Bobby Miller at an event for The Master Cleanse (2016)

Bobby Miller

You Can Now Dive Into This 2019 Underseen, Eerie, Comedic Dark Fantasy Horror Movie for Free
Image
No matter what approach a film takes to showing someone struggling with their mental health, almost all have the same core message: battling your demons is never easy. This internal conflict is shown in many different ways with each portrayal impacting their audience to varying degrees, though few movies take it as literally — or as horrifically humorously — as Bobby Miller's The Cleanse. Following a hapless man desperate to change his luck, the film sees him join a suspiciously cult-like "self-help group" and begin facing the worst parts of himself in a way that no viewer could have expected. This plot is hilariously uncomfortable, with the film using humor to cope with its sadder elements in a way that many real people do today, yet is also shockingly poignant.

Horror Highlights: 8 Found Dead, The Harbinger, The Barn Part II
Image
8 Found Dead: "Stuck in a pandemic, Travis Greene and Jonathan Buchanan stumbled upon the story of 8 Found Dead while spitballing ideas at their local coffee shop.

Using several real-life characters and situations from Travis' life, Jonathan crafted a story around the inherent drama of being held hostage by conversation, a cue taken from Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf (1966) - which, along with Death Trap (1982), Funny Games (2007) and The Strangers (2008) served as inspiration for the filmmakers.

The next step was choosing a cinematographer. and the obvious choice was their friend Ryan Valdez. His unique style had always stood out and seemed perfect for 8 Found Dead."

Synopsis:

"Two couples drive to a secluded house in the desert for a weekend getaway, each with their own baggage, expectations and secrets. Upon their arrival, they are met by two strangers, claiming to have rented the house as well.

What starts out as a “simple...

Critters Attack! To Premiere On Syfy This Saturday
The Critters franchise is getting a significant update this year through Shudder’s Critters: A New Binge and now Syfy’s Critters Attack! The fifth feature-length film in the series, which originally ran from 1986 to 1992, is making its network premiere on Syfy this weekend after a Blu-ray and streaming launch over the summer. While not a classic by any standards, the film should still provide nostalgia for fans of the property.

Critters Attack! was shot in South Africa, doubling for small-town USA, and is separate from the generally unloved Critters: A New Binge series that ran on Shudder this year. Furthermore, Critters Attack! is only loosely tied to the original four films, acting more as a soft reboot with some winking nods to past events than a conventional sequel. The main connection to the original Critters is actor Dee Wallace, who we interviewed this summer about her role in the Syfy picture.

‘Critters Attack!’ Review: Longtime ‘Critters’ Fans Will Get What They Want [Fantasia Film Festival]
Bobby Miller at an event for The Master Cleanse (2016)
Bobby Miller’s Critters Attack! honors its meager franchise traditions, and your interpretation of that statement depends on your level of adoration of low-budget puppeteering. My reaction to the Crites’ latest feeding frenzy is similar to my reaction to Phantasm: Ravager: it has minuscule funding, blatant attempts at nostalgia recreation, and purposeful “so bad it’s good” vibes which […]

Fantasia 2019: ‘Critters Attack!’ Review
Stars: Jack Fulton, Jaeden Noel, Ava Preston, Dee Wallace, Tashiana Washington | Written by Scott Lobdell | Directed by Bobby Miller

All Drea (Tashiana Washington) wants is to get into a good college, but for now, she’s stuck making deliveries for a local sushi restaurant. One night, after her little brother Phillip (Jaeden Noel) witnesses meteors plummeting to Earth, one of her co-workers is attacked by hungry alien furballs with sharp teeth and big appetites. Yes, the rolling, ravenous critters are back, and soon Drea, Phillip, and two kids she’s babysitting (Ava Preston and Jack Fulton) are running for their lives. They’re also trying to protect an injured friendly alien they come across along the way, but every place they flee to becomes the site of a critter massacre.

I’m not going to lie, I went into Critters Attack! with a mix of trepidation and excitement. On the...

