Today, Collider is pairing with Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Madison Gate Records to take fans behind the music. As we quickly approach the March 28 arrival of the Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue Original Score release, the team behind the limited series’ stunning soundtrack gives audiences an all-access pass to learn more about how the original score was created. Looping in the MGM+ series’ Ivor Novello-nominated composer Chris Roe, the musician was kind enough to film a handful of never-before-seen videos that explain where he got the idea for several of the production’s themes.

Before we jump into Roe’s demonstrations, for those who may not know, Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue is the latest series set for release on MGM+. Created and written by novelist and screenwriter Anthony Horowitz (Midsommar Murders), the project follows nine strangers who find themselves trapped in a Mexican jungle after their airplane goes down.

After the mic drop moment in Season 1, Episode 3, “Rapido”, Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue gets medieval. With bodies piled up and suspects thinning out, murder is the only thing on the menu for someone. Either by suffocation, decapitation, or plain poisoning, people are being eliminated. Ammunition is running low, morale is at rock bottom, and trust has evaporated. Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue had to get better. After an opening episode that struggled to hit pay dirt dramatically, another installment of this MGM+ original was not a welcome prospect. For a series that had been hailed as a complex murder mystery filled with countless twists and turns, there was little evidence of that in the premiere. An hour of bone-dry introductions that did little to instill confidence or give this group of talented actors much to work with. However, with two bodies already under a tarp, at least this murder-mystery will be short-lived.

What a difference a day makes; not only is Season 1, Episode 2, “Black Angels” an improvement on that opener, but it feels like a different show. Gone are those awkward moments of dramatic downtime...

Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue is a murder-mystery pure and simple. Created by best-selling author Anthony Horowitz for MGM+, it reverse engineers a crime fiction cliché by having the victims turn detective. Coming on like Lost in a South American rainforest, this opening episode starts by laying down some foundations. It gives nothing away to say that Nine Bodies plays a mean game of poker with the audience during that first hour. Conversations between the Mexican military manning this morgue are rife with unanswered questions. There are no body bags yet, and the idea of autopsies is a pipedream for another episode.

With an ensemble cast including Eric McCormack and David Ajala from Star Trek: Discovery, there is not a lot to work with, even after an hour.

Per Deadline, Sean Bean has joined the cast of the new Robin Hood series at MGM+ that's in the works. He will play the Sheriff of Nottingham.

Book publisher Susan Ryeland (Lesley Manville) returns for one last hurrah in a new series for Masterpiece Theater. PBS revealed that the character will give her final farewell in the adaptation of Marble Hall Murders. This is the third part of the series that started with Magpie Murders, originally released in 2022. The book series stems from the mind of Anthony Horowitz, author of the best-selling mystery books.

Lesley Manville and Tim McMullan will once again reprise their respective roles as book editor Susan Ryeland and fictional detective Atticus Pünd in Marble Hall Murders, Masterpiece PBS’ trilogy-ending follow-up to Magpie Murders (2022) and Moonflower Murders (2024).

Oscar nominee Lesley Manville and Tim McMullan are set to return in “Marble Hall Murders,” the third and final installment of Anthony Horowitz’s Susan Ryeland mystery series, which has been commissioned by Masterpiece on PBS and acquired by the BBC.

The new adaptation follows the success of “Moonflower Murders” and “Magpie Murders,” with Eleventh Hour Films partnering with Salt Films for PBS Masterpiece and the BBC. The series will lens in March across Dublin, Corfu and London locations.

Manville returns as Susan Ryeland, a book editor with an uncanny knack for finding herself embroiled in murder mysteries. The latest case sees her back in England, where she becomes entangled in a new Atticus Pünd mystery penned by an emerging writer. Set in 1955 at a luxurious Corfu villa, “Pünd’s Last Case” harbors more than just fictional intrigue – a real killer’s identity lies hidden within its pages, putting Susan in mortal danger once again.

Exclusive: Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones), Joe Alwyn (The Brutalist), Naledi Murray (Sweet Tooth), Ben Chaplin (September 5) and Sebastian Orozco (The Crow) round out the cast of Sam Esmail’s upcoming film Panic Carefully for Warner Bros.

They join the previously announced leading cast of Julia Roberts, Eddie Redmayne, Elizabeth Olsen, and Brian Tyree Henry.

Details regarding the film’s premise and character descriptions are under wraps. Panic Carefully is described as a paranoid thriller in the vein of Esmail’s Mr. Robot and Silence of the Lambs and involves the hunt for a cyber-terrorist.

