The Black Sunday Film Festival is back with blood on its boots and a mission to celebrate the boldest voices in genre cinema. Now in its sixth edition, the Essex-based event has announced a striking line-up for 2025, running from 1st to 3rd May at Colchester’s Firstsite. Championing independent horror, dark sci-fi, psychological thrillers and everything in between, the festival has carved out a reputation for unearthing daring new work from both the UK and beyond. This year’s programme is no exception.
Opening night sets the tone with three wildly different but equally provocative features. Kaye Adelaide’s The Rebrand makes its UK debut, turning influencer culture inside out in a mockumentary that promises satire with bite. That’s followed by Mary Beth McAndrews’ Bystanders, an unflinching revenge thriller that left festival audiences reeling during its previous run on the circuit. The triple-bill concludes with the Essex premiere of Krazy House,...

Experimentation is essential to filmmaking, but not all experiments are successful. Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil's Dutch action-horror comedy Krazy House is a catastrophic flop. What should have been a 20-minute Adult Swim special is dragged into a 90-minute absurdist bore that attempts to roast corny 90s sitcoms, religious zealotry, and sunshiny dispositions. It's a shame because there's genuine ambition behind the uncanny setup of a studio-audience program morphing into scathing darkness la Kevin Can F**k Himself but Haars and Kuil churn their ideas into an unfunny, sensory-numbing, downright affronting tonal slurry.

How does Kevin Smith feel about receiving his best reviews in years for “The 4:30 Movie,” a film that he shot at his childhood movie theater after purchasing it in 2021?
“The lesson is never make a movie until you have the location first,” Smith said with a laugh during a recent conversation with IndieWire. “Because, in the case of ‘Clerks,’ there was a location and then the story grew from that. And with ‘The 4:30 Movie,’ it’s like I had a location and the story grew from that… I can’t fuck up those movies, I guess is what it comes down to.”
Smith grew up attending movies at the Atlantic Twin Cinemas in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, which was later rebranded as the Atlantic Movie House. And like many independent theaters in America, the venue was already struggling before the Covid-19 pandemic hit. But 2020 proved to be a...

Alicia Silverstone and Nick Frost headline the bizarre Dutch comedy Krazy House – and here’s the trailer for the film.
Debuting at the Sundance Film Festival right at the start of the year (we covered it here), Krazy House – a movie you can comfortably describe as a bit ‘out there’ – was met with a mix of reviews, some of them very much on the hostile side.
Headlined by Nick Frost and Alicia Silverstone, Krazy House was described as like the sitcom bit of Natural Born Killers turned into a feature film.
I interviewed Nick Frost for the latest issue of Film Stories magazine, and he was open about the fact that some really hadn’t taken to the film at all. But also, that the movie is a bit of a swing.

Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil's violent satire Krazy House is coming to VOD on October 4th and the official trailer is here to mark the occasion. When Russian workers in Bernie’s house turn out to be wanted criminals, Bernie must man up and save his wife and the rest of his studio audience approved sitcom family. Response to the flick was decidedly mixed after Krazy House's World Premiere at Sundance - our own Mel was definitely not a fan - but enough pull quotes were obtained from those who did like it. A lot of the Anarchists are big fans of the New Kids movies that Haars and van der Kull were a part of, so we're likely going to check...

Nick Frost returns to the horror-comedy genre with the wild Krazy House trailer.
Ahead of the movie's October debut on digital platforms, XYZ Films has unveiled the official Krazy House trailer. The video introduces Nick Frost's Bernie Christian, a religious homemaker in a prototypical '90s sitcom, as he and his family engage in kooky antics, including breaking the sink and spilling water all throughout the kitchen. The trailer subsequently introduces Pjotr, Dmitri and Igor, three plumbers Bernie hires to fix the situation in the kitchen, only to discover they have actually largely destroyed the room.
The Krazy House trailer quickly turns chaotic as Bernie's inner voice begins telling him to kill them all, suddenly shifting to a modern-day camera, with the house's windows all boarded up and Frost's character having a bloody face. Choosing to take his anger out on the sketchy-looking trio, the rest of the trailer...