Fantasia 2019 Review: Critters Attack!, Among The Most Fun Franchise Rejuvenations In Years
The Crites are back at Fantasia 2019 with the world premiere of the fifth feature in the Critters franchise, Critters Attack!, from the writer/director of the 2016 festival hit The Cleanse (Aka The Master Cleanse), Bobby Miller. One of the strangest franchises around, Critters has had a recent renaissance with a re-release on home video from Shout! Factory of the original four-film series, and the Shudder original series, Critters: A New Binge. While the series opened to a lukewarm response, I'd be willing to bet that old school creature feature fans will be much more enthusiastic about Critters Attack! Fresh out of high school, Drea is struggling to keep her spirits up after having been rejected from her school of choice...

Critters Attack! Actress Dee Wallace Reveals Why She Returned to the Franchise
Critters (1986)
As some of you fellow horror movie fans out there might already know, this summer an all-new Critters movie is headed our way on digital and Blu-ray starring the original film's actress Dee Wallace (E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial). And today Wallace spoke a bit about what enticed her to return to the franchise all of these years later for director Bobby Miller's Critters Attack!.

"I was so happy when they sent me the reboot of Critters. My first question was is this going to be CGI? And they said no, [they] were going to use a lot of the original design of the puppets. It's all going to be puppets. And I went, 'oh, let me read the script.' I liked the script, and I liked my part in it - she's a real ball-buster - but my first concern was if this was going to be CGI. Because in a film like that,...

Exclusive Interview: Scream Queen Dee Wallace Talks Iconic Career, Dolls And More
A scream queen in every sense of the words, Dee Wallace’s name has become synonymous with the horror genre. With leading roles in Stephen King adaptation Cujo, cult classics Critters and The Howling, as well as a career-defining role as the mother in E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Wallace has been combining shrieks of fear with buckets of blood and tons of fun for years.

Her latest film, Dolls, jumps in on the summer of the killer toys and follows an alcoholic writer (Thomas Downey) and his rebellious daughter (Trinity Simpson) as they isolate themselves in an attempt to recover after the mother’s (Elise Muller) extra marital affair. But what they don’t know is that the three dolls staying in the attack have a sinister – and murderous – past.

I recently had the chance to speak with Ms. Wallace about her upcoming film, as well as her iconic career, and...

Inspired by the film series from the '80s and '90s, Critters follows 20-year-old Drea (Tashiana Washington), who reluctantly takes a job babysitting for a professor of a college she hopes to attend. Christian Sloan, Bzhaun Rhoden, Joey Morgan, and Stephi Chin-Salvo in Critters: A New Binge (2019)
Critters Attack! Trailer: Dee Wallace Returns to Battle the Krites
Christian Sloan, Bzhaun Rhoden, Joey Morgan, and Stephi Chin-Salvo in Critters: A New Binge (2019)
The first trailer for Critters Attack is here. The little deadly creatures have been away from the pop culture landscape for nearly three decades now. However, in the modern age of Hollywood, everything old is new again. As such, this particular franchise is getting revived in a big way this year as we're not only getting the recently revealed Critters: A New Binge series over on Shudder, we're also getting this brand new movie, which brings back original franchise star Dee Wallace.

It's a trailer that should delight fans of the series. It starts off with a familiar premise, as the little creatures crash land on Earth and quickly begin devouring unsuspecting humans. Dee Wallace seems to be playing a role similar to that of Jamie Lee Curtis from the most recent Halloween, waiting and preparing for these aliens to return. Based on what we see here, she's more than ready for them.

Apparently SyFy Secretly Shot a New Critters Movie with Dee Wallace
Last week the first trailer was released for a new sci-fi/horror comedy series called Critters: A New Binge, which is coming to Shudder. Now, we learning that the SyFy Channel secretly shot a new Critters movie based on director Stephen Herek’s 1986 cult film.

According to JoBlo, the project has already finished production. It was shot in South Africa and it was directed by Bobby Miller (The Cleanse). The best part of this is, the original film’s lead actress Dee Wallace is also said to star in the film! She hinted at her involvement with the film in an interview with Bionic Buzz, which you can watch below.

