Top 10 Best Guy Ritchie Movies
Image
Guy Ritchie is without a doubt one of the most productive filmmakers working today, as he has already made six films since the beginning of the 2020s, with the two additional features “In the Grey” and “Wife & Dog” coming out soon. While Ritchie’s latest film, “Fountain of Youth,” is a cheap “Indiana Jones” rip-off that ranks as one of his worst efforts, it’s impressive how consistent he has been since his rather humble origins. The 1990s saw many young writer/directors trying to create their own style of twisty, dark comedic neo-noir crime thrillers that were influenced by the work that Quentin Taranntino did on “Pulp Fiction” and “Reservoir Dogs.” However, Ritchie crafted a uniquely British, haphazard style of storytelling that introduced the new subgenre of “underground London crime capers,” which has itself spawned many imitators.

Ritchie has worked at every stage of the Hollywood system; while...

15 Greatest Post-WW2 War Movies of All Time, Ranked
Image
War movies have always been a controversial topic in Hollywood, particularly due to the politics surrounding them. Most filmmakers tend to stay away from them, while others try to stick to World War I or World War II-related films. The post-WW2 war movies mostly deal with the American soldiers fighting the wars in other countries, which is a controversial topic in itself.

Over the years, filmmakers have tackled topics like the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, the war on drugs in the bordering countries, and the presence of the US forces in Afghanistan. These films often explore the moral ambiguity and the dehumanizing nature of such wars. Some films explore the physical and mental toll that wars have on the soldiers. Here are some of the best films tackling these issues.

'Road House 2' Will See Jake Gyllenhaal Reunite With Director Guy Ritchie
Image
The Jake Gyllenhaal-led remake of the 80s action classic Road House was a big hit for Amazon last year, and the sequel has now snatched up the perfect director. After some rumor and speculation, it has now been confirmed that Gyllenhaal will reunite with The Covenant director Guy Ritchie for Road House 2, with Will Beall writing the script.

As per a report by Deadline, plot details for Road House 2 are currently being kept under wraps, with Ritchie taking over the reins for the action franchise from the first outing’s Doug Liman following the latter’s frustration with Amazon skipping theaters and debuting the movie on their streaming platform Prime Video. It is not yet known whether the sequel will do the same or hit the big screen.

Released last year and directed by Doug Liman from a screenplay written by Anthony Bagarozzi (The Nice Guys) and...

“Spring Tide” Season 2 TV series review
Image
Kjell Bergqvist as Tom Stilton and Dar Salim as Abbas, in the Swedish crime drama series “Spring Tide” Season 2. Directors: Niklas Ohlson, Pontus Klänge. Photo credit: Niklas Maupoix. Produced by Filmlance International Ab. Courtesy of MHz Choice

The Swedish crime drama,”Spring Tide” (originally “Springfloden”) is back with Season 2. I reviewed Season One of the series a couple of months ago (here is the link to that review: https://www.wearemoviegeeks.com/2025/02/spring-tide-season-one-tv-series-review/). Season Two brings back most of those principals for another 10-episode mystery.

Season Two is somewhat larger in scope, covering several crimes in two countries for its geographically scattered cast. It starts in Stockholm with the staged suicide of a possible corporate whistle-blower (Not a spoiler. It wouldn’t have been much of a series if the guy had actually killed himself. The series was a major hit and season 2 is now on the way, but it was also confirmed that Taylor Kitsch's Ben Edwards would also be getting his very own prequel called The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, chronicling his journey from Seal to CIA operative.

Prime Video now shares a new post on X, formerly Twitter, confirming that The Terminal List: Dark Wolf will release on the streaming service in summer 2025. Screw Romance, This Nordic Noir Thriller on Netflix Turns Love Into a Dark and Deadly Game
Image
There is no denying that love can make people do wild things, but Loving Adults takes it to a whole other level. The Nordic thriller goes all the way as it asks audiences what happens when love stews into something dark, calculating, and dangerously obsessive. The answer? Nothing good. At the center of the narrative are Christian (Dar Salim) and Leonora (Sonja Richter), a couple with their marriage on the rocks. Involved in an affair, Christian plans to leave his wife for his mistress, but he’s dead wrong in every sense of the word if he thinks she’ll go down without a fight. The back and forth that ensues isn’t just toxic; it’s unreal, and making it even more puzzling is the fact that no one spouse is the clear villain.

In the suspenseful crime drama , “Spring Tide (Springfloden): Season One”, Olivia is a student at the Swedish police academy is assigned to examine a cold case from 1990 to explore what technological advances might have produced a conviction had it occurred today. Coincidentally, the case is a particularly brutal murder of a young woman that her late father had worked on, forever after haunted by his inability to nail the killer(s). Another plot thread arises as a couple of young punks randomly attack homeless people, recording and posting their vicious beatings to titillate seekers of sadistic thrills.

In the early episodes we meet a slew of seemingly unrelated characters – so many that it requires extra concentration to keep up with the players and subplots while wondering how important any will become. One of the leads...

Eight Riveting and Authentic Military Movies to Commemorate Veterans Day
Kyle Schmid, Sebastian Stan, Steven Strait, and Taylor Kitsch in Le pacte du sang (2006)
On this special day, we are more grateful than ever for the sacrifices made by those who have served in the armed forces. Why does Veterans Day always fall on the 11th of November, you might ask? A day when everyone from all walks of life can unite to pay our respects to veterans from all wars has its origins dating back to World War I. At 11:00a.m. Paris local time on the 11th of November, 1918, the Armistice of Compiègne was signed to officially end WWI.

