Anora or Conclave? Mikey Madison or Demi Moore? Awards Magnet hosts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng make their final 2025 Oscar winner predictions with Gold Derby editor-in-chief Debra Birnbaum.
Sunday's Screen Actors Guild Awards kept things spicy in multiple categories. After claiming the Producers Guild of America, Directors Guild of America, and Writers Guild of America Awards, Anora was goose-egged at SAG. Worse, it lost the ensemble award to its closest Oscar rival, Conclave. The Vatican drama also has the BAFTA Best Picture prize under its belt, is basically locked for Best Adapted Screenplay, and might claim Best Film Editing too after its BAFTA triumph in the same category. Is that enough to take down Anora's guild trio for the Best Picture Oscar? Anora has already proven it can win — and beat Conclave — on a preferential ballot with its PGA victory. The only film to lose the Oscar with PGA, DGA,...

Did the BAFTAs change the Oscar race? Will Demi Moore rebound at the Screen Actors Guild Awards? Awards Magnet hosts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng discuss the BAFTAs and make their SAG predictions with Gold Derby editor-in-chief Debra Birnbaum.
The BAFTAs spread the wealth a bit on Sunday, with Conclave taking Best Picture and Brady Corbet (The Brutalist) taking Best Director, a week after Anora won the Producers Guild of America and Directors Guild of America Awards and reclaim its spot as the Oscar frontrunner. Anora was not favored to win either of those categories, but it still made out well across the pond as it won Best Casting and Best Actress for Mikey Madison, who upset favorite Moore (The Substance). Moore has the non-industry awards Golden Globe and Critics Choice under her belt, but the BAFTAs marked the first time the industry chimed in on the acting categories. After...

Can Anora win without Mikey Madison? Does the “vibrancy” of a character matter at the Oscars? Awards Magnet hosts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to answer your burning questions of the week.
After Anora collected prizes at the Producers Guild of America Awards and Directors Guild of America on Saturday, the Best Picture and Best Director Oscar races seem pretty secure for the Neon film, so all eyes are now on Best Actress and whether Mikey Madison can regain her frontrunner status. Demi Moore (The Substance) dethroned Madison from the top of the odds following her Golden Globe win, but as multiple listeners inquired, “How can voters award Anora without awarding Madison when she’s front and center of the movie?” Lots of Best Picture winners have triumphed without their leads, like Birdman and The Shape of Water, but three of the last four Best Picture champs had a lead win,...

How did Anora pull off its guild twofer? Awards Magnet hosts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng discuss Anora‘s winning weekend and make BAFTA predictions with Gold Derby editor-in-chief Debra Birnbaum.
Anora had a stellar Saturday, bagging the first two industry awards of the season — and two big ones at that: the Producers Guild of America Award for Best Picture and the Directors Guild of America Award for Sean Baker. The awards also came 24 hours after the film won Best Picture and nothing else at the delayed Critics Choice Awards. The PGA and DGA victories were not forecasted in the odds, though PGA was less of a surprise, but now as a result, the film has reclaimed the top spot in the Best Picture and Best Director Oscar odds. To quote a Best Picture-winning musical, the name on everyone’s lips is Karla Sofía Gascón. Awards Magnet hosts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to answer your burning questions of the week, most of which are unsurprisingly about the embattled Emilia Pérez star.
One listener wonders if Gascón’s resurfaced offensive tweets and her subsequent defiant statements have taken up so much oxygen that the other scandals of this Oscar season — Anora not using an intimacy coordinator, The Brutalist using AI, etc. — won’t have an impact on the race. But that also assumes the very offline Oscar voters were aware of those very online controversies in the first place. Gascón, on the other hand, has made her situation incredibly difficult to ignore. Another listener suggests Gascón might not even be invited to the Oscars.

Can Emilia Pérez recover from Karla Sofía Gascón‘s incendiary tweets and rogue press tour? Awards Magnet hosts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng discuss the unprecedented controversy with Gold Derby editor-in-chief Debra Birnbaum.
Unless you’ve been living under the rock since Thursday, Gascón’s unearthed offensive social media posts have turned the Oscar race upside down. This is not the first social media controversy in Oscar history, but instead of laying low after her apology, the Best Actress nominee has consistently put out statements, including doing an hour-long CNN en Español interview, in which she continues to defend herself and call out attackers. Emilia Pérez has since fallen from second to fourth place in the Gold Derby Best Picture odds (and will likely drop further), but can its Oscar chances be salvaged? And would even the film’s biggest fans want to vote for any aspect of it if...