Leave it to the Dutch to bring us a truly bonkers satirical take on 90s sitcoms that turns into a nightmare for Shaun of the Deads Nick Frost and his bumbling family. Thats the premise behind the new horror-comedy Krazy House, which is slated to be available on all VOD platforms beginning October 4, and also stars Alicia Silverstone and Kevin Connolly.
Directed by Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil, Krazy House tells the tale of an ordinary Jesus-loving American family taken hostage by the Russian workers they hired to fix up their home. The bloody new trailer showcases the movies meta take on sitcoms from a bygone era, complete with a laugh track and live studio audience. As the Russians dismantle their home board-by-board, Bernard (Nick Frost) grows increasingly frustrated until he finally snaps and decides hes not going to take it anymore. "Krazy House is taped in front of a live studio audience." (Though not really...) XYZ Films has revealed an official trailer for the film Krazy House, a bonkers weird & crazy creation from the two Dutch filmmakers Steffen Haars & Flip van der Kuil. This premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival at Midnight, and the reviews were awful. It's an acquired taste if you're into this kind of wacky humor. When Russian workers in Bernie's house turn out to be wanted criminals on the hunt for stashed loot, Bernie must man up and save his wife and the rest of his studio audience approved sitcom family. It's a riff on 90s sitcoms, taking place all in one "crazy house", but with even more disgusting and heinous things happening all the time. The horror film stars Nick Frost, Alicia Silverstone, Kevin Connolly, Gaite Jansen, and Walt Klink. I saw this at Sundance and absolutely hated it,...

XYZ Films has dropped a new trailer for Krazy House, the action-horror comedy which our own Chris Bumbray absolutely hated when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.
Part ’90s sitcom, part blood-soaked, gross-out mayhem, the Krazy House trailer proudly features its offensive subject matter as a badge of pride. The films stars Nick Frost as Bernie, a religious homemaker who discovers that the Russian workers in his house are, in fact, criminals searching for loot. In order to save his wife and the rest of his studio audience-approved sitcom family, Bernie has to man up and unleash his inner beast. The film was written and directed by Steffen Haars & Flip van der Kuil and stars Nick Frost, Alicia Silverstone, Kevin Connolly, Gaite Jansen, and Walt Klink.
Krazy House feels like it’s targeting a very niche audience who might appreciate its shock humour, but that didn’t include Bumbray.

In her “Krazy House” review for IndieWire, critic Katie Rife described writer/directors Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil’s absurdist Dutch horror comedy as testing “the limits of taste.”
With its hyper-violent style and blasphemous dark humor, the latest feature from the filmmakers behind “New Kids Turbo” and “Bros Before Hos” also inspired Rife to write that their movie was “like an Adult Swim infomercial directed by black-metal teenagers.” That’s a point of pride in the outrageous project’s equally unapologetic first trailer — which debuted exclusively with IndieWire after “Krazy House” made its divisive world premiere at Sundance in January.
The first look above includes quotes from our site’s critical review and others to spectacularly cheeky self-endorsement. Decidedly not for everyone, this sitcom deconstruction quickly gained a reputation for its gonzo shock value and outright mocking of Christianity. Celebrating the world premiere of his new horror comedy, Krazy House, at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, writer and director Steffen Haars dropped by the Collider Studio, sponsored by Film.io, to talk with Editor-in-Chief Steve Weintraub about the unhinged premise of his fifth feature film with co-writer and director, Flip Van der Kuil. The Dutch duo were inspired by the idyllic family units on shows like Full House and Family Ties, with their bite-size, easy-to-solve dilemmas, but they wondered what would happen if you threw a violent, bloody wrench into that beloved formula.

