Beyond the Reach of Time: Oasis’s Debut Album ‘Definitely Maybe’ at 30
Image
The body of work that Oasis amassed between 1994 and 1996—including Definitely Maybe and (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?, and at least another album’s worth of essential b-sides—has sustained their reputation through the 15 years that have elapsed since Liam and Noel Gallagher parted ways professionally. The band’s first two studio albums are remarkable not only for the quality of the material contained within, but also for the differences between them in terms of content and presentation. While the songs on Morning Glory resulted in copious airplay, Definitely Maybe has enabled Oasis to retain some alt-rock credibility.

This sense of indie authenticity is, in part, the result of the conditions under which Definitely Maybe was made. The story, of a group of twentysomething outsiders drawn to making music in the hope of escaping a life of limited means, is familiar. According to a recent interview with Noel, all...

Andy Rourke Dies: The Smiths Bassist Was 59
Image
Andy Rourke, who played bass for The Smiths on all four of the English band’s albums, died today of pancreatic cancer at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. He was 59.

Tributes from the music world poured in following the announcement of Rourke’s death, which was made by his friend and Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr this morning.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Andy Rourke after a lengthy illness with pancreatic cancer,” tweeted Marr. “Andy will be remembered as a kind and beautiful soul by those who knew him and as a supremely gifted musician by music fans. We request privacy at this sad time.”

Marr followed up with an image of himself and Rourke from The Smiths’ days.

Morrissey Honors Late Andy Rourke: “He Will Never Die as Long as His Music Is Heard”
Image
Morrissey has paid tribute to his late Smiths bandmate Andy Rourke, who recently passed away at the age of 59 following a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer.

“Sometimes one of the most radical things you can do is to speak clearly,” Morrissey wrote on his website. “I just hope … wherever Andy has gone … that he’s Ok. He will never die as long as his music is heard. He didn’t ever know his own power, and nothing that he played had been played by someone else.”

The former Smiths vocalist continued, “His distinction was so terrific and unconventional and he proved it could be done. He was also very, very funny and very happy, and post-Smiths, he kept a steady identity — never any manufactured moves. I suppose, at the end of it all, we hope to feel that we were valued. Andy need not worry about that.”

Rourke’s death was announced on Friday,...

Andy Rourke, The Smiths’ Bassist, Dead at 59
Image
Andy Rourke, bassist of The Smiths, has died at the age of 59 following a battle with cancer.

Rourke’s death was announced by his longtime friend and former bandmate, Johnny Marr. “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Andy Rourke after a lengthy illness with pancreatic cancer,” Marr wrote. “Andy will be remembered as a kind and beautiful soul by those who knew him and as a supremely gifted musician by music fans. We request privacy at this sad time.”

Rourke first met Marr at the age of 11 while living in Manchester. As teenagers, they frequently played music together and formed several bands, with Rourke eventually picking up the bass guitar. In 1982, after Marr and Morrissey formed their own band together, they invited Rourke to come aboard as bassist. The group, which was rounded out by drummer Mike Joyce, became known as The Smiths.

The Snuts: ‘I’ve got friends who are gonna have their gas cut off, no money in the bank...’
Image
The Queen is dead. King Charles has acceded to the throne. Liz Truss has resigned as prime minister. And The Snuts have a new album called Burn the Empire. Of course, the Scottish four-piece didn’t know its release date would fall somewhere between these disruptive historical events. But, at an uncertain, unstable moment for the nation, the album’s themes of frustration, fury and good old-fashioned rage against the system are about as timely as it gets.

“It felt pretty cathartic to go into the studio and start screaming all this stuff,” frontman Jack Cochrane says with a grin. We’re speaking over video call, on the same day the band are forced to cancel shows in Paris and Antwerp over Brexit-related red tape. So, as you can imagine, he’s pretty fired up. “Everybody’s super frustrated, it’s like there’s this societal breakdown,” the 26-year-old says.

