Peacock wasn’t convinced enough to continue with another season of its horror series Teacup. Almost three months after the finale dropped, the streamer announced the cancellation after the show's first season, per TVLine. So, there won't be a season 2.
Why was cancelling Teacup the right decision?
Peacock did not officially release the show’s viewership details. But one thing is for sure, Teacup did not get the significant audience numbers that it should have. It did not even make it into the Nielsen Top 10 streaming charts. And so, because it wasn't able to make an impact on the streaming charts, Teacup easily made it to cancellation after one season.
The series gained a 77 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes and a rating of 6.4 on IMDb. Some Rt critics even gave strong flatteries for the show, saying it pulled them in with its first two episodes. However even though the show's first-episode was a banger,...

The James Wan-produced series Teacup, which is an adaptation of the 1988 bestseller Stinger, written by Robert R. McCammon (pick up a copy Here), had its premiere on the Peacock streaming service back in October – and while JoBlo’s own Alex Maidy thought it was a good show (you can read his 7/10 review at This Link), it apparently didn’t connect with as many viewers as Peacock was hoping it would. Variety reports that Peacock has cancelled the show after just one season. Variety notes that “Peacock does not typically release viewership information so one cannot gauge the kind of audience the show found, but it failed to make a dent on the Nielsen Top 10 streaming charts.”
McCammon’s novel has the following description: The story takes place during a single twenty-four hour period in Inferno, Texas. Inferno is a town in trouble, driven to the brink by racial tension,...

Peacock has chosen not to continue its horror-thriller series Teacup for a second season, ending the adaptation of Robert McCammon’s book Stinger. The series started in October 2024 and had a famous cast, including Yvonne Strahovski and Scott Speedman.
Set in rural Georgia, Teacup is about strangers coming together because of an unknown danger. The show got a 70% approval rate on Rotten Tomatoes and mostly good reviews, but it didn’t do well on Nielsen’s streaming charts. Peacock usually keeps its viewing numbers secret and does not share specific details.
The series had a talented artistic team. Ian McCulloch was the writer and executive director, and E.L. Katz, who directed The Haunting of Bly Manor and Channel Zero, directed the first two episodes. Kevin Tancharoen directed the final episode. Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett served as executive producers. The show was produced by James Wan’s Atomic Monster production company.

Yet another well-received 2024 show has found itself on the chopping block, and this time it's one that was well-received by Stephen King. The past few years have seen the acclaimed horror author turn his creative endeavors to also sharing his reviews on a variety of films and TV shows, with everything from Apple TV+'s Constellation to The Midwitch Cuckoos getting his approval. The horror genre, in particular, has seen plenty of reviews from King, including Blumhouse's Night Swim and Strange Darling.
Though his voice has helped certain shows find success, many 2024 TV releases have still found themselves cancelled after just one season. Many of them also, unfortunately, left audiences on cliffhanger endings, including the Child's Play sequel show Chucky, the Apple TV+ sci-fi show Sunny and the Star Wars spinoff The Acolyte, while others that left off on mostly closed notes still came to a close, including American Born Chinese.

Despite being praised by critics as one of the best horror series of 2024, Peacock has canceled “Teacup” after one season, Variety reports this afternoon.
The series debuted in October 2024 and was executive produced by James Wan and inspired by Robert McCammon’s Stinger.
It followed a disparate group of people on a ranch who must come together in the face of a mysterious threat in order to survive. As the showrunner previously revealed, it was only loosely based on the novel that inspired it, instead opting for a more cerebral, paranoid take on the material.
Scott Speedman (The Strangers), Yvonne Strahovski (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), and Chaske Spencer (“Jessica Jones”, The Twilight Saga), Kathy Baker, Boris McGiver, Caleb Dolden, Emilie Bierre, Luciano Leroux star in “Teacup.”
As I wrote in my review, “The inaugural season is self-contained, trapping its characters in a claustrophobic bubble of oncoming terror and interpersonal drama. It...

