Dick Cavett Says John Cassavetes ‘Chewed Out’ His ‘Husbands’ Co-Stars After Infamous Talk Show Appearance: They Were ‘Total A***s’
Image
Dick Cavett is still miffed about a publicity stunt 50 years later. The iconic talk show host, who led his own eponymous series for decades, visited the Criterion Closet (in the below video) to reminisce about a few of his most beloved films — and most infamous moments on his series.

Cavett recalled how the cast of “Husbands” were some of the most “crappy” guests on “The Dick Cavett Show” in 1970. Actors Peter Falk, Ben Gazzara, and John Cassavetes, who also directed the film, appeared on Cavett’s show on September 18, 1970. The trio pretended to faint, stripped off their socks, and had a meandering discussion onstage. Watch it here. Apparently, it was so bad that Cassavetes preemptively blamed whether or not “Husbands” flopped in theaters on the talk show appearance.

“That’s the movie that these three guys came on and made total asses of themselves. You can find it online: ‘The...

Silje Evensmo Jacobsen in Un bonheur fragile - Une famille se réinvente (2024)
A New Kind Of Wilderness Photo: courtesy of Maria Vatne

Director Silje Evensmo Jacobsen's sophomore feature A New Kind Of Wilderness follows the lives of the Payne family, who have chosen to make their home on a farm in the bosom of the Norwegian forest. After Maria's death, Nik confronts the challenges of raising their three children, Ulv, nicknamed Wolfie, Falk, Freja and his stepdaughter Ronja, as a single parent. The life that he and Maria pursued for their children, living in harmony with nature and homeschooling, faces an uncertain future.

Jacobsen's 2021 feature début, Faith Can Move Mountains (Tro Kan Flytte Fjell), documents the tension sparked in the community of Valldal, a small Norwegian village, when Greek Orthodox nuns announce plans to build a monastery. Alongside the intimate reflections of her 2014 short film, Bestemors Hus, which explores the emotional connection a granddaughter feels towards her grandmother's house, a pattern is revealed.

A New Kind of Wilderness review – beautiful film of off-grid family shattered by bereavement
Silje Evensmo Jacobsen in Un bonheur fragile - Une famille se réinvente (2024)
When photographer Maria Vatne died in 2019, her family had to come to terms with not just the loss of a parent but a whole lifestyle, including their home

This sad and beautiful documentary from Norwegian film-maker Silje Evensmo Jacobsen tells a painful, complicated story, more complicated than even the film itself explicitly reveals. It’s a story that the director appeared to have chanced upon through following the blog of a brilliant photographer, Maria Vatne, who recorded her idyllic wilderness existence living on a farm in Norway with her British husband Nik Payne and their three home-schooled children, Ulv, Falk, and Freja, and an elder daughter Ronja, from Maria’s previous partner. But one blogpost from October 2018, titled A New Kind of Wilderness revealed that she had cervical cancer, and she died in 2019.

The film shows us the family coming to terms with their terrible loss and grief, particularly Nik.

Why Columbo Is So Beloved As A Detective Show, According To Peter Falk
Image
There's a lot to love about the classic detective series "Columbo," and over the years, people have tried to figure out exactly what has made it so darn watchable. Seriously, it's incredibly easy to turn on an episode of the series on streaming and end up losing a whole afternoon to hanging out with television's comfiest-dressed and most comforting police detective, Lieutenant Columbo. Played by Peter Falk, Columbo spends each lengthy episode solving a crime that the audience is already privy to, as each episode begins with the murder itself. Sometimes these murder sequences can be rather extensive, setting up characters and backstories and running for up to 30 minutes before Columbo himself even appears.

In a retrospective from Peacock, archival interview footage with Falk reveals his opinion on why people loved "Columbo" so much, and it actually has more to do with those opening murders and less with Columbo or Falk.

Elaine May’s Women: In Praise of the Loser Brunette
Image
Amalia Ulman’s Magic Farm is in theaters beginning April 25. A New Leaf.Never have I seen one woman in whom every social grace was so lacking. Did I say she was primitive? Well, I retract that. She’s feral.—Henry Graham, of Henrietta, in A New LeafI have been dreading writing this essay because it means admitting to myself and to the world something very unfortunate: I am a loser brunette. It was 2017, and my then husband suggested we watch A New Leaf (1971) because there was a new Blu-ray restoration, which was exciting. But as I watched Walter Matthau as Henry Graham arrogantly reckoning with the fact that he had run out of money, making teary-eyed farewell visits to his Upper East Side tailor and racket club, I thought of the man sitting next to me and was shocked by the similarities. “He’s just like you,” I said to my husband,...

The Women's Cancer Research Fund (Wcrf), supporting the advancement of the world’s most promising breast cancer research, announced today that actress and activist Olivia Munn will receive the “Courage Award” at the organization’s flagship “An Unforgettable Evening” gala, taking place on Monday, April 28, at the Beverly Hilton, while three-time Grammy winners Little Big Town will perform.

