Old school anime series like Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z have more characters than many people can count, and having run so long (both of them since the late 1980s and early 1990s) they just keep racking up new characters. Some characters get lost in the mix and are forgotten. Either these characters debuted so long ago that modern fan bases don't know who they are, or they're in so few episodes that many people forget about them.
From main characters like Kamille Bidan from Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam to minor characters like Bubbles from Dragon Ball Z, there are many great characters who don't deserve to be forgotten. Pets, friends, and support characters alike, there are some pretty good ones out there. Hopefully audience members now and in the future won't forget about the iconic characters that make these series so flavorful.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, born as Usagi Tsukino, is by far the most influential magical girl to emerge in the shojo anime genre, and her story's success is well-earned. Based on Naoko Takeuchi's hit manga series, the story of Usagi's journey to becoming Sailor Moon gracefully balances elements of playful entertainment with meaningful material in the beloved '90s Sailor Moon anime. Although Sailor Moon is undeniably beloved by fans worldwide, some of its two hundred episodes are considerably more significant to the overall story than others.
Sailor Moon often punctuates its most important moments with exciting character introductions, dramatic battles, or magical power-ups accompanied by stylish new outfits. For example, meeting new Sailor Guardians often marks important shifts in the story, and the outcomes of their conflicts against the cosmic villains of the series shape the overall narrative. While it's difficult to deliver such high-stakes elements with every episode,...

Though each arc of Sailor Moon has its own unforgettable narrative, there is no doubt that the very first arc will always remain in the memories of every fan. After all, this is the period of time when Usagi Tsukino, the titular protagonist, first learns she is destined to become the cosmic superheroine known as Sailor Moon. Once she starts to fight more of the Dark Kingdom's minions alongside her fellow Sailor Senshi, Sailor Moon soon learns more about the foes she is fighting against as well as their own pasts.
Working for the higher-up members of the Dark Kingdom are their minions, known as Youma. These monsters had a minor role in the manga, as far fewer would appear, though even more Youma are presented in the '90s anime. Several different elements must come together to craft a fantastic anime. A wonderful story is a necessity, as are likable characters. Stellar animation is always a bonus, although anime like Mob Psycho 100 proved style isn't everything. Of course, great voice actors always have a role to play as well.
However, not all voice actors stick around for the series' entire lifetime. While the reason for not remaining for an entire series may vary, from retirement to being let go for controversial reasons, a new voice actor has to come in to replace the original. This transition can sometimes be quite jarring for fans. Yet, there are times when the new voice actor that takes over the role does so with flying colors.

After the heroes of the Sailor Moon franchise are able to defeat the villains of the Dark Kingdom, they soon come across a brand-new threat, which is the devious Black Moon Clan. Just like their previous foes, the members of the Black Moon Clan all had minions to help them in their conquest. However, the Droids proved to be quite different from the many Youma that worked for the Dark Kingdom.
The Droids are presented in different ways depending on the medium they are featured in. Sometimes a Droid looks similar to another Droid, while in other pieces of media, each Droid is unique. No matter what, however, one must be prepared when encountering a Droid, as their powers are not something to scoff at.

The '90s period of anime is one of the most nostalgic periods for the medium. Several of the most popular series came out of this time and are each made great by their amazing voice actors. Richard Cansino's performance as Himura Kenshin is one of the main factors that gave the series the notoriety it is known for today. The talented voice actor expertly encapsulates Himura's growth with the subtlety only a skilled actor could produce.
Many voice actors turn their otherwise amazing anime into instant classics. Veronica Taylor's role as Ash Ketchum is a huge part of many fans' childhoods. Ash's later performers would each try and replicate Veronica Taylor's iconic take on the character. Overall, several talented voice actors from the 1990s define an entire generation of anime and its successors.

Sailor Moon's story stars Usagi Tsukino and the other Sailor Guardians as they keep the world safe from terrifying cosmic threats. The magical girl anime story is deeply rooted in themes involving reincarnation and destiny, but not every character in the cast is shown to have the ability to be born again.
As the future daughter of Neo-Queen Serenity and King Endymion, the beloved character of Chibi-Usa has a very unique situation when it comes to Sailor Moon's complete timeline. With her time-traveling powers, Chibi-Usa is able to bend fate and keep Sailor Moon's story compelling — but it also raises the question of whether she has the ability to reincarnate like her parents and the other Sailor Guardians. The story may not give a concrete answer, but it definitely gives viewers clues when it comes to whether or not Chibi-Usa has the power of reincarnation.

While Sailor Moon's anime has become one of the most beloved magical girl shows of all time, there were plenty of parts of it that were changed from its original manga source material.

