Festival In Focus: Paul Ridd On Supporting Eiff Competition Titles Through To Distribution And Building A “Sustainable & Secure” Event For The Future
Image
Paul Ridd defines success in his role as Edinburgh International Film Festival chief using a two-pronged test.

“50% is the seven days of the festival, and how effectively we can deliver an amazing experience for our audiences and industry,” he explains. “And then 50% of it is about what happens to the films after our festival.”

Last year’s Eiff, his first in charge, he explains, was a model year.

“60% of the programme has either been picked up for distribution in the UK or has been distributed,” he says proudly. The key to supporting Eiff titles, he says, has been to engage “industry on a grassroots level”, highlighting films that are seeking distribution.

“We want to keep those stats up,” he says, adding that this year’s expanded industry section has been shaped to meet this goal. Changes include a new dedicated space for industry delegates at Tollcross Central Hall. The festival...

Payback’s Ending Ties Up Loose Ends So Neatly That Other Crime Series Could Learn Something
Image
Warning: This article contains Major Spoilers for all six episodes of Payback

Now we’ve streamed all of ITV’s latest crime thriller Payback on Itvx, we’re really going to miss being thoroughly confused, because its six mega-twisty episodes kept us guessing right to the end.

Writer Debbie O’Malley left no plot stone unturned in newly widowed Lexie’s quest to find out who killed her accountant husband Jared and just what he’d done with £27 million of crime lord Cal Morris’ hard-crimed cash.

In fact, the only questions we’ve got are: how did they manage to make financial crimes so exciting? How was Cal so terrifying, and yet so unfathomably likeable? And – after she spent all six episodes wearing a distinctive olive green number – does Lexie not own more than one coat?

We can’t answer these questions, but if you’re still curious about some of...

‘Payback’ EP Teases Bookkeeper Thriller That’ll Keep You ‘on the Edge’ of Your Seat
Image
When it comes to intrigue and drama, bookkeepers don’t instantly spring to mind. But Payback, the latest series from the team behind the monster hit Line of Duty, centers on a widow, Lexie Noble, who learns her just-murdered husband—an accountant—was mixed up with the Scottish underworld. “[Her] life implodes overnight after she discovers the life she has been living has possibly been funded by dirty money,” executive producer Madonna Baptiste says. She calls the six-episode tale a “thriller seen through the eyes of an ordinary woman thrown into an extraordinarily dangerous world.” Indeed, an impatient crime boss threatens her family, demanding she find the millions her husband apparently embezzled. But the mom of two is reluctant to go to the police, who suspect her of killing her spouse. According to Baptiste, writer Debbie O’Malley (All Creatures Great and Small) “was surprised to find out how much of ...

‘Payback’ (2023) Review: BBC ITV Crime Drama Keeps Shifting Between Boring And Thrilling
Image
A character describes the complicated process of a financial transfer to another character in ITV’s latest crime drama miniseries, Payback. The person to whom it is being explained wonders if the process is too confusing. The word he specifically uses is “convoluted”. I would describe the plot of Payback with the same words, but I would preface it by adding a “needlessly” before it. I admit that I don’t exactly understand the nitty-gritty of finance, but I am sure that’s the case for most of the viewers other than people working in that field. The thing is, Payback has a lot of money-related matters going on in its narrative, and it throws around quite a lot of jargon, which kind of goes over your head. It would have been alright if all these were actually important to understand the main plot, but as you keep watching the series,...

Netflix Cancels Supernatural Show “Lockwood & Co.” After Just One Season
Image
From writer/director Joe Cornish (Attack the Block, The Kid Who Would Be King, Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn), “Lockwood & Co.” premiered on Netflix back in January, and we’ve learned that the series has already been given the axe.

Netflix has cancelled “Lockwood & Co.” after one season, the latest in a long line of streaming shows that have been cancelled by Netflix before they had a chance to build an audience.

Variety reports this afternoon, “Variety understands that while Netflix was very pleased with the show, and especially the work that had gone into it, viewing numbers didn’t meet the threshold to greenlight a second season. But Complete Fiction, which was founded by Cornish together with Edgar Wright, Nira Park and Rachael Prior, will continue to work with Netflix. The companies already have a number of projects in development.”

Complete Fiction said in a statement of their own,...

Lockwood & Co. Season 2 News & Updates: Everything We Know
Image
Warning! Spoilers for Lockwood & Co.!