2024 was a crowded year for television that had its share of misfires, but among the droves of disposable content was some stellar horror programming – from “Evil” to “The Creep Tapes” – that celebrates the genre’s versatility.
Television has reached a curious inflection point where what was once heralded as the medium’s Golden Age has turned into a daunting obligation where there’s far too much content to consume and the lengthy gaps between short seasons is enough to strip away even the most extreme enthusiasm. TV is in an interesting phase at the moment and while many prestige streaming series have struggled, the horror genre has thrived and turned out deeply captivating and creepy material. Television remains a safe haven for the horror genre and 2024 was a strong year for both brand new horror and returning series that are sure to entertain genre fans who are looking for something...

It seems the post-apocalyptic subgenre of science-fiction still scratches an itch for suspense, speculation and even displays of human resilience. Whether doomsday comes by fire, water or from underneath, it seems the possibilities for this genre are endless even as most writers and directors stick to convention. Directed by George Nolfi, starring Anthony Mackie, Maddie Hasson, Morena Baccarin and Danny Boyd Jr., the monster-driven, mountaintop sci-fi movie Elevation attempts to soar to new heights of dread, suspense and monster-hunting thrills with some strong ideas, a solid cast and plenty of pathos. However, Elevations' high-flying ambitions don't quite take off.
In Elevation, it began when a long-dormant race of armored monsters, known as the Reapers, emerged from the ground. An apocalypse ensued, with the aliens wiping out entire civilizations and reducing the global population to a bare minimum. The invaders have one weakness high elevations above 8,000 feet. In order to survive,...

After bowing theatrically in September, E.L. Katz's religious horror movie Azrael is poised to join Shudder on October 25, 2024. A perfect Halloween watch, the film stars Samara Weaving as Azrael, a woman who escapes captivity from a pious cult of wicked worshipers and is systematically stalked by the members for a ritual sacrifice. Of course, beyond the protagonist's namesake, the movie title has an angelic/demonic connotation that bears further scrutiny.
In addition to parsing the mythological meaning of the movie's title, it's worth explaining how the twisted plot plays into biblical lore and reinforces the eternal struggle between good and evil. Far from only the protagonist's moniker, Azrael has a religious historical subtext that dovetails into the devious horror story.

“Many years after the rapture,” we are told, “among the survivors, some are driven to renounce the sin of Speech.”
The visual world building in El Katz’s Frightfest-featured post-apocalyptic horror flick is ingenious, weaving together apparently disparate elements which one can imagine might survive in such a situation and, by dint of the fact that most characters don’t speak, avoiding any pressure to explain them. People are living in camps in the woods, yet others still drive. Religious beliefs have shifted dramatically, but there are still denim jeans and waterproof jackets. We get a sense of parallel societies co-existing not that far apart, though we only really connect with one. The is where we find Azrael (Samara Weaving), a prisoner who has escaped along with her love (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett) and is striving to put distance between the two of them and a cult that wants to sacrifice them to.

If youve ever wondered what happens between takes on Stranger Things, one cast member is ready to share what its like working with fan favorite David Harbour, who plays beleaguered Chief Hopper in the hit sci-fi show. Rob Morgan's character, Officer Powell, became the new police chief when Hopper disappeared he was later found in a Russian gulag in Season 4. Morgan took time while promoting his pivotal role in Peacocks new horror thriller Teacup to share his experience working with Harbour.
David Harbour is very grounded, very cool. He's the kind of cat that'll be reading a book in between the takes, you know. You're like, Damn, that's so intelligent. He looks so cool over there reading that book in between takes, even though he's got like a five-page scene that we're doing, he still has the wherewithal to read some book. I was always impressed with David about that.

Created by Ian McCulloch, the series is a tense thrill ride unfolding over 48 hours as those affected by the strange incident gradually discover something far more sinister keeping them on the farm. With things already tense between the occupants of the farm, this only escalates the propensity for violence and personal stakes involved.

“Teacup,” Peacock’s new series executive produced by James Wan, is a tricky one to write about. Writer, producer, and showrunner Ian McCulloch (Yellowstone) draws very little from Robert McCammon’s Stinger, opting for a modern, minimalist interpretation of the horror western, one driven almost entirely by its central mystery. The eight-episode inaugural season is so structured around its enigmatic threat, purpose, methodology, and reach that “Teacup“ becomes a landmine of spoilers to dodge for the sake of preserving its many, many surprises. While that makes for a lot of setup and character dynamics to establish, McCulloch’s careful plotting and effective atmospherics pay off, resulting in an intense, rewarding inaugural season.

