The spinoff concept is as old as television itself, but its origins were humble.
Spinoffs began as creative experiments, allowing networks to capitalize on popular characters and extend the success of a hit show.
The idea was simple: take a beloved character, place them in a new setting, and hope the magic of the original show followed.
(Ollie Upton/HBO)
One of the first examples of this was The Andy Griffith Show (1960), a spinoff of The Danny Thomas Show.
Audiences quickly fell in love with Sheriff Andy Taylor’s small-town wisdom and charm, and the show became a hit in its own right.
Its success even spawned its own spinoffs, like Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., which followed the lovable but bumbling Gomer as he joined the Marines.
These early spinoffs were often straightforward, focusing on quirky characters and simple premises.

While the evil child is a staple of the horror and thriller genres, there's usually an outside force swaying their behavior. They're possessed by a demon, from outer space, or actually a grown woman who only looks like a child. The danger comes from something that either puts the child in as much trouble or portends the idea that they're not really children at all. Having a villain be a child who is just bad on their own is an uncommon idea, but it's not a new one. In fact, the earliest example of the trope is the 1956 film The Bad Seed, where the seed in question, Rhoda, is a little monster seemingly for no reason. Other films that tackle the same subject, such as The Lodge and We Need To Talk About Kevin, are dreary and deeply confronting pieces, offering no real answers as to the origin or solution...

What’s it like to be the spine-chilling child in a scary film? In a Halloween special, we speak to the girl who played a demonic telepath in Village of the Damned – and the star of homicidal-virus shocker The Children
When Danielle Keaton was seven, her homework was to open her eyes as wide as possible and stare. She had just secured a role in director John Carpenter’s Village of the Damned – a horror film about inhuman psychic children with violent tendencies – and had to perfect her creepy glare. “We had to practise not blinking for a very long time,” says the actor and coach, now 38 and based in LA. “We would have to look in a mirror and hold the stare without laughing.” On set, the children would have staring contests with Superman star Christopher Reeve.

Horror movie villains come in all forms, but there's something to be said about some of the genre's best female antagonists. Historically, horror films often relegated women to stereotypical roles as damsels in distress or disposable victims devoid of autonomy and rationality. While suspense movies occasionally featured female villains, it's only recently that horror has begun to present women as antagonists on equal footing with their male counterparts. The most chilling female antagonists defy stereotypes and challenge traditional perceptions of women, girlhood, and femininity by weaponizing them to unsettle viewers through blood-soaked rampages.
These characters exploit outdated assumptions about women being underestimated or dismissed as threats, cleverly using these perceptions to catch both their victims and audiences off-guard. With ruthless precision, they orchestrate events and execute their twisted visions without hesitation, whether through violent slayings or masterful manipulation. In doing so, they command respect and evoke fear typically reserved for male characters.

As has been the case in previous years, once again the short films of the London Film Festival continue to demonstrate the eclecticism of the festival programmers’ tastes. Despite being the UK’s largest film festival, the team behind this 68th edition of Lff aren’t afraid to have shorts from filmmakers of various backgrounds sitting next to each other. Watching through the programmes on offer, you’ll see student filmmakers next to established directors, horror shorts sitting alongside intimate documentaries, high budgets next to low budgets. It’s just a wonderful mix of films that are clearly put together without any sort of prejudice or preconceived assumptions. Below you’ll find a list of ten short films from the festival this year that we deemed recommendation-worthy but bear in mind the programme is very much worth your time across the board. So, once you’ve finished with this list,...

We have a while to wait before we get to see new episodes of House of the Dragon, HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series, but the cast members are keeping busy in the meantime. At the moment, Emma D'Arcy (Rhaenyra Targaryen) is starring in a Greek myth-inspired drama called The Other Place at the National Theatre in London. D'Arcy is incredibly compelling onscreen and I can easily imagine them commanding the stage as well.
That said, the National Theater is an ocean away from where I live, so I doubt I'll be taking it in. But D'Arcy's House of the Dragon castmates live much closer. In a video on X, we can see House of the Dragon stars Harry Collett (who plays Rhaenyra's son Jace) and Ewan Mitchell (who plays her younger half-brother Aemond) showing up to watch their colleague work:

Once upon a time, there was a sitcom called "Rhoda." It was a spinoff of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," and was an instant smash. How instant? Early in the first season, Rhoda got married, and the episode was watched by over 52 million television viewers. It was the highest-rated episode of television in the 1970s until the premiere of "Roots" in 1977, and served as a bit of a sitcom laboratory for James L. Brooks and Allan Burns. "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" was groundbreaking in its own right, but, at least early in the series, Brooks and his writers were a little looser on "Rhoda."
One of their most brilliant ideas was to introduce a regular character who is heard but never seen. "The Andy Griffith Show" had done this on occasion with Barney Fife's beloved Juanita Beasley, but "Rhoda" turned the alcoholic Carlton the Doorman into something of a sensation.

