Holt grew up in Alpharetta, Georgia and Graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography.
Holt spent a large part of his career traveling the United States with his Vanishing America Project using his passion for adventure, writing and photography to tell stories of the history and fragile nature of our country and our culture.
Unfortunately, The Vanishing America Project was put on hold during the recession of 2008
In 2023, Emmy award winning documentary filmmaker Dagan Beckett asked Holt if he would like to reboot his old Vanishing America Project, but with a positive spin. There was not delay... Holt's answer was an immediate "yes".
