An official Nintendo video shows Zelda from The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom facing a puzzling situation and solving it as only she can. Echoes of Wisdom puts the titular princess in the leading role of her own game, after more than 38 long years of Link stealing the spotlight. The title introduces some unique gameplay elements that give Zelda the ability to solve problems in very creative ways.

The adorable short video from Nintendo of America on YouTube shows Zelda using her special creative powers to solve a particularly tricky puzzle. The video emphasizes a uniquely EoW method of problem-solving, which uses Zelda's Tri Rod to create temporary copies of certain objects. These copies can be used to travel across the land, battle monsters, or, as in this case, get to treasure chests in hard-to-reach places.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom made some big changes to Nintendo's popular franchise but it almost went even further by breaking one of the series' oldest rules. The reveal that players would finally have an opportunity to step into the role of Zelda rather than Link was enough of a surprise to shake up the status quo but the lack of a speaking protagonist left the development team with some problems. While Zelda is known to speak, the series has never had a talking hero.

Speaking to Famitsu, series producer Eiji Aonuma explained that Zelda no longer speaking pushed the developer to consider giving Link a voice, breaking one of the longest-standing rules of the Legend of Zelda: Link doesn't speak. While the Hyrulian Hero may have spoken during early builds of the game, Aonuma admits that it was ultimately scrapped because the team couldn't figure out what he'd actually say.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is one of the easiest Zelda games to break, and one simple technique makes it possible to skip almost all of a major dungeon without much trouble at all. Building on the ideas of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, which encourage thinking outside the box when it comes to puzzles, Echoes of Wisdom gives Zelda a robust set of echoes that can make it easy to circumvent challenges.

Even so, the structure of Echoes of Wisdom is more rigid than its immediate predecessors, and dungeons are typically completed in the room-by-room fashion that's defined the franchise for decades. While you play as Zelda in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, you gain access to a Swordfighter form that gives you many of Link's abilities. This form's power can be upgraded using Might Crystals, which you can find scattered around the map. Some of these crystals can be found in the overworld, hidden inside bushes and behind rock walls, but others are hidden deeper. To find them all, you'll need to really explore every nook and cranny.

There are 150 total Might Crystals in the game, which is more than enough to fully upgrade your Swordfighter form, and you'll even get a small reward from Lueberry once you do. Nintendo and Grezzo's The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is my favorite Zelda game in eighteen years. I don't think that will be true for everyone, especially people who first started the series with Botw or Totk, but for people who missed the more linear approach, and for those players who have stuck with the series through decades, Echoes of Wisdom feels like fan service in the best way possible - and it does this without losing the creativity that made these most recent titles so popular.

Unfortunately, I'm too much of a fan of the bespoke dungeons, multi-tier fetch quests, bustling towns, and item/ability progression offered by previous mainline Legend of Zelda entries for it to ever really stick.
