Eric is a show of many stories. Created by Welsh playwright Abi Morgan and starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the distraught Vincent Anderson, the Netflix limited series balances the disappearance of Vincents son, Edgar, with subplots involving a corrupt deputy mayor (Jeff Hephner), the plight of New Yorks homeless in the 1980s, and the dark, psychological implications of the shows namesake puppet, Eric. Plunging its hands into the filth of a rotting city, the series offers an unflinching look at brutal sanitation workers and child trafficking, all while sparing comparably less screen time for one of its most compelling side characters, Lennie Wilson (Dan Fogler). Taken for granted by most characters in Eric, Lennie struggles with his silent demons all throughout the series, but his tragic fate is ultimately the result of unsupportive relationships and the personal cost of living in a homophobic time period.

Many fans admire Benedict Cumberbatch for his big-screen roles. The most popular one is Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, he cut his teeth in theater and on the small screen. Since 2010, he has been adored for playing the titular character in BBC's Sherlock.

Now, Cumberbatch is back on another TV show with Netflix's Eric. This time, he's stringing together clues to find his missing son, Edgar. However, he isn't a genius; he's an alcoholic father named Vincent Anderson, who is suffering from a mental breakdown. To make matters worse, Edgar's drama gets entangled next to a larger conspiracy at hand. It builds to a suspenseful, emotional ending that speaks to trauma within families, as well as how political corruption wrecks cities.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Gaby Hoffmann liken their new Netflix limited series, Eric, to being about a parent’s worst nightmare.

“It is a fable about the cost of losing sight of what is important, and that is costly to the child within us and the children outside of us that we’re responsible for in the world,” Cumberbatch tells The Hollywood Reporter in a joint interview with Hoffman.
