History from the ground up — the stories you didn’t learn, the people you never knew, shaping history in ways you never expected.
Launching on 20th March 2025, Journey Through Time uncovers the overlooked, forgotten, and untold sides of history — from hidden stories to new angles on events we thought we knew. Co-hosted by British-Nigerian historian and BAFTA-winning filmmaker David Olusoga and American cultural and literary historian Sarah Churchwell, Chair of Public Humanities at the University of London, the show explores the past from the ground up.
Each episode weaves the monumental with the personal. “We don’t just tell you what happened in the past; we want to show you what it felt to live through it,” says Co-host Olusoga. “Like the programs I make on TV, this show will uncover the sorts of history that didn’t take place in parliament or palaces. Yellowstone has already created two spinoff series, 1923 and 1883, but there still doesn't seem to be enough bingeable shows set in the West. Luckily, Paramount+ has a hidden gem on the streaming service, which should give 1923 fans an extra show to watch. The series, called Lawmen: Bass Reeves, follows a historic U.S. marshal as he arrests outlaws west of the Mississippi River. The show was produced by Taylor Sheridan, creator of Yellowstone and 1923, and is quite similar to the rest of Sheridan's work.
The Series Is Based on a True Story
Lawmen: Bass Reeves is set in the late 1800s, in the area west of the Mississippi River. The series is based on historical figures from the time, including Bass Reeves and Judge Isaac C. Parker. The miniseries covers a large portion of Bass Reeves' life, starting with his role in the Civil War and showing most of his...

Taylor Sheridan tells stories that stick with you.
His shows take us into parts of American life that don’t usually make it to TV.
From Yellowstone to Lioness, he doesn’t just entertain — he shows us struggles and realities we might not see otherwise.
(Paramount+/Screenshot) Giving Voice to Unseen Worlds
Sheridan’s stories feel real because they’re rooted in truth. Yellowstone is a perfect example: the Dutton family fights to hold onto their Montana ranch, but it’s about more than just land.
It’s about identity, heritage, and keeping a way of life alive as the world changes around them. The prequels, 1883 and 1923, go back to show how that legacy was built through grit and sacrifice.
Then there’s Landman. Sheridan takes on the oil business, digging into the complicated lives of the people who keep the world running.

It’s official – Paramount+ has renewed the critically acclaimed crime drama series, Mayor of Kingstown, for a fourth season. Creators Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon have teased the possibility of the show’s return before, but the platform has finally confirmed the news nearly four months after Season 3 ended. This also marks the return of Jeremy Renner after his near-fatal accident with a snowplow in 2023.
The third season of Mayor of Kingstown ranked as the No. 1 series on Paramount+ throughout its run. A gripping exploration of power struggles, crime and social challenges in the fictional town of Kingstown, Michigan, it followed Mike McLusky (Renner), a power broker, as he navigates the complexities of maintaining order among rival factions. This included the arrival of a Russian mob presence and an eventual drug war that tested his resolve. Season 3 concluded with an explosive finale that saw a familiar face from McLusky’s...

Westerns may not be as popular as they once were but, once in a while, television presents an acclaimed and riveting series to prove the genre is still alive and kicking. In the current TV era, people will think of Yellowstone and its various spin-offs as the new standard for Westerns in the medium. As famous as that show is, it has had occasional rough patches, particularly some behind-the-scenes drama that affected the plot.
Nevertheless, the Western genre still has a vast library of shows that take place either in the past or modern times. These specific shows refuse to become stale, offering exciting moments and considerate character work in each episode. They could have lasted a single season, like Firefly, or many seasons, such as Justified. Regardless of its length, the important thing is that it's hard to find an episode that would be considered "horrible" in these Western shows.

You know that feeling when you stumble upon a creator who just gets it? That’s Taylor Sheridan for you. Over the past few years, he’s basically become the king of modern Western television, turning out hit after hit faster than a quickdraw contest. What makes Sheridan’s shows so special isn’t just their gritty authenticity or stunning cinematography – it’s how they manage to capture the essence of America’s evolving identity, from its dusty frontiers to its gleaming skyscrapers.

And boy, has Sheridan been busy. Since Yellowstone first saddled up in 2018, he’s created a small empire of interconnected shows that explore everything from historical epics to contemporary crime dramas. His universe has grown so vast that it’s getting harder to keep track of all the gems (and occasional rough stones) in his collection.

Most of Taylor Sheridan's TV shows have benefited by casting prominent movie stars in their leading roles, and Landman will continue that trend. Billy Bob Thornton's casting in Landman signals that it will be high quality and have serious star power, and he seems like a perfect fit for his complex character. Thornton has worked in television before, and Landman should continue his streak of making high-quality shows.
Taylor Sheridan has made use of an extremely clever casting trick for most of his TV shows, and his newest series, Landman, is set to continue that trend in the best way possible. Sheridan has become one of the most prolific and successful writers in Hollywood over the past decade, and it was not simply a stroke of good luck. The last major role of Donald Sutherland, who died Thursday at the age of 88, was on the Paramount+ limited series Lawmen: Bass Reeves, headlined and executive produced by David Oyelowo.
The film and TV icon played the imposing Judge Isaac Parker (aka “Hanging Judge”) on the highly rated Western, which told the story of Bass Reeves (Oyelowo), the first African American Deputy U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi River.
Following Sutherland’s death, Oyelowo spoke about sharing the screen with the renowned Hollywood veteran.

