Exclusive: The WNBA is getting its first ever scripted TV series. Peacock is developing a series titled The W.
The series, set in the world of professional women’s basketball, which is having a moment with stars such as Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, comes from two-time WNBA All-Star Chiney Ogwumike and Glow creators Carly Mensch and Liz Flahive.
The half-hour project follows a hot-shot rookie WNBA player and her inexperienced agent navigating the wild ups and downs of the world of women’s professional basketball. It is loosely inspired by Ogwumike and her longtime business partner and agent, Allison Galer, who chose an unconventional path after Ogwumike, who was the first pick in the 2014, chose the 24-year old as her rep. It will look at the “glamour and grind” of women’s sports.

Various team executives discussed the failure of the regional sports network model at the Axs Drive event.
The 2024 Axs Drive hosted by Axs and Sports Business Journal is being held this week in Frisco, Texas. The event has seen numerous sports and media executives come together to discuss sports from a business analytics perspective, and it gave team brass the chance to speak on many subjects. One topic that was rife for discussion during this week’s panels was the failure of the regional sports network (Rsn) model. Most officials agreed that RSNs were no longer the most favorable way to distribute content, but many disagreed on the best way forward in a landscape where basically everything about the way Americans consume video is changing.

The WNBA’s new deals start in 2026, and continue for 11 seasons.
The WNBA is ready for a big raise. The league has announced that it has agreed to terms on deals with Disney, NBCUniversal, and Amazon to distribute its games starting in 2026 and continuing for the next 11 seasons. The agreements will see games distributed on broadcast and cable channels, as well as various streaming platforms. It mirrors the NBA’s new rights deals in terms of distribution partners, but it differs in that the WNBA still has the right to add up to two new partners to help it grow its audience even further.
Key Details: Previous reporting indicated the WNBA will make $200 million per season in the deal. NBCU platforms will get 50 regular season games each year, while 30 will play on Disney platforms and 30 more will appear on Prime Video. Semifinals and Finals series will rotate between partners over the course of the deal.

Angel Reese, one of the rookie stars of the WNBA, is signing with the Unrivaled 3-on-3 basketball league, which will play in the winter.
The announcement on Reese was made on Instagram on Wednesday morning. The league, which was started by WNBA stars Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart, will provide an off-season outlet to women pro players, many of whom head to overseas teams when the WNBA is not in season.
The league boasts the “highest average salary in professional women’s sports history,” saying all players will get six-figure salaries and equity. Much has been made of the low starting salaries for WNBA players, although the amounts are subsidized by endorsements and other ancillary income.
Reese set a record for double-doubles earlier this season and is leading the WNBA in rebounding as a rookie. She’s averaging 13.5 points and 12 rebounds a game. She and Caitlin Clark are the top...

Reflecting on their long-term deal with the NBA, ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro and EVP of Programming & Acquisitions Rosalyn Durant said the rise of the WNBA of late provided extra motivation to renew.
“There’s a lot of demand for WNBA content right now, which, from our perspective, is fantastic,” Pitaro said during a press call. The call was arranged after the league’s confirmation of long-rumored rights deals with Disney-espn, NBCUniversal and Prime Video, at a reported $77 billion over 11 years.
“We’re looking at a rising tide right now, where we’re seeing our competitors in the industry really get behind women’s sports in general and behind the WNBA,” Pitaro continued. “And that’s a good thing! We love the momentum around women’s sports in general but especially around the WNBA.”

Beginning on July 24, the Paris Olympics will measure athletic greatness in finite windows of time.
Noah Lyles will run 100 meters in comfortably under 10 seconds. It will take a bit longer — more than 15 minutes — for Katie Ledecky to swim 1,500 meters. French baller Victor Wembanyama will attempt to burnish his growing legend in 40-minute increments.

Caitlin Clark has thrown up her biggest shot of the WNBA season. Unfortunately, it came in a comment on her Indiana Fever coach.
Indiana coach Christie Sides was the apparent target of Clark’s remark. Following Indiana’s 89-77 loss to the Seattle Storm on Friday night, Clark was asked about the best piece of in-game advice she received so far this season.
“Nobody gives me advice in game. I wish,” she responded.
That was red meat for the fans, who immediately took to social media to question Sides’ role on the team if she wasn’t giving advice.

