The series, set in the world of professional women’s basketball, which is having a moment with stars such as Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, comes from two-time WNBA All-Star Chiney Ogwumike and Glow creators Carly Mensch and Liz Flahive.

The half-hour project follows a hot-shot rookie WNBA player and her inexperienced agent navigating the wild ups and downs of the world of women’s professional basketball. It is loosely inspired by Ogwumike and her longtime business partner and agent, Allison Galer, who chose an unconventional path after Ogwumike, who was the first pick in the 2014, chose the 24-year old as her rep. It will look at the “glamour and grind” of women’s sports.

TNT Sports’ coverage of the upstart Unrivaled women’s basketball league is taking shape, with the Warner Bros. Discovery division officially rolling out studio programming that will be televised alongside the live games.

GroupM, the Wpp-owned media buying agency, says that it has “exceeded” its goal to double the annual media spend on women’s sports programming.

The agency had announced its intention to double its spend in the area earlier this year, in connection to the NCAA women’s college basketball tournament, which drew record-shattering ratings. Now it says it blew past that goal in months, with more than 20 major advertisers increasing their commitment to women’s sports, including Adidas, Adobe, Ally, Coinbase, Danone, Discover, Domino’s, DoorDash, Google, Indeed, Mars, method, Nationwide, Target, Tj Maxx, Unilever and Universal Pictures.

And the spend boosted media companies as well, with Disney, NBCUniversal, Paramount and YouTube all offering advertising opportunities for the 2024-2025 year.

Warner Bros Discovery’s TNT Sports on Wednesday signed a multiyear media-rights deal with Unrivaled, the newly formed 3-on-3 women’s pro basketball league that tips off next year featuring a slew of WNBA stars that will be coming off that league’s highest-profile season yet.

The agreement calls for 45 live regular-season matchups three nights a week in primetime across TNT (Mondays and Fridays) and its Wbd sibling truTV on Saturdays. All games to be streamed live on Wbd’s Max.

As part of the deal, TNT Sports will also invest in the league, which was founded by WNBA stars Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart. The inaugural season opens January 17.

Documentaries and docuseries' always grab my attentin and I definitely gravitate towards them. I'm sure many of you are the same!

Kamala Harris’ acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday is being widely praised — even Fox News is saying a few nice things about the Vice President’s remarks.

Coming in at 40 minutes and within the primetime TV window on the all-important East Coast, Harris’ speech in front of 5000 delegates at Chicago’s United Center was full of language and pledges that would have fit in at a DNC or GOP convention in the 1990s, as Ted Johnson and I said in our story earlier tonight. As an example, her deft handling of Hamas’ murderous attack on Israel last fall, the scorched-earth Gaza War and calls for a cease-fire and return of hostages took much of the sting out of one of the sharpest divisions within the Democratic Party.

The speeches from Barack and Michelle Obama were the highlight of the second night of the Democratic National Convention, but also the first-of-its-kind, well-produced ceremonial roll call, set to a DJ’s jam.

In the arena lit with color changing blinking lights, there was Lil Jon, taking off in a surprise rap when Georgia was called to cast its votes for Kamala Harris; Sean Astin paying homage to Rudy as Indiana announced its tally; and Spike Lee appearing with the New York delegation as its governor boasted of the Empire State’s supremacy.

Then there was Wisconsin, a key battleground state, and its governor, Tony Evers, surrounded by delegates wearing cheesehead hats. As he started to trumpet his state, telling the arena that he was here “because I’m jazzed as hell,” he tripped up in announcing the tally for Kamala Harris.

Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark broke the WNBA record for assists by a rookie in a single season during a Sunday game against Seattle Storm.

The Iowa-hailing player surpassed the record previously held by Ticha Penicheiro, who had 225 assists in 1998 while playing for the Sacramento Monarchs.

“Super proud of you,” the Portuguese guard said in a video shared on X congratulating Clark. “I know the work that you put in. A lot of people always talked about your shooting. I was always mesmerized about your passing, your court vision and how you make your teammates better. So this record is in great hands. And continue to do what you do, continue to elevate your game and the women’s game and the WNBA.”

Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese will be featured in the next NBA 2K edition, out Sept. 6, and manufacturer Take-Two Interactive is priming the pump by releasing images of two of the WNBA’s newest stars.

Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese were depicted in a pair of posts on X today, with both posts getting hundreds of thousands of views on the platform.

NBA 2K is the best-selling basketball video game for Take-Two Interactive Software Inc., which reported a record $3.37 billion in revenue last year.

