- Helen Virginia Horton was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Frances Katherine (Stewart) and Walter Clark "Bud" Horton. She was married to James Hamish Thomson, of Inverkeithing, Fife, Scotland. Their granddaughter is actress Lily James. On her father's side, Helen had Colonial American roots in New England. On her mother's side, she had Scottish ancestry, by way of Canada.