There are no details about the new Critters movie, and there were a bunch of production photos posted on Instagram, but many of those photos have since been removed after word got out.

The original 1986 movie centered on a family...

New Critters Movie Wraps Shooting, Dee Wallace Rumored to Return
Stephen Herek in Professeur Holland (1995)
The lovable little carnivorous creatures from director Stephen Herek's 1986 horror-comedy Critters have been getting a lot of love recently and I for one am not complaining. First, there is Shudder's Critters: A New Binge series coming next month, which we all know about by this point in time.

But let's not forget that SyFy is also shooting a new Critters movie, which may or may not star Dee Wallace. And speaking of the latter, today we have word that the new movie has wrapped principal photography in South Africa.

Cinematographer Hein de Vos (Tremors: A Cold Day in Hell) shared a batch of vague behind-the-scenes images from the filming of his new Critters movie that revealed February 6th was the last day of filming - and if you look closely you can see the infamous ball-o-Critters getting ready to rock and roll down an epic flight of stairs. Not only that,...

Johnny Galecki at an event for Breaking Upwards (2009)
Johnny Galecki Talks About Facing Inner Demons in ‘The Cleanse’ (Exclusive Video)
Johnny Galecki at an event for Breaking Upwards (2009)
Johnny Galecki promises there will still be some laughs in his new movie “The Cleanse,” but the “Big Bang Theory” and “Roseanne” star tells TheWrap that this fantasy goes deeper into the universal human struggle to “kill your inner demons before they kill you” than his current TV sitcoms.

Written and directed by Bobby Miller, “The Cleanse” stars Galecki as Paul, a man who struggles immensely with social anxiety and decides to go on a retreat that promises to cleanse one’s inner demons.

Joined by three others, he is instructed on the retreat by their guide, Lily (Anjelica Huston), to drink a special cleansing potion when he arrives.

Also Read: Johnny Galecki on 'Roseanne's' Embrace of Politics: 'That's What Families Argue About' (Exclusive Video)

But after the potion triggers a sudden bout of sickness, Paul and the others discover that the retreat’s promise was quite literal, as they cough up small demons that are the embodiment of their deepest flaws as human beings.

“I don’t want to put out the misconception that it’s a slasher film,” Galecki told TheWrap. “It’s a bit of a comedy and a bit of a love story too and that’s one of the things I loved about it when I read it.”

“The Cleanse” is in theaters and available on VOD now.

See more of Galecki’s thought on the film in the clip above.

Weird First Trailer for Indie Film 'The Cleanse' Starring Johnny Galecki
"We all have our demons." What the heck is this? Vertical Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for a very weird indie film titled The Cleanse, formerly known as The Master Cleanse when it first premiered two years ago at the SXSW Film Festival. Described as a "darkly humorous, weird, and soulful fantasy that examines the inner demons in all of us", the film is about a heartbroken man who attends a spiritual retreat, only to discover that the course releases more than toxins and traumatic experiences. Johnny Galecki (from "The Big Bang Theory") stars, with a cast including Anna Friel, Oliver Platt, Kyle Gallner, and Anjelica Huston. I actually really like the concept of this - I'm curious to see how he deals with his ugly "inner demon" and cleans it up. Might be cool? Or maybe not after waiting two years for a release. We'll see. Here's the...

Crowdfund This! Bobby Miller's End Times Is A Comedy About Death And Squirrels.
Following his debut feature The Master Cleanse, acclaimed indie oddity Bobby Miller is returning to the world of shorts with his upcoming End Times - a film Miller describes as a surreal and absurd short film about death. And if you're familiar with either The Master Cleanse or Miller's previous Sundance selected short Tub, then you know he's not kidding on those descriptions. When my step-dad passed away in 2011, I wrote a funny, bizarre short film called End Times about a man who finds a dying squirrel in a park and has a comedic existential crisis. But, I was so focused on getting my first feature film, The Master Cleanse made that I made excuses for myself not to make the short. While finishing...

