7 ‘Die Hard’ Clones – And Why They Didn’t Work?
Image
“Die Hard” is a quintessential action film that redefined the genre across the late ‘80s, ‘90s, and beyond. So, it’s no surprise that every few years, studios try to recapture that 1988 lightning in a bottle—by straight-up ripping it off. Its success is owed to many things: tight writing, smart direction/cinematography, a stacked cast, and a messy but sincere charm. But admirers and imitators alike believe the secret lies in the formula. And what a formula it is. Start with an everyman, maybe a cop, but never a supercop. Drop them into an unwinnable situation against their will.

Give them personal stakes. Let them take out a parade of colorful henchmen one by one before reaching the final boss. Tag on a happy ending, and you’ve got an instant classic. Storytelling buffs might call this The Hero’s Journey. But if you add varied European terrorists, a breathtaking yet contained setting,...

Image
The hit series 9-1-1: Lone Star recently came to an end, but the franchise will be moving forward with another spinoff series to fill the empty void that's created. This time, the show will be focusing on emergency responders working in Tennessee.

Per Deadline, it's been revealed that a new show, 9-1-1: Nashville, is coming to ABC for the 2025-26 season. It was previously reported that a new 9-1-1 offshoot was in development, though details weren't confirmed about its location. Currently, no information is known about the plot of the new series beyond its setting in Nashville, and no cast members have been announced. It can be presumed that a team of first responders will be at the heart of the story.

Ryan Murphy's '9-1-1' and 'Doctor Odyssey' to Air Crossover Episode
Image
Say what you want about Ryan Murphy, but he always seems to be thinking about the best way to make his television empire thrive. Before today, there was no indication that his popular procedural series 9-1-1 and his newest endeavor, Doctor Odyssey, shared a universe, but that's all set to change as the worlds of his two ABC series are about to collide.

Per Variety, 9-1-1 and Doctor Odyssey will cross over in a special episode of the latter that will see Angela Bassett's character, Athena Grant from 9-1-1, head over to the cruise ship on Doctor Odyssey led by Joshua Jackson's Dr. Max Bankman. Doctor Odyssey focuses on a different themed cruise in each episode, and this particular crossover event will take place during Casino Week on the ship, which will see Bassett's Athena suspecting two passengers of trying to Ocean's 11 the ship's vault.

‘Prison Break’ Reboot Lands Hulu Pilot Order
Image
The “Prison Break” reboot in development is one step closer to freedom, landing a pilot order from Hulu.

The new iteration of the series, from “Mayans M.C.” co-creator and showrunner Elgin James and 20th Television, is not expected to feature the characters at the center of the original jailhouse drama, Michael Scofield (played by Wentworth Miller) and Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell). Rather, it will exist in the same universe as the original “Prison Break” but focus on a new crew of inmates.

James executive produces alongside Dawn Olmstead, “Prison Break” creator Paul Scheuring, Marty Adelstein and Neal Moritz. In addition to the “Sons of Anarchy” spinoff “Mayans,” James also co-created with Stephen Merchant the Amazon Studios/BBC One series “The Outlaws,” starring Christopher Walken.

“Prison Break” ran for five seasons on Fox and spawned a TV movie, “The Final Break,” and a low-budget spinoff, “Prison Break: Proof of Innocence,” which...

Wtf Happened to Passenger 57?
Image
You have three seconds to name Wesley Snipes’ best ‘90s action movie: Go! As the numbers tally, only six options remain: New Jack City, Passenger 57, Boiling Point, Rising Sun, Demolition Man, and Blade. If we’re talking crime-action, New Jack City reigns supreme. Horror-Action? Blade all damn day. Sci-Fi Action? Demolition Man is too silly to miss. But if we’re simply counting hyper-violent, hard-boiled action fare – it’s hard to elevate above Passenger 57 – a lean, mean, bullet-laced blitzkrieg of thrilling throwback action made in the wake of Die Hard. In the film, Snipes portrays John Cutter, a badass airport security expert who finds himself in a hijacked airliner overrun by Charles “The Rane of Terror” Rane and his undercover henchmen.

Despite overtly adopting the Die Hard formula of isolating a grumpy, charismatic hero in a single location and pitting them against a troupe of gun-toting terrorists, Passenger 57...

Image
Alan Sacks, known for co-creating Welcome Back, Kotter and producing several Disney Channel projects, has died. He was 81.

The producer’s wife, talent agent Annette van Duren, tells Deadline that Sacks died Tuesday morning in New York City after his mantle cell lymphoma took an “aggressive” turn in recent weeks.