If the 1950s and '60s were the golden age of the television sitcom, the 1970s were its in-the-pocket prime. And when risk-averse TV execs saw the astronomical ratings of hit sitcoms like "All in the Family," "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," and "M*A*S*H," they exploited this ratings-rich phenomenon by diving into the same-but-different world of spinoffs.
Norman Lear's "All in the Family" was the '70s spinoff king with seven total offshoots, but James L. Brooks and Allan Burns' "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" proved plenty durable by spawning "Rhoda," "Phyllis," and "Lou Grant." Of these, "Rhoda" was by far the biggest hit. Valerie Harper's four seasons as Mary Richards' lovably vivacious neighbor more than confirmed she could carry a series of her own. So, Brooks and Allan sent Rhoda back to her hometown of New York City, where she immediately found love (her...

Emmy award-winning actress Julie Kavner became a household name as the titular "Rhoda" in the very first spin-off of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." She's enjoyed a life of comedic and character acting for decades (she's Adam Sandler's mom in "Click!"), but the general public probably knows her best as TV's longest-running sitcom mom — Marge Simpson. Kavner also voices the other major women in the Bouvier family. Still, her trademark raspy voice has helped make Marge an icon. She received her second Emmy in 1992 for voicing the character and an Annie Award nomination for her performance in "The Simpsons Movie."
Marge has been at the center of some of the all-time great episodes of "The Simpsons," and in recent years she's become a bit of a meme queen in her own right. Marge loves her family, takes pride in her home, is a devoutly religious woman, and is the...

If there had never been “The Tracey Ullman Show,” there likely would never have been “The Simpsons.” Too, without “Happy Days,” then “Laverne and Shirley” and “Mork and Mindy” would never have seen the light of primetime. Television series spinoffs have been a thing going back to some the earliest days of the medium itself, when “The Honeymooners” premiered in 1955 after beginning life as a series of sketches on “The Jackie Gleason Show” a few years earlier. Thus was born the concept of introducing a character or characters on a show that prove so popular it’s decided they deserve their own series.

Abigail is a unique reimagining of Dracula's Daughter, featuring a blood-soaked storyline and a 14-year-old intimidating protagonist. Classic creepy kid films like The Bad Seed and The Omen set the stage for Abigail's success in the horror subgenre. Abigail's critical and audience acclaim proves that the creepy kid subgenre still has a strong audience.
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett gave horror a modern classic with Ready or Not, which, like their newest feature, Abigail, is both unique and wears its inspirations on its sleeves. That said, their two Scream films are, of course, even more evident about referencing the past. But, whereas Scream has always made a point of emulating multiple past horror films, Abigail is effectively a reimagining of just one: Dracula's Daughter.
However, Abigail is quite different from Dracula's Daughter in at least two major ways. For one, Abigail is about as blood-soaked as a vampire flick has ever been.

When a sitcom reaches a certain level of longevity, it can be easy for writers to take their audience for granted. Storylines get lightly reworked, if not recycled wholesale. Cheap ratings are scored by having a significant character get married (call it the "Rhoda boost"). And there's no better way to guarantee the maximum amount of eyeballs than to have a major celebrity play themselves within the world of our favorite characters.
This typically works. Who can forget the time Bobby Brady faked a serious illness to earn a bedside visit from Joe Namath on "The Brady Bunch," or the time that pint-sized prankster Arnold Jackson pulled the same trick to get Muhammad Ali up to the Drummond's penthouse on "Diff'rent Strokes?" These are memorable episodes to be sure, but there's nothing more to them than the cameo.

Mrs. Wolowitz's absence from The Big Bang Theory was a deliberate choice by the writers, paying homage to famous sitcom characters who were known for their voices but never their image. The decision to keep Mrs. Wolowitz off-screen was also influenced by a character from the show Rhoda, Carlton the Doorman, who was always heard but never seen. The character of Mrs. Wolowitz was written off the show following the death of actress Carol Ann Susi, who portrayed her. This was done as a tribute to both the character and the actress.
One of the longest-running gags on The Big Bang Theory was that the writers never showed Howard's mom, Mrs. Wolowitz (Carol Ann Susi) — and while it's a fun recurring joke, their reasoning behind it is surprisingly deep. Mrs. Wolowitz was the stereotypical overbearing mother who didn't want her son to advance in his life for fear of losing him.

Sudden success is a hell of a drug. Be it entertainment, sports, or certain, shockingly competitive sectors of the healthcare industry, you can count on numerous fast risers to get high on their own supply and take an ego-fueled torch to their career.
Television actors are especially susceptible to these vain slip-ups, and it's easy to understand why. Before the advent of prestige TV, the small-screen medium was, particularly for young-ish performers, viewed as a potential springboard to big-screen stardom. Sometimes it works out. Chevy Chase bolted from "Saturday Night Live" midway through its second season and instantly became a movie star on the strength of his work in Colin Higgins' sporadically hilarious "Foul Play" (even though he's far from the funniest element of the film). And sometimes you're David Caruso, who quit "NYPD Blue" to topline a pair of 1995 flops in Barbet Schroder's "Kiss of Death" (underrated) and William Friedkin's "Jade".