The cast commits to the ridiculousness of the script, but the film tests the audience's patience with slow pacing. The script's examination of masculinity is weak. Despite committed performances, Krazy House fails to execute its potential.
At every Sundance Film Festival, there’s always a wacky film that gets movie lovers talking for one reason or another. This year, that film is directing duo Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil’s Krazy House. What begins as a quirky examination of the "man of the house" slowly morphs into an unhinged eruption of mayhem. Not too long ago, IMDb introduced a new feature to their website called the Parents Guide. The goal was to give parents a quick rundown of risqué, violent or suggestive scenes from films, and allow them to make quick decisions as to whether or not they should allow their child to watch said movies. Parents who felt aghast that Spielberg would show a scene where a father was unable to reach his child’s outstretched hand, as in the 1991 classic Hook, might choose to skip ahead, while other parents who are appalled by children debating whether or not Wolfman has “nards”, could forgo all of Shane Black and Fred Dekker’s 1987 monster mashup Monster Squad. However, should one day their children ask them if they can sit down and watch a screening of Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil’s new film Krazy House, the Finnigan’s Wake length...

The simple, straightforward idea of actor-comedian Nick Frost in full-on berserker mode all but sells itself. On the strength of that idea alone, failure should be the least likely of likely options. Unfortunately, Krazy House, the latest film from writer-directors Steffen Haars and Flip Van der Kuil, fails on practically every level, promising far more than Frost-in-berserker mode and somehow delivering almost nothing across a tediously self-indulgent, bloated, sub-90-minute-running time, and blood- and gore-splattered Frost wasting his considerable talents to no discernible avail. Haars and Van del Kuil wrap the promising concept of Frost-in-berserker mode around a fictitious 90s Christian-themed sitcom centered on the Christian family. It’s both what...

Remember that scene in Natural Born Killers in which the Juliette Lewis character enters a Married… with Children-style sitcom, with Rodney Dangerfield playing her dad? Imagine a whole movie based on that concept, add tons of violence and gore — not to mention gags about Christ and Catholicism, a tray-full of crystal meth and, in one late sequence, a dog that gets decapitated by a shotgun blast — and you’ll get an idea of what’s in store while watching the Sundance Midnight selection, Krazy House.
As over-the-top as that already sounds, the film is even more exhausting to sit through — like a hard-r Saturday Night Live sketch that’s been taken way too far, to the point you’re just hoping that it stops. Relentless and off-putting, the English-language debut of Dutch hitmakers Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil is unlikely to land a wide audience in the U.

It starts innocuously enough. “Krazy House,” the English-language debut of Dutch filmmakers Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil, launches with a ‘90s family sitcom parody that ribs their cheese and cringe. Complete with the laughter of a live studio audience, a religiously-minded family — aptly named the Christians — goes about their business while their klutzy patriarch, Bernie (Nick Frost), bumbles and fumbles about. He even comes complete with a punny catchphrase, “cheese ‘n’ rice,” to quench his blasphemous outbursts.

Modeled on a late-’80s/early-’90s American family sitcom — which soon transitions to a midnight splatterfest — the tongue-in-cheek Dutch production “Krazy House” has all the transgressive stylings of a 15 year-old’s Reddit post on an atheism forum in 2010. Directors Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil offer ideas of subversion that feel both long-outdated in concept and completely dull in execution, to the point that merely describing the film feels irresponsible, lest its premise accidentally lure curious viewers to the cinema.
Nick Frost plays Bernie Christian, the pointedly-named patriarch of a throwback family sitcom. Plot: A nineties TV family finds their home invaded by Russian gangsters. The family’s useless patriarch, Bernie (Nick Frost), a devout Christian with long-suppressed psychotic tendencies, must unleash those urges to save his family.
Review: It happens every year. There’s always at least one movie at Sundance every year that tests my commitment to sitting through pretty much everything I see. This, however, was a tough one. The definition of satire is flexible, but not quite flexible enough to accommodate “Krazy House.” This bloody, anarchic hand grenade of a film is just straight-up blasphemous, opening with a brushed-aluminum shot of a cop plugging a nun full of bullets and escalating from there. Like an Adult Swim infomercial directed by black-metal teenagers, the latest feature from Dutch comedy duo Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil takes sneering pleasure in giving the middle finger to God in hyper-violent, absurdist fashion.
The Adult Swim bit is baked into the premise of the movie, which takes place entirely within the confines of a sound stage reminiscent of the set from “Married…With Children.” The sitcom-within-the-film is called, naturally, “Krazy House.” It revolves around the Christian family, which is composed of standard-issue archetypes: bucktoothed bumbler Bernie (Nick Frost); his wife Eva (Alicia Silverstone), who’s naturally way out of his league...

