Old school anime series like Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z have more characters than many people can count, and having run so long (both of them since the late 1980s and early 1990s) they just keep racking up new characters. Some characters get lost in the mix and are forgotten. Either these characters debuted so long ago that modern fan bases don't know who they are, or they're in so few episodes that many people forget about them.

From main characters like Kamille Bidan from Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam to minor characters like Bubbles from Dragon Ball Z, there are many great characters who don't deserve to be forgotten. One of my earliest anime memories is seeing Sailor Moon in the 90s and being enamored by the fact that Usagi Tsukino led a full team of girls while fighting monsters on a daily basis. From there I’d be introduced to more iconic anime girls and women at a young age. Sailor Moon is a beautifully written epic tale about a girl with a grand and heavy destiny who must find her inner strength and courage. The story is highly thematic, and not meant to revolve around an extremely meticulous power system. The magical logic, plot, and characterization is rather consistent throughout the original manga, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, but the anime changed some elements which shakes some of the story's internal structure.

A plot hole is an inconsistency, and it can crop up in any element of a story, from the magic system to a character's personality and motives, to the overall plot arc. The original anime ran concurrently to Naoko Takeuchi finishing the manga series, so they had to add some filler arcs. Sailor Moon follows a Chosen One hero, Sailor Moon, who becomes the protector of the universe. She's assisted by her fellow Sailor Guardians, and several other mentors and ally characters. A huge part of what makes Sailor Moon such an epic storytelling success is how much thought is put into the entire ensemble of characters.

Side characters like the moon cat, Luna, are more than just useful and hilarious, they are likable and complex. The 1990s Sailor Moon anime also leaned into other minor characters, like Naru and Motoki, and created some filler characters that rose to fan favorite status. Fans associate those likable side characters with their love of the series just as much as they do the titular hero.

Sailor Moonwas many viewers' first introduction to anime. More specifically, it was their first time watching the shojo genre. The anime is both a fun fantasy adventure anime and a story with dark and nuanced themes. It's based on a complete manga series by Naoko Takeuchi that's considered a shojo classic.

When it came time to dub Sailor Moon and license it to air in other countries, some studios unfortunately censored several pieces of the story. They anglicized character names into the Dic English dub and changed entire lines of dialogue. Some episodes are inexplicably cut, and others were trimmed or cut because studios objected to some of the violent content. The many different genres of anime showcase tremendous creativity, but a common trait in the medium is an unbelievably overpowered protagonist. There's a certain level of satisfaction in a strong hero who dominates on the battlefield. However, this superiority can come at the cost of tension and suspense.

There's a fine line between an overpowered main character who's so strong that fights stop being fun to watch and an individual who realistically grows stronger in tandem with the obstacles that they face. There's a lot of value in an underdog, but some satisfying anime feature ridiculously strong main characters who still manage to create excitement in different ways.