Sailor Moon is not just one of the most popular magical girl anime in existence, but one of the most famous anime ever. The storyline follows the adventures of Usagi Tsukino, who initially believes that she is an average teenager. A chance meeting with a cosmic cat named Luna informs the student that she is actually anything but, and is destined to fight several powerful foes in order to find a missing princess from the moon.
Thanks to its narrative, designs, and unforgettable cast of characters, Sailor Moon has remained a staple of the anime industry to this day. However, there is a key theme in the storyline that can be rather confusing at times, that being the element of time travel. Time itself, according to the Sailor Moon narrative, is not something that should be manipulated, and yet the Sailor Guardians are often able to do so without trouble — most of the time.

In the '90s Sailor Moon anime, Usagi Tsukino transforms into the Pretty Guardian of Love and Justice, fighting to keep the world save from all forces of evil. One of the first villains she encounters on her adventures is Queen Beryl, a sorceress and commander of the Dark Kingdom.
Working for Queen Beryl were the four Shitennou, Jadeite, Nephrite, Zoisite, and Kunzite. While they are ultimately no match for Sailor Moon and the rest of the Sailor Guardians, the Shitennou have some of the most tragic fates in the series. Over different versions of the story, from the anime, manga and the Sailor Moon Crystal adaptation, the Shitennou's roles and final outcome vary significantly, making it hard to tell what truly happened to them after they crossed paths with Sailor Moon.

Usagi's adventures in Sailor Moon helped define the magical girl genre of anime in the '90s, but the story goes much deeper than the powerful transformations and galaxy-ending villains of the week. Long before Usagi awakened her inner Sailor Moon abilities, there was a terrible conflict between Earth and the Moon Kingdom. In Sailor Moon, Usagi Tsukino awakens remarkable powers within her and transforms into the anime’s titular character. As Sailor Moon, she finds herself destined to protect the world from intergalactic threats with her friends and allies, the Sailor Guardians. The series is one of the most recognizable magical girl anime, but its themes actually go a lot deeper than many may realize.
Reincarnation is one of the key elements in Sailor Moon’s story, and it is crucial to Usagi’s development as the series progresses. While many characters undergo their own forms of reincarnation, Sailor Moon’s cycle of life and death is the most critical to the story. From the character’s past as Princess Serenity to her future as Neo-Queen Serenity, Usagi’s reincarnations in Sailor Moon prove that death is never the end, but a cycle of both rebirth and destiny.

Sailor Moon, at its core, is a narrative about love in all of its forms. Usagi Tsukino, for instance, is fueled by the love she has for her fellow Sailor Guardians, as well as her family and lover, Mamoru Chiba. It is this loyalty she holds toward them that grants her the strength needed to defeat even the toughest of enemies, whether they are the Death Busters or even Chaos itself.
However, another being possesses the same selfless nature that Usagi has, that person being Queen Serenity. Sailor Moon is the reincarnation of Queen Serenity's long-lost daughter, as well as the heir to the Moon Kingdom. Though Queen Serenity's role is not as major compared to her daughter's, the queen's own narrative remains an especially important key to the Sailor Senshi's rebirth.

Sailor Moon primarily follows the adventures of Usagi Tsukino, the young school girl who transforms into the eponymous character and fights alongside her friends to keep the world safe from terrifying forces of evil. As she learns more about her powers as Sailor Moon, Usagi makes new friends — and enemies — along the way. One of the most memorable of Usagi's allies is Sailor Saturn, the Messiah of Silence.
Sailor Saturn has a complicated story throughout Sailor Moon's timeline, with the character appearing to die and be reincarnated a few times along the way. Hotaru's journey is a unique one, and by the end of the anime, her ultimate fate is filled with uncertainty. Different versions of Sailor Moon adaptations also handle Hotaru's ending slightly differently, making her true, canonical ending even more confusing to some fans.

One of my earliest anime memories is seeing Sailor Moon in the 90s and being enamored by the fact that Usagi Tsukino led a full team of girls while fighting monsters on a daily basis. From there I’d be introduced to more iconic anime girls and women at a young age. From Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell to Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop , anime is no stranger to strong women full of interesting layers. Then, something happened. As I grew up I found myself appreciating softer characters the likes of Tohru Honda from Fruits Basket ( back in 2001 ), and even Orihime from Bleach struck a chord with me as someone who also lost her older brother at a young age. The version of Usagi Tsukino in the original Sailor Moon anime and the Usagi in the source material manga series, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, differ from each other quite a bit, at times. Some details about Usagi's costume and powers didn't quite make it into the anime. Her personality was also caricaturized for the anime adaptation.
The anime version of Sailor Moon and the manga version of Sailor Moon each have something interesting and enjoyable to give the audience. Readers new to the manga series who grew up watching the anime may be surprised to see some of the differences in the main character, though. The manga doesn't shy away from some of the darker and mature elements in Usagi's story.