For some 10 years, British-American actor-producer David Oyelowo has nurtured his obsession with the legendary post-Civil War Deputy U.S. Marshall Bass Reeves — long considered an inspiration for the Lone Ranger, with his white horse and Native American sidekick. Others had tried to make movies about him. Morgan Freeman, for one, spent some three decades pushing the project forward, to no avail. Always, there was resistance to centering a project on a Black lawman.
“You simply cannot avoid the question of race,” said Oyelowo at his spacious home in the San Fernando Valley. “Because arguably, the most, if not one of the most beloved genres, certainly, in American cinema is the Western. The narrative in our business, ‘Black doesn’t travel,’ ‘Black is niche,’ ‘Black is not global,’ therefore, does not warrant the level of budget.”

David Oyelowo plays the title character in “Lawmen: Bass Reeves,” the true story of a man who escaped enslavement and went on to become one of the first U.S. Deputy Marshals. While there is no shortage of stories from the 1860s and 1870s, there are only four known images of Bass Reeves.
So, for the Paramount limited series, a team of artisans worked to tell the story with as much authenticity as possible while only using those four photos as a visual reference.
“What David wanted to show on camera was the growth of him and the difference in his hair. But for me, it was showing the transformation of his skin — the aging process without prosthetics — showing him from a young man in his 20s to an older man,” said makeup department head Vonda Morris.
Morris’ secret weapon to Oyelowo’s aging transformation was Peter Thomas Roth’s skin tightening strips.

Almost a decade after playing Martin Luther King Jr. in “Selma,” David Oyelowo delved further back in time in American history to shine a spotlight on another figure, Bass Reeves. On the Paramount+ series “Lawmen: Bass Reeves,” the acclaimed actor steps into the shoes of this little-known real-life character and portrays him from the days of his enslavement through the late 1870s, when he has established himself as one of the first Black Deputy U.S. Marshals in the nation. It is a performance of such range and emotional nuance that Emmy voters could very well recognize him with his third nomination next month.
It is not a coincidence that Oyelowo decided to inhabit these two important men from different centuries. As Oyelowo recently shared in an interview with Gold Derby, “I really enjoy the challenge of taking someone or something that the audience thinks they know and bringing depth,...

It’s been 10 years since David Oyelowo made his U.S. breakthrough portraying Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in “Selma.” Playing the awe-inspiring civil rights leader was an opportunity for the British-Nigerian actor to live up to his surname, which translates to “a king deserves respect.”
Oyelowo has been reflecting on that time in his life a lot more lately, thanks in part to “Becoming King,” a documentary directed by his wife, Jessica Oyelowo, that captures the seven-year journey to bring “Selma” to the big screen.
“It was a big year,” he says of 2014. “There was no way you could know the sheer amount of things that would happen, because at the beginning of it, nothing was happening. ‘Selma’ felt dead. I was in the middle of shooting ‘A Most Violent Year,’ having a good time with that, but just feeling in a state of limbo and then—”

Near the end of the miniseries Lawmen: Bass Reeves, David Oyelowo’s titular character is told something all too familiar to many unsung real-life heroes: “No one’s gonna ever know, but you made history today.”
“You can just imagine how many people from marginalized communities that is the truth for,” he says. “People who very much had a real hand in building this country, and whether it’s their history not being taught … or that their contribution to history hasn’t been valued in the same way, which is why getting this show made was an obsession.”
That obsession took the form of Yoruba Saxon, a talent-led production company Oyelowo created with his wife Jessica in 2014, though his desire to produce actually came from his “accidental experience” of helping to put together Ava DuVernay’s Selma years before. “I didn’t realize those moves that go on to lead...

“It’s very, very prideful and it was very special for all of us making it,” reflects Damian Marcano on the experience of directing three episodes of “Lawmen: Bass Reeves.” As a child growing up in Trinidad, he and his grandfather would watch “The Lone Ranger” together and, when approached about joining the Paramount+ series, he was “very shocked to find out that he was actually the inspiration for what I had watched portrayed by a white actor,” referring to the influence of the real-life Bass Reeves (David Oyelowo) on American pop culture. Reeves was one of the first Black U.S. Deputy Marshals, and the director is glad for the opportunity not only to “retell these stories with the correct lens,” but also to show “a character of this skin color, an African man, formerly enslaved man” who “gets to do the ass-kicking.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Star and executive producer David Oyelowo and Lawmen: Bass Reeves creator, showrunner and executive producer Chad Feehan said Reeves’ family values were what made him stand out. Oyelowo plays Reeves, a U.S. Marshal after the abolition of slavery.
“The way in for a global audience should be not just appealing to the sensibility of people who love westerns but the family,” Oyelowo said at Contenders TV. “Essentially a Black family which is also something you never see in this time period. As we discussed this, we felt the universal element was going to be the work-life balance as something that everyone can relate to.”
Oyelowo said that Reeves was always trying to get back to his family after his arrests. Reeves’ family values also influenced one of the show’s most memorable antagonists, Esau Pierce (Barry Pepper). Feehan said Pierce represents the antithesis of Reeves.