Munn will be honored for selflessly sharing her ongoing breast cancer journey and, in doing so, inspiring countless women to take their health into their own hands and get screened for breast cancer. This year, the event will be hosted by comedian, actor and writer Whitney Cummings and will once again feature extraordinary cancer survivors and tributes to the memory of those impacted by the disease. Honorary Chairs will include Rita Wilson & Tom Hanks and Tom Ford; with Gala Chairs Jamie Alexander Tisch, Quinn Ezralow, Laurie Feltheimer; and Co-ChairsWallis Annenberg & Kris Levine,...

Peter Falk Almost Refused To Include One Of Columbo's Most Beloved Characters
Image
Famed detective Lieutenant Columbo, played to perfection by Peter Falk, isn't exactly your average TV cop. He's a bit meandering and doesn't seem particularly beholden to many social norms, wearing a rumpled raincoat and carrying a cigar almost wherever he goes. Over each wonderful, lengthy episode of "Columbo" (they run around an hour and 40 minutes without commercials), the eponymous detective will solve the murder shown at the beginning of the story using his well-honed powers of perception, and for the most part he is the only recurring character on the series. Different guest stars appeared as new murderers and victims each week, with Columbo himself serving as the only connecting thread, with one small exception: Columbo's pet Basset Hound, Dog.

Beginning in season 2, Columbo occasionally had Dog pal around with him on various cases, serving as a kind of mostly-useless sidekick. Dog is good for sometimes getting the people Columbo...

Steven Spielberg's Columbo Episode Changed Peter Falk's Perception Of Television
Image
Before he was known for making blockbusters about sharks, aliens, and dinosaurs, Steven Spielberg had the honor of directing an episode of "Columbo." His contribution to the series, "Murder by the Book," is the first regular episode of the long-running drama following two successful TV movies, and it helped get the show off to a flying start. In fact, Peter Falk -- who plays the series' titular crime-solver –- was so blown away by Spielberg's directorial style that it made him rethink how television could be made.

As he once told "Pebble Mill at One" in an interview:

"I knew this guy was exceptional. The show with Steven Spielberg was the first time in my acting career that I did a scene in which I was unaware where the camera was. In television, the camera is always right there. And we did a scene, and he said 'Action,' and we started to shoot,...

‘Caddo Lake’ Review: Dylan O’Brien & Eliza Scanlen Caught Up In Head-Scratching Family Mystery In Paranormal Thriller Produced By M. Night Shyamalan
Image
M. Night Shyamalan certainly has been busy this year pushing out his signature brand of twisty thrillers. So far in 2024 we have had his daughter’s directorial effort, The Watchers, which he produced; the intriguing modest hit Trap, which stars another daughter and which he directed and produced; and now Caddo Lake, which is being heavily advertised as from “Producer M. Night Shyamalan.” Set for a streaming debut on Max starting Thursday rather than going theatrical like the rest of his feature output, the pic unmistakably fits right into his own filmography, even if he turned over writing and directing reins to the team of Celine Held and Logan George.

Actually this one went into production exactly three years ago under the title The Vanishing at Caddo Lake — while Shyamalan still was working his now-wrapped Apple TV+ series Servant, which happens to be a key credit for his filmmakers here...

Peter Falk Wasn't The First Choice To Play Lieutenant Columbo
Image
Some fictional characters are so intrinsically tied to the people who portrayed them that it's nearly impossible to picture anyone else in that role. Columbo, the disheveled detective who helped take down the bad guys on TV over three decades on the series of the same name, just couldn't be anyone but Peter Falk. That's like suggesting someone other than Alan Alda play the television version of Hawkeye on "M.A.S.H."! Dressed in an eternally-wrinkled, too-big trenchcoat and always chomping on a cigar, Falk brings both a unique appearance and performance to the character, looking and acting unlike any other cop on TV. Without Falk, "Columbo" may never have been successful, and it certainly wouldn't have been the same. Back when the series was first being developed, however, the people in charge had some very different performers in mind.

"Columbo" was created by writers Richard Levinson and William Link, who first...

‘Columbo’: 20 best episodes ever, ranked
Image
The late great Peter Falk was born on September 16, 1927, and his detective drama “Columbo” is as timeless as it is entertaining. In the whole of television history, few actors have been as identified with a single character than was Falk with Lieutenant Columbo, the eccentric, rumpled, cigar-chomping, trench coat-clad, implausibly wily Los Angeles Police Department homicide detective who always got his man. In the process, Falk and the producers revolutionized what a cop show could be.

It’s been more than a half-century since Falk began portraying the world’s favorite lieutenant as part of the rotating “NBC Mystery Movie” franchise on September 15, 1971. It would grow to become a global phenomenon originally across eight seasons (1971-78), then again sporadically from 1989 to 2003. The series itself would win 13 Emmys..

Burt Young, Who Played Paulie in ‘Rocky’ Films, Dies at 83
Image
Burt Young, who played Paulie in six of the “Rocky” films starring Sylvester Stallone, drawing an Oscar nomination for supporting actor for his performance in the 1976 original, has died, his daughter Anne Morea Steingieser confirmed to the New York Times. He was 83.