Julian Lennon has released a new climate emergency-themed single in partnership with forest conservation marketing organisation Everland.

The single, titled “Change”, was commissioned by the company to raise awareness for the immediate need to act for the climate.

In the song, the Grammy-nominated son of John Lennon sings: “So gather up our courage for the road lies ahead / if we don’t do this together, we’ll surely end up dead”

He continues: “And we’ll put the past behind us, clean the air and clean the sea / feed the world with human kindness / love will set us free.”

The chorus then comes in: “We’re going to change the world together, you and I and everyone forever.”

The song aligns with the work of Lennon’s nonprofit, The White Feather Foundation, which aims to support conservation and Indigenous cultures.

‘Haters hate and lovers love!’: Ian Brown responds to criticism of his performance on solo tour

Ian Brown has responded to criticism of his performance after opening his UK and Ireland tour without a band.

Fans of The Stone Roses frontman reportedly walked out of his show in Leeds on Sunday (25 September) after the singer performed to backing tracks.

Many fans at the O2 Academy in Leeds were disappointed with the performance, calling it “bad” and comparing it to “karaoke”.

“Gutted to see @ianbrown turn up to his £40 a ticket, sold out gig at Leeds tonight With No Band,” wrote attendee Steve Lathum on Twitter, alongside a video from the gig.

“I’m a life-long fan but it was bad. Ian Brown does karaoke and butchers his own tunes. Most were too pissed to care but I had to get out after this one. Longsight M13 was a highlight,” he continued.

“£40 to see a karaoke act,” another complained, while one called it the “funniest gig” they’d ever been to.

Roger Waters asks Vladimir Putin to ‘stop playing nuclear chicken’ in open letter
Roger Waters at an event for Bernard and Doris (2006)
Roger Waters has written an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, asking him to end the Ukraine war.

“Would you (Putin) like to see an end to this war?” the 79-year-old musician wrote in a letter on Sunday (25 August). “If you were to reply and say, ‘Yes please.’ That would immediately make things a lot easier.

“If you were to come out and say, ‘Also the Russian Federation has no further territorial interest beyond the security of the Russian-speaking populations of The Crimea, Donetsk, and Lubansk [sic].’ That would help too.”

The Pink Floyd co-founder, who recently announced his farewell tour, urged the Russian president to issue a message of assurance to the western areas of Ukraine and Europe, as he “[has] kids and grandkids, and so do most of my brothers and sisters all over the world and none of us would relish that outcome”.

“If I’ve read your previous speeches correctly,...

Metallica will perform a special tribute concert to honour the couple that first signed them this autumn.

Jonny and Marsha Zazula first signed Metallica to their label Megaforce Records back in 1983.

The band put out their 1983 debut Kill ‘Em All and 1984’s, Ride The Lightning under the couple’s label before signing to a major. Now, this concert will honour the pair, who both sadly died in the space of the last two years.

During their time under the label, Metallica embarked on their first major tour supporting British band Raven.

“This night will be extra-special as we’ll be celebrating the life, legacy, and achievements of Jonny and Marsha Zazula,” the band said in a statement.

“Jonny gave us our first break in New York, released our first albums on his Megaforce Records label, and put us out on the road for our first real tour.

Britney Spears compares herself to Jennifer Lopez in Instagram post about being ‘drugged with lithium’
Britney Spears
Britney Spears has shared a post contrasting herself with Jennifer Lopez, criticising the way she was medicated while under her now-defunct conservatorship.

Between the years 2008 and 2021, Spears’ personal and financial affairs were controlled by a conservatorship agreement, with her father Jamie Spears serving as her conservator for the majority of that time.

Writing on Instagram early on Monday (26 September), Spears suggested that an artist like Lopez would not have been subjected to the same treatment she had.

“I’d like to see somebody tell Jennifer Lopez to sit down eight hours a day seven days a week... no car. I’d like to see a management team tell Jennifer Lopez to go through what I went through... what the f*** do you think she would do ... her family would Never allow that,” she wrote.

