Was looked after by special surgeon Dr. Claudia Costa

In 1999 he suffered a broken right leg, shoulder, and left wrist, when he crashed his Repsol Honda at 200+km/h at Jerez, Spain. He was immediately brought to the U.S. after the accident for corrective surgery which included inserting two plates and 12 screws in his right leg, and a plate in his left forearm. Toward the end of the year he announced his retirement due to injuries from his crash

Was considered to be part of the "Golden Era" of motorcycling racing, the late 80s and the early 90s.

Began riding motorcycles at the age of nine

In 1992 he crashed and broke his right leg and missed four races while recovering from the injury. Left with a restricted range of movement his team created a hand-operated rear braking system to his Rothmans Honda so he could continue racing.