The logline for writers/directors Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil’s Krazy House reads like the perfect gonzo midnighter for the horror crowd. The initial setup is meant to skewer the zaniness of ’90s sitcoms, complete with a live studio audience and aspect ratio to match. But that premise quickly goes off the rails, not in a good way, stretching a short film concept into a grueling slog of empty shock value.
Complete with an opening theme song and credits, Krazy House introduces the Christian family. Bernie (Nick Frost) serves as the oafish but well-meaning dad, the polar opposite of his neurotic workaholic wife, Eva (Alicia Silverstone). Then there’s his gum-swallowing daughter Sarah (Gaite Jansen) and science-obsessed son Adam (Walt Klink), both unamused by Bernie’s clumsiness and steadfast devotion to Jesus Christ. It’s only house pup Angel that seems not to mind Bernie’s sitcom hijinks.

Festival runs January 18-28.
Sundance Film Festival kicks off on Thursday when the industry will gather on the mountain to put the world to rights and buyers will engage in the annual hunt for the festival’s must-have acquisition titles.
Streamers and theatrical buyers will vie for coveted breakouts and while there will almost certainly be a number of on-site deals as there were last year when Netflix swooped on Fair Play in a $20m deal, Apple forked out close to that amount for Flora And Son, and Searchlight Pictures paid $8m for Theater Camp, the post-Covid deal lag will...

The Sundance Film Festival is one of the most highly respected film festivals in the world, and while the horror genre generally doesn’t seem to receive as much respect as it deserves, horror has had a steady presence at Sundance over the years. In fact, just last year the Sundance horror line-up included the likes of Infinity Pool, Talk to Me, My Animal, and Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls. The Sundance 2024 line-up was revealed earlier today (you can see the list Here) – and there again a good number of horror movies included in the program.
Below you can take a closer look at some of the horror movies that will be showing at Sundance 2024, with images to go along with each one of them.
Of course, most of the horror can be found in the Midnight program:

The Dutch comedy duo of Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil have a new project heading our way -- and it stars some pretty recognizable faces. Nick Frost has been tapped to lead the pair's first English-language feature, which is already gaining some pretty intense buzz. In a statement to Variety, Haars and van der Kuil said, "It's a dream come true working with this amazing, talented cast on our most insane movie yet." That's one hell of a claim considering these are the folks who made the cocktail of absurdity and vulgarity known as "Ron Goossens, Low Budget Stuntman."
Frost also spoke with Variety and said, "'Krazy House' has been a completely bonkers project to be a part of and I've absolutely loved every minute of it." This is also certainly quite a claim, as Nick Frost is somewhat synonymous with wild, wacky, and wonderful comedy films.

