Mark Penney is a Canadian experimental filmmaker, actor, entrepreneur, businessman, writer, musician, composer, and artist. Born in Toronto and raised in an ethnically diverse, low-income area of Brampton, Ontario, Mark began his career in Christian television at the age of 16 before working as a camera assistant on numerous commercials and Hollywood productions. In 2003, he started directing feature films, beginning with The Right Way (2004), which screened at several international film festivals and received a limited theatrical and video-on-demand release in the United States. He followed this with the experimental abstract feature Life (2007) and the 2013 Canadian love story The Beautiful Risk, which was well-received at festivals and became a hit on DVD and video-on-demand platforms. His experimental drama Calla Lily (2016) achieved success in Germany and Eastern Europe, reaching the top 10 in digital sales charts. In 2017, Mark explored 360-degree video with the feature Job, and in 2019, he released two experimental futurist films, Decline and Death. He continued to explore global themes through documentaries and experimental films such as Dark Winter and Doctor Faustus. With his animated satirical comedy Fred Rooster, Mark continues to push boundaries in the medium.