“After 14 years of telling me ‘no’ to what I wanted... it’s ruined for me... but...

Ed Sheeran has pledged his support for the Music Venue Trust’s (Mvt) Own Our Venues initiative.

Own Our Venues is a long term campaign which launched in June. It aims to intervene to help take ownership on some of the UK’s Grassroot venues.

The plan hopes to take control of the freeholds of these venues across the country and put them under a protected status of benevolent ownership.

“Own Our Venues is an initiative I’m really passionate about getting behind,” Sheeran said of the scheme, which hopes to raise an initial £3.5m by the end of 2022.

“Small, independent venues are so, so important to the music community, and I’ve played some of my favourite gigs of my career in these rooms.

“We’ve got to do all we can to protect these beautiful venues that we’ve all come to love for years to come.”

Queuegate petition creator says it’s ‘kind of destroying me’ amid Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield row
Image
The creator of a widely shared petition calling for ITV to “axe” This Morning presenters Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield has shared an update.

Schofield and Willoughby prompted a substantial public backlash when Queen Elizabeth II was lying in state, after they were given a separate access line for media.

ITV viewers complained that the pair had “skipped” the queue to see the queen’s coffin. The queue led to people waiting for up to 14 hours to get in.

At the time of writing, nearly 75,000 people have signed the petition calling for Willoughby and Schofield to be taken off air.

The petition’s creator shared an update on the original Change.org post.

“I’ve asked ITV to deliver any responses relating to this to the public and not to me, as I won’t be following the news, or watching the programme, or sharing anything online, or through social media,...

Exploring the music of Edgar Wright's Cornetto trilogy
Mark Harrison Jul 3, 2017

Music is a vital part of Shaun Of The Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World's End. We take a look in more detail right here...

This feature contains major spoilers for Shaun Of The Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World's End.

Edgar Wright's films are often likened to musicals, with his precise use of editing and shot choices giving us some of the most stylish comedy films of the century. His latest, Baby Driver, isn't a comedy per se, but “a musical with car chases”, or “An American In Paris on wheels and crack smoke”, as an elated Guillermo del Toro described it on Twitter.

Centring around Ansel Elgort's Baby, a getaway driver who does his best work while listening to a personal soundtrack, it seems like the film Wright was born to make. He had the idea for the film after making his first feature,...

‘Teachers’: Why Six Bold Women Named Katie Aren’t Afraid to Get Ugly for Great Comedy
Adrian Bower, Raquel Cassidy, Andrew Lincoln, and Nina Sosanya in Teachers (2001)
If you’re wondering what the future of women in comedy might look like, consider Caitlin Barlow’s armpits. “We’re painting my armpit hair on for this episode,” she said to IndieWire. “I grew it out for a week, but it wasn’t dark enough.”

That’s just one example of the sort of creative choice made regularly in the course of making “Teachers,” the bold, profane and hilarious comedy created by sketch comedy group the Katydids and executive produced by Ian Roberts and Jay Martel (“Key and Peele”). Having just wrapped the first half of its second season, the TV Land series features Katydids members Barlow, Katy Colloton, Cate Freedman, Kate Lambert, Katie O’Brien and Kathryn Renee Thomas as an eclectic group of educators who work at an elementary school, doing their best not to warp young minds with their outrageous behavior.

[Review] Oasis: Supersonic
Oliver Stone. That’s the filmmaker who should have been asked to chronicle the career of Oasis, the hugely successful, ever-combustible, now-departed kings of Britpop. Looking at the entirety of the band’s lifespan — from the early 1990s to break-up in 2008 — it’s hard not to notice the trademarks of Doors-era Stone: controversies, fisticuffs, conspiracies, bravery, insanity, ego, vulnerability, lust, and violence. In rock and roll, these are positives, and the joys that emanate from such feelings and behavior is certainly on display in Oasis: Supersonic, a Noel and Liam Gallagher-approved documentary. The band’s career, however, is not really the subject of the new documentary directed by Mat Whitecross and from the producers of Amy, Asif Kapadia’s Oscar-winning Amy Winehouse documentary. Instead, Supersonic is about the rise of the band, the period from birth to its two concerts (to 250,000 attendees) at Knebworth.

