Peter and Bobby Farrelly were complete unknowns in 1994 when they stormed multiplexes with the smash comedy hit "Dumb and Dumber." It was the third Jim Carrey movie of that year, and by far the funniest. With its unabashed gross-out gags (Jeff Daniels' explosive diarrhea sequence is a classic of the very low form) and aggressively silly shenanigans, the film ushered in a new era of buffoonish humor that made Jerry Lewis' work look like drawing room farces. (/Film ranks "Dumb and Dumber" as the Farrellys' finest effort to date.) The Farrellys then doubled down on their sickening shtick with the box office disappointment "Kingpin" in 1996, only to rise to putrescent prominence two years later with the raunchy blockbuster "There's Something About Mary."
While folks inside the industry were semi-familiar with the Farrellys as peddlers of comedy pitches, mainstream moviegoers were struck, well, dumb by their rapid ascent. So, those hungry...

The Netflix rom-com The Merry Gentlemen takes the typical Christmas movie blueprint and throws it out the window. Britt Robertson and Agent Carter alum Chad Michael Murray star in the film, which has a feel-good premise: successful dancer Ashley returns home to save her family's business. But there's an edge to the proceedings, as Ashley's plan -- and her budding relationship with local handyman Luke -- heats up very quickly.
Cbr spoke to Robertson and Murray about what drew each of them to The Merry Gentlemen. Robertson discussed what she loved about Ashley, while Murray detailed diving headfirst into the dance sequences required for the movie's all-male revue that gives the Magic Mike films a run for their money. Plus, what was it like to make a Christmas movie that was so atypical?

The Merry Gentlemen delivers an undercooked Christmas movie that struggles to make sense of itself and the humor falls flat. While Netflix is known for producing new movies and shows at a break-neck speed, it's fair to say that a lot of them feel well-thought-out and executed. The same can't be said for The Merry Gentlemen, which follows in the footsteps of hollow Hallmark Christmas movies that fail to tell a cohesive or engaging story.

The final scene of Fight Club has sparked more discussion than perhaps any other modern movie, constituting one of the most iconic endings in cinema. The ending of Fight Club explained a wealth of thematic depth beyond the film's infamous mind-bending twist. Based on the 1996 novel by Chuck Palahniuk, David Fincher's Fight Club combines a complex story with social commentary and an exploration of the toxic nature of modern society, which has led to serious analysis. Told from the perspective of its unnamed narrator, it details his life spiraling into anarchy after founding the titular club which builds to the iconic Fight Club ending.
The Narrator (Edward Norton) begins Fight Club's story as a disillusioned man struggling with insomnia. He meets the charismatic Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) and begins to live a more fulfilling life. However, Durden's exploits escalate, leaving the Narrator to resolve the resulting chaos. In the twist, Fight Club reveals Tyler Durden is a manifestation of the Narrator's inner conflict. David Fincher's Fight Club has become a defining piece of '90s cinema and an all-time greatest hit. Yet, Chuck Palahniuk's original novel offers a distinctly different take on the narrator's story. While both versions masterfully explore themes of masculinity, consumerism, and identity, they diverge in several significant ways. From altered character dynamics to completely different endings.
The journey from page to screen resulted in numerous creative decisions that reshaped Palahniuk's work, with the Fight Club creator even revealing some problems he had with the iconic Brad Pitt movie. Some changes were necessary adaptations for the visual medium, despite initial box-office struggles, while others represented more deliberate choices in how to tell this complex story in ways only David Fincher can.

There's a reason why Fight Club remains a cult classic even after more than two decades. The David Fincher film starring Edward Norton as the narrator and Brad Pitt as Tyler Durden has a massive plot twist at the end. It challenges every thought viewers have about the film up to this point, and the more viewers revisit the psychological thriller, the more questions they'll have rather than answers.
Fight Club is a rabbit hole because it's a film that features an unreliable narrator. Through the narrator's eyes, viewers are introduced to Durden and his fight club, or at least that's what they think is happening. The story is convincing enough, but if a narrator can't even trust his own mind, what can viewers trust? Fight Club's ending invites viewers to re-evaluate what they've seen. While at first watch, it might seem like the film is about a man...

"Star Trek" is a workplace drama first and foremost, and it took place on board the well-organized U.S.S. Enterprise, a space vessel carefully divided into necessary departments, offices, and workstations. The main characters were, by necessity, deeply professional, and tended to keep their upper lips stiff as they faced unusual spatial phenomenon or aggressive alien visitors. Very occasionally, one of the main characters would lose their cool, make a foolish decision, or have an unexpected freakout, but for the most part, level heads prevailed. Many love the central cast of "Star Trek" for their ability to remain capable under pressure, and it's hard to hate someone when we understand they're so good at their job.
There were many characters throughout "Star Trek," though, that never had their wits about them. Indeed, there were whimsical agents of chaos, whiny incompetents, and corrupt captains that felt counter to the egalitarian spirit of "Star Trek,...

Worf's Klingon heritage conflicted with his Starfleet duties, leading to touching moments like the bonding ritual with Jeremy. After Worf's mother's death, he bonds with Jeremy, who blames him, in a heartfelt and emotional episode of Tng. Jeremy's fate is never revealed after "The Bonding," as producers considered bringing him back but ultimately decided against it.
Lt. Worf (Michael Dorn) had another "brother" on Star Trek: The Next Generation, but he only appeared in one episode before being forgotten. As the only Klingon in Starfleet, Worf often struggled to reconcile his duties as a Starfleet officer with his Klingon culture. As Chief of Security on the USS Enterprise-d, Lt. Worf performed his role well and Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) often encouraged Worf to explore his Klingon heritage. Throughout Tng's seven seasons, Worf learned more about his Klingon family, eventually meeting his biological brother, Kurn (Tony Todd).

Writing "The Bonding" for St: Tng was a pivotal moment for Ronald D. Moore, setting the stage for his darker, character-driven work on future shows. Moore's focus on Klingon culture in Tng & DS9 laid the groundwork for his exploration of complex political and moral conflicts in Battlestar Galactica. Moore's impact on the Star Trek franchise cannot be overstated, as his scripts for Tng and DS9 reshaped Klingon lore and deepened the exploration of death and grief in the Trek universe.
Ronald D. Moore's first Star Trek script for Star Trek: The Next Generation hinted at the types of stories he would go on to write on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Battlestar Galactica. Following the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the USS Enterprise-d, Tng is Star Trek at its most optimistic. Shadowy corridors, truncated memories, haunted visions and a classic song set the scene for Kate Harpootlian’s directorial debut dance short Anyone Who Knows. Harpootlian had long envisioned the film in her mind’s eye set against Irma Thomas’ affecting timbre and upon finding the perfect location the rest of the production flowed naturally. Her choreography seamlessly matches the beats of the song whilst revealing an agonised tormented soul tortured by memories. Anyone Who Knows balances softer more nostalgic scenes with stark inner turmoil and skilfully evokes a lifetime of emotion and lives lived in its compact six minute runtime. Ahead of the film’s premiere on Dn today, we spoke to Harpootlian about why she feels less is more when choreographing movement, creating night and day in the same shot and her experience with notoriously complicated music licensing rights.
