A native of Sydney, Australia, she studied classical percussion at the Newtown High School of the Performing Arts.

She and Maia Mitchell met when they were 11 years old at an audition in Australia, but lost touch until they met at a hotel when Alycia first moved to LA.

In her last year of school, she was listed as a distinguished achiever by the Government of New South Wales for achieving the top band of six Higher School Certificate courses.

Early in her screen acting career, she appeared in episodes of McLeod's Daughters and Dance Academy.

She made her film debut at age 8 in Rachel Ward's short-feature film Martha's New Coat (2003).

She auditioned for role of Carrie Bradshaw in The Carrie Diaries and was a final contender before AnnaSophia Robb was cast.

Daughter of Jeffrey "Jeff" Debnam, a musician, and wife Leone Carey, a children's television writer.
