“This year is going to be our most diverse year yet,” Sheikh told attendees. “After the wildly loved ‘Pushpa 2,’ ‘Dragon,’ and ‘Chhaava,’ we have an exciting lineup of some of the biggest theatrical films coming to Netflix in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.”
Currently streaming is “Test,” Netflix’s first Tamil-language original film, a sports drama featuring R. Madhavan, Nayanthara, and Siddharth. Sheikh also talked up the imminent release of “Jewel Thief,” described as a “high octane heist-action film” starring Saif Ali Khan and Jaideep Ahlawat, scheduled to debut within days of the showcase.

It is astounding what one powerful performance can do to a film, given the correct contextual compulsion. In this well-written but not-so-effectively executed film, Madhavan, in his second grey outing in a row after Shaitaan, plays Saravan, a born loser who dreams of making a scientific breakthrough while trying to wrestle with imminent insolvency and a wife whom he is about to lose.
Saravan has nothing to lose in life. On the other side of the social fence is Arjun, a superstar test cricketer on the skids played by Siddhanth, who seems to rein in his performance at those very moments when he needed to explode on screen.
Less is not more on this occasion. Not when Siddharth’s adversary is played by Madhavan as a no-holds-barred desperado. Watching the likeable but incomplete portrait of ruination and redemption, I wondered what Test would have been had Siddharth played the character a few octaves higher.

Sashikanth’s “Test” justifies its title. It’s an atrocity to bear throughout, as unbearably elongated in a confused stew of clumsily written, patchy scenes as it is irrepressibly dull. Despite a reliable trio of stars, including Madhavan, Siddharth, and Nayanthara, the film never comes alive. It’s stuck in an overly manufactured, sagging bundle of amateurish scenes underlining its thematic angles of those who are victors and others shunted to being lifelong losers. What does it take for the latter to break out and lunge at making a mark, even if violent and coercive?
Arjun (Siddharth) is a once-shining cricketer who now fears a decisive test match between India and Pakistan. In fact, he doubts his capabilities. But more than him, it’s the executive board of the tournament that shows no confidence in him and has fully retreated. They give him the cue that his time is up.