Sailor Moon is a beautifully written epic tale about a girl with a grand and heavy destiny who must find her inner strength and courage. The story is highly thematic, and not meant to revolve around an extremely meticulous power system. The magical logic, plot, and characterization is rather consistent throughout the original manga, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, but the anime changed some elements which shakes some of the story's internal structure.
A plot hole is an inconsistency, and it can crop up in any element of a story, from the magic system to a character's personality and motives, to the overall plot arc. The original anime ran concurrently to Naoko Takeuchi finishing the manga series, so they had to add some filler arcs. Sailor Moon is one of the most beloved magical girl anime series of all time, but Usagi Tsukino's adventures in the '90s were actually changed and censored a lot for Western audiences. The original Toonami dub, which aired on Cartoon Network from 1998 to 2001, changed many important aspects of the series, significantly changing important parts of the story.
Among the most notorious parts of Sailor Moon's censorship were Japanese names and cultural elements, queer content and violence and death. One episode early on in Sailor Moon's run was omitted from Toonami's English Dic dub and banned from U.S. broadcasts, but re-examining the episode with a modern lens reveals an episode that has a unique charm and deserves to be watched by fans of the series who may not have realized they never saw it back in the day.

When it comes to the topic of "masterpiece" anime, the answer to what anime fits into this category truly depends on who is asked. For example, fans of the shonen anime genre might say that action-packed anime such as Demon Slayer or Attack on Titan are worthy of the masterpiece title. Meanwhile, fans of the romance genre often consider Fruits Basket or Clannad to be the best anime they have ever seen.

Sailor Moon follows Usagi Tsukino, a middle-school girl who discovers she's also Sailor Moon, a warrior reincarnated from the fallen Moon Kingdom and the only one capable of defending the Earth from the forces of evil. Working alongside her Sailor Guardian friends, she fights for love and justice in an anime spanning 5 seasons, 200 episodes and 3 feature-length films. Given its fierce popularity, the next series, Sailor Moon Crystal, offered fans a faithful-to-the-manga retelling of the iconic Sailor Moon story.
Yet in the original anime series, some problematic elements found their way into the narrative, like censorship and artistic changes made to the Japanese version. From the electra complex readily apparent in the relationship between Chibusa and Mamoru to the way Rei's characterization was drastically changed from the manga to the anime, these controversial components drew criticism and comments from the fans of the series.

At its heart, Sailor Moon is a story about not just the superheroines who save their universe time and again, but the relationships they forge with each other. Focusing primarily on Usagi Tsukino, a student who discovers she is the reincarnation of a long-lost princess from the moon, the narrative follows Sailor Moon as she learns to hone her powers. Along the way, she meets several other young women who also possess powers of their own, and together they team up to save their city.
However, not all is simple when it comes to making new allies. Upon encountering Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune, Sailor Moon and her friends find that the other two Sailor Guardians are not at all interested in teaming up. In reality, forging an alliance with Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus may prove to be easier compared to gaining the trust of Sailor Saturn.

Romances in shojo anime are some of the most beloved. Many of them even feature love triangles to add tension to the story. Not all said love triangles work or fit in their anime. Some are so terrible that they almost ruin the entire series with their inclusion. The worst shojo anime love triangles feature problematic pairings, annoyingly entitled love interests, or are superfluous to the main couple.
Many times, these love triangles only stall the main couple from progressing for no reason other than to drag the story out. Love triangles have their place and can add a lot of great romantic turmoil. But too much of a good thing never pans out for the better - especially with shojo anime love triangles.

Sailor Moon is all about young Usagi Tsukino's magical adventures to save the world from total annihilation. In the name of the moon, she leads the group of Sailor Guardians, keeping Earth and the entire Galaxy safe from terrifying cosmic forces of evil. With her talking cat Luna by her side, Usagi's journey often sees her taking on terrifying villains, but she rarely makes much time for training.
As one of the quintessential magical girl anime, Sailor Moon carved out its own unique space in the world of anime, and the franchise's legacy has managed to endure for decades. Despite receiving little to no formal training, Usagi still possesses significant abilities, and she's often able to surpass trained warriors and enemies that, at least in theory, should have better mastery of their skills than she does. Sailor Moon is five seasons long, and every new story arc introduces a different team of villains, allies, awakened heroes, and memorable minor characters. Many hero and villain characters have become synonymous with the series. Sailor Moon herself is one of the most recognizable characters in anime.
With so much epic storytelling and a large cast of characters, some don't get as much attention as they should. Naoko Takeuchi put so much thought into her characters and designed a setting so lush that audiences love characters, even if they don't end up playing into the overall plot very much. Even the creators of the 1990s anime made some stellar minor characters that didn't stem from the manga.