Will Emilia Pérez be missing a key win to prevent it from capturing the Best Picture Oscar? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to answer your burning questions of the week on Awards Magnet.
Despite its leading 13 nominations, Emilia Pérez is second place in the Best Picture odds behind The Brutalist. Perhaps the thought process is that the musical is too divisive to win (even though the clear affection from the industry), but one listener cannot bring himself to predict Emilia Pérez for the top prize because it’s not likely to win Best Director or Best Adapted Screenplay (it’s in second in both categories as well). The Best Picture champ usually takes director or screenplay or both, and the last Best Picture champ to win neither was another musical, Chicago. But stats are not rules. Is it time for this to happen in the preferential ballot era?...

What has the edge in Best Picture? Can Fernanda Torres take down Demi Moore? Awards Magnet hosts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng make their first Oscar winner predictions in above-the-line categories with Gold Derby editor-in-chief Debra Birnbaum.
In the most unpredictable Best Picture race in years, a case could be made for six films to win Best Picture: Anora, The Brutalist (the odds-on favorite), A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Emilia Pérez, and Wicked. With 13 nominations, Emilia Pérez is leading the field and the online hate train, but we already know the industry adores the Netflix crime musical, which puts it in good position to win. But how will it perform on the Oscars’ preferential ballot? Could it reap a ton of No. 1 votes but not enough in the No. 2 and 3 spots? And which film could be the Spotlight of the year?

The delayed Producers Guild of America Awards nominations threw us all for a loop on Thursday with a surprise nomination for September 5 alongside the expected Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, A Real Pain, The Substance, and Wicked. Sing Sing, which remains in ninth place in the Best Picture odds, was Awol, a day after it collected three BAFTA nominations in all of its longlisted categories. The A24 drama’s run has been up and down all season, but is the PGA snub a death knell? Especially since September 5 has also underperformed?

How did Daniel Craig miss at BAFTA? Is A Complete Unknown coming on like a freight train? Gold Derby experts and editors Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng break down the 2025 BAFTA Awards nominations on Awards Magnet.
A week after scoring a surprise Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Best Actor for Queer, Craig was even more surprisingly Awol from BAFTA’s nominations list that has an extra sixth spot. Hugh Grant (Heretic) and Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice) made it in alongside the predicted Oscar top four of Adrien Brody (The Brutalist), Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), and Ralph Fiennes (Conclave). How could the erstwhile Bond be excluded on home turf? That was always a possibility since Heretic is a greater box office success, and said home turf enormously liked The Apprentice, which converted three of its longlist mentions into nominations. Queer? Craig was its sole longlist showing.

Dear Joyce and Chris,
I really enjoy listening to your pod, and appreciate the mailbag episodes because so many listeners have questions similar to mine. Since I’m the lone cinephile in my family, it’s nice to know that others share my interest/obsession.
My question is about Amy Adams — though it could also be about Glenn Close. But I’m an Amy stan so… since Amy has six nominations and no wins, is it better for her to not be nominated in any given year when she has little chance of winning? Does just...

Why does it look like Kieran Culkin is set to steamroll the Best Supporting Actor Oscar race? Is Angelina Jolie a lock to get a Best Actress nomination? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to answer your burning questions of the week on Awards Magnet.
For the second week in a row, a listener is down on Culkin’s performance in A Real Pain and doesn’t get why he’s the Best Supporting Actor favorite. But as we all know, there’s a lot more that goes into a successful Oscar campaign than just the performance itself, regardless of how one feels about it, and some of that has to do with one’s competition as well. Meanwhile, another listener comes to Culkin’s defense while another listener floats the idea of A Real Pain pulling a Coda.

How did The Substance only show up in one category? Is Emilia Pérez going to convert all six of its shortlist mentions into nominations? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the 2025 Oscar shortlists snubs and surprises in this episode of Awards Magnet.
After a great showing at the guilds last week, followed by a surge in the Oscar odds, The Substance had a rough day Tuesday, only popping up in the makeup and hairstyling category, which was widely expected for its Monstro Elisasue prosthetics. It missed visual effects and sound — two vital components to the success of the Coralie Fargeat hit — as well as original score. This came on the heels of the film getting shut out of nominations from the Aacta International Awards, aka the Australian Oscars, earlier in the day. The Substance is obviously not out of it completely, but...

Hi Joyce and Chris,
I noticed a lot of Oscars prognosticators have recently moved “Conclave” to the top of their Best Picture rankings, including a narrow plurality of Gold Derby experts. I just saw the movie — how entertaining, hilarious, and surprisingly subtle. I was cracking up when they slammed the dead pope’s body into the back of an ambulance and flashed the title card. Does it have any chance of pulling off a “Coda,” “Spotlight,” or “Argo”-style win by becoming a consensus, down-the-middle crowd-pleaser? Or does it need more critical support? I think it...