Plot: Follows a disparate group of people in rural Georgia who must come together in the face of a mysterious threat in order to survive. Inspired by the New York Times bestselling novel “Stinger” by Robert McCammon.
Review: The name James Wan attached to a production likely makes you think you are in for something similar to The Conjuring or Insidious. The filmmaker has become synonymous with scary movies as much as he has directed big-budget tentpoles like Aquaman and Furious 7. Still, his prowess as a producer has fostered several cool projects under his Atomic Monster banner in recent years. The new series Teacup carries Wan’s name recognition but is the brainchild of Ian McCulloch. Inspired by the Robert McCammon novel Stinger, Teacup is a unique and original foray into genre storytelling that combines horror, science fiction, and family drama for a creepy drama series that is much...

Years after the Rapture, some of the survivors are so shaken up that they vow to give up even the simple act of speaking – that’s how much things have changed. This statement pretty much sums up E.L. Katz’s, “Azrael” (2024). The film takes place post-rapture, which, in Christian belief, is when, at the end of time, all the good-hearted people (both the living and the dead) are plucked up to the heavens, leaving behind the so-called sinners. Those left behind are stuck in a world where chaos, crime, and sin run wild. The film really drills into that idea of the breakdown of society, faith, and morality in a world abandoned by the righteous.
Azrael (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis: Who is Azrael?
“Azrael” is about a fierce woman of the same name trying to survive in a post-rapture world gone completely mute. Yes, people have given up talking, believing speech itself is sinful now.

At the heart of Alexandre Aja's latest film, Never Let Go, lies a question: how much do you trust your mother? In context, however, the circumstances go far beyond merely looking both ways before crossing the street. The mother in question is Halle Berry, who plays "Momma," a weary survivalist who will do anything to protect her two tween sons -- Nolan and Samuel -- from a purported multifarious malevolence that only Momma can see. The film is set primarily in and around a remote cabin, sequestered within a verdant thicket, far removed from anyone or anything save for the "Evil" concealed amongst the trees.
What we, the audience, don't know, and what Nolan and Samuel don't know, is whether something is genuinely lurking just beyond the plane of the visible or if Momma is making it up. Per Momma, Evil has overtaken the world, and the cabin serves...

The Peacock streaming service recently announced that the first two episodes of the James Wan-produced series Teacup, which is an adaptation of the 1988 bestseller Stinger, written by Robert R. McCammon (pick up a copy Here), are set to premiere on October 10th… and if you’re wondering why the TV series has a different title than the novel source material, it turns out there’s a very good reason for that. Yellowstone consulting producer Ian McCulloch is a writer and executive producer on the show, in addition to being the showrunner, and he told SFX magazine that the show only really adapts the spirit of McCammon’s novel.
McCulloch said, “I think that if I had read the book as a teenager when it came out, I might have felt a little more beholden to it. This is a very different kind of adaptation in that it’s really...

Columbia Pictures’ Saturday Night from Jason Reitman debuted at $265k, a great $53k per theater that’s the second-best limited opening of the year, and the best since June when Kinds Of Kindness also opened in 5 theaters (to a $75k PTA). It’s been a long a slightly dower wait for something to pop.
Saturday Night made $108K on Friday, $88K on Saturday and a projected $69K on Sunday in LA and New York. Expands Oct. 4 before opening wide on Oct 11 and looks well set up for a nice theatrical run with strong reviews and word of mouth since premiering at Telluride and Toronto.

E.L. Katz's new action horror movie Azrael stars horror icon Samara Weaving in one of her most challenging roles yet, as she plays a young woman trying to survive in a world where nobody can talk. The post-apocalyptic film is set in an unnamed forest many years after the biblical Rapture, and features monsters both in human form and something far more sinister. Azrael is now showing in select theaters, and relies heavily on the score and the talents of its cast, specifically Weaving, to tell the story, as almost none of the characters utter a single word in the entire runtime.
Azrael's ending does very little to clarify any of the major story beats, although there are subtle clues throughout that allow for some assumption and interpretation. One of the primary mysteries surrounds the vicious cult that hunts Weaving's Azrael for the entire movie, and how they came...