Caitlin Clark is one of the top rookies in the WNBA when it comes to scoring and assists.
She’s also one of the league’s top trash talkers, if one coach is to be believed.
Las Vegas Aces head coach Becky Hammon said that while Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese gets a lot of attention for on-court chatter, Clark is right up there, too.
“Look, at the end of the day, (Clark and Reese) are really super-skilled. They’re fun to watch,” Hammon said Thursday night at a press conference with Sky head coach Teresa Weatherspoon. “And they jaw at each other, you know?
“No one talks more crap than Caitlin, too. I saw (Angel) and NaLyssa (Smith) get into it the other day. It’s a different generation. I think we talked subtly, but they be talking in your face, which is fine. Let them go. They’re big girls.

Caitlin Clark is not likely to be a member of the 12-player Team USA women’s basketball squad for the Summer Olympics, The Athletic reports, citing several sources.
The popular Indiana Fever rookie, the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer, is being bypassed in favor of veterans.
Reports indicate the roster will feature players A’ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner, Alyssa Thomas, Napheesa Collier, Jewell Loyd, Kelsey Plum, Jackie Young, Sabrina Ionescu, Chelsea Gray and Kahleah Copper.
The U.S. women should be a favorite in Paris.
Clark still has an outside chance of being on the squad as an injury replacement. She missed Team USA’s tryouts in the spring because of her Iowa team’s deep run in the NCAA tournament.
It’s been a rough introducion to the WNBA for Clark, who has been “hammered” in her own words, including one non-basketball foul by a Chicago Fever player.

After filing for bankruptcy, ex-NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown may lose his extravagant properties, including an $11.3 million home. The former Tampa Bay Buccaneers player owes almost $3 million to eight creditors, totaling nearly $24 million. According to the filing, Brown only has $50,000 in assets despite earning $80 million across his entire NFL career.
Brown, 35, currently owns three properties in his home state of Florida. His main home is an $8 million mansion in Fort Lauderdale boasting 18,000 square feet and 12 bedrooms. Brown’s mansion also features a home theater, gym, elevator and synagogue. In 2018, Brown said he wanted a synagogue on his property so his Jewish friends could have a space for prayer.
Brown owns two other properties, priced at $1.8 million and $2.9 million. All three of his homes come to a total of around $11 million. Brown also previously owned a mansion in Pennsylvania, sold in 2021.

ABC’s telecast of a weekend double-header involving four Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) teams drew some record numbers to the broadcast network.

The Indiana Fever’s season home opener at the Connecticut Sun was the most-watched Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) game on ESPN in history, the network said in a statement.
The game averaged 2.1 million viewers across ESPN 2 on cable and the streaming platforms ESPN Plus and Disney Plus. At its peak, 2.3 million households were tuned in to watch Caitlin Clark’s first-ever WNBA game.
ESPN said it was the network’s most-watched WNBA regular season or playoff game, surpassing a previous record held by the Phoenix Mercury and Connecticut Sun set in 2004.
Clark likely had a lot to do with ESPN’s success: A second game between the Phoenix Mercury and Las Vegas Aces grabbed just 464,000 viewers for the night.
Between the two games, ESPN grabbed an average of 1.28 million viewers, up 192 percent when compared to last year’s viewership average.

Women’s basketball interest is growing so fast, even the WNBA can’t keep up.

Caitlin Clark picked up where she left off in her college career. Playing in her first WNBA preseason game as an Indiana Fever guard, the all-time NCAA scoring leader hit a deep 3-pointer for her first bucket as a professional.
It was part of a night in which she scored a team-high 21 points in a 79-76 loss to the Dallas Wings in a preseason game. Despite the low stakes – Clark didn’t play much in the second half – she stood out in front of the sold-out crowd at College Park Center in Dallas.

Fans await the cast reveal for Dancing with the Stars Season 33, as each season brings various stars from acting, singing, social media, and sports.
Many sports stars have captured the coveted Mirrorball Trophy, now named the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy, in the late DWTS judge’s honor.
Rumors suggested the show’s producers wanted to score big by bringing basketball superstar Caitlin Clark in for the upcoming season.
Clark captured much attention throughout the college basketball season, and DWTS desperately wanted her as part of the cast.
However, an insider says despite them “bending over backwards” to get Clark on the show, she “respectfully declined.”
That was due to Clark having other things to focus on, including her basketball career, and she has her eye on a few shows on which she’d prefer to appear.

