Stephen Graham
Mother’s Pride | May 2025 release date confirmed
Stephen Graham
Pub- based comedy drama Mother’s Pride will be in cinemas next year, and the cast has now been confirmed.

The British film industry has been releasing a steady stream of comedy dramas over the last few years, full of homegrown talent both in front of and behind the camera.

In 2018, Stephen Graham and comedian Dave Johns led the cast of wrestling comedy Walk Like A Panther, although perhaps the most notable example is the Fisherman’s Friends series, which chronicled the unlikely story of a group of fisherman who form a band and release an album of sea shanties to critical and commercial acclaim.

This led to life imitating art, as the actual band the film was based on saw a huge surge in popularity, with albums climbing up the charts and multiple sell out national tours.

According to the British Comedy Guide, the team behind Fisherman’s Friends is now producing...

Miles Jupp in Balamory (2002)
Balamory | BBC reviving hit children’s show on CBeebies
Miles Jupp in Balamory (2002)
Beloved children’s show Balamory is returning to the BBC after a decade or two off the screen – and here’s the story.

What’s the story in Balamory, wouldn’t you like to know?.

So goes the opening line to one of the catchiest children’s television theme tunes of the early 2000s: Balamory.

The show originally ran from 2002 to 2005. Created by former Playschool presenter Brian Jameson, Balamory followed the inhabitants of the titular fictional Scottish village, led by Julie Wilson Nimmo as nursery teacher Miss Hoolie . Nimmo and her husband, Still Game co-creator Greg Hemphill, recently revisited the Balamory filming location as part of their documentary Jules and Greg’s Wild Swim, which is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.

Miles Jupp also got his break in the show playing zany inventor Archie, he went on to forge a successful career as a stand up comic.

Taskmaster Series 18 Line-Up Revealed (Incl. Alex Horne’s Dream Comedian Jack Dee!)
Image
Where does the time go? It feels like only yesterday that Taskmaster’s series 17 contestants first appeared in the studio, shakily establishing their pecking order, testing out their rudeness vs sucking-up strategy when it came to Lord Greg Davies, and shifting nervously in their seats as they wondered which of their psychological breakdowns had made the edit. Now, they’ve all grown-up and left home, leaving five empty chairs waiting for the next set of bums to warm them.

Those bums, and the comedians attached to them, have now been officially announced. Competing for the head of the Taskmaster in series 18 will be: Andy Zaltzman, Babatunde Aléshé, Emma Sidi, Jack Dee and Rosie Jones.

Here’s a little bit of info about each of them.

Andy Zaltzman

BBC Radio 4 satirist, stand-up and co-host of The Bugle podcast, Andy Zaltzman is a political comedian and cricket obsessive whose interest in...

‘Napoleon’ Review
Image
Stars: Joaquin Phoenix, Vanessa Kirby, Tahar Rahim, Rupert Everett, Mark Bonnar, Paul Rhys, Ben Miles, Riana Duce, Ludivine Sagnier, Edouard Philipponnat, Miles Jupp, Scott Handy, Youssef Kerkour | Written by David Scarpa | Directed by Ridley Scott

“When the legend becomes fact, print the legend” – one of cinema’s most famous quotes from John Ford’s 1962 classic western The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. That quote can be used to describe how Ridley Scott has chosen to approach the story of Napoleon. Scott has chosen to ignore much of the historical accuracy in this historical biopic and that has caused historians to be irate and critics to be torn.

Joaquin Phoenix is Napoleon and throughout the film we get to witness his rise and fall across 32 years, from the beginning of the French Revolution to the eventual death of Napoleon in 1821. The first instance we get to see what Napoleon is all...

The Full Monty Review: Forget Strippers, This TV Sequel Is Warm, Funny and Mad as Hell
Image
1997 film The Full Monty is remembered for two things: being an unexpectedly massive hit, and its final shot of six naked bums frozen mid-sway to Tom Jones’ “You Can Leave Your Hat On”. Over time, its story about a group of unemployed Sheffield men making themselves a bit of cash and even more notoriety by stripping on stage for one night only has been boiled down to box-office and bare bottoms. So much so that when this 26-years-later sequel was first announced, there was a lot of the same reaction: wouldn’t that lot be in their sixties by now? Who’d want to see them in a thong?