Roger Ebert gave Young his props for his performance in the first “Rocky” film: “And Burt Young as (Adrian’s) brother — defeated and resentful, loyal and bitter, caring about people enough to hurt them just to draw attention to his grief.” The New York Times — in an absolutely scathing, completely dismissive review of the film — nevertheless said: “Burt Young is effective as Rocky’s best friend, a beer-guzzling mug.”

Young’s temperamental, jealous but nonetheless loyal and caring Paulie Pennino was Rocky’s best friend — he would defend the Italian Stallion if someone insulted him. But he was a problematic friend who shouts at Adrian during her pregnancy,...

Peter Falk in Columbo (1971)
Peter Falk Loved Playing Unpretentious ‘Columbo’
Peter Falk in Columbo (1971)
Columbo was one of those shows that epitomized the 1970s — if you were young back then, you can still picture yourself watching it with your grandparents on their plastic-covered sofa with the volume too loud. You loved the sight of Peter Falk in his famous trenchcoat, And, of course, you were always impressed by the way he would catch the culprit at the end of the show. Fifty years later, the show is finding new audiences on streaming platforms — no doubt inspired by the Columbo comparisons mentioned in many reviews of the hit streaming series Poker Face. Falk, who won four Emmy Awards for playing the role, once talked to us about the qualities he loved most in the character. (Click on the media bar below to hear Peter Falk) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Peter_Falk_Columbo_.mp3 Columbo is currently streaming on Peacock and Amazon Freevee.

Happy Birthday, Peter Falk! 20 best ‘Columbo’ episodes, ranked [Photos]
Image
Saturday marks 96 years since the great Peter Falk was born (9-16-27), which strikes us as a great reason to revisit a detective drama as timeless as it is entertaining. We’re wishing him a Happy Birthday, even though he left us on June 23, 2011.

It’s been more than a half-century since Falk began portraying the world’s favorite lieutenant as part of the rotating “NBC Mystery Movie” franchise on September 15, 1971. Old-School Graphic Adventure Game ‘An English Haunting’ Announced [Trailer]
Algernon Blackwood
For those fancying a return to old-school point-and-click adventure titles, Postmodern Adventures’ An English Haunting looks to fill that niche. No relation to the Charlie Steeds film of the same name, the game is inspired by the works of horror authors such as M.R. James, Algernon Blackwood, and Arthur Machen, and is currently in development for release on Steam.

An English Haunting sees an enthusiasm for spiritualism gripping 1907 London. Séances and theatrical shows where spirits make contact with their living families are all the rage, and there are a legion of investigators trying to discover the secrets of the supernatural. Among them is Professor Patrick Moore, who is faced with a dilemma: he’s got 72 hours to prove the existence of the Great Beyond, or else his Metapsychic Investigations Department will be shut down forever.

Racing against the clock, with the help of a fake medium named Beatrice Shaw, he...

In the sports drama Air, directed by Ben Affleck, the story takes place in 1985, during the time of Nike’s emergence as a revolutionary change in sports footwear. Assassin Club Cast & Character Guide
Image
Assassin Club is an action movie involving a group of elite killers, and its actors and the cast of characters they play reflect the call for the best of the best. In the spirit of The Bourne Identity, Bullet Train, and John Wick but with a little Hunger Games thrown into the mix, Assassin Club follows a hitman who reluctantly has to defend himself against other contract killers sent to take him — and each other — out. It's a professional contest where one winner collects millions and keeps their life while the other six lose the game and their lives.

The movie is directed by Camille Delamarre, helmer of Brick Mansions and The Transporter Refueled, and stars a handful of familiar figures in the action genre. As with any ensemble compiled for a story of first-rate mercenaries, the actors cast in Assassin Club are varied in their appearance and talent. It's...

Ben Affleck’s Air Leads Right into Bizarre Origins of Space Jam Movie
Image
A little over a year after Ben Affleck mused he would never make a theatrically released movie again, and insisting he wanted to focus on non-franchise films for adult audiences, the filmmaker nonetheless enjoyed one of the happiest box office stories of 2023. To be sure, this past holiday weekend was dominated by yet another “IP movie,” as Affleck is wont to say, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. However, in the shadow of that film’s gargantuan $205.5 million across five days, Affleck’s own adult-skewing drama, Air, also dominated the court in its own league, grossing $20.2 million over five days.

Not bad for a movie that’s produced by one of the biggest streamers around, Amazon Studios, and which true to Affleck’s word wasn’t even originally intended to reach the big screen. In fact, Air didn’t pivot to a theatrical release until post-production when Amazon realized how well...

Sharon Stone prepared some remarks to offer in return for receiving the Courage Award on Thursday night during the Women’s Cancer Research Fund’s (Wcrf) An Unforgettable Evening fundraiser. But she didn’t seem to need any help in delivering a speech that, at times, had her in tears and ended with a standing ovation.