Throughout the seven seasons of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," the android Data (Brent Spiner) often struggled with his inability to connect with his crewmates. Unlike Data, his organic peers were all emotional beings who could laugh, get angry, and intuit friendly interactions via their feelings and social acumen. Data had no emotions, at least not demonstrably, and had to rely on analysis and study to understand humans. Data longed to be human and often asked his friends to explain their baffling idiosyncrasies. Data's emotionlessness was not a flaw, but a design choice by his creator.
Later in the series, Data secured an emotion chip built specially for him by his presumed-dead creator. By the early 1990s, it was still fairly rare to see a Hollywood production invade New England to shoot a film. Things had certainly been made here: Ever heard of Jaws? It was shot entirely on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. And I made a documentary about another one: Stephen King’s Pet Sematary, which was shot entirely in Maine in 1988. In fact, much of my documentary film work has focused on stories native to New England. But, still, we didn’t see the kind of movie activity and buzz that we see nowadays. Despite its natural beauty of mountains, rocky coastlines, and beautiful beaches, New England can be difficult (and expensive) to navigate for a film crew. What’s more, during certain months of the year our weather can be unpredictable and harsh. We’re known for our Nor’easters and blizzards and even the occasional hurricane in the autumn months.

It's not every day that a genuine legend of the industry leaves us after a long and fulfilled life that was lived to the absolute fullest. It's rarer still for one to live past the age of 100 without looking back and having a single regret. Norman Lear, the producing titan who defined the very concept of sitcoms as we've come to know it, sadly passed away this week after leaving his mark on an entire medium of storytelling. Along the way, the famed producer and Emmy-winner (six times over!) managed to put his stamp in Hollywood history throughout the decades ... but that's not to say that everything ultimately went according to plan.
When he was just about to turn 99, the late, great Lear was once asked in an interview with Entertainment Weekly back in 2021 whether he had any regrets about his lengthy and trailblazing career. More to the point, would...

Things are coming to a head at York Memorial Hospital's emergency department.
There were too many over-stressed staffers on Transplant Season 3 Episode 6.
In some cases, they suffered from the effects of Dr. Devi's patient-centric approach, of an institution implementing changes without the required resources.
Others were bringing their problems into the Ed, affecting their performance.
Neeta means well with her patient-friendly policies, and she was allowed to prove that her academic concept could work in the real world.
More of the blame should rest on the hospital's administrators, who hired her to do the impossible.
A certain amount of wait time for treatment is integral to Canada's public healthcare system.
York's cynical administrators figured that a more content patient would be less likely to sue in the event of a problematic result.
Now, all Devi has to do is to install her system only by reallocating existing resources.

Since 1991 (and primarily within the last 10 years), a total of six TV performers have earned recognition from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for reprising roles that had brought them Golden Globe nominations at least a decade earlier. With this and his own stellar HFPA track record in mind, Kelsey Grammer – the two-time Best TV Comedy Actor-winning star of “Frasier” – can more than reasonably be expected to join said prestigious club by scoring his ninth bid in the category (and first in 22 years) for the Paramount Plus revival of his beloved NBC sitcom. What’s more, he might actually make history as the first actor involved in such a situation to pull off a comeback victory.
Grammer collected his first eight Golden Globe nominations for “Frasier” between 1994 and 2002 and emerged triumphant in both 1996 and 2001. After saying goodbye to Dr. Frasier Crane 19 years ago, he is now set to lead a long-awaited...

“Allow me to introduce myself,” spoke a sarcastic voice from the couch during the second episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. “I’m another person in the room.” Her name was Rhoda Faye Morgenstern (Valerie Harper), and for a time she was a window dresser and Mary Richards’ (Mary Tyler Moore) upstairs neighbor in Minneapolis. In this instance, she’s learned that the man she’s asked out on a date, the one she met when she accidentally ran him over with her car, is in fact married and he’s brought his wife along for the evening. It’s the kind of thing that Rhoda would insist would only happen to someone like her and never someone like Mary.

Sean Avery is still under a restraining order. Earlier this month, a court ruled that Hilary Rhoda‘s temporary restraining order against her 43-year-old husband will remain in effect, Et confirms.
Rhoda, 36, filed for divorce from Avery, a former NHL player, in July 2022. The model’s temporary restraining order against Avery, which prevents the Oppenheimer actor from coming in contact with her and their nearly 3-year-old son, Nash, was first granted last October.
It will now remain in effect until the next hearing in their court case, which is scheduled for Sept. 11.
Et has reached out to Avery and Rhoda’s lawyers for comment.
In the 2022 court docs, which were obtained by Et, Rhoda accused her husband, whom she wed in 2015, of both domestic and child abuse.
Rhoda began by detailing an alleged September 2022 incident when Avery was arrested for domestic battery. She alleges that Avery “entered my house (even...
