There have been so many engrossing dark TV series that took viewers on mind-bending journeys and truly played with their heads. While modern television has embraced much darker and more sinister stories in recent decades, it takes a truly great show to bury underneath the surface of a series narrative and deliver philosophically rich stories that strike a chord for their deep, probing themes that leave a mark on viewers consciousness well after the credits have rolled. A thought-provoking series that can play with viewers' expectations often marks the difference between a simply good show and a truly great one.
Many of the best TV shows of all time were dark in nature and did not underestimate viewers' intelligence with deeply complex and intricate narratives. Imagine being in a school where every move you make is watched, not just in the classroom but even outside of it. Coming from an all-girls school myself, I know it very well. The rules were strict, especially when it came to interacting with boys. Even at events where boys from other schools were present, we had to follow a strict code—how to sit, how to dress, how to talk—always polite, never show any romance, or there’d be consequences. It might sound like something from medieval times, but that was our reality. Now, Netflix’s new series Chastity High dives into a similar world. It introduces us to Asuran Academy, a school that recently went co-ed after years of separating boys and girls. But with this change came even stricter rules, laid down by a principal Ikushima, who was dead serious about maintaining discipline. No romance, dating,...

One of the largest webtoon publishers in South Korea, Kakao Entertainment, revealed that it has identified the owners of the world's biggest manga and webtoon piracy site.
The site was not fully identified but begins with the letter 'M.' According to a report by Kbs on Dec. 1, 'M' has illegally distributed about 20,000 Japanese manga and 7,000 Korean webtoons, estimated to be costing the comics industry 3 trillion won every month (~$2.2 billion). This figure would be comparable to Amazon's net losses for the entirety of 2022 ($2.9 billion). Kakao says it has identified three executives of 'M,' including its founder, and that it will work alongside the Japanese manga industry to bring legal action against all offenders. "If we identify the operator, we will be able to take civil and criminal action against each individual for violating copyright law, which will likely lead to a more fundamental solution to the problem of illegal distribution,...

Season 1, Episode 1 of The Yuzuki Family's Four Sons, "Yuzuki's House," premiered on Crunchyroll on Oct. 5, 2023 to widespread complaints over the quality of the anime's subtitles. Crunchyroll temporarily took down the episode on Thursday in response.
Two employees at Anime News Network posted about the incident on X (formerly Twitter), writing, "Woof, not sure what happened here but Crunchyroll's subtitles for The Yuzuki Family's Four Sons are straight-up unprofessional. 4 out of 5 sentences don't have punctuation, overly literal translation that mixes up possessives. It's a mess."

While having a new batch of seasonal anime is typically an exciting for everyone within the community, some fans have recently voiced concerns with the handling of the subtitles and translations in one of the new series currently streaming on Crunchyroll, The Yuzuki Family's Four Sons. The anime adaptation of the popular shojo manga by Shizuki Fujisawa began regularly broadcasting on October 5, which is when many anime fans picking up the series noticed something strange about the quality of the subtitles, and took to X – formerly Twitter – to voice their concerns.
In a post by Yami ReiRei (@LossThief on X), the creator discussed the poor quality subtitles, outlining through a series of screenshots a distinct lack of punctuation and an overly literal translation. The post garnered enough attention to then open up a discussion alleging that the episode may have been machine translated. While there is no official confirmation on whether this is true,...

The harem genre used to be entertaining yet impactful. Even though it was mostly leaning towards fan service and romance, titles like The Quintessential Quintuplets really changed the game. However, instead of giving fans the same standard of stories and characters, the harem genre went downhill with its highly exploitative representation of female protagonists and plots. Besides Tqq, only a handful of harem anime have given above-average performances, which include Masamune-Kun Reverenge R, In Another World With My Smartphone, and The Café Terrace and its Goddesses.
TenPuru is the latest anime to join the ranks of the most underwhelming harem shows of 2023. Fans had high expectations from the series because of its resemblance to Tqq and comedic approach. However, TenPuru fell flat in more ways than one and highly disappointed the audience due to its underwhelming plot and basic characters. It's obvious that harem shows are meant to be more entertaining than anything,...

Everyone loves a good romance, but nothing beats platonic love and support. Positive female friendships are the oft-unsung hero of a good story. Shonen anime particularly has many examples of amazing friendships between guys, but shonen and shojo have supportive relationships between girls and women that last through maturity and life changes.
Bonus points are definitely awarded if the female friendship passes the Bechdel test: at least two women talk to each other and discuss something other than a man. Best friends are one of the closest consistent relationships a person can have in their life, and they make for great deuteragonists or well-crafted side characters in anime.

Among the top shojo romance anime, Kimi Ni Todoke has remained a beloved series next to Toradora, Fruits Basket, and Ouran High School Host Club. For years, these anime have remained uncontested series in the anime community, especially among fans of high school romances. However, this past Spring season of anime has given the top shojo series a run for their money, especially Kimi Ni Todoke.
This past Spring season, Skip and Loafer has become a stand-out among Shojo fans, despite carrying themes and tropes seen before and not even being a Shojo series. In hindsight, its seinen demographic might be why the anime has found such success in its first season. It is certainly not the typical shojo anime. Since its debut back in April, Skip and Loafer has been compared to the beloved Shojo classic anime Kimi Ni Todoke. They both share similar uplifting and wholesome vibes as well as similar character dynamics.
