Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (August 2)

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is a sci-fi action film directed by Wes Ball from a screenplay by Josh Friedman. The 2024 film serves as a standalone sequel to the 2017 film War for the Planet of the Apes and it is the fourth entry into the Planet of the Apes reboot film series and the tenth film in the overall film franchise.

American musical comedy film “Lyle Lyle Crocodile,” is set to release in mainland China cinemas, having received approvals for import and distribution from Chinese authorities. It will play in China from April 15, 2023.

The film was released in North America in early October last year and many other territories at the end of 2022. Parts of Asia have been later to receive the title with Korea and Taiwan play it from January and Japan set to open it from March 24.

The film has grossed $108 million worldwide, with $60.9 million of that coming from international markets and $46.8 million from the North American domestic market, studio backer Sony Pictures reported.

The film which mixes animation and live action is based on a best-selling book series by Bernard Waber.

The Columbia films follow TriStar’s The Woman King and others into the territory.

Adding to the growing list of Hollywood films now being admitted to China, Columbia Pictures has secured release dates in the territory for Adam Driver sci-fi thriller 65 and hybrid musical comedy Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile.

65 will launch theatrically in China on March 31 and Lyle April 15.

Written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods and produced by Sam Raimi, 65 stars Driver as the pilot of a spacecraft that crashes on the Earth of 65 million years ago. Columbia is launching the film in the US this weekend.

Sony’s “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile,” the film adaptation of the children’s books by Bernard Waber, featuring a singing crocodile, bowed at the U.K. and Ireland box office with £2.7 million (3.1 million), according to numbers released by Comscore.

Universal’s “Halloween Ends,” the final instalment in the horror trilogy of sequels to the original 1978 film, starring Jamie Lee Curtis, debuted in second place with £2.1 million. Another horror, Paramount’s “Smile,” collected £1.4 million in third position in its third weekend for a total of £7.2 million.

In fourth place, in its fourth weekend, Universal’s “Ticket to Paradise,” starring Julia Roberts and George Clooney, took £617,041 for a total of £7.7 million.

Rounding off the top five was Warner Bros.’ “Don’t Worry Darling” with £610,841, which now has a total of £9.3 million after four weekends.

Lyle the crocodile is not meant to be judged by his exterior, just like Bernard Waber’s childrens book from which he originated. If both were judged by their covers, readers and viewers would surely miss out.

“We made the movie because we loved the book,” said director Josh Gordon in an interview with TheWrap. “And the story behind the book, which to us was really about embracing joy and the power of love to save people and unlock potential.”

“Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” tells (and sings) the story of a stage-shy crocodile who has the voice of an angel (Shawn Mendes). Lyle gets discovered by Hector P. Another weekend brings another serious dilemma for moviegoers: should Friday night be spent singing along with a talking crocodile or solving a mystery with three Hollywood superstars? Based on the box office numbers, the answer is ... neither! Why solve a crime or sing along when you can scream in terror thanks to Paramount's latest horror flick, "Smile."

In its second weekend at the box office, "Smile" is still going very strong. It's hard to believe that Parker Finn's directorial debut was once set to arrive exclusively to Paramount+, and execs have plenty to smile about after making the wise choice to premiere it in theaters instead. Per Variety, the film is now expected to beat out two other wide releases after earning 5.4 million on Friday from 3,659 theaters. This puts it ahead of both "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile" and "Amsterdam," which earned 3.5 million and 2.6 million, respectively.

With Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile now playing in theaters, I recently got so speak with directors Will Speck and Josh Gordon about helming the adaptation of the popular children's books of the same name by author Bernard Waber. During the wide-ranging conversation, they talked about why they wanted Shawn Mendes as the titular crocodile who loves singing and baths, what it’s like test screening a movie with a theater filled with kids, how making a musical means you’re making the movie well in advance of your shoot, and future projects like Distant with Anthony Ramos and Naomi Scott and how they’re making a movie musical about the classic video game The Oregon Trail with Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

There’s one key question gripping the world this weekend: will the box office be smiling, or will it be Lyling?