“It was treated for him to dance at our daughter’s June wedding and walk her down the aisle,” she said. “After that, the chemotherapy stopped being effective. He started hospice last week. He died peacefully listening to Tibetan music for the final few days and nights at age 81.”

Actor Robert Rusler, who starred alongside Josh Brolin in the 1986 Sacks-written skateboarding romance Thrashin’, remembered the “writer, producer, teacher and connector of people” in a statement on Instagram.

Listing some of his standout credits, Rusler noted, “Where I got to know him from was working with him on the movie #Thrashin.

Robert M. Young, the adventurous director who called the shots for Edward James Olmos in The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez, Farrah Fawcett in Extremities and Tom Hulce and Ray Liotta in Dominick and Eugene, died Feb. 6, his son Andrew announced. He was 99.

After getting his start in educational and documentary films, Young also directed the 1969 Peabody-winning CBS telefilm J.T., written by Jane Wagner. Revolving around a Harlem youngster (Kevin Hooks) and an alley cat, it bowed on a Saturday afternoon and was repeated in primetime as the network preempted its most popular show, Gunsmoke.

New ‘Prison Break’ Series Coming to Hulu in 2024
Image
Breaking: A new ‘Prison Break’ series is in the works at Hulu, set in the same universe as the original, but without the original characters.

Hulu has announced that it is developing a new series based on the popular Fox drama Prison Break, which ran for five seasons from 2005 to 2017. The new series will be set in the same world as the original, but will feature a new cast of characters and a new storyline.

The original Prison Break followed the exploits of Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller), a structural engineer who deliberately got himself incarcerated in a maximum-security prison to help his brother Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) escape death row. Along the way, they uncovered a vast conspiracy involving a shadowy organization known as The Company. The series was praised for its thrilling plot twists, action sequences, and ensemble cast.

The new series will be executive produced by Paul Scheuring,...

Passenger 57 Legacy Sequel with Wesley Snipes Rumored to Be on the Way
Image
Buckle up, because it's rampant speculation time. Following the recent release of several projects on the agenda of the California Film Commission, one title in particular instantly stood out to action movie fans and could suggest that we are getting a sequel to the 1992 Wesley Snipes thriller, Passenger 57. Listed as Passenger 58, it's well worth noting that no one official has said anything to suggest that a sequel is in the works, but really, what else could it be? Well, anything, but don't ruin the fun.

Adding weight to the idea is the fact that Warner Specialty Productions Inc. is listed as the company name for the mysterious Passenger 58, and it was Warner Bros. who distributed Passenger 57 back in the 1990s. Directed by Kevin Hooks, 1992's Passenger 57 stars Wesley Snipes and Bruce Payne, with Snipes portraying John Cutter, a former cop turned airline security expert who is haunted...

‘The Good Lord Bird’: Ethan Hawke is ‘incandescent’ in Showtime’s ‘boldly entertaining’ limited series
Image
“The Good Lord Bird” premiered on Showtime on October 4 and is poised to be a serious contender at this winter’s awards, including the Golden Globes, as well as next year’s Emmys. The limited series showcases Ethan Hawke both in front of and behind the camera. He helped adapt James McBride‘s 2013 novel of the same name and portrays John Brown, a “wild-eyed” abolitionist leading a misfit brigade of soldiers that fail to initiate a slave revolt, but ultimately instigate the American Civil War.

As of this writing the series, which Hawkes also produced, has a MetaCritic score of 83 based on 13 reviews, all of them positive. On Rotten Tomatoes, the seven-episode series is off to an impressive start with a 100% freshness rating.

“The Good Lord Bird” is told from the point of view of Onion (Joshua Caleb Johnson), a fictionalized character who tags along with Brown’s army after...

‘The Good Lord Bird’: Ethan Hawke Is Antislavery’s Crazed Crusader
Image
“It’s alright to stretch the word of the Lord sometimes,” admits God-fearing, fire-breathing abolitionist John Brown (Ethan Hawke) in The Good Lord Bird. It’s an approach the darkly comic miniseries takes towards matters historical as well as religious, as each episode opens with the disclaimer: “All of this is true. Most of it happened.”

Brown did, in fact, lead a series of violent raids across “Bleeding Kansas” in the 1850s, and later orchestrated a doomed raid on the federal armory in Harpers Ferry, Virginia, with which he hoped...

Sterling K. Brown Breaks Down Randall’s Anxiety, Aversion to Therapy in ‘This Is Us’
Sterling K. Brown, Chrissy Metz, and Faithe Herman in This Is Us (2016)
Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “A Hell of a Week: Part One,” the 11th episode of the fourth season of “This Is Us.”

