The Different Types Of Sci-Fi Bugs In Starship Troopers, Explained
Image
Paul Verhoeven's 1997 sci-fi war film "Starship Troopers," based on the 1959 novel by Robert A. Heinlein, is a vicious satire that lampoons the aggressive, unthinking language used to bolster unjust, fascistic wars. The main characters are all young, attractive, empty-headed grunts inducted into a meaningless 24th-century intergalactic war with a distant species of giant intelligent arachnids.

The most notable feature of Verhoeven's film, however, is the propaganda videos that periodically fill the screen. Clear-voiced, boldly preachy short films announce to the audience that the war needs to be fought and that the government needs as many able-bodied youths as it can wrangle to feed them into the soul-hollowing combat machine. "The only good bug is a dead bug," people growl. Anti-bug sentiment is high.

Also, the film is a comedy. Screenwriter Edward Neumeier ("RoboCop") strikes a broadly cynical tone, playfully dissecting the American war machine and the politicians who spoke of war as a grand,...

Anne Hathaway Reveals What She Aimed to Achieve With Steamy Scenes in 'The Idea of You'
Image
Anne Hathaway opened up about what she hoped to achieve with the intimate love scenes in her new movie The Idea of You.

The 41-year-old actress stars in the romance alongside Nicholas Galitzine. During a recent interview, she and director Michael Showalter were asked if there were conversations about “how explicit” the love scenes would be.

She replied by revealing what became the “North Star” to their onset love scenes.

Keep reading to find out more…

Speaking to Variety, Anne explained how she looked to Robinne Lee‘s novel that inspired the movie for inspiration.

“Intimate acts! In the book, Robinne describes intimate acts with the most unbelievable energy. In their first physical sexual connection, Hayes brings Solène to orgasm while [she is fully] clothed,” she recalled. “That became our North Star in terms of expressing cinematic sex in a way that makes it about her pleasure, while also making the point that...

Anne Hathaway Says One Unique Sex Scene in ‘The Idea of You’ Became a ‘North Star’ for the Movie’s Intimacy: It ‘Makes It About Her Pleasure’
Image
Despite their rom com-heavy résumés, Anne Hathaway and actor-turned-director Michael Showalter had never met prior to collaborating on the May-December love story “The Idea of You,” which bows May 2 on Amazon Prime Video. Unless you count that one time at Beverly Hills’ Gucci Osteria, which in 2022 was the site of a dinner party to celebrate Jessica Chastain’s Oscar nomination for the Showalter-directed film “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.”

“I wanted to talk to Anne, but I was too embarrassed,” Showalter recalls of the soiree. “The path of least resistance is to just not talk to anybody.” Adds Hathaway with a chuckle: “I couldn’t figure out how to breach my wall of shyness.”

Months later, Hathaway conquered her timidity when she recruited Showalter to co-write and direct “The Idea of You,” in which the star of “The Devil Wears Prada” and “The Princess Diaries” portrays a 40-year-old single mother...

Country singer Walker Hayes was six years into his sobriety journey when he scored a surprise number-one hit, instantly giving him the biggest platform of his career, while also propping him up on the biggest stage to fall from.

That surprise hit was “Fancy Like,” Hayes’ humdinger of a single that touted the joys of a “Bourbon Street steak” at Applebee’s over a snappy beat and sing-along chorus.

Cathy Schulman says getting into the movie business was a “bit of an accident.” It was a time before studying cinema was recognized as a fine art, so she was a playwrighting major at Yale. Then someone told her she would average about $1,500 for her plays. Concerned if she could support herself, she was advised to look into the movie business. “I said, ‘What’s that?’” Schulman, now the CEO and president of Welle Entertainment, recalls. “And the next thing you knew, I was in an interview, and I was hired to work on a set, and the rest is history.”

The movie was “Blue Steel,” and the-then 22-year-old Schulman was excited to see the film was being directed by a woman, Kathryn Bigelow. (She didn’t know it would be another 20 years before she worked with a female director.) From those humble beginnings, Schulman would go on to enormous...

“I don’t give great parts away”: Kevin Costner Explains Why He Cast His Own Son in Horizon Without an Audition Amid Rising ‘Nepo Babies’ in Hollywood
Image
The iconic actor, director, and Hollywood heartthrob Kevin Costner has long been known for his audacious decisions in both on- and off-screen roles (such as his Yellowstone exit). But his latest move might leave fans and critics alike with a sense of confusion—and maybe a little bit of envy.

The former star of Yellowstone revealed recently that he did cast his son in Horizon: An American Saga without even holding a traditional audition. The two-part story of the forthcoming flick has been Costner’s passion project. Entertainment Tonight was informed by the two-time Oscar winner about his commitment to the work on this Western epic.

Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga blazes a trail at CinemaCon with an extended look at the Western epic
Image
Hold onto your horses, folks! Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga is riding into CinemaCon 2024 to share the latest about the Yellowstone and Dances With Wolves star’s Western epic. On Monday, we learned the first part of Horizon: An American Saga, which will debut at the Cannes Film Festival on May 19. Still, attendees moseying into CinemaCon got a new look at the sprawling drama of how settlers won the West.