6 upcoming non-mainstream films to watch out for
Matt Edwards Sep 22, 2016

Here are some upcoming movies that might be hard to track down, but are well worth the effort of doing so...

Den of Geek, last month, attended the London FrightFest film festival to indulge in five days of genre films and social anxiety (our favourites).

You can only see so much of the line-up, due to the boring constraints of time, physics and human biology, but we saw a lot of films, a few of which we really need to tip you off about. Partly because you won’t want to miss them when they do get a general release in the UK, but also because they’re probably going to need your support.

Here are six upcoming genre films to keep an eye out for.

The Master Cleanse

Written and directed by Bobby Miller

Former app designer Paul (John Gallecki) is listless. His life has gotten...

Fantasia 2016 Interview: Bobby Miller on The Master Cleanse
Of all the films that I've seen at Fantasia this year, The Master Cleanse from writer-director Bobby Miller ranks among the weirdest and most unique. I have to admit that the first 20 minutes of the film didn't draw me in, but after that, Whoa! Things get weird, cute, squishy, sad, and heartwarming, sometimes all at once. As Miller's first feature, that's an amazing feat to pull off. His previous short film, Tub, played Cannes, Sundance, and SXSW. You can watch it here.   The Master Cleanse stars Johnny Galecki and Anna Friel (in addition to Anjelica Huston and Oliver Platt) as broken people on a retreat to cleanse their bodies and become more whole in body and spirit -- with some quite unexpected results. If you...

The Master Cleanse (2016)
SXSW 2016 Interview: Johnny Galecki and Kyle Gallner Talk The Master Cleanse (Exclusive)
The Master Cleanse (2016)
The gripping and distinct encounters and connections people experience throughout their lives often times form and shape their ideals, self-perception and interactions. People often hold deeply onto the personal baggage that has informed their current personalities as a comfortable and familiar security measure. But allowing those increasingly unconventional feelings linger prevents anyone from forming, and maintaining, meaningful relationships and personal growth. That essential idea is presented in the new comedy-drama-thriller, ‘The Master Cleanse,’ which was written and directed by first-time feature filmmaker, Bobby Miller. ‘The Master Cleanse’ follows Paul (Johnny Galecki), who was recently left at the alter, and seems destined and content to now wander through life without a [ Read More ]

‘The Master Cleanse’ SXSW Clip: Who Knows What Evil Lurks In A Clogged Drain?
The Master Cleanse (2016)
Here’s a clip from The Master Cleanse, which is described as “a trippy and fantastic journey that examines how we deal with the things that weigh us down in life.” Here we see Johnny Galecki finding more than he expected when trying to fix a clogged drain. First-timer Bobby Miller wrote and directed the film, which premieres Sunday in the Narrative Spotlight section at SXSW and asks the question: Given the opportunity to literally face your demons, what would you…...

2016 Sundance Film Festival 75 Predictions List: An Introduction
Whether you are a filmmaker, or one of the Sundance programmers whose task it is to identify the films that make up a line-up, it is indeed the most wonderful time of the year. The 32nd edition of the Sundance Film Festival kicks off on January 21st with Park City and Salt Lake City. Two decades back, Steven Ascher and Jeanne Jordan’s Troublesome Creek: A Midwestern was the Grand Jury Prize winner in the Documentary section while Todd Solondz’s Welcome to the Dollhouse beat out the likes of Nicole Holofcener’s Walking and Talking, Stanley Tucci and Campbell Scott’s Big Night, Mary Harron’s I Shot Andy Warhol and Alexander Payne’s Citizen Ruth for the Grand Jury Prize dramatic.

As per our tradition here on the site and as we all get ready for the festival, we like to propose an overview of the films we...