For some audiences, nothing beats a good Western featuring beautiful landscapes, epic cowboy shootouts, and profound narratives. Western films have been around for over a century, dating back to the early 1900s, with one of the first Western features, The Great Train Robbery, released in 1903. Over the years, hundreds of these films have been made, some of which have become iconic while others have been commercial failures.
Even in modern cinema, Western films continue to provide a thrilling experience. While there are a few Westerns on major streaming platforms such as Netflix and Prime Video, Tubi, a free ad-supported streaming service, offers them in abundance. This is partly due to the streamer's consistent addition of new Westerns every month. With that in mind, here is every Western film coming to Tubi in March 2024.

Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone and its numerous spin-offs and prequels, including 1923 and 1883, have quickly dominated television. While his stories have covered everything from modern crime families to Westerns to military special operations, his latest project alongside showrunner Chad Feehan has proven to be a fascinating story in its own right. Lawmen: Bass Reeves has all the hallmarks of a Sheridan Western, but the true story of the life of Bass Reeves is so dramatic and fascinating on its own that it needs no cinematic embellishment at all to make it compelling.

Nightingale's fantasy world may not seem like it has modern weapons, but you can get a gun and other firearms if you obtain certain blueprints. The various Realms you can visit with your character introduce new quests that offer item schematics from unique worlds. Crafting the right Card will give you a chance to visit a land whose people can teach you how to create a gun of your own.
Before you can begin to hunt down gun blueprints, you need to have access to the Abeyance Realm through biome Cards. The first Card choice made in Nightingale determines which Fae Realm's environment dominates your world's terrain and structures. This "Home Realm" you choose cannot be Abeyance, but you should choose the Forest biome to shorten the steps it takes to reach a world with firearms.

Dennis Quaid (Lawmen: Bass Reeves) is slipping into the world of a serial killer who used a smiley face as his calling card for Paramount+’s Happy Face. Emmy nominee Quaid will star as the Happy Face Killer in the streamer’s new drama, inspired by the killer’s daughter Melissa Moore’s autobiography, Shattered Silence, and her Happy Face podcast.
Emmy nominee Annaleigh Ashford (Welcome to Chippendales) was previously announced to play Melissa. Filming is expected to get underway this spring, with Paramount+ targeting a 2025 premiere for the eight-episode season.
“Happy Face for Paramount+ jumps off from Moore’s true-life story. Happy Face (Quaid) is an incarcerated serial killer who also is Melissa’s (Ashford) once-beloved father. After decades of no contact, he finally finds a way to force himself back into his daughter’s life,” reads Paramount+’s synopsis.

“The need for me to get my job right is incredibly intimidating,” David Oyelowo has said about his recent role in the hit series Lawmen: Bass Reeves. Not to worry: The actor is gripping and authentic as a former slave who develops incredible marksmanship skills when he’s drafted into the Confederate Army. After Reeves escapes, he becomes an officer of the law and a fighter for justice. We caught up with the busy Oyelowo (he’s also starring in Role Play this month with Kaley Cuoco) to find out which streaming shows have hit the bull’s-eye with him. David Oyelowo (‘Lawmen: Bass Reeves’) on portraying ‘a man who really moved the needle historically’
“I couldn’t believe that a show or a film… in an expansive, big-scale, John Ford-ian way hadn’t existed,” recalls David Oyelowo when he was approached years ago about a project centering on the real-life frontiersman Bass Reeves, who was one of the first Black Deputy U.S. Marshals following the Civil War. The actor — who executive producers and stars in the title role of the Paramount+ limited series “Lawmen: Bass Reeves” — thought it was a “head scratcher” that nobody had adapted his story to the screen with the character in the leading role. Following the success of chaotic cowboy drama Yellowstone, co-creator Taylor Sheridan has been given an entire book of blank checks, and has cashed as many as he could manage in just five years. While his involvement in these TV projects wavers, sometimes drastically, his brand has always been on point.
With over half a dozen shows now within the House of Sheridan, let’s take a look at how each program measures up against the rest of the catalog.
7. Lawmen: Bass Reeves
The story of real life American folk legend Bass Reeves (David Oyelowo) was originally supposed to be a larger cog in the Yellowstone prequel machine, but as it continued to evolve, it became its own standalone project, which works both for and against the show. Part of the charm of the Yellowstone prequels for any Sheridan fan is getting to search for connections between the different generations of the Dutton family.