What’s up with the Critics Choice Awards’s Best Director lineup? Is Timothée Chalamet running his Oscar campaign like a presidential campaign? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to answer your burning questions of the week on “Awards Magnet.”
Two years ago, Critics Choice had 10 nominees instead of its standard six. Similarly, when this year’s nominations were announced on Dec. 12, eight directors made the cut. Were there really multiple ties? Obviously no one knows the answer to that except those who tabulated the votes, but there is a certain pattern when Critics Choice has expanded beyond six slots in this category. But how many of its eight nominees will transfer over the Oscars’ field of five? Two years ago, despite 10 nominees, Critics Choice missed eventual Oscar nominee Ruben Östlund for “Triangle of Sadness.”

Will “Emilia Pérez” dominate the Golden Globes? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng make their first 2025 Golden Globe winners predictions in this episode of “Awards Magnet.” Plus: An interview with New York Film Critics Circle member Jordan Hoffman.
“Emilia Pérez” scored a record-breaking 10 nominations, but how many will it actually win? A reminder that “Barbie” led the field last year with nine and “only” walked away with two prizes, including the inaugural Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Award. It lost Best Comedy/Musical Film to “Poor Things.” Could the same fate befall “Emilia Pérez”? It has competitive rivals in five-time nominee “Anora,” which hit every category it needed to hit, and in four-time nominee “Wicked,” which missed Best Director and Best Screenplay but is a blockbuster smash. On the drama side, “The Brutalist” leads with seven bids, but could the well-liked “Conclave” upset anywhere?

Where in the world is Denis Villeneuve? And Danielle Deadwyler? And Marianne Jean-Baptiste? How big of a boost did “Emilia Pérez” get? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng dissect the 2025 Golden Globe nominations in this episode of Awards Magnet.
Several films underperformed in Monday’s nominations, most notably “Dune: Part Two,” which earned just two bids for Best Drama Film and Best Original Score. Villeneuve, who was nominated by the Globes three years ago for the first “Dune,” was surprisingly Mia in Best Director, which featured two female nominees in “The Substance’s” Coralie Fargeat and “All We Imagine as Light’s” Payal Kapadia. What gives? At least the film made the top category, unlike “Sing Sing.” The A24 drama only received one bid for Colman Domingo, missing Best Drama Film and Best Supporting Actor for Clarence Maclin, two widely predicted nominations. The snubs, combined with those of Deadwyler and Jean-Baptiste,...

Can Cynthia Erivo win the Golden Globe? And is she this year’s… America Ferrera? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to answer your burning questions of the week on Awards Magnet.

There’s a new frontrunner in Gold Derby’s Oscar odds for Best Production Design: Nathan Crowley for “Wicked”
The English artisan has broken his tie with Patrice Vermette (“Dune: Part Two”) to claim the No. 1 position on our chart for the upcoming 2025 Oscars. Welcome to Awards Magnet! Same show, new name. Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng kick off the inaugural episode with their 2025 Golden Globe nominations predictions.
Last year, “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” led the film field with nine and eight nominations, respectively. If any film comes close to those hauls this year, it might be “The Brutalist,” which is predicted to nab seven bids — and it won’t get the additional Box Office and Cinematic Award nomination that Barbenheimer received for obvious reasons. And with many of the Oscar hopefuls competing in comedy/musical — “Anora,” “Emilia Pérez,” “Wicked,” “The Substance” — how will voters fill out the “open” slots in Best Drama Actress? Plus: Can Sebastian Stan score double nominations?
See Experts slugfest: ‘Maria,’ ‘Queer,’ and their Oscar potential
On the TV side, “Succession” dominated nominations last year with nine. That’s probably not going to be replicated this...

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week’s topic: Best Supporting Actor, where a top five has firmed up.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Black Friday and while the rest of the world recovers from Thanksgiving dinner by scouring online shopping deals, we’re dutifully typing about the Best Supporting Actor race. It’s not even Dec. 1, but I’m ready to call this one the 2024 version of last year’s Best Supporting Actress race. As you remember, that field was dominated by Da’Vine Joy Randolph once critics groups and industry bodies started giving out statuettes, and not even the presence of two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster turning in one of her best and most enjoyable performances in years could stop the Randolph train from hitting the Oscar stage.