And that’s fine, since...

Quotes of the Week from Scorpion, Bull, Jane the Virgin & More!
With three time travel series currently on the air, they're trumped by horror shows, with American Horror Story, The Exorcist, Scream Queens, From Dusk Till Dawn, Scream and Ash vs. Evil Dead all making a showing this week.

The CW schedule filled up with returning favorites including Jane the Virgin and The Vampire Diaries (for its final season!), but it was quotes from Scorpion and Bull that really made an impact.

Read on and share your thoughts!

1. Scorpion Collins: The water doesn't lie still, but the water still lies. Add fifty and your answer will be revealed. 2. Bull Bull: Callisto isn't a who. Callisto is a where, geographically situated in west Texas, population 25,000, but in the legal world it's... 3. Jane the Virgin Jane: We talked about who would take out the trash and when we would have another baby, not what I should do if there was a bullet near.

The Man From Mo’Wax Review [Lff 2016]
The Man from Mo’Wax is a very strange music documentary. Most films of this ilk are glowing accounts of an individual or band’s inexorable rise to the top of the charts, demonstrating their musical virtuosity, inherent genius and the growing adoration of their fans. Here that curve is inverted, director Matthew Jones painstakingly dissecting a person with next to no discernible musical talent as his career crashes and burns.

That person is producer and DJ James Lavelle – hardly a household name – yet kind of an icon to dance music aficionados. His career spans three distinct periods: the first is that of a musically teenage wunderkind who sets up his own cooler than cool record label, Mo’Wax Records. The second is as creative leader of Unkle, where he collaborated with various musical legends to create a series of increasingly poorly received and badly selling albums. The third follows...

Slick Kill Your Friends Trailer Has Nicholas Hoult Indulge In Fame And Excess
Owen Harris’ directorial debut Kill Your Friends has premiered a new trailer today, taking you into the dark and twisted mind of Nicholas Hoult’s seedy A&R (artists and repertoire) man, Steven Stelfox.

Part American Pyscho, part Wolf of Wall Street, Stelfox’s general irreverence for the world around him is captured brilliantly in the latest sizzle reel, as Hoult’s businessman embarks on a power-mongering – and seemingly bloodthirsty – climb to the top of the British music scene of the mid-90s.

Thanks in large part to genre-defining hits from Blur, The Stone Roses, Oasis and the like, the industry was enjoying a historic high before the turn of the millennium, and those themes of fame and excess will underpin Hoult’s burning desire to continue his winning streak.

Lifted from John Niven’s novel of the same name, Kill Your Friends also stars James Corden, Tom Riley, Joseph Malwe,...

Kill Your Friends Trailer Showcases A British Music Industry At Its Prime
Crafting a compelling drama around the music industry has proven to be a difficult butterfly to pin for major studios – just ask Max Joesph and Zac Efron. But the underwhelming box office performance of We Are Your Friends has in no way dampened our interest in Owen Harris’ upcoming British drama, Kill Your Friends.

As the title suggests, this is a decidedly darker spin on the business, swapping out the glitz and glam of Hollywood for a British music industry at its prime. Buoyed by the genre-defining successes of bands such as Blur, The Stone Roses and Oasis, business was booming during the late 80s and early 90s, leading to an era of fame, fortune and gluttonous success.

Lifted from the pages of John Niven’s eponymous novel, Harris’ feature stars Mad Max: Fury Road alum Nicholas Hoult as A&R man (artists and repertoire) Steven Stelfox, who revels in...