You don’t see anybody in a thong in The Full Monty TV series, which doesn’t even call back to that infamous sold-out night at the Millthorpe Working Men’s Club until episode six of eight. For want of a less troubling mental image,...

‘The Full Monty’ Review: FX/Hulu Sequel Is Flawed But Full of Unassuming Charm
Image
Was there anyone, truly, who left The Full Monty wondering what these lads would be up to in three decades’ time?

The 1997 film was a complete work in itself, with few plot threads left dangling and no cinematic universe necessary. Hulu’s new sequel, also titled The Full Monty, doesn’t offer an obvious justification for its own existence either. There’s no inciting incident that brings us back to Sheffield, and no motivating goal once we’re there. The most explicit homage to the movie’s famous dance number plays (amusingly) like maybe the cast joked that they wouldn’t do the routine again if they had a gun to their heads.

Yet in spite of it all, the series works more often than not. The show (created by Simon Beaufoy, who also wrote the film) makes the bet that although the stripper plot might be what most people remember about The Full Monty,...

‘The Full Monty’ Boys Are Back, With Less Stripping But Lots of Charm
Image
In the 1997 sleeper hit comedy The Full Monty, six unemployed men in a dying English steel town attempt to make some cash by putting on a show where they will dance and strip for the local women. In the new FX sequel series, Gaz (Robert Carlyle), Dave (Mark Addy), and the rest of the group are in many ways more desperate. But they’re also too old and slow to reprise their greatest hit. When a stranger pressures them to do the dance again for the first time in 26 years,...

The Full Monty TV Series Trailer: The Whole Gang Is Back, But Are They Still Stripping?
Image
Remember "The Full Monty," friends? The British comedy from director Peter Cattaneo and "Slumdog Millionaire" writer Simon Beaufoy earned critical acclaim across the board for its funny and charming story about six unemployed men, including four former steel workers, who decide to form a male striptease act in order to get through some tough times. The film went on to land Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Original Musical or Comedy Score, even though it only won the latter.

Now, "The Full Monty" will have a chance at winning a whole new slate of awards because it's getting a sequel TV series at FX (on Hulu) with original cast members Robert Carlyle, Mark Addy, Lesley Sharp, Hugo Speer, Paul Barber, Steve Huison, Wim Snape, and Tom Wilkinson all reprising their roles from the movie. It's been 25 years since they bared it all, so...

‘The Full Monty’: First-Look Photos Of FX/Hulu Sequel Series; Robert Carlyle, Lesley Sharp Among Returning Cast
Image
We’re getting a first look at FX’s The Full Monty, the eight-part follow-up to the BAFTA-winning movie. FX has released some of the first images from the series that will premiere in June (date Tba) and stream exclusively in the U.S. on Hulu.

Set 25 years after the film, the eight-episode series will follow the same band of brothers as they navigate the post-industrial city of Sheffield and society’s crumbling healthcare, education, and employment sectors. The comedy-drama will uncover what happened to the gang after they put their kit back on, exploring their brighter, sillier and more desperate moments. It will also highlight how the fiercely funny world of these working-class heroes – still residing in Sheffield – has changed in the intervening decades.

The original movie’s screenwriter Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) returns, along with co-writer Alice Nutter (Accused), and Uberto Pasolini (Nowhere Special) also coming back as executive producer.

Have I Got News For You guest hits back at ‘blinking’ criticism from viewer
Image
Charlotte Ivers, a guest panellist on the latest episode of Have I Got News For You, has responded to criticism of her blinking on Twitter.

On last night’s episode (14 April) of the BBC One comedy current affairs show, Ivers was introduced by host Charlie Brooker as a “Sunday Times journalist and broadcaster who worked as a special adviser to Theresa May in 2019”. He quipped: “That special advice presumably being ‘quit’.”

While the show was airing, one viewer felt compelled to ask Twitter: “Why does Charlotte Ivers keep blinking?”

On Saturday morning (15 April), Ivers quoted the tweet, writing: “I don’t f***ing know Jack are we not meant to be blinking at the moment I can’t keep up with the trends Jesus.”

In a follow-up tweet, she wrote: “(This is mildly unfair I know I do a weird fluttering thing with my eyes but I Dont Know...