It was a moment that made actor Sterling K. Brown scream out-loud when he read it in the script: his “This Is Us” character, Randall Pearson, arrived home from a trip to deal with his aging mother’s (Mandy Moore) health, checked on his sleeping wife and daughters, and headed back down to the kitchen, only to catch someone breaking into his house in the act.

That cliffhanger from the midseason premiere episode, entitled “Light and Shadows,” paid off in the first-part of the fourth season’s Big Three trilogy episodes, “A Hell of a Week: Part One.”

Randall, who was already stressed out about his mother’s unclear diagnosis, took a few solid, deep breaths to steady himself and then...

TV Review: ‘The Red Line’
For all that broadcast TV’s power has attenuated in recent years, what they choose to put on still means something — and, from a certain point of view, something more than the choices made by prestige outlets. After all, the reach of broadcasters is without parallel. They’re simply in that many more homes than prestige cablers and streamers, even as their peak audience (or even their audience five years ago) seems unattainable now.

Which makes it important and worth noting when a network makes a choice more ambitious than the mix of family comedies and procedurals that still performs well enough. Not every element of CBS’s new drama “The Red Line,” about the aftermath of a police shooting in Chicago, works perfectly, but the show is trying to do something unusual in today’s landscape — use the big, broad emotional strokes of broadcast at its best to usher...

"The X-Files," Season 11, Episode 3 Recap: Back To Our Bread And Butter
X-Files Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering Chris Carter's 10-episode continuation of the X-Files television series. To know someone intimately is to risk familiarity, and we all know what that breeds. Not that FBI Special Agents and ex-flames Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) are contemptuous of each other, exactly. Their disdain is more often directed inward, at those subconscious voices that dissuade and derail, reminding them that the clock (on both their work and on life itself) is always ticking. The duo's flirty, jargon-heavy banter is, beyond its innumerable surface pleasures (could any other pair so bewitchingly debate Gastaut-Geschwind syndrome?), a defense mechanism against the devils within and without. Find that one person who you can most easily converse with, whose sentences you don’t just finish but practically prophesy, and nothing can hold you back. That’s how it should ideally work,...

The X-Files Season 11 Review: Series Benefits from Age and Experience
We're less than two weeks from the return of The X-Files Event Series - Second Chapter, the official term given to The X-Files Season 11 by Fox.

Critics received the first five episodes the second chapter, and herein I'll share thoughts on what we've seen so far.

Going by the numbers only, it seems likely the first half of the season will be better than the second, but even then, it should hold up well in comparison to the First Chapter of the Event Series. Here's why.

When speaking with Chris Carter at New York Comic Con, he noted that within the ten episodes we would be receiving three mythology episodes instead of the two. Bookends and one hybrid monster-of-the-week/mythology in the middle.

The problem with that from what I've seen so far is My Struggle III, the premiere of The X-Files Season 11, is by far the most ill-conceived of the five offered for review.

‘Madiba’ Review: Bet’s Nelson Mandela Miniseries Is Powerful & Insightful
Just more than three years after his death, Nelson Mandela may still be too dominant, too regal and too multi-faceted a figure of history for any one book, film or television miniseries to grasp. Debuting tomorrow and running February 8 and February 15, the Kevin Hooks-directed Madiba, shot in South Africa, has its flaws. But, as I say in my video review…...

25 great action films that are 90 minutes or under
facebook

twitter

google+

Want a quality action film, but you only have an hour and a half? Step this way...

Looking back over the genre, action films definitely haven’t suffered from the trend to make everything longer. They’ve always been pretty long, regularly clocking in at over two hours. Perhaps because of all the slo-mo? But while the sweet spot for action classics seems to be the 100-110 minute mark, there are those that have cut the genre right down to basics, and succeeded all the more for it.

Below is my pick of 25 great action films 90 minutes or under. Even more so than other genres, action crosses many other films - picking a pure ‘action’ flick is all but impossible. So below I’ve chosen films that retain action sequences as their main narrative device, and keep the action at the heart of the movie, rather than as a extra.

Agents of Shield, Ep. 2.16, “Afterlife”: The Dead Live Again
Agents of Shield, Season 2, Episode 16: “Afterlife”

Written by Craig Titley

Directed by Kevin Hooks

Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on ABC

After Bobbi and Gonzalez’s big hero moment and Skye’s escape in “One Door Closes”, “Afterlife” is set up to be a bit of a let-down, or at least a slowdown by comparison. There are plenty of good hero moments, like the return of Deathlok, and Fitz-Simmons pulling the wool over Bobbi’s eyes. Even with these moments, the episode’s focus on Skye slows everything down to introduce Afterlife and fit in lots of exposition from Lincoln, played by guest star Luke Mitchell (The Tomorrow People).