Indie distributors are fretting about the current marketplace, specifically a glut of films vying for precious theater space and hard-to-snare audiences who, with exceptions of course, still seems mostly willing to come out for big ticket films.
While there are fewer wide studio releases than pre-Covid, theaters are giving them more space, up to 60%-70% of their real estate, a few indies execs said.
Meanwhile, it’s become cheaper to distribute films, which may be why new firms keep popping up to test the waters and in some cases open their movies on hundreds of screens, perhaps without a commensurate marketing effort.
“There is a lot of stuff being released, but nothing is performing,” says one indie distribution executive. Films like Deadpool or Beetlejuice Beetlejuice work, “but everything else is a crapshoot.
“Whether consumers are going to movies other than the big ones has been the question, and still is.

E.L. Katz' new action horror film Azrael has almost no spoken dialogue, which makes it easy to miss some of the more crucial explanations of the world in which the movie takes place. Starring one of horror's greatest scream queens, Samara Weaving, Azrael takes place in a post-apocalyptic world many years after the biblical Rapture, the final ascension of the holy and righteous into Heaven. The survivors are plagued by demonic humanoid creatures known as the Burned Ones, who constantly hunger for human flesh and blood.
Azrael, which is now showing, opens with Weaving's Azrael and her lover Kenan traveling through the woods, fleeing from a cult of survivors who believe that speech is a sin, and have surgically removed their vocal cords in response to what they believed to be the reason they were not chosen. They are captured and separated, and Azrael is tied up in an...

Directed by E.L. Katz, Azrael is the latest in a series of show-stopping indie-horror to sweep the 2020s film landscape. First debuting in March 2024 at the South By Southwest film festival in Austin, Texas, Azrael disappeared soon afterwards, seemingly sharing its fate with other completed but shelved projects. Thankfully, it found a new home on horror streaming platform Shudder. Now, the movie will hit theaters on September 27th, just in time for Halloween. Starring Samara Weaving of The Babysitter fame as the title character, Azrael is a fight for survival in a world after the Rapture, where a group of human survivors live in fear of the voiceless demons that walk the Earth and demand sacrifice.
As an act of penance in this post-Rapture world, a group of survivors formed a cult where speech is treated as the ultimate sin. Here, members zealously worship a pregnant priestess, perform ritual sacrifices,...

Azrael, the latest horror starring scream queen Samara Weaving, hails from the minds of director E.L. Katz and screenwriter Simon Barrett. The movie follows a relatively simple premise: a young woman is hunted by a frightening cult and demonic creatures in a post-rapture world. Their sinister plan for her is unclear, but one thing's for sure she will survive at any cost.

Did we need E.L. Katz’s Azrael to hammer home the point that Samara Weaving is a formidable final girl? Yes, and no. Since Weaving left such an unforgettable impact as the unyielding heroine in Ready or Not, it’s sort of a struggle to shake that image when you try to fully immerse yourself in the world of Azrael. What helps though, is Azrael’s decidedly peculiar world-building. The narrative being almost completely devoid of any dialogue already meant we’d have to do without exposition. The less you are told, the closer you look.

In this week’s episode of The Discourse, host Mike DeAngelo has no words to describe the apocalyptic thriller “Azrael.” The film takes place in a silent world where a devout matriarchal society relentlessly pursues a young woman, Azrael, who has escaped their captivity. Once recaptured, she faces a grim fate—destined to be sacrificed to an ancient force lurking in the wilderness. The E.L. Katz (“Teacup”) film stars Samara Weaving, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Katarina Unt, and more.

Mayhem, Ready or Not, and Scream VI star Samara Weaving continues her hot streak in horror with Azrael, a dialogue-free survival horror movie that gets biblical with the carnage.

No, Samara Weaving is not up against zombies in her new film Azrael––it’s more complicated than that.
Her latest film, from director E.L. Katz and writer Simon Barrett, is set in a post-apocalyptic world and follows a religious cult who have all removed their own vocal cords. In doing so, this means the narrative is almost entirely dialogue-free.
Weaving leads the pack as Azrael, someone who once had ties to this cult but is trying to get away from them alongside her close companion, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett’s Kenan.