NBA 2K allows players to configure a female player, and in 2021, WNBA star Candace Parker was featured on its cover, the first women to be so spotlighted.

Today’s images of Clark and Reese showcase the prime candidates for WNBA Rookie of the Year.

Punkie Johnson is leaving “Saturday Night Live” after four seasons.

Johnson apparently broke the news to an audience at a stand-up comedy show at Brooklyn’s Union Hall on July 31, at which fellow “SNL” cast members Molly Kearny, Devon Walker and Michael Longfellow were also on the lineup.

Johnson confirmed her exit in a video posted to Instagram on Thursday.

“After four seasons, I will not be returning to ‘SNL’ for the 50th,” Johnson said, adding that when she took an audience question at her stand-up show about whether she was excited for the next season of the NBC sketch comedy series, she said, “Oh, I ain’t coming back.”

“It’s no bad blood, it’s no bridges burned, it’s no hard feelings,” Johnson continued. “Bro, I love my people! I didn’t think none of this was going to be a big deal.”

Changes are starting to happen at Saturday Night Live ahead of its upcoming 50th season.

Punkie Johnson has left the show after four seasons. She revealed the news during a comedy show last night and just confirmed it on Instagram.

“After four seasons, I will not be returning to SNL for the 50th,” she said.

“It’s no bad blood, it’s no bridges burnt, it’s no hard feelings,” she added. “SNL was a dream I didn’t even know I could achieve. Johnson, whose real name is Jessica Williams, joined the NBC show as a featured player in Season 46 before being promoted to repertory status in 2022 ahead of its 48th season.

The league already has deals finalized with NBC, Amazon and Disney, but can add up to two more rights packages to its total inventory.

The WNBA isn’t quite done making deals. That’s according to Front Office Sports, who reports that the league is getting closer to selling two additional rights packages after finalizing deals with NBCUniversal, Amazon and Disney in late July. The three packages already sold will fetch $200 million per year, and if it sells the other two packages it can make more than $260 million each season over the 11-year lifetime of the contracts.

The WNBA’s new deals start in 2026, and continue for 11 seasons.

The WNBA is ready for a big raise. The league has announced that it has agreed to terms on deals with Disney, NBCUniversal, and Amazon to distribute its games starting in 2026 and continuing for the next 11 seasons. The agreements will see games distributed on broadcast and cable channels, as well as various streaming platforms. It mirrors the NBA’s new rights deals in terms of distribution partners, but it differs in that the WNBA still has the right to add up to two new partners to help it grow its audience even further.

Key Details: Previous reporting indicated the WNBA will make $200 million per season in the deal. NBCU platforms will get 50 regular season games each year, while 30 will play on Disney platforms and 30 more will appear on Prime Video. Semifinals and Finals series will rotate between partners over the course of the deal.

Angel Reese, one of the rookie stars of the WNBA, is signing with the Unrivaled 3-on-3 basketball league, which will play in the winter.

The announcement on Reese was made on Instagram on Wednesday morning. The league, which was started by WNBA stars Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart, will provide an off-season outlet to women pro players, many of whom head to overseas teams when the WNBA is not in season.

The league boasts the “highest average salary in professional women’s sports history,” saying all players will get six-figure salaries and equity. Much has been made of the low starting salaries for WNBA players, although the amounts are subsidized by endorsements and other ancillary income.

Reflecting on their long-term deal with the NBA, ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro and EVP of Programming & Acquisitions Rosalyn Durant said the rise of the WNBA of late provided extra motivation to renew.

“There’s a lot of demand for WNBA content right now, which, from our perspective, is fantastic,” Pitaro said during a press call. The call was arranged after the league’s confirmation of long-rumored rights deals with Disney-espn, NBCUniversal and Prime Video, at a reported $77 billion over 11 years.

The 2024 WNBA All-Star Game on July 20 has averaged 3.442 million viewers on ABC, according to Nielsen. That is the largest audience ever fo an WNBA All-Star game, topping the previous high of 1.441M who watched the 2003 game on the broadcast network by a whopping 139%.

It was the largest WNBA audience ever — regular season, playoffs, draft, etc. — on ESPN Networks, surpassing the audience for the 2024 WNBA Draft – also buoyed by the star power of Clark and Reese — which delivered 2.45 million viewers. The game was the third most-viewed WNBA event ever and the largest WNBA audience since the league’s first two nationally televised games in 1997.
