Exclusive: In a competitive situation with multiple bidders, a drama starring Lizzy Caplan as a crisis PR executive has landed at Netflix for development, Deadline has learned. A rep for the streamer declined comment.

As Deadline previously reported, the untitled project, from American Horror Story: Delicate showrunner Halley Feiffer, A24, Caplan’s Westborn banner, Marti Noxon‘s Tiny Pyro Productions and Vox Media Studios, hit the marketplace last month amid the ongoing Blake Lively-Justin Baldoni legal drama that has put crisis PR in the spotlight. Amid his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump sat down with CNN This Morning anchor Kaitlan Collins at the event held in New Hampshire. The 70-minute town hall was populated by mostly Trump supporters and likely Republican voters, and the former president was able to dominate proceedings, overwhelming Collins who tried in vain to correct Trump’s statements and falsehoods about issues including the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, a federal abortion ban, immigration and the war in Ukraine.

“CNN This Morning” host Don Lemon is pushing back against the criticism that the cable network skews liberal.

“Late Show” host Stephen Colbert asked Lemon during Monday’s episode about his new boss, CEO Chris Licht, who has made sweeping programming changes at CNN. Prior to taking over for Jeff Zucker in May, Licht coincidentally served as showrunner and executive producer on “The Late Show.”

“He would stand right over there and hit the applause sign before we went to commercial — basically all his job was. Now he has a really hard job, running CNN,” Colbert said. “The word on the street is you guys aren’t allowed to be liberal anymore. Is that the case?”

“I don’t think we ever were liberal,” Lemon replied.

“What?” Colbert said. “That’s not me saying that, that’s the people out there saying he’s not letting you be liberal anymore.

To CNN employees, the most surprising thing about the channel’s morning show announcement was how surprising it was.

CNN’s culture has, for years, been leaky, and big news has often found a way to trickle out. The morning shake-up, which will see Don Lemon depart 10 p.m. for the mornings, joined by veteran anchor Poppy Harlow and White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins, came as a shock to two CNN sources The Hollywood Reporter spoke to (some CNN staff were convinced Lemon would be shown the door by new management).

But maybe it shouldn’t have. Licht, after all, told CNN employees on a daily editorial call after the cancellation of Reliable Sources that they should tune out reporting on the channel, and that no one outside of himself and a select group of CNN executives had any insight into their programming plans and strategy.

Comedy Central has set a premiere date for animated news satire show “Stephen Colbert Presents Tooning Out the News.” TheWrap can exclusively reveal it heads to the small screen on Wednesday, Oct. 5.

The half-hour show, which features animated characters lampooning top news stories, and interviewing real-world guests, will air after “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.” It’s move to Comedy Central from its original home of CBS All Access (before it was Paramount+) was announced in May.

In his first major analyst hire since joining CNN, CEO Chris Licht said Tuesday that the cable news channel had hired John Miller, a former TV correspondent who also had two long stints with the NYPD, to serve as its chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst.

Miller was most recently the NYPD’s deputy commissioner for intelligence and counterterrorism, and retired from the department earlier this summer. He had previously worked as the NYPD’s chief spokesperson in the 1990s, and also worked as a spokesperson for the LAPD and the FBI.

But he also had a long career in TV news, working as a correspondent and anchor (of 20/20) for ABC News, and as a correspondent for CBS News, where he crossed paths with Licht.

John Harwood, a White House correspondent who joined CNN in 2020, is leaving the network — the latest exit in recent weeks as executives appear to be mulling the news outlet’s roster in the aftermath of corporate parent Discovery’s acquisition of WarnerMedia.

Harwood, a veteran Beltway journalist whose career has taken him to The Wall Street Journal and CNBC, announced his exit Friday afternoon via social media. “today’s my last day at CNN. proud of the work,” he wrote on Twitter. “look forward to figuring out what’s next.”

CNN’s chairman and CEO Chris Licht told anxious staffers Friday that more changes are coming to CNN, as he addressed the news of Brian Stelter’s exit following the cancellation of his Sunday show Reliable Sources.

According to sources who were present, Licht told CNN employees at Friday’s well-attended editorial meeting, “There will be moves you may not agree with or understand.” Some took that to mean they may not like some of the changes.

He added, “I want to acknowledge to everyone that this is a time of change. I know that it is unsettling.”

Licht also expressed some irritation over some media reports about CNN’s plans, characterizing them as incorrect assumptions. The exec stressed to staff that those fluid plans are only known by a few in CNN management’s inner circle.

Ryan Kadro, formerly the executive producer for “CBS This Morning,” has been tapped as CNN’s senior vice president of content, strategy and development.

He will report to Amy Entelis, executive VP of talent and content development for CNN Worldwide. Among his duties, Kadro will help revamp CNN’s morning news program. He will also help brainstorm new programming for the cabler.

Kadro is a former deputy to Chris Licht, who is now CEO of CNN, and took over as executive producer of “CBS This Morning” after Licht departed to work on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”

The show’s team was notified of the cancellation on Thursday. Their jobs also are being cut, but they will be given the opportunity to apply for new jobs at CNN, according to the network. The network did not say what programming would replace the one-hour program.

Stelter did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but he said in a statement to NPR, “It was a rare privilege to lead a weekly show focused on the press at a time when it has never been more consequential.”

