Uprising Review: Stunning Visuals Meet Powerful Storytelling
Image
In Uprising, directed by Kim Sang-man and co-written by Park Chan-wook, we explore a narrative that challenges standard storytelling conventions. This film, which premiered at the Busan International Film Festival and is now available on Netflix, is more than just a historical drama; it also reflects current cultural issues.

Set in the late 16th century Joseon Dynasty during the Imjin War, the film delves into the complex relationship between Cheon-yeong, a servant, and Jong-ryeo, a lord. Their childhood friendship serves as a lens through which to examine themes of loyalty and class struggle, echoing current discussions of privilege and power dynamics.

The nonlinear narrative style reflects the era’s chaos, encouraging viewers to recreate emotional journeys through flashbacks. This complexity resonates with the storytelling approaches of directors such as Noah Baumbach, who enhance the dramatic stakes of the film. Ju Sung-lim’s cinematography captures Korea’s haunting beauty, while a...

Uprising Ending Explained: Who Wins the Final Sword Fight?
Image
Director Kim Sang-man’s Uprising is a historical epic on a human scale. At the start, Cheon-yeong (Gang Dong-won) and Yi Jong-ryeo (Park Jeong-min) are unlikely friends — the former forced into slavery by family debt, the latter the privileged scion of Cheon-yeong’s new owners. This family of the deputy minister of defense expects the lumbering Jong-ryeo to become a military officer, so the adroit swordsman Cheon-yeong is enlisted as his fighting tutor, and they become something like brothers.

When the two reach adulthood, Japan invades the Korean Peninsula, the Joseon Dynasty begins to fracture, and the furious lower classes burn down Gyeongbokgung palace. In the scuffle, Jong-ryeo’s wife takes her and her child’s lives rather than be helped by Cheon-yeong — a “brute.” Based on bad intel, Jong-ryeo blames the impudent Cheon-yeong for their deaths and swears revenge as both men wander the country, fighting the Japanese...

Netflix’s Uprising Explores the Imjin War and the Fight for Freedom in Joseon
Gang Dong-won in Peninsula (2020)
Uprising is Netflix’s latest Korean action-war epic that takes viewers on a historical journey, spotlighting the friendship between two men from different social classes. Set against the backdrop of late 16th century Joseon during the Imjin War, the film chronicles the relationship between Cheon-yeong, a skilled nobi (slave) played by Broker’s Gang Dong-won, and Jong-ryeo, the privileged son of a noble family, portrayed by Park Jeong-min (The 8 Show). Despite growing up together, their friendship is shaped by the rigid class system that governs their lives, reflecting the deep-rooted societal inequalities of the time.

The Imjin War: A Catalyst for Conflict

In 1592, Japan, under the rule of warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi, launched an invasion of Korea, setting off the seven-year Imjin War. The conflict, though primarily a military struggle, had deep social consequences for the Korean Peninsula, which was then under the rule of the Joseon Dynasty. At the...

‘Uprising’ Netflix Review: Korean Period Drama Might Give You A Headache
Image
Don’t get me wrong, the second I see the name Park Chan-Wook, I’m sat up, but I had a really hard time sitting through the new film he co-wrote, Uprising. I think it’s something like when your thoughts and your words don’t match; we all know that the man is terrific at making convoluted films with fantastic twists, but when the job of presenting the story is someone else’s, there’s a chance it won’t land in the same way. Not everyone’s execution is the same, and that’s the gap that makes Uprising a little bit difficult to watch. But, at the same time, if you’re a fan of some bloodshed and cool action shots, then Uprising might be right up your alley. The film tells a story of brotherhood and friendship in the Joseon period. Cheon-Yeong is enslaved to be...

‘Uprising’ Star Gang Dong-won Embraces Producer Role, Aims to Pick Up Stalled Hollywood Career: ‘I Want to Work With Everyone in the World Who Is Talented’
Image
Gang Dong-won, cuts a thrilling figure as a slave-turned-rebel warrior in “Uprising,” the sumptuous period action movie that was the opening gala title of this week’s Busan International Film Festival. The role further cements his reputation as one of Korea’s most versatile and charismatic actors.

