Tributes are pouring in for Bill Turnbull after it was announced that the veteran broadcaster had died from prostate cancer on Wednesday (31 August).
The former BBC Breakfast presenter’s family confirmed on Thursday (1 September) that Turnbull had “passed away peacefully at his home” after being diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2017.
Piers Morgan honoured Turnbull as “one of the best broadcasters in Britain” in a tribute posted on Twitter.
His tweet read: “Rip Bill Turnbull, 66. One of the best broadcasters in Britain, and such a smart, funny, warm & generous-spirited man.
“Fought his illness with typical stoicism, courage and humour. Bill made presenting live TV look so effortless, which was his great talent. Such sad news.”
Turnbull was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2017, and had taken a leave of absence from his radio show Classic FM to focus on his health in October last year. However, he returned to the show last month.

The family of Bill Turnbull paid tribute to him as they announced his death yesterday, saying the BBC and Classic FM presenter made them laugh every day and that they were “immensely proud” of him.
The 66-year-old, who co-hosted Breakfast for 15 years, died at home in Suffolk almost five years after being diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer.
A special programme will be shown in his honour on Friday, the BBC said.
“The last week of his life was very special: the whole family was with him and we shared some wonderful moments,” wife Sarah McCombie said in a statement read out on air by Naga Munchetty.
“Even though he was often in pain, Bill was dignified and brave throughout, and he was his usual determined self right to the very end.

Rapman, real name Andrew Onwubolu, has hit out at UK multiplex chain Vue over its banning of his film Blue Story.
The cinema said it had taken the measure after “25 significant incidents,” following an initial widely reported incident involving a machete at a Birmingham site on Saturday (November 23) during the film’s opening weekend.
Speaking on BBC Breakfast this morning, Rapman questioned the motives behind the decision: “Vue say that there’s been a number of incidents but where’s the proof, the evidence?”
“The one incident that they’re taking about was on camera, we live in a camera generation, anything happens the youth are going to film that. How come we haven’t seen any footage of the rest of these incidents?” He continued. “I feel like that was something [Vue said] to cover their decision, which already wasn’t justified because the incident had no connection to Blue Story.

You wouldn't expect the BBC to ever have to apologise for Alan Titchmarsh swearing on live TV, but it sort of happened this morning (June 23).
BBC Breakfast said sorry to TV viewers after Titchmarsh mentioned "bastard trenching". However, he wasn't speaking of his hate for trenching, it is a legitimate gardening term.
"I don't double dig every day - digging to two spades' depth. There's another name for it, and it sounds terrible, but it's called bastard trenching," he said. "By the end of it you realise that's a very fitting name for it."
Host Louise Minchin later said: "Thank you very much. And I just have to offer our apologies for the language used in the last couple of minutes. Apologies if people were offended."
"Oh no, no," Titchmarsh replied. "It's a term in a gardening book. I shan't repeat it but it's not offensive at all."

Speaking about auditioning for the show, Toksvig said: "They made two pilots, one with me and one with Angus Deayton.
"I was told by the producers that they preferred my version, but the channel decided they couldn't have a woman in charge."
Toksvig also revealed how the decision "made [her] feel inadequate and question whether [she] was really up to it".
She went on to speak about the tabloid scandal involving Deayton in 2002, saying: "I thought Angus was very good and he's an extremely nice chap... but I would not have been caught with either prostitutes or cocaine,...

A BBC Breakfast presenter accidently released a box of mosquitoes live on air.
Louise Minchin was presenting a segment on insect bites during the show yesterday (August 15) when she offered to put her hand into the box of insects.
However, when she tried to put her hand in she accidentally ripped off the front of the container, releasing the creatures into the studio.
The guest on the show, Dr James Logan from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, quickly moved the box and reassured everybody that there was no danger, while Minchin tried to control her laughter for the rest of the segment.
She said: "Me and mosquitoes have a very bad relationship.
"I have actually knocked myself out trying to kill a mosquito."
The video has currently amassed over 62,000 views since being put on YouTube yesterday.

Jodie Prenger and Lee Nelson have made it to the final of Let's Dance for Comic Relief.
Prenger was the first to make it through, having topped the public vote with a routine to the 1986 Cameo hit 'Word Up', in which the actress dressed as the funk group's frontman Larry Blackmon.
Judges Arlene Phillips, Greg James and Lee Mack then had to choose between Vanessa Feltz, who danced to Cher's 'If I Could Turn Back Time' in leotard and fishnet tights, and Nelson, who was joined by Britain's Got Talent stars Twist & Pulse for a hip-hop spin on Tchaikovsky's 'Swan Lake'. The trio eventually decided to save Nelson.
Newsreaders Ore Oduba and Sonali Shah and ventriloquist Nina Conti received the fewest public votes and were automatically eliminated.
Oduba and Shah performed to the Outkast track 'Hey Ya', while Conti teamed up with her puppet Monk for a gorilla-themed routine...

Chris Hollins has made his final appearance on BBC Breakfast. The morning programme's sports correspondent appeared on the show for the last time, having originally joined in 2005. He told fellow hosts Bill Turnbull and Louise Minchin: "I'm actually very touched, my first Ob (outside broadcast) was in the Isle of Wight. It all went wrong, I should have known then what was going to happen in the next seven years." He joked: "I've gained a couple of chins over the past seven years." Talking about his favourite moments on the show, he said: "I've covered two fantastic (more)...