Samara Weaving returns to the horror movie genre in 2024, and there are multiple options for where to watch Azrael in a short amount of time. After making a name for herself with horror movies like Ready or Not and The Babysitter, plus having a cameo in Scream VI, the actress is cemented as a modern scream queen. Samara Weaving's horror movies filmography grew again in 2024 thanks to Azrael, the action horror movie from the minds of director E.L. Katz (Cheap Thrills) and writer Simon Barrett.
Azrael's story is set in a world where no one speaks. The movie revolves around a cult's attempt to imprison and sacrifice Weaving's Azrael to a mysterious evil. With Azrael's reviews being mostly positive, the inherent interest for some in seeing Weaving return to horror becomes even more exciting. This is especially true considering the involvement of Shudder, the horror-focused production company behind acclaimed films like In A Violent Nature,...

Azrael, the latest from director E.L. Katz (Cheap Thrills) and writer Simon Barrett, takes the golden rule of showing, not telling, to heart. More family films hitting cinemas this weekend with DreamWorks Animation/Universal’s feature take of Peter Brown’s New York Times bestseller, The Wild Robot, however, unlike Paramount/Hasbro’s Transformers One last weekend, this one is mom/female leaning. Samara Weaving is a horror movie icon. She burst onto the scene in and as The Babysitter, where she played the leader of a demonic cult masquerading as a sweet and upstanding resident in the suburbs. She later went on to cameo in the sequel to that Netflix release, alongside another budding horror enthusiast, Jenna Ortega. Weaving teamed up with Steven Yeun in Mayhem where they played two employees trying to resist the effects of an experimental virus that was causing everyone in their workplace to go berserk. And even if these films went under the radar of horror fans, everyone sat up and took notice when she took on a rich and murderous family in Ready or Not. She followed that up with the deliciously entertaining Guns Akimbo, alongside Daniel Radcliffe. She showed up for a brief cameo in Scream VI too. And now, she is here in and as Azrael,...

We’ve been on board with Teacup since the Peacock horror series dropped its first teaser last month. And a new trailer has us even more excited for this mysterious show.
Based on a beloved novel by Robert McCammon, Teacup comes to us courtesy of Saw director James Wan.
So hopes are understandably high, and from what we’ve seen thus far, Peacock might have its first true streaming sensation on its hands.

Sure, Poker Face and Girls 5eva made a splash with critics, but neither generated the kind of word of mouth that could put Peacock in the same conversation as original content powerhouses like Netflix and Max.

Based on a beloved novel by Robert McCammon, Teacup comes to us courtesy of Saw director James Wan.
So hopes are understandably high, and from what we’ve seen thus far, Peacock might have its first true streaming sensation on its hands.

A disparate group of people in rural Georgia must come together in the face of a mysterious threat in order to survive in upcoming Peacock horror series “Teacup,” executive produced by James Wan and inspired by Robert McCammon‘s Stinger. Watch the new trailer now.
James Wan said in a new statement, “After reading Robert McCammon’s book Stinger, the entire team at Atomic Monster felt a spark. The story had all the ingredients for a captivating series and [showrunner] Ian McCulloch had a vision to bring it to life in a fresh way that was both startling and darkly atmospheric, but filled with a rich sense of humanity — often lacking in edgy narratives. Add in our incredibly talented cast led by Yvonne Strahovski, Scott Speedman and Chaske Spencer and fans are in for a true edge-of-your-seat experience.”

Peacock is set to premiere a new horror series called “Teacup” on October 10th. The show was developed by acclaimed horror producer James Wan and is based loosely on the bestselling novel “Stinger” by Robert McCammon. “Teacup” tells the story of a rural family who faces a mysterious threat in their small Georgia community.
Ian McCulloch serves as the showrunner and has adapted the novel for television. While the original story was set in Texas, McCulloch moved the setting to the backwoods of Georgia. The ensemble cast includes established actors like Yvonne Strahovski of “The Handmaid’s Tale” fame alongside Scott Speedman, Chaske Spencer, and Rob Morgan. McCulloch describes “Teacup” as blending different genres like thriller, horror, family drama and science fiction into a single “keyhole” story focused on one family.