This Veterans Day, we are recognizing the importance of Veterans as storytellers. To celebrate, with the support of an anonymous generous donor, Film Independent is inviting 100 U.S. Military Veteran (working or aspiring) filmmakers or actors in the entertainment industry to receive a Film Independent Membership, for a contribution of just $1.00! If you are a U.S. Military Veteran and would like to become a Member,...

Veterans Day Movie Guide: Where to Stream ‘Saving Private Ryan,’ ‘Flags of Our Fathers’ and More
Image
Veterans Day is a federal holiday that honors the men and women who served.

Countless films have been made about their bravery, heroism and sacrifice.

Here are seven films to stream on Veterans Day this year:

“Saving Private Ryan”

Steven Spielberg’s ode to World War II veterans won five Oscars including Best Director for Spielberg — his second — while famously missing out on Best Picture to “Shakespeare in Love.” It is a visceral, emotional story of a group of soldiers, led by Tom Hanks, who are tasked with finding a private after the invasion of Normandy and bringing him home. Through their journey, Spielberg showcases the perspectives of everyone touched by the war, and the many different kinds of soldiers who fought for their country.

“Saving Private Ryan” is streaming on Paramount+ and Fubo.

“1917” (2019)

Sam Mendes directs this harrowing tale of survival. When the British army receives vital intel about German battle plans,...

Black Crab Shouldn't Be Netflixs Most Watched International Thriller
Image
Netflix is one of the titans of the streaming world, so it's no surprise that they generally release over 100 original movies each year. With that many titles to their name, not all of them are going to be hits, and sometimes the ones that are hits don't seem to make sense. Many titles get released to little fanfare and go on to be forgotten soon after, while a few catch audiences' attention and get picked up into the top 10. Sometimes it can be hard to understand why certain movies are picked up by the algorithm, or why they become so popular with viewers, as is the case with Black Crab.

The Gentlemen has been renewed for a second season over at Netflix
Image
Get ready for another go-around with the Guy Ritchie series, The Gentlemen. Variety has reported that the Netflix series has been renewed for season 2. In his review for season one, our own Alex Maidy said, “The Gentlemen series feels like a reimagining of the film. The story hits some vaguely similar notes but the vast majority is completely different. […] This is a unique reimagining of a successful story that takes it in a different direction and sets up future seasons.”

Netflix U.K.’s VP spoke ecstatically about the show’s successful first season, “With its gun-toting chickens and drug-dealing Dukes, The Gentlemen was a huge hit with audiences in 2024. Not really a surprise as Guy Ritchie remains one of the industry’s most iconic creators telling authentically British stories with his signature swagger, grit and wit. We are thrilled the series will be returning to Netflix for a second season,...

Is Guy Ritchie's The Covenant Based on a True Story?
Image
Quick Links What Is Guy Ritchie's The Covenant About? Is Guy Ritchie's The Covenant Adapted From a True Story? Was Jake Gyllenhaal's Character Based on a Real Person? Was Dar Salim's Character Based on a Real Person? Why Did Guy Ritchie Tell a Fictional Story Instead of a True One? Guy Ritchie's The Covenant highlights both ends of the spectrum between American soldiers and their interpreters in Afghanistan: betrayal and brotherhood. Despite its subject matter being ripped from the headlines, Guy Ritchie's The Covenant was not based on a true story but was instead inspired by the experiences of soldiers and interpreters. Telling a story based on reality but not actual events allowed Guy Ritchie to capture the profound bonds forged during battle more clearly.

The bonds between fellow soldiers can seldom be broken, and that's the message at the heart of Guy Ritchie's The Covenant. The...

Jake Gyllenhaal Gives Road House 2 A Perfect Replacement If Doug Liman Doesn't Return
Image
Jake Gyllenhaal is set to return for Road House 2, but director Doug Liman's involvement is uncertain due to past issues with streaming release. Guy Ritchie could be the ideal replacement director for Road House 2, given his comedic action style and previous work with Gyllenhaal. However, Ritchie's busy schedule with other projects like "In The Grey" and "Young Sherlock" may hinder his ability to take on Road House 2.

Road House 2 might not happen with original director Doug Liman, but a perfect replacement is clear thanks to Jake Gyllenhaal. Liman and Gyllenhaal worked together to make 2024's Road House reboot, which became a streaming sensation for Prime Video. It came as no surprise then when reports surfaced that Road House 2 was in development, with Jake Gyllenhaal set to return as Dalton. The sequel could not happen without the lead character and star coming back, but, unfortunately,...

The True Story Behind Guy Ritchie's The Covenant, Explained
Image
The Covenant by Guy Ritchie highlights the sacrifices of Afghan interpreters and sheds light on a real-life issue. The movie emphasizes the betrayal faced by interpreters who were promised visas for helping the U.S. military. Through a gripping narrative, Ritchie showcases the bond formed between soldiers and interpreters in times of war.

Released to critical acclaim on April 21, 2023, Guy Ritchie's The Covenant is loosely based on the collective exploitation of many Middle Eastern interpreters working with the U.S. Armed Forces during the War in Afghanistan. Rather than adapting one soldier's personal experience, the movie explores the sacrifices and consequences made by many unnamed interpreters who risked their lives for the promise of a better future.

To make its salient point and raise awareness of the real-life issue that persists today, the story follows John Kinley (played by Jake Gyllenhaal), a U.S. Green Beret serving in the War...
