

This film has been on my mind since I was a child — for 50 years.

Disney+ Makes MCU History With New Black Villain Actor Decision

According to a new report, Marvel Studios is making history with its new Black female villain. Fans have seen two Black female big bads so far in the franchise in Loki's Ravonna Renslayer (played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw) and The Marvels' Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton). However, they may get a third in next year's Vision Quest series.

Insider Daniel Richtman reported that a new Marvel Studios Black female villain is on the way in Vision Quest with T'Nia Miller's Jocasta. Miller's casting marks the first time a Black female antagonist has come to the MCU after being previously name-dropped in the franchise. ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’: Why Marvel is facing same ‘woke’ allegations that doomed ‘Snow White’ and other high-profile Disney projects
Image
The Walt Disney Company has been around for more than 100 years, and during that century-plus the studio has developed a reputation for wholesome, all-ages entertainment. Because of that reputation, Disney is often an easy target when it dares to stray from a very narrow definition of "family-friendly."

It’s not uncommon for Hollywood studios to be attacked by conservatives for anything resembling diversity in race, gender, or sexuality. But many right-wing outlets have pushed Disney into the middle of the culture war even when its executives — including CEO Bob Iger — clearly want nothing to do with that.

Within the past week, The Fantastic Four: First Steps has drawn ire among social media commentators for revealing a female Silver Surfer (played by Emmy winner Julia Garner) in the latest trailer, which is being presented among some quarters as evidence of Mouse House's alleged “woke agenda.” If this all sounds familiar, that...

Nia DaCosta
The Marvels director Nia DaCosta hoped for the best, but “the best didn’t happen”
Nia DaCosta
While doing press for her addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Marvels, back in November of 2023, director Nia DaCosta had to defend the fact that she wrapped up her work on that film remotely while prepping another movie, her upcoming drama Hedda. She explained to Jake’s Takes, “It was literally just that they moved the date of the film four different times. So instead of it being a two year process, which I was deeply committed to, it became a three and a half year process. I pushed [Hedda], and then I pushed it again, and then I pushed it again, and then eventually, we all knew ‘Okay, if this pushes again I’m not gonna able to be in L.A. to do the rest of [The Marvels] in person.’ We figured out a way to do it remote. … Everyone was so clear about what the film was, what we wanted,...

The X-Men Confirmed for 'Avengers: Doomsday' Thanks to Everyone's Favorite Big Blue Mutant
Image
Marvel Studios has spent the better part of the day announcing the cast for Avengers: Doomsday, one name at a time — much to the chagrin of Marvel fans — but one cast member stands out more than others. Kelsey Grammer has been confirmed to reprise his role as Beast in the 2026 Avengers film after most recently appearing in The Marvels. Grammar’s Beast shows in the post-credits scene for the film after Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) finds herself in another dimension thanks to her effort to close a portal left behind by Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton). Patrick Stewart, famed for playing Professor Charles Xavier in Fox's X-Men universe and in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, will also star in Avengers: Doomsday, along with Ian McKellen, who will reprise his role as Magneto for the first time since X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2014.

Alan Cumming will also reprise his role as Nightcrawler,...

Image
Did Keanu Reeves endanger a crew member in John Wick 4? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Keanu Reeves, who’s basically Hollywood’s nicest guy, found himself in a major on-set accident, all while shooting one of the wildest action movies ever.

The film, packed with insane car chases, nunchucks, and just about every type of action you could imagine, took a physical toll on everyone involved. But Reeves kept his cool, despite the chaos. “Everyone is pretty tired—but it’s the best kind of tired,” Keanu said. “It’s like you climbed a mountain now you’re resting.” Sure, Keanu, but let’s get back to that head-cutting bit.

Reeves confessed, “I made a mistake once—I cut a gentleman’s head open.” No big deal, right? Yikes. But that wasn’t the only mishap. One poor soul actually got hit by a car. “He was in the car, so...

When Kevin Hart’s Back-End Strategy Made Him A Hollywood Millionaire, Earning Up To $30M For Jumanji”
Image
Kevin Hart’s Back-End Salary Strategy ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Here’s the secret behind Kevin Hart’s massive Hollywood paycheck: it’s not about what you see on screen but about what happens before the cameras roll. While most stars sign up for big upfront paydays, Hart’s got a different playbook. His genius move? The back-end deal.

Take Jumanji: The Next Level (2019), a film that made over $800M globally. Kevin didn’t grab a fat paycheck up front. Instead, he bet on the movie’s success, taking less money in exchange for a cut of the profits. And guess what? That gamble paid off big time. Hart told James Corden, “If I had to make a rough guess… see, I’m a ‘back end player,’ so it’s not about what you take upfront. I don’t want upfront money for the movie, so I took less money and...

Hold up, Keanu Reeves has just dethroned everyone else in Hollywood. We’re talking about the actor who’s raked in more money from a single franchise than anyone in history. No, not Tom Cruise. Not Will Smith. Keanu. The Matrix franchise has stacked those zeros for him, coming in at a jaw-dropping $156M.

With a modest $63M budget, the movie blew up with a massive $467.2M at the box office. But it wasn’t just the revolutionary special effects or mind-bending plot that made waves—it was Keanu’s paycheck.

While Cruise, Robert Downey Jr., Bruce Willis, and Will Smith pulled in about $100 million from their respective franchises, Keanu cruised in a whole other lane,...

Ms. Marvel: Brad Winderbaum Says Iman Vellani's Kamala Khan Is "Top Of Mind" For McU's Future
Image
Though one could argue that the Disney+ Ms. Marvel series did suffer a dip in quality as it went on, many fans considered Iman Vellani's Kamala Khan to be one of the more compelling new characters to be introduced to the MCU post Infinity Saga, and it sounds like Marvel Studios has major plans for young hero going forward.

Towards the end of The Marvels, Khan channels her inner Nick Fury when she recruits Hawkeye's Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) to the Young Avengers (whether that'll be the team's name remains to be seen), possibly suggesting that Ms. Marvel will find herself in a leadership position once full roster is assembled.

While speaking to THR about the third season of What If...?, Head of Marvel Television and Animation Brad Winderbaum indicated that Khan is going to be integral to the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"I love Iman.
