  • Became the first African-American to win the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) Chmapionship, also making him the first African-American World Champion in professional wrestling history.
  • He was a professional wrestler who made the perfect archenemy for The Sheik (Edward Farhat, who was actually the promoter of the Detroit based "Big Time Wrestling"). They would travel to other territories and wrestle throughout the country. Contrary to their many legendary battles in the ring, they were, of course, very good friends.
  • He was a highly charismatic professional wrestler. He is credited for breaking the color barrier by becoming the first African-American wrestler to achieve major success in the business and even becoming very popular with the fans in those territories that were highly segregated.