During the Warner Bros. panel, Costner addressed the CinemaCon crowd, saying the movie is a bit about the promise of America. The idea was that if you were mean enough, tough enough, you could take what you wanted, but in the process, you stepped on people who had been here for 1000 years. But the film does not pass judgment, and that story, to him, was drama.

Speaking about making the movie, Costner said he likes “Journey” movies. He...

Horizon Footage Reaction: Director Kevin Costner's Western Epic Looks Utterly Massive [CinemaCon 2024]
Image
Time to put on your spurs and don that 10-gallon hat that's been gathering dust in your closet. With his "Yellowstone" days potentially behind him, Kevin Costner is taking moviegoers back to the Old West with his multi-part directorial effort "Horizon: An American Saga," and he's bringing all his friends with him. That's not even a joke. The "Dances With Wolves" filmmaker appears to be competing with "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" when it comes to assembling a massive cast filled with big names and respected character actors. Having gone more than 20 years since his last sojourn in the saddle with the 2003 Western "Open Range," Costner is clearly embracing a "go big or go home" philosophy here. Personally, I just hope the Academy allows John Mulaney to summarize the plot for this particular Costner concoction when next year's Oscars ceremony rolls around.

With Warner Bros. preparing to unleash the first two parts...

Everything You Need To Remember Before Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire
Image
The MonsterVerse franchise is an underrated contender in the cinematic universe wars, with a clear watching order that avoids confusion or an overwhelming number of entries. Part of the success of the franchise is that the continuity and canon are not overly complicated — well, it is a franchise about giant monsters punching each other in the face, after all.

After doing what all big cinematic universes do and expanding to TV — albeit with a really good show in this case, the MonsterVerse is back on the big screen with "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire." The movie is set to not only bring the King of the Monsters and the Eighth Wonder of the World together once again but also bring a bit of a buddy-cop vibe to the MonsterVerse.

Still, as relatively straight-forward as the franchise is, there are still things you should remember before watching "Godzilla x Kong,...

Adam Driver Hits Back at Constant Questions Over Playing Italians: 'Who Gives a S—t?'
Image
Adam Driver says "Who gives a s—t that it was two Italians back-to-back?" in response to being asked about portraying Gucci and Ferrari. Driver's acting ability is comparable to some of Hollywood's best thespians, in particular Henry Fonda. Driver's talent and career trajectory have allowed him the freedom to choose his roles based on creative fulfillment rather than monetary gain.

Is it fair to call Adam Driver the Henry Fonda of this generation? Driver’s versatility is certainly reminiscent of how Fonda could portray any role, whether it be Davis, aka the eighth juror, in 12 Angry Men or how he played against typecasting as the villainous cowboy, Frank, in Once Upon a Time in the West (1968). Driver certainly has that elite level of acting acumen, but Driver has, quite by happenstance, taken on the roles of two well-known Italians in Maurizio Gucci and most recently, as Enzo Ferrari.

The Oates appearance comes at quite a coincidental moment: He and Hall have been in the news recently after a falling out (and Hall’s lawsuit) over Oates’ plan to sell his share of their joint venture.

“I can’t really talk about it,” Oates told Variety last week. “I don’t really want to talk about it. It...

A hard-fought battle between two of Nxt’s best highflyers went the way of Axiom as he bested Nathan Frazer in a fast-paced match-up.The speed of both Superstars was on full display as was their athleticism, as Axiom’s moonsault to the outside was soon one-upped by Frazer countering a top-rope maneuver by hitting a twisting neckbreaker. One hesitation by Frazer opened the door for Axiom, who hit a scintillating Spanish Fly and followed that up with a perfect Golden Ratio to win the friendly matchup.

Chris Hayes Honors Journalists ‘Who Paid the Ultimate Price While Bearing Witness’ in Israel-Hamas War (Video)
Chris Hayes
On Monday night’s “All-In,” MSNBC’s Chris Hayes took some time to “honor those fellow members of our profession who paid the ultimate price of bearing witness for all of us” in the war between Israel and Hamas.

Hayes was inspired by the shocking number of journalists who’ve been killed in Gaza during the conflict, which has been raging since the devastating Hamas attacks on Israel Oct. 7. Hayes called Gaza “the most dangerous place in the world for journalists right now, and it’s not even close.”

You can watch the clip at the bottom of the page.

Hayes noted that foreign journalists are only allowed into Gaza if they’re embedded with Israeli military forces, which means the work of Palestinian journalists in many ways makes them “the eyes and ears of the world.” Which brought him to the disturbing story from last week, in which a...

Young Guns is a cult favorite Western movie with a stacked cast and a bloody, action-packed ending. The movie revolves around the Regulators' war with the corrupt Lawrence Murphy, who wants to kill their friend Alex due to his knowledge of corruption and intent to take down Murphy's ring. Billy the Kid's killing spree in the movie is driven by his desire to get the attention of President Hayes and bring an end to Murphy's reign. In the end, the Regulators come out on top against Murphy's men in a climactic shootout.

Young Guns is a bombastic Western that has become a cult favorite, but given how eventful the movie is, not every detail of its bloody ending is clear. Based on real events of the Wild West, the 1988 movie follows Billy the Kid and his gang of Regulators, who fight the corrupt Lawrence Murphy in the Lincoln County War.