When millions of Americans came together to marvel at the stunning solar eclipse, we saw a rare moment of unity amid the darkness of a country torn apart by polarization. Bookending the same week? The release of action-thriller “Civil War,” now the number one film in America and A24 Films’ most successful release yet. Set against the backdrop of an imagined second American Civil War, the film follows photojournalists led by Lee Smith (Kirsten Dunst), as they capture the horrors of a failed country.
After previewing the film, I fixated on the plot’s open space left by writer and director Alex Garland. For audiences wondering what leads us to this point of no return, Garland deliberately shoots back with blanks, inviting us to fill in the rest.
I believe that it matters how we fill those gaps. Films of this magnitude, especially on a radioactive topic, set a narrative in our culture.

There are now numerous ways for Fever fans to watch the No. 1 overall pick’s rookie season.
Outside of a handful of NFL narratives, the biggest story in all of sports this season has been the ascendency of Caitlin Clark to the top of the women’s basketball and sporting worlds. Last week she was taken No. 1 overall in the WNBA draft by the perennial bottom-dwelling Indiana Fever, a move considered such a foregone conclusion that the league’s broadcast partners were already lining up to get the team's games in front of national audiences as much as possible this summer. The deal comes less than a week after basketball superstar Caitlin Clark was drafted by the Indiana Fever fresh from her captivating college basketball season.
Tegna stations in Indianapolis will offer a total of 17 games from the Indiana Fever this upcoming season. The games will bounce between Wthr and Walv-cd, Tegna said. Walv-cd is also carried on a full-power digital sub-channel of Wthr, and both stations are offered on cable TV platforms.
The Indiana Fever is owned by Herb Simon and operated through his Pacers Sports & Entertainment group. It is co-owned with the Indiana Pacers, the professional men’s basketball team.

Caitlin Clark can earn up to $500,000 during her rookie season, WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert has claimed in an effort to quell outrage on the No. 1 draft choice’s low base salary.
The former Iowa star will make just $76,535 in base salary from the Indiana Fever, part of a four-year, $338,056 deal with the team. When that was revealed, outrage ensued, as the base is much lower than a comparable NBA amount.
Victor Wembanyama, the No. 1 pick in last year’s NBA draft, signeda four-year, $55.2 million rookie contract, the largest possible deal under the NBA’s current labor agreement. That comes to roughly $12 million in base salary as a rookie.
Engelbert has now clarified that Clark will likely make far more.
“[For a] CEO, do you just put the base pay in there? No, you put their bonus, you put their stock options, you put everything,” Engelbert said at a CNBC Changemakers event, according to NJ.

Just days after President Joe Biden decried the wage disparity between female and male athletes, Whoopi Goldberg said on ABC’s The View that ESPN should “sweeten” its deal for the broadcast rights of WNBA games.
After pointing out the Clark will make an initial annual salary of $76,535 as a player for the Indiana Fever, Goldberg then noted, “The entire Fever payroll is $1.2 million. That is less than the minimum salary for a single NBA player with a year’s experience.”
The women players, Goldberg continued, “have the headlines, they have the fans, they have the viewers, when the hell are they going to get paid?” Noting that ESPN and ABC are both part of the “Disney thing,” Goldberg added that ESPN “should have kissed this deal by taking care of all of the WNBA and given them enough money for a bump up because you know you have another deal to make.

Caitlin Clark proved to be one of the most-watched sensations in all of sports this year, catapulting her Iowa Hawkeyes college team to the widely-watched national championships. After smashing scoring records in the NCAA, she was drafted as the number-one pick by the WNBA’s Indiana Fever. Her reported salary? She’ll make $76,535 for her first year, $78,066 for the second year, and $85,873 for the third. She also has a fourth-year option of $97,582. Whether she gets that rumored eight-figure endorsement deal with Nike or not, the difference between her salary and that of newly drafted NBA players is staggering and had many folks, up to and including President Joe Biden, speaking out against the pay disparity. The ladies of The View had particularly strong insights on the matter since ABC Studios, where they work, is affiliated with ESPN, which recently elevated its broadcast coverage of the sport, through parent company Disney.

President Joe Biden stepped into the conversation around WNBA first draft pick Caitlin Clark’s sub six-figure annual salary, saying that the pay gap between the women’s and men’s leagues reflect a larger discrepancy in opportunities.
“Women in sports continue to push new boundaries and inspire us all,” the president said Wednesday on X/Twitter. “But right now we’re seeing that even if you’re the best, women are not paid their fair share.”
“It’s time that we give our daughters the same opportunities as our...
