- He was replaced as Leicester City FC goalkeeper in 1967 by 17-year-old Peter Shilton, who would also succeed Banks as an England goalkeeper in the 1970s.
- He was a FIFA World Cup winner with England in 1966. He made 73 appearances for England as a goalkeeper between 1963 and 1972, which included appearances at two FIFA World Cups (1966 and 1970).
- He was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1970 Queen's Birthday Honours List for his services to Association Football.
- Alan Ball considered him to be one of England's five truly world class players in the 1966 World Cup winning squad. The others were Ray Wilson, Bobby Moore, Bobby Charlton and Jimmy Greaves.
- His save from the legendary Brazilian striker Pelé in the 1970 FIFA World Cup is one of the most famous in the history of the game. It featured prominently in all of the television news obituaries to Banks.