Is “Wicked’s” color grading that bad? Will Kate Winslet‘s friendly endorsements amount to anything? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to answer your burning questions of the week.
“Wicked’s” desaturated look, especially compared to the Technicolor pop of “The Wizard of Oz,” has been a point of grievance since the first images dropped. And the discourse has not subsided since the movie’s been seen (and Jon M. Chu‘s viral explanation of it also hasn’t exactly helped). But maybe there’s a more technical reason why “Wicked” look the way it does that doesn’t have to do with color at all — because there are colors in the movie.

Meanwhile, Winslet has been hitting the campaign trail for “Lee” — and not alone. She’s got the support of...

The Best Limited/Movie Actress race at the 2025 Golden Globes has had the same two frontrunners all season long: Jodie Foster (“True Detective: Night Country”) and Cate Blanchett (“Disclaimer”). But there’s a brand new challenger in the third place position in the form of Cristin Milioti (“The Penguin”). Can she pull out a victory when the 82nd annual Golden Globes air on Jan. 5, 2025, on CBS?
Foster, Blanchett, and Milioti are expected to be joined by Sofia Vergara (“Griselda”), Naomi Watts (“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”), and Nicole Kidman (“The Perfect Couple”) in this year’s nominations lineup, per our combined odds. Foster recently won the Emmy for “True Detective: Night Country, with Vergara and Watts being co-nominees. Blanchett, Milioti, and Kidman star on new programs that will be eligible at next year’s Emmys.
“The Penguin” is HBO’s take on the classic DC Comics “Batman” villain, with Colin Farrell playing the titular role.

Will Oscar voters sing the praises of “Maria? Will “Queer” be Daniel Craig‘s Oscar breakthrough? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss this week’s new releases and more.
Pablo Larraín‘s film trilogy about famous 20th century women will conclude on Wednesday with the limited release of “Maria” (it hits Netflix on Dec. 11). Angelina Jolie has earned strong reviews for her turn as opera legend Maria Callas and sits in second place in the Best Actress odds, which would continue Larraín’s streak of netting a nomination for all of his leading ladies. But could she actually be snubbed as people like Cynthia Erivo and Demi Moore continue to build momentum in stronger and buzzier titles? Like “Jackie,” which earned three bids, and “Spencer,” which received just the the one for Kristen Stewart, “Maria” is not expected to be a huge player,...

Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! I feel like this week’s column might be… popular. “Wicked” is out in theaters now, riding a wave of pre-release hype that hasn’t been seen in these parts since “Barbie.” Fans are fanning, stans are stanning, and I’ve got Ariana Grande winning Best Supporting Actress. We knew this would happen once you planted the seed, “Inception”-style, that typical Best Supporting Actress winners from musicals are more like Grande’s performance than what Zoe Saldaña does in “Emilia Pérez.” So, of course, I’ve made the swap — Ariana fans, tweet at me! — and while I’m always reactionary, it seems I’m not alone.

Will “Wicked” be more popular with the Oscars’ acting branch than we think? Could the brouhaha over Sebastian Stan and “Actors on Actors” help him? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to answer your burning questions of the week.
It’s “Wicked” mania this week as the long-awaited film hits theaters and continues to rise in various categories in the Oscar odds. Ariana Grande is in fourth place in Best Supporting Actress and Cynthia Erivo is in seventh place in Best Actress. But could its other supporting players coattail? Jonathan Bailey is in 11th place and Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh is way down in 32nd. Plus: Are the musicals subplots underdeveloped?

Will Glicked be the next Barbenheimer at the Oscars? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss “Gladiator II” and “Wicked” as the the double bill finally hits theaters this weekend.
“Gladiator II” has some big sandals to fill, coming 24 years after the original “Gladiator” won five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe, out of 12 nominations. But the Ridley Scott sequel is currently in 10th place in the Best Picture odds. Is it being underestimated or will it actually miss the top category like another recent follow-up to a blockbuster that tasted Oscar success, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”? That film scored four below-the-line nominations and a supporting bid for Angela Bassett. “Gladiator II” is predicted to get into several crafts categories and supporting actor for Denzel Washington. Scott, who’s still seeking his first Oscar, is also in seventh place...

Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! You’re no doubt riding on the high of the news that Conan O’Brien will host this year’s Oscars, a decision that seems absolutely perfect and immediately raises my interest in the ceremony on March 2, 2025. But we’re not here to type about Conan. Instead, our focus this week is on the fellas in the Best Actor race. The remains the most static of our acting races — lacking both the depth of field and loud stan armies of the Best Actress race that we typed about last week. When we did our ridiculously early 2025 Oscar picks in March, we both picked Ralph Fiennes, Colman Domingo, and Daniel Craig as potential Best Actor nominees.
