David Tennant's Acclaimed New Series Becomes Streaming Hit
Image
David Tennant's latest series, Rivals, has made a strong impression on streaming charts. The series landed in the Top 10 shows across all streaming platforms last week.

Rivals is an adaptation of Jilly Cooper's 1988 novel of the same name which follows Rupert Campbell-Black and Tony Baddingham as their longstanding rivalry comes to a head. Tennant makes quite a departure from his most notable role as the Doctor in Doctor Who, starring in the steamy drama as Baddingham, with Alex Hassell opposite him as Campbell-Black. The rest of the ensemble cast includes Aidan Turner, Katherine Parkinson, Lisa McGrillis, Alex Hassell, Nafessa Williams, Emily Atack and Danny Dyer. The series made its debut on Disney+ and Hulu on Oct. 18, and Reelgood recently confirmed the series cracked the Top 10 spot in the weekly Top 10 Shows Right Now list for all streaming platforms from Oct. 24-30.

Hulu's 95% Series Rivals Is Full of Crude Humor and Raunchy Chemistry
Image
New to Hulu and Disney+ on October 18, 2024, Rivals is a tawdry English drama exploring the political competition between cabinet minister Rupert Campbell-Black (Alex Hassell) and Lord Tony Baddingham (David Tennant) as they vie for influential control over the fictional country of Rutshire. A classic British comedy of manners gone awry, Rivals has garnered near-unanimous praise from critics, boasting a 95% Rotten Tomatoes rating.

Those familiar with the 1988 source novel would be rightly concerned that the raunchy, sexually explicit material and foul language would be toned down for Disney audiences. Fortunately, Disney has not shied away from the racy and risqu subject. Rather, the streamer has faithfully adapted the lewd source novel and delivered one of the most amusing new TV comedies of 2024.

Based on Jilly Cooper's second Rutshire Chronicles novel, Rivals sees cutthroat independent television station director Tony Baddingham (David Tennant) out to rise to the top of his industry, having poached both brilliant producer Cameron Cook (Nafessa Williams) from New York and radical journalist Declan O'Hara (Aiden Turner) from the BBC. “Firebrand” in Theaters
“Fireband” is a new Brit-produced historical drama feature, directed by Karim Aïnouz, recounting the life of ‘Katherine Parr’, the last wife of ‘Henry VIII’, starring Alicia Vikander, Jude Law, Eddie Marsan, Ruby Bentall, Bryony Hannah, Sam Riley, and Maia Jemmett, releasing June 14, 2024 in theaters:

“..in ‘Tudor England’, twice married, accomplished, and educated ‘Katherine Parr’ (Vikander), reluctantly agrees to become the sixth wife of the tyrannical ‘King Henry VIII’ (Law).

“Her consent to marry him carries great personal risk, given that her predecessors are either vanquished, beheaded, or dead. When Henry appoints her as ‘Regent’, the nation’s ruler during his absence when he departs to fight overseas, he lays a dangerous path for her.

“Henry’s courtiers, suspecting she’s sympathetic to radical ‘Protestant’ beliefs that have taken root in the kingdom and are a threat to their power, scheme against her and cast doubts upon her fidelity to the increasingly ailing and paranoid King.

‘Firebrand’ Review: Karim Aïnouz’s Muddled, Revisionist Portrait of Henry VIII’s Last Wife
Image
The opening title cards of Karim Aïnouz’s Firebrand state that history is written primarily about men and war, while “for the rest of humanity, we must draw our own—often wild—conclusions.” For audiences, it’s a warning of the revisionism to come in this story of Katherine Parr (Alicia Vikander), the sixth and last wife of King Henry VIII (Jude Law).

It is, though, not a promise of a compelling or invigorating story. That’s because the filmmakers, as intent as they were to play fast and loose in the sandbox of history, hardly explore the motives and emotions that drive Katherine as she balances her fealty to her husband and her friend Anne Askew (Erin Doherty), the famed poet who fought for the cause of English Reformation.

Instead, what follows is an often shapeless and rudderless film, focused mainly on whether or not King Henry trusts Katherine.

Streamer Disney+ has revealed a power packed British cast who will join the previously announced David Tennant, Alex Hassell, Aidan Turner and Danny Dyer on the series adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s steamy novel “Rivals.”

Exclusive: Here’s a first look at Alicia Vikander’s turn as Katherine Parr in the Cannes-bound Firebrand.

Gabrielle Tana’s Brouhaha Entertainment has released the first-look photo of the Ex Machina star in costume for Brazilian helmer Karim Ainouz’s first English-language film. See it below.

Alicia Vikander joins Jude Law on cast of ‘Firebrand’
Alicia Vikander
Alicia Vikander has joined the cast of the psychological Tudor horror ‘Firebrand’ as principal photography gets underway.

Vikander replaces the previously announced Michelle Williams in the role of Henry VIII’s final wife Queen Katherine Parr. Law will play the role of the tyrannical Tudor King Henry the VIII.

The story will focus on Parr and her singular point-of-view of the psychological horror of living with a monster—and the remarkable will to not only survive but thrive. It will follow the last months of Katherine Parr’s survival as Queen of England, consequently the last months of Henry VIII’s life as King.

Having witnessed Henry disposing of his wives through death and divorce, not only did Parr have a secret agenda but had no assurances of a happy marriage; in fact, she had no assurances of surviving the marriage at all.

Also in news – Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu...

Call The Midwife Season 4 Review
Call the Midwife, now in its fourth season on PBS, must be one of the most conflicted series on television. On the one hand, it's an exceedingly comforting feeling to return to Nonnatus House and catch up with our lovely midwives. But that cozy feeling is soon punctuated by the screams of mothers in labor, and the high-pitched sequels of their newborns. Duty calls! Though the show's source material was exhausted by the close of the second season, Heidi Thomas and her team of writers have found plenty of new ways to explore all aspects of maternity and motherhood in Poplar, while still keeping the stories feeling true to the real experiences of Jennifer Worth, or "Jenny Lee" on the show (who, though her character version has left us, is still narrating each episode thanks to Vanessa Redgrave's soothing, framing overtones). [caption id="attachment_432329" align="alignright" width="350"] Image via PBS/caption] Nonnatus House, though, feels somewhat scattered these days.