Sailor Moon follows a Chosen One hero, Sailor Moon, who becomes the protector of the universe. She's assisted by her fellow Sailor Guardians, and several other mentors and ally characters. A huge part of what makes Sailor Moon such an epic storytelling success is how much thought is put into the entire ensemble of characters.
Side characters like the moon cat, Luna, are more than just useful and hilarious, they are likable and complex. The 1990s Sailor Moon anime also leaned into other minor characters, like Naru and Motoki, and created some filler characters that rose to fan favorite status. Fans associate those likable side characters with their love of the series just as much as they do the titular hero.

As more and more time passes, retro anime continues to fall out of the public eye. Anime that were once the pinnacle of their time fall into obscurity. However, this doesn't need to be the end of such anime. All it would take to return them to popularity is a proper remake, perhaps even one by Studio Ghibli.
Although the studio typically creates their own works, they're no stranger to creating films for other franchises. One of their earliest works is Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro, bringing the gentleman thief Lupin more attention as he steals the audience's hearts. Studio Ghibli could revitalize other retro anime with a movie, if that was something they chose to do.

Ultra Instinct Goku is one of the most powerful characters in all of anime. He is ridiculously strong, fast, and has power on par with Dragon Ball's Gods of Destruction. While Goku still has yet to fully master this ability in the Tournament of Power, it's clear that he stands head and shoulders above the competition. However, there are plenty of other godly beings that could give the Saiyan a run for his money.
People might be surprised at how many other characters can rival and defeat Goku in his Ultra Instinct state. These god-like entities usually only attain this power towards the end of their series or may simply have these powers from the start. Regardless of the character, it's still easy to see how Goku could struggle against their powers. Sailor Moon follows Usagi Tsukino, a middle-school student who befriends a talking cat named Luna and possesses a magical brooch that allows her to transform into the titular Sailor Moon, a celestial guardian who protects the world from the forces of evil. As the series progresses, she’s joined by her friends and fellow Sailor Guardians to combat increasingly powerful opponents, all while she navigates unlocking her dormant memories from her past life as Princess Serenity from the fallen Moon Kingdom.

These heartless and evil villains, from the string-pulling Wiseman to the traitorous Queen Beryl, serve as narrative foils to Sailor Moon’s loving and light heart.

Sailor Moonwas many viewers' first introduction to anime. More specifically, it was their first time watching the shojo genre. The anime is both a fun fantasy adventure anime and a story with dark and nuanced themes. It's based on a complete manga series by Naoko Takeuchi that's considered a shojo classic.
When it came time to dub Sailor Moon and license it to air in other countries, some studios unfortunately censored several pieces of the story. They anglicized character names into the Dic English dub and changed entire lines of dialogue. Some episodes are inexplicably cut, and others were trimmed or cut because studios objected to some of the violent content. Thankfully, the full version of Sailor Moon is available in several languages now.

Draon Ball's Goku is often celebrated as the pinnacle of strength and raw power in anime. Renowned for his amazing transformations and relentless training, he's capable of taking on galactic-level enemies. However, the Sailor Moon universe offers its own host of cosmic villains -- and their powers often rival or surpass Goku's.
While Usagi Tsukino / Sailor Moon is undoubtedly the strongest character in her own story, her allies and villains often give her a run for her money. Characters like Sailor Galaxia, Sailor Saturn and Chaos all wield incredible magic that has unbelievably destructive abilities -- like manipulating reality, annihilating total planets or even altering the flow of time. While these characters may not have the same raw physical strength as Goku, they have their own unique strengths that may prove challenging for him to overcome in a hypothetical battle.

The many different genres of anime showcase tremendous creativity, but a common trait in the medium is an unbelievably overpowered protagonist. There's a certain level of satisfaction in a strong hero who dominates on the battlefield. However, this superiority can come at the cost of tension and suspense.
There's a fine line between an overpowered main character who's so strong that fights stop being fun to watch and an individual who realistically grows stronger in tandem with the obstacles that they face. There's a lot of value in an underdog, but some satisfying anime feature ridiculously strong main characters who still manage to create excitement in different ways. Better yet, sometimes the underdogs are exactly the same characters who become the strongest.
