Josh Ruben’s Heart Eyes brought a brand new original slasher to the box office over the weekend, with the holiday-themed horror movie nearly matching the opening weekend of fellow Spyglass slasher Thanksgiving back in 2023. While that movie opened to $10.3 million, Heart Eyes came up a tad bit short with a domestic opening weekend haul of $8.5 million.

Sony released Heart Eyes into 3,102 theaters across the United States over the weekend, with the slasher/romantic comedy hybrid competing with the Super Bowl on Sunday. But the real test for Heart Eyes will be this coming weekend, with Valentine’s Day Weekend giving the Valentine’s Day-themed horror movie a perfect opportunity to win over more hearts.

Heart Eyes, which comes with a reported $18 million production price tag, is currently in the #2 spot on the domestic box office charts behind the animated family movie Dogman.

It’s always a sign of a good horror movie when it’s making audiences squirm and even vomit in their seats, and this year’s first horror movie to meet those high standards has already been unleashed upon the world. It’s titled The Ugly Stepsister, a body horror twist on the classic Cinderella fairytale that just premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last night.

According to a report from Variety that details the sights and sounds of Sundance’s opening night, “It was also clear that Sundance still favors the bold and doesn’t shy away from screening films that may illicit strong reactions. During the premiere of the opening Sundance Midnight movie The Ugly Stepsister, a moviegoer leaned over into the aisle and vomited.”

It was an unconventional strategy. Focus Features made the bold choice to release Robert Eggers’ period horror movie Nosferatu on Christmas Day, offering up a fresh take on a gothic horror classic as a bit of counterprogramming against traditional holiday fare. And it was a gamble that paid off, with Nosferatu sinking its fangs into an impressive opening weekend.

Here in the United States, Nosferatu scared up $40.3 million in its 5-day holiday weekend debut, which Variety notes is “the biggest Christmas Day launch and weekend haul for a genre film, overtaking the benchmark set in 1998 by Robert Rodriguez’s high school sci-fi story The Faculty with $4.4 million on opening day and $11.6 million over the traditional weekend.”

“Heading into the extended Yuletide frame, Nosferatu was projected to open to $25 million from 2,992 North American theaters,” Variety further details. “Focus Features reported that 40% of opening weekend crowds purchased their tickets the day before they saw the movie.

Despite building the entire multiverse saga with Jonathan Majors’ Kang at the center, following his conviction earlier this year, the MCU opted to distance itself from the actor. While most felt the Comic Book juggernaut would lean towards a recast, which made sense considering how much they invested in Kang’s storyline, to fans’ surprise, Doctor Doom is now the new big bad of the MCU.

Comedic murder mysteries are such a rarity these days in the crowd of tense, violent whodunit entries that work more like docu-features that Chris Nelson’s Reunion feels like a breath of fresh air, despite not being exceptional in any aspect. The central mystery feels ill-contrived, the characters feel more like archetypes rather than having identities of their own, even though the ensemble of prominent actors is one of the hooks of the movie, and the comedic element isn’t the best you can expect despite the presence of actors like Lil Rel Howery and Jillian Bell. To top it all off, the dialogue writing and certain narrative choices feel extremely dated. However, Reunion still somehow manages to be entertaining enough to keep you glued to the screen for the ninety odd minutes of its runtime. It might not be rewarding at the end, but odds are you will not regret it either.

Deadline reports that James Ward Byrkit and producer Kate Andrews (It’s What’s Inside) are developing “a feature follow-up to Coherence,” with Byrkit returning to write and direct.

Squid Game: The Challenge Season 2 is officially in the works.

The news doesn't come as much of a surprise, given the show's impact.

Taking one of the most popular shows and making a real-life version certainly got everyone talking, but it's been interesting, albeit a little too fast-paced.

"There was no red light in our decision to greenlight Season 2 of Squid Game: The Challenge, the most ambitious unscripted show we've premiered at Netflix," Netflix VP of Nonfiction Series Brandon Riegg said in a statement about the pickup.