Of course the BBC cancelled Frankie Boyle’s New World Order
Image
When it was announced yesterday that Frankie Boyle’s BBC series New World Order had been cancelled, the comedian’s reaction was frank but restrained. “Not surprising in the current climate, I suppose,” he told fans on Twitter, many of whom had followed his superb topical panel show devotedly for the five years it was on the air. Boyle didn’t elaborate on what he meant by the words “current climate”, but it doesn’t take too many imaginative leaps to hazard a guess. New World Order was one of the few shows on TV that was sincerely and unapologetically left-wing. And politically speaking, the BBC is in the midst of a full-fledged climate crisis.

It’s not good for optics that New World Order’s cancellation comes just weeks after the BBC was embroiled in an impartiality row with Match of the Day host Gary Lineker. The dispute – prompted...

Frankie Boyle says he isn’t ‘surprised’ as BBC axes New World Order
Image
Frankie Boyle has reacted to the news that the BBC has cancelled his comedy series New World Order.

The Scottish comedian has hosted the programme for six series, the first season of which arrived in 2017 on BBC Two.

In the satirical show, Boyle dicusses two current affair issues, usually related to politics, alongside guests that have included Sara Pascoe, Miles Jupp and Katherine Ryan.

However, the BBC has decided to end the series, with a spokesperson stating: “We would like to thank Frankie Boyle and all those involved for six great series of New World Order.”

The corporation made it clear that they are not severing ties with Boyle, adding: “We look forward to seeing what he does next on the BBC.”

Boyle responded to the news on social media, telling his followers: “Ah well, there’s to be no more New World Order on the BBC. Not surprising in the current climate,...

We Are Not Alone Review: Ghosts’ Naughtier, More Grown-Up Sibling
Image
If you thought We Are Not Alone was going to be the kind of comforting comedy you get from Ghosts you’ll quickly find out you’re wrong. The opening scene, in which the main character Stewart ends up suddenly covered in his best friend’s innards after he gets crushed by an alien messaging device, is a pretty big clue that this is a departure into a slightly more grown-up territory.

This new feature-length Dave comedy doesn’t waste any time: we’re straight into the action, discovering Earth has been invaded and conquered by the Gu’uns, a blue, large-foreheaded alien race with Very Big Guns. The Gu’uns don’t muck about – their takeover has included blowing up New Zealand, nixing everyone’s mobile phone signal and blasting the Chancellor of England into space (so it’s not all bad news), and in a brief appearance from...

Lucy Boynton, Will Poulter to Star in Agatha Christie’s ‘Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?’
Image
Lucy Boynton (“Bohemian Rhapsody”) and Will Poulter (“The Revenant”) are set to star in Hugh Laurie’s adaptation of “Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?”, one of Agatha Christie’s earliest murder mystery novels.

Laurie (“House”) is set to direct and act in the three-part series for BritBox North America, in which he plays the creepy Dr. James Nicholson, a clinical director of a sanatorium.

Christie published “Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?”, which follows Bobby (Poulter) and shrewd socialite Lady Frances (Boynton) as they untangle a murder mystery, in 1934. In classic Christie fashion, there are plenty of twists and turns until the perpetrator is finally unmasked.

“I’m so thrilled to be working with Hugh and Will, and on this story from one of my favourite authors,” said Boynton. “I can’t wait to get started.” She won’t have to wait long with production kicking off this week.

Claflin, Butterfield, Bettany in Us Trailer for Wwi Film 'Journey's End'
"You must stay where you are for as long as you can." Good Deed Entertainment has released a brand new official Us trailer for the Wwi drama titled Journey's End, from director Saul Dibb, which first premiered at the Toronto and London Film Festivals last year. The film is based on a seminal British play about Wwi, set mostly in a dugout in Aisne, France in 1918. The story is about a group of ragged British officers, led by the mentally disintegrating young officer Stanhope, who are awaiting their fate in this wretched place. The three officers are played by Paul Bettany, Stephen Graham, and Tom Sturridge, and the cast includes Sam Claflin as a Captain, plus Asa Butterfield as a young new officer; as well as Toby Jones, Robert Glenister, Oliver Dimsdale, and Miles Jupp. This looks like a thoroughly harrowing Wwi drama with some intense, gritty war scenes. The Man Who Invented Christmas – Review
Dan Stevens (left) stars as Charles Dickens and Christopher Plummer (right) stars as Ebenezer Scrooge in director Bharat Nalluri’s The Man Who Invented Christmas, a Bleecker Street release. Photo credit: Kerry Brown / Bleecker Street ©