Esmail wrote the film and will direct. He and Chad Hamilton will produce for Esmail Corp., along with Scott Stuber, Roberts, Marisa Yeres Gill, and Lisa Gillan. Kevin McCormick and Chrystal Li are overseeing the project for Warner Bros.

Like the first series, it follows Susan Ryeland (Lesley Manville), an editor, solving a real murder mirrored by a mystery in a client’s novel. Pippa Bennett-Warner plays Madeline, a character in the story within a story. “I tried not to think about the play-within-the-plays type thing because what was happening to her was absolutely happening to her,” says Bennett-Warner of playing a fictional character, even within the world of the show. While the real mystery is happening in the present, Bennett-Warner’s character exists in the 1950s. Adapted from Anthony Horowitz’s novels, it stars Lesley Manville as Susan Ryeland, an editor turned amateur sleuth. Just like in the previous installment, Magpie Murders, Moonflower Murders follows Susan as she investigates an actual murder that seems tied to the unsolved crime in a new novel by late author Alan Conway.

This latest case brings Susan back to her former hometown in England after settling in Greece. Sony Pictures Television (Spt) has taken majority control of Eleventh Hour Films, the U.K.-based TV production company it first invested in back in 2018.

The deal, announced Monday, sees Eleventh Hour join Spt’s stable of majority-owned British drama outfits, alongside Left Bank Pictures (The Crown), Bad Wolf (His Dark Materials) and Eleven (Sex Education). Helion Partners advised Eleventh Hour on the transaction. Financial details were not disclosed.

Sony said the capital investment with “supercharge the next phase of growth” for the company, known for such Brit procedurals as Magpie Murders and Foyle’s War and teen spy thriller Alex Rider.

Sony Pictures Television (Spt) has revealed an increased investment in Eleventh Hour Films (Ehf), taking a majority stake in the U.K.-based production company. This move makes Ehf the fourth majority-owned, U.K.-based scripted drama company in Spt’s International Production group, joining Left Bank Pictures, Bad Wolf and Eleven.

The investment follows a period of growth for Ehf, which has secured multiple commissions and recommissions. Spt aims to bolster Ehf’s strategic growth and strengthen collaborative ties.

Ehf, founded in 2010, has produced several popular dramas, including “Magpie Murders” and its upcoming sequel “Moonflower Murders,” both based on novels by Anthony Horowitz, for PBS Masterpiece and the BBC. Sony Pictures Television (Spt) is maintaining its focus on British TV drama with another big acquisition deal.

The studio has upped its minority shareholding in Alex Rider producer Eleventh Hour Films to a majority stake. Sony had first invested in the British indie in 2018.

Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

Eleventh Hour will sit alongside fellow UK drama producers Left Bank, Bad Wolf and Eleven in the Spt stable. Along with the shareholder changes, company founder Jill Green will move from her CEO role to become a creative executive producer. She will remain chair, and Eve Gutierrez and Paula Cuddy will become co-CEOs.

According to documents on Companies House, before today’s transaction Spt controlled 22.7% of the shares, with Green owning 43.2%, Gutierrez 14.4%, Cuddy 5.3% and Eleventh Hour Films as an entity the remaining 14.3%. Moonflower Murders, the Masterpiece follow up to Magpie Murders, has a release date: The second series chronicling a mystery solved by Susan Ryeland (Lesley Manville) and the fictional Atticus Pünd (Tim McMullan) will premiere September 15 on PBS.

Masterpiece also dropped the first trailer for the series. The action, which is based on Anthony Horowitz’s best-selling novel of the same name, takes place after the events of Magpie Murders, the hit series shown on PBS in 2022. More than 5.5 million viewers watched Magpie Murders and the series has been streamed over 3.1 million times.

In addition to Manville and McMullan, the cast of Moonflower Murders includes Conleth Hill, Mark Gatiss, Pippa Bennett-Warner and Daniel Mays.

Anthony Horowitz is perhaps best known for creating the Alex Rider franchise, which so far comprises fourteen novels, seven short stories, a critically maligned 2006 film and a popular television drama on Amazon Prime, the third and final series of which aired last month. He has also written many standalone novels and the terrific Horowitz Horror books of horror stories for older children.

However, he is just as prolific writing for the screen, creating the brilliant time travel drama Crime Traveller, which starred Michael French and Red Dwarf star Chloe Annett, ITV drama Foyle’s War and the television adaptation of his novel Magpie Murders.