Nicholas Hoult Eyes Fame And Fortune In First Trailer For Music Industry Drama Kill Your Friends
Max Joesph and Zac Efron may be tackling the glitz and glam of the Edm scene with We Are Your Friends later this month, but Secret Diary of a Call Girl and Black Mirror director Owen Harris is creating a decidedly darker take on the music industry and its sink-or-swim nature with his adaptation, Kill Your Friends.

Based on John Niven’s eponymous novel, the film charts the burgeoning status of the British music scene in the early ’90s – a time when Blur, The Stone Roses and Oasis all enjoyed remarkable success. Kill Your Friends orbits around Steven Stelfox’s (Nicholas Hoult) insatiable desire for fame and fortune, and today’s trailer merely hints at the measures he will go through to secure his place at the top of the proverbial food chain.

Harris’ interpretation of Niven’s jet-black source material looks to be as hysterical as it is satirical,...

4 Filmmakers That Survived the Sophomore Slump (Video)
Ian Brown at an event for The Class of '92 (2013)
The Sophomore Slump, in the entertainment world, usually refers to music. It's tossed at bands or artists that couldn't recapture the success of their debut album (think Weezer or The Stone Roses) with their follow-up. Fairly or not, the idea is the band had years to come up with material for the first salvo and then had nothing left. Or perhaps they swerved away from what made them successful in the first place. Or the expectations were too high. Or they choked. Regardless, it seems to happen a lot. It also happens to movie directors. Think Richard Kelly, who

X Factor first review: Cowell brings back sparkle, but not the talent
It's been four years since Simon Cowell was last on the X Factor panel in the UK. In his last series, he introduced the world to One Direction, the ratings were sky high and his show was the only thing people talked about on Monday morning at work.

He returns, after having his Us version of the show flop and dumped, to find that The X Factor is no longer the dominant force in British television.

BBC One's Strictly Come Dancing now reigns supreme in the ratings war and the tabloids and British public seem more interested in melting frozen Alaskas and Mary Berry's opinion on soggy bottoms than his reunion with Cheryl Fernandez-Versini behind the judges' desk.

Series 11 of The X Factor is the biggest challenge that Cowell has faced since he first controversially launched the show, spinning off his new found superstar status on Pop Idol.

The Stone Roses: Made of Stone

Film

A rollicking documentary focusing on the recent comeback of Madchester baggy indie pop legends The Stone Roses made by superfan Shane Meadows. What more could any music fan want? From the spine-tingling opening, which sees lead singer Ian Brown greeting front row fans at last summer’s monumental Heaton Park concerts, to the initial post-reconciliation jam session and snippets of subsequent world tour gigs, this is a hugely entertaining and surprisingly touching film.

True, some of the less appealing truths around the band’s break-up are skimmed over, but this is far from a hagiography, and is more an affectionate, heartfelt look at a four friends rediscovering their love for each other and the music which brought them together. Meadow’s personality is evident in every frame, and his own unabashed love for the foursome shines through.

Early 80’s...

The Stone Roses: Made of Stone (2013)
New Stone Roses LP in 2015? That's quick for them, says Shane Meadows
The Stone Roses: Made of Stone (2013)
Shane Meadows has joked that the release of a new Stone Roses album in 2015 would be quick for the band.

The Stone Roses released their last album Second Coming in 1994, five and a half years after their self-titled debut.

After splitting in 1996, the band reunited in 2011 and at the time promised a "live resurrection" with new material, though have only played old songs at their live shows and festival appearances so far.

During Meadows's documentary The Stone Roses: Made of Stone, the director got visibly excited about the 'New Song' on the running order for a band rehearsal for their Warrington Parr Hall comeback.

However, the band played no new songs during that performance, and no new material is heard on the film itself.

Asked if he heard any new music during the making of the film, Meadows told Digital Spy: "No, we didn't. The day I think we were...