Dan Stevens gives a frenetic performance as Charles Dickens racing to finish writing “A Christmas Carol” in time to publish before the holiday, in The Man Who Invented Christmas. Directed by Bharat Nalluri (Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day), this film has all the Christmas color and Victorian period costumes and sets you could want in a Christmas film. The film is mostly a clever way to retell the famous tale, as characters spring from the author’s imagination while he struggles with his own family issues and races to meet a pre-Christmas release deadline, but it also touches on how his short novel transformed a once-minor holiday into the tradition we know today.

The Man Who Invented Christmas movie review: but would Charles Dickens approve?
MaryAnn’s quick take… There’s charm and wit in its fanciful depiction of the creative process, but the film downplays the social activism that Dickens fully embraced in his work. I’m “biast” (pro): love Dickens and A Christmas Carol

I’m “biast” (con): haven’t been the biggest fan of Dan Stevens

I have not read the source material

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Did Charles Dickens really invent our modern observance of Christmas? Well… he certainly contributed to it, with his beloved 1843 novella A Christmas Carol bringing to it a spirit of family celebration and togetherness and moving the holiday away from its religious grounding to a more secular one focused on ecumenical kindness and generosity. But we also have Prince Albert to thank, for importing his German Yuletide customs — such as evergreens and Christmas trees — to England when he married...

Sam Claflin, Asa Butterfield in UK Trailer for Wwi Film 'Journey's End'
"We won't last five minutes if the Germans attack..." Lionsgate UK has unveiled a new trailer for a Wwi drama titled Journey's End, which just premiered at the Toronto and London Film Festivals this fall. This looks like a solid, emotionally draining, riveting drama that is once again about the brutal horrors of war, specifically the trench warfare of Wwi. I really want to see this,...

ChickLit review – mummy-porn shenanigans fail to arouse
This Britcom about a bunch of locals trying to save their village pub by writing a Fifty Shades of Grey-style bestseller is hammily acted and clunkily scripted

There are one or two moments of amiably daft silliness here, but really this British comedy is ropey: dully and depressingly lit, hammily acted and clunkily scripted (except for one or two lines that I suspect are down to Miles Jupp who provided “additional material”). It is nowhere near TV standards. Yet film-maker Tony Britten has assembled quite a cast, including Eileen Atkins as a Peggy-Ramsay-style literary agent and John Hurt as her boozy, moustachioed colleague.

John Boyega, James McAvoy, Ben Kingsley, and More Lend Voices To Watership Down
I've somehow never even heard of Watership Down, but I understand it had a profound impact on a lot of people when they were growing up. Now the story will be able to find a larger audience and reach a whole new generation, as the BBC and Netflix are teaming for an animated miniseries adaptation of Richard Adams' novel. Variety reports that the show will be available sometime in 2017. The outlet has a good breakdown of the story and an announcement of its impressive cast:

Set in the idyllic rural landscape of southern England, the adventure tale follows a band of rabbits on their flight from the intrusion of man and the certain destruction of their home. Led by a stouthearted pair of brothers, they journey forth from their native Sandleford Warren through the harrowing trials posed by predators and adversaries, toward a promised land and a more perfect society.

Steven Moffat launches impassioned defence of the BBC: 'We can't let Tories switch it off'
Steven Moffat is the latest star to make an impassioned defence of the BBC in the wake of the government's critical Green Paper.

The award-winning Doctor Who and Sherlock showrunner described the corporation as a "beacon of quality" and accused the Conservative government of a desire to "turn off the people that are criticising them", blasting its ideas for reform as "all wretched [and] all wrong".

"If we limit it, or damage it, or destroy it, we have absolutely no idea how to turn [the BBC] back on, because we don't know how it happened it the first place," Moffat told The Stage.

"You could look at [the BBC's] philosophy, you could look at the fact that somehow from the work of those early pioneers it became a beacon of quality - not just for Britain, but for the entire world.

"If we allow, basically, the Tories to turn off the people that are criticising them,...