Dandy Going Darkly through America!
Dandy Darkly's Trigger Happy! Written and performed by Neil Arthur James Directed by Ian Bjorklund Under St. Mark's Theater, NYC October 29-31, 2015

Trigger Happy!, storytelling performance artist Dandy Darkly’s newest work, is a mesmerizingly entertaining, dark-toned foray into social criticism, a post-mortem on a still-living patient: America. The themes Mr. Darkly selected for his autopsy are in the media on a daily basis. The opinion page in The New York Times, Salon, and the Huffington Post supply daily missives about damaged U.S. soldiers returning from perversely unfocused wars, our cult of celebrity, gentrification neutering a once vibrantly inclusive social scene, and how political correctness police act to straightjacket open social discourse. Mr. Darkly's richly detailed, outrageous, and metaphoric tales examine these themes with an exactitude whose impact leaves our conventional media eating dust -- and his audience breathless with both awe and laughter.

Exclusive: The Master Cleanse Poster Releases More than Toxins
Today, we’re pleased to bring you an exclusive look at The Master Cleanse poster. The film is “the story of a group of people who attend a spiritual cleansing retreat, only to discover that the cleanse releases more than everyday toxins and traumatic experiences...” The press release describes the picture as a dark comedy, and I think that’s the way to make this premise work. Cleanses are a joke that don’t work and come with serious side effects. May as well make a monster a side effect. Check out the poster below, which was designed by Phantom City Creative’s Justin Erickson (hopefully, companies will continue the trend of hiring artists to do posters). Bobby Miller’s feature directing debut is currently in post-production, and stars Johnny Galecki, Anna Friel, Oliver Platt, Anjelica Houston, and Kyle Gallner. Xyz Films is currently shopping the film around Cannes. For more on the film: letsgetpure.

2015 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Max Landis’ Me Him Her
For someone who was ultra transparent during production, it’s almost as if Max Landis has placed a self-imposed gag order or the more likely scenario, simply didn’t really need to rush his directing debut in post production when we consider his sizeable workload. Backed by Big Beach Films – the prod co. with a winning formula and streak of Sundance comedies such as Little Miss Sunshine and Safety Not Guaranteed, 2015 should be a banner year for Landis name in the film stratosphere as it’ll include a whopping trio of penned items in Paul McGuigan’s Frankenstein, Nima Nourizadeh’s American Ultra, Paco Cabezas’ Mr. Right and finally, the sexual identity non-labeller comedy Me Him Her (we had on the radar last year) that sounds like a cozy fit for Park City. Worth noting, this features the work of cinematographer Ross Riege (The Kings of Summer).

2015 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Bobby Miller’s The Master Cleanse
After more than a decade of working in the short form (this includes the 2010 Sundance hit Tub – see below), Bobby Miller landed the attention getting cast of Johnny Galecki, Anna Friel, Kyle Gallner, Oliver Platt and the splendid Anjelica Huston for his feature film debut. The film world is full of garbage comedy-horror genre items and in short supply of standout items. The Master Cleanse went into production this past July/August — here’s hoping that this is a worthy pilgrimage towards enlightenment and is both unique and stunning in concept and design.

Gist: When Paul (Johnny Galecki) is left at the altar by his fiancé and loses his job, he quickly deteriorates into a depressed and meaningless existence. In order to get his life back on track, he signs up for a three-day cleanse retreat sponsored by the creator of ‘The Master Cleanse’, only this cleanse releases something far...

2015 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: J. Davis’ Manson Family Vacation
With only hope, a dream and one writing credit to his name (SXSW short film Kevin), J. Davis lassoed fellow low-budget filmmakers Linas Phillips (Bass Ackwards) and Jay Duplass (Baghead) and placed them in brotherly love roles. A family reunion type pic with a set of backdrops like no other, having raised a successful round of startup funds in late 2013 via Kickstarter, Manson Family Vacation didn’t drop in ’14, so we’re expecting this low-budget laugher to easily squeeze into the early ’15 fest circuit . It’ll need major funny bone to go with the freaky title to convince Sundance programmers.

Gist: Nick Morgan is a successful lawyer who’s devoted to his wife and young son. His adopted brother Conrad is a wayward soul who shows up in Los Angeles unannounced. Although the brothers have never gotten along too well, Nick decides to show his brother around town. But as it turns out,...
