Cinematographer Mandy Walker has made history as the first female recipient of the Australian Cinematographers Society (Acs) Milli Award.

Prior to receiving the ceremony’s highest award, Walker became the first woman in 102 years to win the prestigious American Society of Cinematographers’ Best Feature Film Award, and was nominated for both a BAFTA and Academy Award for her work on “Elvis.”

“I’m incredibly proud and honored to be the first woman to win this award,” said Walker. “Here’s to all the other glass ceiling breakers who will come after this.”

Sony Pictures Classics announced Randall Park’s directorial debut “Shortcomings” is set to premiere in theaters on August 4.

Randall Park’s directorial debut, which had a mostly positive reception from its Sundance premiere, will launch theatrically on August 4.

“Shortcomings,” starring Justin H. Min, Sherry Cola and Ally Maki, will make its New York premiere at the Tribeca Festival next month in the Spotlight Narrative section.

Based on the Eisner-winning cartoonist Adrian Tomine’s graphic novel of the same name, “Shortcomings” also features Tavi Gevinson, Debby Ryan, Sonoya Mizuno, Timothy Simons and Jacob Batalon. Tomine, a frequent contributor to The New Yorker, adapted the screenplay and is executive producing.

The picture concerns a struggling filmmaker who spends his days managing an arthouse theater. When his girlfriend moves to New York for an internship, Ben is left to ponder what he really wants out of life.

Setting the stage for the year in cinema, the 2023 Sundance Film Festival will take place January 19-29, both in person in Utah as well as virtual viewings kicking off five days into the festival. Ahead of next month’s festivities, the festival has now unveiled its features lineup, which features 99 films.

The film will also feature Tavi Gevinson (HBO’s “Gossip Girl”), Debby Ryan (“The Resort”) and Jacob Batalon (“Spider-Man: No Way Home”). Sonoya Mizuno (“House of the Dragon”) and Timothy Simons (“Veep”) round out the supporting cast.

Roadside Attractions Acquires Robert Dugoni’s Spy Thriller ‘The Eighth Sister’ For Television
Indie feature studio Roadside Attractions, a Lionsgate sister company, is continuing its push into scripted television, acquiring Robert Dugoni’s bestelling and critically acclaimed spy thriller The Eighth Sister to develop as a series.

Set in present-day Us and Russia, The Eighth Sister, the first book in a planned series, follows Charles Jenkins, a long-retired African American CIA case-officer who is re-engaged by his former bureau chief to run a top-secret mission in current day Moscow, only to find himself running for his life and possibly betrayed by his own country.

Roadside Attractions’ head of television Jennifer Berman will executive produce the project, along with Roadside Co-Presidents Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff. Dugoni will also serve as an executive producer on the series. The Eighth Sister was published in April by Thomas & Mercer.

The Mummy and Trust star is to front The Professionals, based on the Jeff Most-produced film, alongside Smallville’s Tom Welling, Wonder Woman’s Elena Anaya, John Wick 3’s Saïd Taghmaoui, Inglourious Basterds’ Ken Duken, Force Majeure’s Lisa Loven Kongsli and Das Boot’s August Wittgenstein.

Independent film distributor plans to broaden its push into the television business.

Roadside Attractions has bought prize-winning drama series pilot script The Golden Cage as part of what the Us independent film distributor says is a broadening push into television.

Roadside Attractions Television has acquired one-hour drama pilot “The Golden Cage.” Described as a female-driven Wall Street thriller, the project hails from writer Oskar Nordmark.

Darryl Taja (pictured) will serve as executive producer through his Epidemic Pictures. Adam Rodin will also exec produce. Nordmark created the series and will serve as co-executive producer. Roadside Attractions’ Howard Cohen, Eric d’Arbeloff and Jennifer Berman will also Ep.

The series is set in New York and details the lengths an ex-con will go to both camouflage her past and ensure a top spot for herself in the competitive world of high finance on Wall Street. Wall Street has been the setting for several of Roadside’s most notable feature releases, including Arbitrage and Margin Call.

Nordmark is represented by Epidemic Management and attorney Mark Stankevich. Epidemic’s in-house attorney, Sandra Brathwaite, negotiated Taja’s deal. Rodin is represented by CAA and Ziffren Law.

Taja (The Perfect Guy) will executive produce through his Epidemic Pictures banner, along with Adam Rodin (Extant). Nordmark will serve as co-executive producer. Roadside Attractions’ Howard Cohen, Eric d’Arbeloff and Jennifer Berman will also serve as Executive Producers.