It's a bit surprising that Bernard Waber's children's story "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile" hasn't already been made into a theatrical kids' film. After all, ever since its publication back in 1965, countless children have learned about the power of friendship and good Samaritanism through this friendly crocodile. While there was a straight-to-tv special released in 1987, this timeless tale hadn't been explored or reinvented -- until now.

Directors Will Speck and Josh Gordon signed on to direct a new script based on the classic story in 2021, with a screenplay written by William Davies. And it’s very Hollywood to want to turn that beloved series of bedtime books into the unwieldy, CGI-splotched musical pablum that is “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile.”

Even with a mustachioed Javier Bardem doing his bonkers best to evoke a Fellini-esque sideshow vibe as flamboyant entertainer Hector P. Valenti, the titular amphibian’s first owner, if you didn’t know that the frenetic and tinny “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” had modestly charming literary origins, you’d swear the title of this corporatized kiddie-franchise fodder was a cheeky alternative acronym for LLC.

But hey, there has to be something at the other end of the quality spectrum from the joyful do-good magic of “Paddington,” and this overwrought, clunky creature-teacher-feature...

It has been three months since Universal’s “Minions: The Rise of Gru” became the most successful family film at the box office since theaters reopened. “Lyle Lyle Crocodile” won’t reach such lofty heights, but Sony/Columbia hopes that a lack of kid-friendly fare since midsummer will help turn it into a hit.

Almost 60 years after famous children’s author Bernard Waber published “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile,” the story is finally getting a live-action adaptation.

The 1965 picture book, a sequel to “The House on East 88th Street,” follows a saltwater crocodile navigating the streets of New York City. At the worldwide red carpet premiere on Sunday, the cast and crew discussed the process of threshing out a grander narrative based on the ten books in the “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” series.

Shawn Mendes, Stevie Wonder, Elton John and more are on the soundtrack to the upcoming animated movie “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile!” Mendes, as the voice of the titular character, also revealed that he will be sharing one of the original tracks he wrote for the set titled “Heartbeat,” next Friday (Sept. 30).

He is credited on eight tracks on the list and is also joined by co-stars Constance Wu and Javier Bardem, as well as Anthony Ramos. The full soundtrack will be available for streaming on Oct. 7, the same day as the film’s official premiere.

What exactly is “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile?” It’s a kids musical about a crocodile! He wears a scarf, and he can sing! And he’s voiced by pop artist Shawn Mendes.

On Wednesday, Sony Pictures released the first trailer for “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile,” which is a live-action movie featuring Mendes as the singing, dancing, CGI reptile based on the children’s book series by Bernard Waber.

The film follows the Primm family, played by Constance Wu, Scoot McNairy and Winslow Fegley, as they move to New York City and find waiting for them in their bathroom tub Lyle… who we’ll remind you is a CGI singing crocodile. He also loves caviar. Shawn Mendes is set to join the cast of Sony’s live-action hybrid musical film based on the children’s book “Lyle, Lyle Crocodile.” The “Señorita” singer will voice the film’s title reptile, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

Mendes will also contribute original songs for the film, and he’ll work with “La La Land” songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul on the original music, as well as Ari Afsar, Emily Gardner Xu Hall, Mark Sonnenblick and Joriah Kwamé.

Javier Bardem faced many challenges in bringing Desi Arnaz to life in Amazon’s Being the Ricardos, and he is being recognized for his efforts by his peers with a Screen Actors Guild nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama on Wednesday.

“I’m very proud and so happy that people are reacting this way to the performance,” Bardem tells Deadline shortly after the nominations were announced on Wednesday. “This was a challenging performance in so many ways, mainly because I was portraying an iconic person and that’s always very scary and very challenging.”