Film Review: 'Made of Stone'
★★★☆☆ There's no denying that Shane Meadows' latest film, The Stone Roses: Made of Stone (2013) - which details the impact of the Manchester-based band - is going to divide opinion. Fans of the group, which broke through in the late eighties with tremendous success, will relish in the multitude of archive interviews and gig footage. Meadows' boyish glee and borderline obsession translates into palpable energy that thrusts you through the 90-minute doc. Early on in the film, Meadows recounts how he missed out on attending the now-famous Spike Island gig after dropping a tab of acid and giving his ticket away to a stranger.

From here on out, Made of Stone is less concerned with the finer biographical details of the band and more interested in Meadows making amends for his teenage error. Swiftly dropping the a-typical music documentary structure we actually receive relatively little information regarding the formation of the band.

'This Is England '90' will hopefully be the last, says Shane Meadows
Shane Meadows has said that he hopes This Is England '90 is his "full stop" on the series.

The director's 2006 movie This Is England spawned TV follow-ups This Is England '86 in 2010 and This Is England '88 in 2011, but work on the 1990 catch-up was halted while Meadows made his documentary The Stone Roses: Made of Stone.

> Shane Meadows on 'Made of Stone': 'The Stone Roses were just like us'

Asked if This Is England '90 would be his last part of the story, Meadows told Digital Spy: "Yeah, hopefully. I say hopefully because I don't want to end up ruining it, but I love the cast."

Producer Mark Herbert joked: "We should do This Is England '70, when they're at school!"

Meadows added: "This Is England the musical? Who knows!

"It's really hard to put down when you have so much fun doing something, so I hope I don't...

The Stone Roses: Made of Stone Review – Entertaining If Broad Musical Tribute
Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

British auteur Shane Meadows was invited by The Stone Roses themselves to capture the lead-up to their summer return tour last year, and the director, clearly a huge fan, is evidently starstruck from the first minute he meets them. This is a double-edged sword of sorts in this reverent yet somewhat hagiographic doc, which captures the fans in all of their passionate obsessiveness, the band in some of their blunt honesty, yet not really a whole lot else.

There’s no doubting that the band’s return after a 15-year separation period was big news for the British music industry, and Meadows’ film does a palpable job of capturing the excitement of a legion of fans who assumed they’d never get to see the quartet on-stage together again. One particularly startling portion of the film, shot almost entirely in verite-style, monochromatic handheld as fans desperately...

The Stone Roses: Made of Stone Review
There is simply no better way to spend 49 minutes of your time, than to sit down and listen to the eponymous début album by The Stone Roses, as a record that is one of the finest to have ever been recorded. Well now, though double the length in time, the immensely talented director Shane Meadows has made a worthy attempt at presenting a film equally as inspiring, with his documentary Made of Stone. The soundtrack is alright, too.

Having taken the world by storm when bursting onto the scene in 1989, Ian Brown, John Squire, Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield and Alan ‘Reni’ Wren became one of the most influential bands to have existed, with a strong cult-like following amongst their ardent fans. However when the band broke up in 1996, it appeared that they would never reform, with telling signs coming from Squire and his now infamous quote “I have no desire whatsoever...

Shane Meadows: 'This is the closest thing to a love letter I've ever made'
Shane Meadows talks about his Stone Roses documentary Made of Stone – and what it was like to work with his heroes

To outsiders, love always seems like madness. In 2011, when the Stone Roses announced that they would be reforming to play some gigs – Ian Brown, John Squire, Gary "Mani" Mounfield and Alan "Reni" Wren together onstage, 15 years after their rancorous split – many, many music fans appeared to go completely insane. Grown men wept, danced, hugged, clambered into the loft to find their Reni hat, pointed both hands to the sky for the chorus of I Am the Resurrection, then wept again. The internet exploded with delight. Oasis's Liam Gallagher tweeted "not been this happy since my kids were born" and thousands agreed.

Of course, there were cynics; but they were silenced when all 150,000 tickets for the Roses' Manchester Heaton Park gigs last year were bought in 14 minutes. The band added another Heaton Park show.