After Lockwood & Co.’s popular debut on Netflix, a significant question is whether it will get a season 2. Especially with the volatility of TV show cancelations of late, even recent news and updates can swiftly change, making any story’s survival uncertain. Until Netflix releases Lockwood & Co.’s viewership numbers for its first week on the streaming platform, which could provide more insight into the show’s chances at another season, little is assured about its future.

Lockwood & Co. tells the story of three teenage ghost hunters in London, in a world where the young are the only ones who can sense the undead. Corporate agencies have moved into the business of hunting ghosts, but Lockwood and Co. is the only real ghost-hunting team on the show run solely by paranormal teenagers. Headed up by the mysterious but dashing Anthony Lockwood (Cameron Chapman...

Netflix’s Lockwood & Co. Review: a Fun British Teen Ghost Romp
Image
Lockwood & Co. coming to Netflix just six weeks after the streaming service cancelled its last solid adaptation of a British fantasy YA book series in The Bastard Son & The Devil Itself, feels a bit like getting a new puppy after your last one was run over. You’re happy it’s here, obviously, but there’s a tug of wariness about getting too attached.

It’s very easy to get attached to this eight-episode ghost story about three teens running a supernatural detective agency. The cast is charming, the characters are likeable and their world – in which a nightly curfew and platoons of rapier-bearing teens protects London from spectral attack – is solidly conceived.

There are ongoing mysteries plus episodic encounters and an evolving Scooby Gang dynamic between its young leads. It has a touch of Harry Potter plus a touch of Being Human, and families who enjoyed Wednesday together could...

Eiff 2021 – The Road Dance Review
Image
Given the challenges the film industry has faced across the last year as a result of the pandemic, with cinemas closed globally, and films being screened primarily into living rooms, never has the value of an audience felt more essential. With that in mind, we should also put some value on the aforementioned audience’s opinions, too, and when it came to the recent Edinburgh International Film Festival, the watching faithful had one award to vote on, the prestigious Audience Award. This prize went to Richie Adams’ quietly powerful, and moving period drama The Road Dance – and it’s a more than deserving of this accolade.

Adapted from John MacKay’s novel of the same name, which is turn is loosely based on real events, The Road Dance transports the viewer back to the First World War, and the slow, tense build up towards the outbreak of battle, exploring the...

Time’s Up? Noel Clarke Scandal Reveals Industry in Need of ‘Total Recalibration,’ Say Insiders
Image
Members of the U.K. film and TV industry are calling for an overhaul of on-set safety measures and a “recalibration” of how to protect survivors of abuse following reports of multiple allegations of sexual harassment and bullying against Noel Clarke during his decades-long career as an actor, writer and producer.

Since The Guardian released its investigation into the star, best known for his roles in “Doctor Who” and “Bulletproof,” as well as creating “The Hood” film trilogy, 26 people have come forward with accusations against him. Clarke has categorically denied any sexual misconduct or criminal wrongdoing, but released a statement apologizing for some of his actions.

The revelations have emboldened industry insiders to speak out about a culture that has allowed professional misconduct to continue, even after the Time’s Up movement swept the film and TV world four years ago with the #MeToo reckoning sparked by the Harvey Weinstein scandal.

Years later, having campaigned to be told of the killer’s new identity she is accused of revealing his new name online.

Speaking at the TCA press tour, she told Deadline, “I did Boardwalk Empire for a number of years and that was a great job and it was my first experience of revisiting a role year after year and then when that finished I was really excited because I could play different parts again. Patricia Arquette and Joey King in The Act (2019)
2019 Emmy awards nominations ballot: See all 35 Best Limited Series contenders from ‘The Act’ to ‘The Widow’
Patricia Arquette and Joey King in The Act (2019)
All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 25 to cast their 2019 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for programs (save for animated documentary/nonfiction which are restricted to their peer groups.) Unlike the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally. In the past, voters were limited in the number of programs that they could put forth. Two years ago that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted.

While there has been an explosion in the number of comedy and drama series in the last several years, the limited series genre had been almost static. There were 25 entries in 2015, 26 in 2016 and 25 again in 2017. But there has been an uptick, with 33 such shows submitted in 2018 and 35 this year. Even so, with six nominees for Best Limited Series, the odds for each of the entries detailed below is pretty good.