It is difficult to gauge Mitchell’s performance as Lincoln based only on “Afterlife”, because as Skye’s guide in this world, most of his dialogue is exposition. The large majority of his scenes with Skye are just Skye walking...

Directed by Kevin Hooks

Written by Denise Thé and Melissa Scrivner-Love

Airs Tuesdays at 10pm Et on CBS

For most people, high school was a terrible, excruciating process. Revisiting it holds less appeal than a root canal, broken collar bone, or both. For the most part, it’s a traumatic experience that, for the lucky few, is shaken off sometime during college. Most people are cursed by their memories for years; who in their right mind would ever want to relive that unpleasant part of their lives? High school is one of the many things in life that is much better off left in the special ditch in your memories. Wait, there are what: high school reunions? Of course, what better way to recapture the terrible moments of high school than with the very people who make it a grueling experience?...

Agents of Shield, Ep. 1.11, “The Magical Place”: Beating a Dead Coulson
Agents of Shield, Season 1, Episode 11, “The Magical Place”

Written by Paul Zbyszewski and Brent Fletcher

Directed by Kevin Hooks

In an early scene of “The Magical Place”, Fitz yells out to Simmons, his better half/Wonder Twin, “It’s time, Simmons. Embrace the change.” It is a strange bit of dialogue that feels more like a message to the audience of Agents of Shield than a line meant to move the plot along. For a show that is still in its first season, Agents of Shield has been oddly stagnant. There are only two episodes left in the show’s initial 13-episode order, and the mystery of what happened to Agent Coulson has still not been solved. Fitz is signaling to the audience that change is coming and to brace themselves for revelations, but the question is whether those revelations are too little and too late.

“The Magical Place” is...

Looking Back On 'J.T.' And The Other Holiday Films Of Yesteryear
In the past decade or so, Hollywood has chucked out a few so-called holiday films, like Last Holiday and This Christmas. And while those films may satisfy the holiday film appetite of some, I'm still a sucker for that old-school; those holiday films from a more simple time-- you know . . . the 70's, 80's, and 90's. You're probably saying, "That wasn't that long ago." But trust me when I tell you that they don't make them like they used to. Take the 1969 TV movie J.T. for example . . . The Robert M. Young-directed J.T. originally aired on CBS, and starred Ja’net Dubois, Helen Martin, and a young Kevin Hooks in the lead role as J.T. Gamble, "a shy, withdrawn...

The Good Wife, Ep. 5.09, “Whack-a-Mole” has a strong center, problematic fringe
The Good Wife, Season 5, Episode 9, “Whack-a-Mole”

Written by Nichelle Tramble Spellman

Directed by Kevin Hooks

Airs Sundays at 9pm Est on CBS

Ah, The Good Wife. You’re always good for a thinly veiled riff on a relevant piece of internet culture, aren’t you? “Whack-a-Mole” focuses on Scabbit, a website that is distinctly not Reddit (just kidding. It totally is.) which the FBI uses to crowd source an investigation of a terrorist attack, leading them to suspect Alicia’s kindly professor, who is writing a book on jihad, but not that kind of jihad.

The show’s interest in social media and internet culture occasionally leads to it being silly and obtuse in a vain attempt to be hip and relevant, but it returns to these issues again and again for a reason. Say what you will about it, but The Good Wife is incredibly skilled at keeping tabs...

Supernatural, Season 9, Episode 3: “I’m No Angel” focuses on the grace-less Castiel
Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Stefano Giulianetti

Supernatural, Season 9, Episode 3: “I’m No Angel”

Written by Brad Buckner and Eugenie Ross-Leming

Directed by Kevin Hooks

Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on The CW

Among the falling of angels that ended Season 8, the incident of Castiel losing his grace and becoming human seemed like a minor point. Regardless of its perceived scale, however, it was nonetheless a huge upheaval for the angel, who once again paid a heavy price for trusting the wrong individual. Compounding the difficulty of adjusting to his human state, Castiel was also forced into becoming a fugitive by angels looking for vengeance. This week’s episode picks up on his struggles, as well as how angels are finding their bearings on Earth, in another solid episode that proves things are only about to get more difficult for the Winchesters and Castiel.

Watching how angels are adjusting to...

Castiel is still the on the fallen angels’ most wanted list. He has taken the name Clarence (because that is what Meg used to call him) and is getting by in various shelters and homeless communities. He spends a few days at each, then moves on. Always moving on. When he discovers a couple priests brutally murdered at the Catholic shelter he is staying at, he realizes the angels are hot on his trail, and moves along quickly. At his next stop, an encampment under a bridge, an angel disguised as a pharmacist finds Castiel there, sleeping in a burned-out bus, alone. He attacks, badly cutting Castiel’s arm.