From “Girls Trip” and “The Blackening” writer Tracy Oliver, “Harlem” follows four best friends in Harlem — Camille (Meagan Good), Tye (Jerrie Johnson), Quinn (Grace Byers) and Angie (Shonique Shandai) — who navigate new phases of their careers, relationships and big city dreams together.

Season 1 of “Harlem” premiered December of 2021, while Season 2 aired in February of this year.

Prime Video has renewed Harlem for a third season.

From writer Tracy Oliver, Harlem is a comedy following four best girlfriends in Harlem NYC, the mecca of Black culture in America, starring Meagan Good as “Camille,” Grace Byers as “Quinn,” Shoniqua Shandai as “Angie,” Jerrie Johnson as “Tye,” and Tyler Lepley as “Ian”.

In Season 2, after blowing up her career and disrupting her love life, Camille had to figure out how to put the pieces back together. Tye tried to figure out how to make meaningful connections while navigating a nasty divorce. Quinn sought out balance as she rode the emotional roller coaster of life, and Angie looked for luck at every turn as she tried to find her place in the world. Together, the women continued to level up into the next phase of their careers, relationships, and big city dreams.

Billed as a “hallucinogenic urban exploring horror movie,” John Pata’s Black Mold won Best Indie Feature at this year’s Panic Fest in the US, and it’s coming to Tubi this week.

Black Mold will exclusively debut on Tubi Thursday, December 7.

In the film, “Photographer Brooke and her pal Tanner (Andrew Bailes) sneak into abandoned, off-limits buildings for the sake of their art and also the adrenaline rush. For a while, Zack Snyder was building a cinematic universe for the Netflix streaming service that centered on his zombie movie Army of the Dead. The film was quickly followed by a prequel called Army of Thieves, a sequel was being written, and an anime series called Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas was in the works. But Snyder has since shifted his focus over to building a multi-media universe around his upcoming Netflix sci-fi film Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire (and its follow-up Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver). So Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas sits unfinished… and during an interview with Total Film magazine, Snyder revealed that Army of the Dead and Rebel Moon aren’t entirely separate. In fact, if Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas ever gets completed, we’ll be seeing a Rebel Moon crossover on the show!

The ever-busy Tyler Perry has signed a multiyear, first-look feature pact with Netflix, with the multihyphenate planning to write, direct and produce films for the streamer.

Perry is already working with Netflix on several titles, including Six Triple Eight, a World War II period film about the only all-Black, all-female battalion stationed overseas in the war effort. Kerry Washington will lead an ensemble cast that also includes Oprah Winfrey. He has also set the legal drama Mea Culpa, which stars Kelly Rowland as a criminal defense attorney who takes on the case of an artist who may or may not have murdered his girlfriend.

Perry previously worked with Netflix on his period drama A Jazzman’s Blues, thriller A Fall From Grace and A Madea Homecoming — the 12th installment in his Madea film franchise.

The third annual Halloween episode of “Chucky” will air on both USA and Syfy this Wednesday, and we’ve got a gallery of images to whet your appetite this morning.

In Halloween III: Season of the Witch, airing on October 25, “Jake, Devon and Lexy infiltrate a Halloween ball to stop Chucky – But the demon doll has other plans.”

The images reveal our hero characters dressed as Chucky while Chucky is dressed as the Phantom of the Opera, so we’re expecting a whole lot of Halloween fun this week.

And if the previous three episodes are any indication, we can also expect things to get Extremely bloody. They sure are going for it with the kills this season, eh?!

Fresh out of its world premiere at TIFF, the Anna Kendrick-directed thriller Woman of the Hour has been sold to Netflix for a staggering eight figures, Variety reports this week.

Variety details, “The streamer is paying in the $11 million range for the ripped-from-the-headlines thriller, making it the first major sale of the festival. The deal covers the U.S. and several international territories including France, Italy, Japan and South Korea.”

In the wake of scaring up over $100 million at the worldwide box office, Disney has announced that this year’s new Haunted Mansion movie is headed home for the Halloween season.

Haunted Mansion comes to Disney+ on October 4, 2023.

Director Justin Simien’s adaptation of the popular theme park attraction is Disney’s second crack at the property, with Eddie Murphy starring in the previous adaptation back in 2003.