“I once thought that there were no second acts in American lives,” F. Scott Fitzgerald famously wrote, in his notes on The Last Tycoon. To which Cher Horowitz in Clueless would say: “Ugh, as if!”
Nearly 30 years after she spoke those iconic lines, we are witnessing the second act in the career of Alicia Silverstone.
Her Super Bowl ad for shopping platform Rakuten, where she slipped back into Cher’s yellow tartan skirt to recreate the Clueless debate scene, went viral (as did her first TikTok appearance, again as Cher, spoofing the “as if!” scene with her son Bear), returning Silverstone to the top of the pop culture conversation.
In the independent film world, Silverstone has never been hotter. With roles in The Lodge —the 2019 Sundance chiller from Goodnight Mommy directors Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz — and Jennifer Reeder’s new meta-horror film Perpetrator, which premiered in the Panorama section...

Having previously played a married couple in the 2019 film Fighting with My Family, Nick Frost and Lena Headey are now set to reunite in the serial killer thriller Svalta, which is expected to start filming in Finland later this year. The Dutch filmmaking duo of Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil will be directing Svalta, working from a screenplay Frost wrote himself.
Svalta will follow
a family on their summer vacation to a remote island with a dark past. There, they discover that a serial killer is on the loose and that unfortunately for them, the hostile locals have no interest in helping them.
Wayward Entertainment, Resolute Films, Film Service Finland, and XYZ Films are producing Svalta with Frost, who provided the following statement to Deadline: “Take a gentle English family and send them on holiday to a tiny Swedish island full of maniacs. Simple. Not so much Nuts in May.

Fantaspoa 2022 Announced: "After two years of successful online editions, the 18th edition of the beloved Brazilian genre festival Fantaspoa will return to the cinemas from April 15th through May 1st. This year, attendees will discover a very different Fantaspoa from its last on-site edition (a very distant 2019): instead of its usual two venues, the fest will take place simultaneously in five cinemas, with part of its program also being available online, geo-blocked for viewers within Brazil.
The poster for this year’s festival was conceived by the festival’s art director Thalles Mourão, with the drawing from local artist Fernanda Moreira. We've made no secret of our love for the work of Dutch comedy duo Steffn Haars and Flip Van der Kuil here in these pages over the years. The writing and directing duo first came to prominence as part of the New Kids comedy team, rising up quickly from online videos to a full TV series to a pair of feature films built around their very particular comedy style that proved to be massive local hits and hugely popular on the festival circuit. The retirement of the New Kids brand and characters didn't seem to slow down their rise at all as subsequent features (Bros Before Hos and Ron Goosens Low Budget Stunt Man) also proved to be major successes. And now the duo has...

A deceptively smart film about proudly stupid people, Ron Goossens, Low-Budget Stuntman is the latest homegrown hit from Dutch writer-director team Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil. The duo are best known in northern Europe for their TV comedy series New Kids, which spawned two big-screen spinoffs and scored significant success abroad, notably in Germany. Their default comic style is loud, lewd and knowingly crude, but leavened with sharp production values and thick dollops of irony.

The sense of humor of Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil is not for everyone. The films they make are rude, shocking, incredibly insensitive and always cross at least one border too many (or outright break a taboo). Their films are also very well made, technically accomplished, and funny as hell. New Kids Turbo was their feature debut, and it had all of these things. It surprised me by how... well... how Good it was. And since then, Steffen and Flip have only grown, venturing out into adding some honest drama into the crazy antics. By now, I'm no longer blind-sided by their expertise. I'm more-or-less expecting it, and each film they make can count on me buying a ticket for it. Which is...

Here at Screen Anarchy we're big fans of directors Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil. The Dutch duo surprised friends and foes back in 2010 with New Kids Turbo, a cinema version of the sketch comedy troupe they were part of. The film was remarkably accomplished (see review), and excelled on a technical level. It was also a huge commercial success, thankfully paving the way for their next two films: New Kids Nitro and Bro's Before Ho's. So what have they been up to? The good news is: a new film. In Ron Goossens: Low Budget Stunt Man, the titular alcoholic stuntman (Tim Haars) loses his wife, and can only win her back by bedding the beautiful actress Bo Maerten. Hilarity and disaster follow,...