But the Korean star is also intent on becoming a film producer and on reprising a stalled Hollywood career.

“’Broker,’ the film which went to Cannes in 2022, was my first producer role. And I’m producing a few other projects, right now,” Gang told Variety. He insists however that he is not turning his back on acting.

“I want to act more. That’s why I’m producing too. I love my job. And started to produce because I have ideas that I want to become projects. For example, I wrote a synopsis two years ago, and a screenwriter is now writing the script.

‘Uprising’ Review: Park Chan-wook Scripts a Fun Historical Epic That Sorely Misses His Directorial Touch
Image
There are several moments in “Uprising” — a spirited but overstretched Korean epic set during the years following the 1589 rebellion of Jeong Yeo-rip — where it feels gleefully obvious that the film was written by Park Chan-wook, whose mordant sense of humor and operatic approach to violence stick out from this story like an artfully framed sword lodged into a dead soldier’s neck.

Alas, those moments are severely outnumbered by the ones in which it’s just as obvious that the film was directed by someone else.

While former art director and frequent Park collaborator Kim Sang-man brings a rousing bloodlust to this fast-paced saga of revolt and betrayal, the unwieldy war story he’s forced to wrestle into submission can’t help but feel a bit shapeless without the precise sculpting of Park’s camera. “Uprising” is too watchable and well-staged to suggest that Kim was set up to fail,...

Busan International Film Festival Opens with Controversial Netflix Film
Soulèvement (2024)
The Busan International Film Festival in South Korea opened this year with an unexpected and controversial choice – an action thriller produced by Netflix. “Uprising” marks the first time the prestigious festival has selected a film distributed by a major streaming service to launch the event.

Typically, the Busan festival highlights independent films looking for international exposure. Festival director Park Dosin said they hoped to try “a more obviously popular film” to kick off the proceedings. However, some in the Korean film industry argue this sets a troubling precedent for an event devoted to independent cinema.

Produced by Netflix and directed by Kim Sang-man, “Uprising” features a star-studded Korean cast including Gang Dong-won and Park Jeong-min. The historical action thriller will debut on Netflix’s streaming platform shortly after its festival screening. This bypasses a traditional theatrical release and emphasizes Netflix’s growing role in the Korean entertainment market.

Image
Programmers at the Busan International Film Festival have given their opening gala to “Uprising,” an action thriller with an all-star Korean cast that hails not from a traditional Korean studio, but from Netflix — the global streaming platform that has both disrupted and elevated the South Korean content industry.

Selectors have brushed aside criticism that the choice of a film that will skip a theatrical release and be available online within a couple of weeks is a troubling precedent. Instead, they have pointed out that the festival has long programmed TV series and also operates a content awards ceremony that is open to films, TV series and made-for-online content.

At a press presentation for the opening title on Wednesday, festival programmer Park Dosin framed a response in terms of experimentation and exploration. “First, I enjoyed the film and was able to forget about the format while watching it. Second, independent films...

Uprising First Look From Netflix
Image
What led two once-loyal friends to face each other as enemies on the battlefield? Netflix has revealed the official teaser trailer and poster for Uprising, which will premiere on the streaming service on October 11, 2024.

Korea Box Office: ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Opens Fifth Behind a Panda Documentary as Pre-Holiday Theatrical Business Stalls
Image
Cinema box office in South Korea amounted to a dismal $5.45 million over the weekend, propelling “Alien: Romulus” back to top spot, despite the film’s steep week-on-week decline. Among new releases there was joy for a Korean-produced panda documentary and disappointment for “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.”

“Alien: Romulus” earned $905,000 between Friday and Sunday, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council. That represented a 45% week-on-week decline and market share of less than 17%, but it pushed the horror franchise title to a $14.0 million cumulative since releasing on Aug. 14.

Early September has historically been a weak spot on the calendar for Korean cinema business as the summer season fades out and the biggest local titles delay their releases until the Chuseok (or Korean thanksgiving) holiday season towards the end of the month. The latest Friday-Sunday aggregate followed that seasonal pattern and represented the third weakest weekend haul of the year.