In a letter sent Friday to colleagues, Toobin revealed that he is parting ways with CNN, which has backed him in good times and bad. His entry this year, the FX limited series “Impeachment: American Crime Story” checked all the Murphy boxes as he zeroed in on the relationship between President Bill Clinton (Clive Owen) and White House intern Monica Lewinsky (Beanie Feldstein).

The cast is stocked with such Emmy favorites such as Sarah Paulson, a winner for her performance as Marcia Clark in Murphy’s “The People v. O.J. Simpson, who portrays the diabolical Linda Tripp; multiple Emmy winner Edie Falco who embodies an explosive Hillary Clinton and multiple winner Margo Martindale (“The Americans”), who is smarmy literary agent Lucianne Goldberg.

The arc of the limited series based on Jeffrey Toobin’s book traces not only the ill-considered, ill-fated Clinton-Lewinsky affair, but also Tripp’s masterful manipulation of Lewinsky.

Though an enormous number of beloved, bygone TV shows have been revived for the streaming era, there isn’t a whole lot of precedent for this kind of revival in the area of sketch comedy. It makes sense: There are fewer hit sketch comedy shows than straight sitcoms or dramas, and many of the most famous lineups would now be incomplete (like “Sctv” or “Monty Python’s Flying Circus”), or have featured too many incarnations to reunite properly (like the many casts of “Saturday Night Live”).

There’s also the matter of how sketch comedy is often fueled by youthful vitality. “The Carol Burnett Show,” for example, was a huge 11-season hit in the ’60s and ’70s, but a 1991 revival quickly floundered despite arriving just 13 years after its original finale—about the same amount of time that’s elapsed since Canadian comedy troupe the Kids in the Hall last appeared on television.

After a leaked draft opinion all but confirmed that the U.S. Supreme Court is working toward abolishing the right to an abortion, CNN decided for some reason to bring Jeffrey Toobin on the air to talk about it.

And a big topic at hand: Whether or not the leak itself, rather than the decision, is bad for the Supreme Court.

Of course, the cable network was thoroughly mocked by frustrated supporters of Roe v Wade who saw both the decision to have Toobin on, and what the discussion focused on, as a sad failure on CNN’s part.

Toobin appeared on “Anderson Cooper 360” in a segment excerpted and shared by CNN media reporter Brian Stelter. The excerpt shared by Stelter focused on a peculiar element of the matter: The leak itself.

Politico obtained a draft opinion that shows that the Supreme Court is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade, giving states the power to ban abortion.

The leak of a draft opinion is extremely rare for the court, which has held its proceedings as secret until their rulings are announced.

“Roe was egregiously wrong from the start,” Justice Samuel Alito writes in the draft. Instead, he wrote that it should be up to “the people’s representatives” to decide. States could then enforce abortion bans or pass new ones.

Politico also posted the complete draft opinion — which you can read here — which indicates that it was circulated on Feb. 10.

The court’s opinion is not final until it is made public and published, something that is not expected until late June or even early July, near the end of its term when it has traditionally released its rulings in the most controversial cases.

Chris Cuomo wants CNN parent WarnerMedia to keep paying him even though he no longer works there.

The former CNN primetime anchor alleged in an arbitration filing Wednesday that his career has suffered damages in excess of $125 million, and suggested CNN had allowed several of his one-time colleagues to violate standards and practices in a bid to keep viewership. The search to replace Jeff Zucker is over. Multiple outlets are reporting that Chris Licht, the former “Morning Joe” producer who currently runs “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” will be placed in charge of the cable network when Discovery merges with WarnerMedia later this year. Licht is expected to be named head of news for the new entity, Warner Bros. Discovery. The position will put him in command of CNN, but he will not run the conglomerate’s sports division, as Zucker did.

The move comes at a tumultuous moment for CNN after a 2021 that saw the cable network bogged down with scandals from both its on-air talent and c-suite executives. Initial Nielsen ratings for FX’s Sept. 7 debut of “Impeachment: American Crime Story” dropped significantly from earlier premieres of Ryan Murphy’s “American Crime Story” anthology five and three years ago, respectively.

According to Nielsen Live+Same Day ratings, the “Impeachment” launch drew 916,000 viewers and a rating of 0.24 in the key adults 18-49 demographic.

The series failed to come close to the record-setting numbers achieved by the first season of the show “The People v. O.J. Simpson” in 2016 and the respectable premiere scores of “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” in 2018. The former garnered over 5 million viewers and a rating of 2.0 in the key demo, while the second obtained 2.22 million viewers and a 0.72 rating in the key demo. Both previous debuts topped all other cable telecasts the night they aired, while “Impeachment” was in the fourth slot.

Hulu customers expecting to stream “Impeachment: American Crime Story” today — or anytime soon — will be disappointed: The FX limited series isn’t on the Disney-controlled streaming platform’s on-demand streaming tiers.

Instead, “Impeachment,” a retelling of the notorious Monica Lewinsky-Bill Clinton saga from more than two decades ago, will be headed to Netflix sometime in 2022. The first episode of the series aired Tuesday night on FX.

Ordinarily, episodes of new FX original series and new seasons of existing series that premiere on FX and Fxx are available the day after on Hulu (starting at 3:01 a.m. Pt) streaming packages with ads and without ads. Hulu just announced a $1-per-month price hike for the two on-demand plans, starting next month.
