“Giant Horde Beast: Nezura” is a monster movie, a precursor to “Gamera”, that was originally slated for release in 1964. It was shot using live rats on miniature sets to make the rodents appear as giant monsters. The production team reportedly drove around the city in a truck, buying rats off the street for 50 yen each. However, the project was shut down by the health department after 3,000 feet of footage had been filmed. The reason: the wild brown rats used in the production were escaping the set and posed a public health risk, with the potential to transmit disease. The remaining rats were reportedly sprayed with oil, burned, and disposed of. After this troubled attempt, the crew disbanded. Still, the studio was not deterred from pursuing the kaiju genre, and soon released “Gamera, the Giant Monster”, reusing sets originally built for “Giant Horde Beast: Nezura”.
